Anniversary Supreme Chapter "incredible"The largest ever attended conven-tion of Pi Kappa Phi, with moreoutstanding events, greater partici-pftian by wives of alumni, largeralumni attendance and the adjectivescould go on and on. For the 37thSupreme Chapter, your fraternity's75th Anniversary Convention, was
in every way an incredible momentin its already good history.
With excellent photography provid-ed by Tim Ribar, Roanoke, assistedby Bill Creighton, Charleston, theevents and people were bettercovered than for any previous
meeting of Pi Kappa Phi. Thesepictures will be the base source ofcoverage. They should providemore than adequate informationfor those not attending, and alsorefreshments of memories for thosewho did participate in person.
Thosewere reallythe days! The emotional highlight of the 75thAnniversary Supreme Chapter wasthe memorial activities of Tuesdayevening, August 21. Only Pi Kappscould fully grasp the significance ofthe events as they unfolded bothbefore and around them.
Alumni of Pi Kappa Phi fromCharleston set the stage with astirring rendition of the firstmeeting of Pi Kappa Phi onDecember 10, 1904 at the GardenTheater. Those involved were, fromleft to right, John Hassell, CharlieBarrett, David Guerry, GlennMcConnell, Noel Fuller, BobbySheppard, and Randy Rhea.
Then a reminder and charge wasgiven to all by Brother Noel Fullerappearing as Founder Harry Mixsonas he addressed the student leadersof Pi Kappa Phi at the second PiKapp College in 1961.
LEADERSHIP IN HANDS OFNEW NATIONAL COUNCIL
Of immediate importance for thewhole fraternity will be the alumnielected as officers for the next twoyears. Especially will these mem-bers of the National Council be cri-tical when viewed in perspective oftheir comparative inexperience.Four of the six elected have notpreviously served as NationalOfficers.
LONNIE STRICKLAND, ALA-BAMA, NATIONAL PRESIDENT,is a most popular professor of man-agement at the University of Ala-bama. He has served the Fraternityas Treasurer and Vice-President. Dr.Strickland is a sought after speakerand facilitator of meetings by or-ganizations in both the private andpublic sectors. He and his wife,

An outstanding cast of student members of Alpha Chapter placed theevening in perspective with a re-enactment of the original Ritual of Initia-tion. No pictures and no written description are available for those notthere; however, it was conducted with expertise beyond expectation. Thehonor initiate for the event was Brother Maury Covington, and he wasassigned to Beta Chapter. Maury's father, Ben Covington, and brothers,Ben, III, and Terry are all Pi Kapps.
The large contingent of Pi Kapps left the Garden Theater and movedthrough the streets of Charleston to the College where they passedthrough the Memorial Gateway, a gift of the 25th Anniversary Con-vention in 1929. Inside a presentation was made to the college of a RoseGarden containing 75 plants in recognition of the event.
Then on to the place of our founding, 90 Broad Street, Charleston,SC. Alumni, students and guests joined together for the 12 block walk, awalk taken by our Founders themselves as they, students at the College ofCharleston, created the organization we were now celebrating. Quitenaturally the minds of those participating turned to that day 75 years agoand were all thankful.

Grievous error committedThrough insufficient proofreading by the Editor, there was an error ofenormous proportions in the summer issue of the STAR AND LAMP.
The list of alumni being honored for 50 years of membership, GoldenLegion, was prepared. It was inadvertently switched with a list of deceasedmembers. Therefore, these very loyal 50 year members appeared underthe heading of deceased members, and vice versa.
Apology is here extended to all concerned and a corrected list of theGolden Legion recipients appears below. Please review this new list andacknowledge their correct position in the Fraternity.

