Editorial

1987 was a Good Year R. Morgan Pigg, Jr.

n retrospect, 1987 was a good year for our Associa- I tion and for the Journal of School Health. We com- pleted the second full year of publishing material with the Journal format introduced in January 1986. The quality and variety of material published remained strong, and other features such as resources, literature abstracts, and professional profiles augmented the main features. With this issue, we incorporate some layout and graphics changes to update and enhance the Journal’s appearance.

INDEX UPDATE My August 1987 editorial reported on progress to-

ward compiling the first comprehensive index to material published in the Journal since 1930. If you attended the 1987 ASHA national meeting at Indianapo- lis, perhaps you had the opportunity to examine a draft copy of the Index on display at the convention. The editorial staff considered expediting the project to have copies of a subject index available for purchase at Indianapolis. However, after consulting informally with a number of readers, researchers, and ASHA members, we decided to extend the project until an author index can be compiled and incorporated into the publication. We regret the delay, but the final product will be an even more useful resource. The author-subject index should be available by mid-1988.

PEER REVIEW PANEL In this issue, I again have the pleasure to recognize

members of the peer review panel whose names are listed on the facing pages. I cannot praise sufficiently the work of these colleagues. Without our panelists we could not have a professional journal, at least not one with any credibility. We salute these colleagues for their professional contribution to our Journal.

R. Morgan Pigg, Jr., HSD, MPH, FASHA, Editor, Journal of School Health, P. 0. Box 708, Kent, OH 44240.

FUTURE PLANS The editorial staff continues to consider future

improvements for your Journal. Though the comprehensive index has not been published, we already are considering options to provide regular, systematic supplements to the Journal index to ensure the project provides a continuing resource for readers. Also, our long-term goal to increase the publication schedule from 10 to 12 issues annually came a step closer to reality at Indianapolis with approval for the addition in 1988 of a new part-time staff member in the editorial department at the National Office in Kent, Ohio. With increased staff, perhaps the goal of adding two more issues can be accomplished within the next three years.

CONCLUSION Any success this Journal achieves results directly

from the efforts of our editorial staff. Take a moment to read their names included on the page after the Table of Contents page. Our outstanding editorial department at Kent, with support from four talented Assistant Editors and a dedicated peer review panel, work dili- gently to bring you a quality Journal. Likewise, the editorial assistants provide an indispensable service by completing so many of the tasks essential to publishing the Journal. Also, we appreciate Rick Gabler of Anthony J . Jannetti, Inc., for his fine work as our advertising representative.

As another year begins, let us take pride in the pro- gress being made in child health promotion, and rededi- cate ourselves to helping in any way we can. That’s why we go to work each day. Have a good year.