Your foundationreaches milestone
Pi Kappa Phi Foundation trustees held their biannual meeting while attending the AnniversaryConvention in Charleston.
While changing the name from the"Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Founda-tion" to "Pi Kappa Phi Foundation",the Trustees of the Foundation, attheir biannual August meeting inCharleston, South Carolina, tookthree significant strides to expandthe effectiveness and emphasis ofthe tax-exempt Foundation.
Of major importance was thedecision to include Project P.U.S.H.,the Fraternity's national philan-thropic program, as one of thefund raising goals of the Founda-tion.
Secondly, the concept was initiatedfor the Foundation to acceptcontributions for housing develop-ment, thus furthering the abilityof alumni to assist their individualchapters and Pi Kappa Phi Proper-
ties, Inc. in providing suitablechapter housing.
Thirdly, the Foundation will nowaccept contributions for otherdesignated purposes, such as chapterscholarship funds.
The Foundation remains able toprovide financial assistance to wor-thy students, and will continueits support of the various leader-ship development programs of-fered by Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.
This newly expanded ability willprovide alumni a tax-deductiblestatus for their contributions inthe above categories. Why notpursue the thought of a tax-deductible gift, whether of capitalor lesser nature, to the Foundationto support the program you prefer?
A SAFE INVESTMENTWITH A GOOD DIVIDEND
Have you ever invested in a youngman's college education? It is aninvestment in which you can takepride. Here is your opportunity.
The Pi Kappa Phi Foundation isdedicated to providing financialassistance and encouragement toyoung men who desire an educationbut are without sufficient funds.
The Foundation is a tax exemptorganization operated by a volun-teer Board of Trustees who aremembers of your Fraternity. Theyoung men who will be leaders inour nation in the future are on thecampuses of our colleges right now;some of them need our assistanceand support.
An investment in a young man'scollege education will help to
prepare him better, both for goodcitizenship and for tomorrow'sresponsibilities.
The inclusion of the followingclause in your will (or your designa-tion of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundationin your life insurance policy as abeneficiary) will insure that youwill be a part of some young man'sfuture:"I give, devise, and bequeath to thePi Kappa Phi Foundation the sumof Dollars." (or other-wise describe the gift if it consistsof real estate, securities, or personalproperty.)
DO IT TODAYFor additional information regard-ing the Foundation, write the PiKappa Phi Foundation, P.O. Box240526, Charlotte, NC 28224.

These Alumni are recognizedfor their fraternity activityPrior to each Supreme Chapter, theNational Council nominates out-standing alumni members of PiKappa Phi for a very special award. This award is presented to onlynine members every two years. They are men of distinction. Menwho have served Pi Kappa Phi inevery sense of the word. The awardis the Merit Citation of Pi KappaPhi.
At the 37th Supreme Chapter inCharleston, the following men werenominated by the National Councilto receive a Merit Citation Award. The Supreme Chapter overwhelm-ingly passed a motion recognizingthese select few. They are:

A 75th Anniversary cake, cut by the daughter of Founder Fogarty, Elizabeth Fogarty, is in itself a
significant event. Especially if the cake is large enough for over 700 attending to enjoy a slice.
However, it becomes a super event if the first slice is served by Miss Fogarty to the son of Founder
Kroeg, Alex Kroeg, III. What a great moment in Pi Kappa Phi.
At each Supreme Chapter, the Area Governors attending meet as an advisory group. This is the
Area Governors' Council and here are some of the 16 Area Governors who were in attendance. Thisgroup was chaired by Bill Finney, Georgia Southwestern, in Charleston; however, he has been
replaced by Steve DePalma, Newark, who will be Chairman of the Area Governors until August
1981.
The many student experiences at the Charleston convention includedan excellent opportunity for leadership training. The curriculum wasdeliberately established to cover three highly significant subjects. Thestudents received outstanding instruction in recruiting or rush, fromformer Director of Membership, Henry Groves, Memphis State.
The logical next step in the process of membership development is theeducation of the prospective initiate. Pat Farley, West Virginia, did aninteresting session on this subject using as the base various options tohazing.
Initiation is the final act of membership and in Pi Kappa Phi the Ritualof Initiation is the vehicle for that important event. Dr. Ed King, Dean ofMen at Bradley, and a member of Sigma Chi did his usual outstanding jobof presenting his "A Sigma Chi Looks at the Pi Kappa Phi Ritual" for theedification of members and guests present.
This brief exploration of leadership is a sample of what student leadersmight expect of Pi Kapp College in August at Roanoke College.
The National Advertising AgencyNetwork has awarded Pi KappaPhi Fraternity and Project P.U.S.H.its second place award for publicservice advertising. This was con-sidered among the best workssubmitted by agency membersthroughout the United States.
The award was presented at the fallconference of the National Adver-tising Agency Network in Aspen,Colorado. The nationwide awardwas presented by the NationalAdvertising Agency Network at
its 40th Annual Awards Show.
The Silver Star Award will be dis-played permanently in the Adminis-trative Office of Pi Kappa Phi.
The poster was designed by JimMountjoy of McConnell and Asso-ciates Advertising Agency in Char-lotte, North Carolina. Bill Loeffler, senior partner of the advertisingfirm and a member of Rho Chapterat Washington and Lee University, accepted the award for Pi KappaPhi.

Three very special awards presented inCharleston for service to the total communityAREA GOVERNOR OF THE YEAR
An Area Governor must be self-motivated to an amazing degree. He isresponsible to the National Council for the chapters, alumni and expansionin the geographic area he is assigned. A good one is hard to find but SteveDePalma, Newark, is an exception. He has served as Area Governor,Area I, New York and New Jersey, for three years. He is an excellentArea Governor and has been so designated by the National Council asPi Kappa Phi's Area Governor of the Year for 1979.
Steve DePalma was honored with his Area Governor plaque by his wife, Vickie.
CHAPTER ADVISOR OF THE YEAR
Perhaps the single most important person for a successful chapter is theChapter Advisor. He is the continuity so much needed when one con-siders the transitory nature of the student population. To recognizethis necessary person one is named Chapter Advisor of the Year. Theoutstanding advisor in all of Pi Kappa Phi for this year is Dr. WarrenRobb, Louisville. Dr. Robb is currently the advisor of Delta Psi Chapterat University of Texas - Arlington where he is on the faculty.
—
Here Dr. Warren Robb receives the plaque acknowledging his being selected as Chapter Advisorof the Year from his wife, Dee.
TOP CHAPTERS IN ALL PI KAPPA PHI
The Master Chapter recognition award identifies the accomplishmentsof student chapters in areas of scholarship, financial control, alumnirelations, management, and membership size. The maximum numericalscore that can be achieved is 400.
Any chapter obtaining a perfect score of 400 is designated as a Champion Master Chapter. The year 1978-1979 only two chapters were able to meetthe demanding requirements. They were Gamma, University of California, and Sigma, University of South Carolina.
Master Chapters were: Georgia Tech, NE Missouri State, Alabama, NorthCarolina, Florida, Samford, Western Kentucky, James Madison, Missouri,UNC-Charlotte, Auburn, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Georgia,Iowa State Valdosta State, Wright State, Oklahoma, Livingston and NCState.
STUDENT OF THE YEAR
Each year the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation recognizes the Student of theYear with a financial grant. The person selected is outstanding in manyareas, not just fraternity. The 1979 award was presented in Charlestonto Mark Timmes, Florida. Among his other activities, Mark has beenArchon of Alpha Epsilon Chapter.
He has also been president of Phi Eta Sigma and Sigma Tau Sigma; co-ordinator of the University College Bowl; Who's Who; Omicron DeltaKappa; Mortar Board; Blue Key; President of the University of FloridaI.F.C.; and has maintained a 3.6 G.P.A.
Sr/itMark Timmes (I.), the 1979 Student of the Year, with Dr. Strickland, at that time Vice-President,after just receiving his award from Richard Anderson (r.), Chairman of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation.
FOR ALUMNI RELATIONS
The President's Plaque is appropriately named, for the Pi Kappa Phi Na-tional President does represent the pinnacle of alumni participation. Thisrecognition award acknowledges a chapter for its overall effort to main-tain a proper relationship between the student chapter and its alumni. For 1979 the National Council has presented the award to Alpha ThetaChapter, Michigan State.
Tom Sayre (1.), as designer of the Pi Kappa Phi Project, P.U.S.H., hasa special interest in the Service Award being presented here to LeePeregoff of Xi Chapter. The Roanoke College Chapter was presenteda check and a plaque by the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation for its commit-ment to serving others. Many chapters participated in hundreds of pro-jects and Xi Chapter was selected as the most representative for 1979.
FOR CHAPTER IMPROVEMENT
Only one can be number one, but all can improve. Those chapters thatimprove also need recognition. The Houser Award, named after TheronHouser, former National President, is presented to that chapter whichfrom one year to another exhibits the greatest improvement in overallchapter activity. The 1979 recipient is Delta Delta Chapter of North-east Missouri.
With the giant Pi Kappa Phi flag as a background, the 1979 Rose of Pi Kappa Phi receives the
recognition of over 700 attending the opening banquet of the 37th Supreme Chapter. This lovely
lady is Miss Maria Linda George, nominated by Delta Phi Chapter of Radford College. The flag was
obtained for the fraternity by Gamma Delta Chapter at Memphis State.

First Founders'Race was a hot one
Bo Proctor, UNC-C, is the first winner of the first Pi Kappa Phi 10,000 Meter Race. Bo is in the U.
S. Marine Corps and was attending his first Supreme Chapter.
Twenty-eight Pi Kapps were up early in Charleston for the Founders' 10,000 Meter Race. This
hot August morning, following a night of convention activities, offered a real challenge to those
participating. Here instructions are being given by the starters.
Students were not the only entrants in the Founders' Race. Here are (I.) Bill Loeffler, Washingtonand Lee, a Field Secretary for Pi Kappa Phi in the early '60's and now an advertising executive inCharlotte, North Carolina, and Dr. Lonnie Strickland, Omicron.
Pictured here are the members of Omicron Chapter, University of Alabama, who attended the 37thSupreme Chapter. They were together at a reception honoring Mr. Pi Kappa Phi, Emmett Dendyand Hall of Fame achiever, Joe Sewell.

First inductees forPi Kappa Phi Hall of Fame"The Pi Kappa Phi Hall of Fameshall consist of selected alumni whohave distinguished themselves in thefields of Business, Industry, TheArts, Sciences, or Professions; andthereby have brought honor and re-spect to fraternity."
The 37th Supreme Chapter insti-tuted this most important recogni-tion and also installed the firstthree inductees. President Tappymade the presentation at the formalbanquet to the two living recipients. Each was given a handsome plaquewhich acknowledged the Hall ofFame recognition in emblem and inwords as follows:
"Over the years, the members ofour fraternity have engaged inmany varied professions; manyrising to outstanding levels ofaccomplishment, their achieve-ments recognized throughout theworld. PI KAPPA PHI feels it is justand fitting on this occasion in ourhistory to offer special recognitionto some of our most outstandingmembers. Tonight we install thefirst three members in honor of thecontributions each has made withinhis own profession. These threemen represent each of the twenty-five year segments of our history.
Representing our first quarter cen-tury is a member of Kappa Chapterat the University of North Carolina.Known throughout the world for
Talentednumber two man

We look for-ward to Nathan's contribution tothe fraternity.
his literary works is Brother ThomasWolfe. Readers and play-goers alikecan attest to his talent; recalling tomind such well known titles asLOOK HOMEWARD ANGEL orYOU CAN NEVER GO HOMEAGAIN. Brother Wolfe's touchingand humanistic style of writing hasmade him a well read, well remem-bered author and playwrite. Al-though Brother Wolfe has joinedthe Chapter Eternal, his name shallalways be with us. In recognition ofhis contributions to the world andthe nation, it is only right that heshould be admitted as the first mem-ber of the PI KAPPA PHI HALLOF FAME.
Representing our second twenty-five years is baseball's great JoeSewell. Graduating in 1920 fromthe University of Alabama, BrotherSewell starred for sixteen years;first with the Cleveland Indians andthen with the New York Yankees. He set two major league records, which still stand, and had a lifetimebatting average of 312. He had thedistinction of playing ball with suchgreats as Babe Ruth and LouGehrig. Later, Brother Sewellcoached for the University ofAlabama. From Omicron Chapter,
the second member of the PIKAPPA PHI HALL OF FAME isour Brother Joe Sewell.
Our third quarter century and third"inductee" in 1966 became thefirst Republican ever to be popular-ly elected to the U.S. Senate fromTennessee. He went on to be twicere-elected by an overwhelming mar-gin in 1972 and 1978. The thirdmember of the PI KAPPA PHIHALL OF FAME is SenatorHoward Baker, leader of the UnitedStates Senate, and the RepublicanParty's highest ranking elected offi-cial. In 1973, Brother Baker wonnational recognition as the Vice-Chairman of the Senate WatergateCommittee, and then served as thekeynote speaker at the Republican
National Convention in 1976. Amember of Alpha Sigma Chapter atthe University of Tennessee, BrotherBaker got an early start in politics, serving as the President of the Stu-dent Body in 1949. Tonight weproudly admit Senator HowardBaker as the third member of thePI KAPPA PHI HALL OF FAME.
These names represent men of ourfraternity who have excelled to thehighest degree in their chosen fieldsof endeavor, and thus have broughthonor and distinction to us, as wellas to themselves. They are men ofcourage and honor, and their namesshall always remain with us in theyears to come."
The Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity is fortunate to have six of its chief administrators alive and active. This is most unusual and actually constitutes a record for longevity in the Fraternity World. Atthe 37th Supreme Chapter five of these men were present for the anniversary activities.
They are shown in the accompanying picture, from left to right, as follows: Greg Elam, of BetaChapter at Presbyterian College, who served from 1957 to 1959, is now Vice President of GreatAmerican Reserve Insurance Company of Dallas, Texas. Greg was the Archon of the initiationteam for the model Ritual performed at the 50th Anniversary Convention. Therefore, the Ritualreinactment activity was of special interest to him.
Next is the present Executive Director, Durward Owen, Xi at Roanoke, serving since 1959. Tohis left is the first paid Administrator, George Sheetz, Alpha Chapter. George, a retired ArmyColonel, set the stage for all that followed him, commencing in 1923. He now lives in Thibodaux,Louisiana.
To his left is Howard Leake, Rho at Washington & Lee, semi-retired in Birmingham, Alabama.Howard took over in 1928 and was instrumental in relocating the Administrative Office fromCharleston to Chicago, Illinois. Absent from the picture was John McCann, Alpha Upsilon atDrexel, who took over from Leake in 1937 and served until the commencing of action in WorldWar II. John is a management consultant in Danbury, Connecticut.
Following the war, W. Bernard Jones, Jr., to the extreme right in the photograph, assumed theduties with an office in Richmond, Virginia. Jones had relocated the office to Sumter, SouthCarolina prior to being succeeded by now deceased Jim Wilson, Sigma at South Carolina, in 1954.

Many chapters make significant con-tributions to our fraternity's na-tional philanthropic project P.U.S.H.(Play Units for the Severely Handi-capped). However, four chapters ofPi Kappa Phi are truly dedicated intheir support of P.U.S.H. Thesechapters have raised in excess of$1,000.00 each during the 1978-79school year for P.U.S.H.

Mr.Pi Kappa Ph"One of the many highlights of the
Charleston convention was the
naming of Mr. Pi Kappa Phi for
1979. At the Awards Luncheon,
Emmett Orin Dendy, an alumnus of
Omicron Chapter at the University
of Alabama, was given the honor.
The Mr. Pi Kappa Phi Award is the
highest honor the Fraternity can
bestow on one of its members. The
selection is made only once a year
by the National Council from the
many nominations by alumni and
undergraduate members of Pi Kappa
Phi. The recipient is recognized for
his outstanding contributions and
continued fraternal dedication and
involvement with Pi Kappa Phi.
Emmett Dendy was born in 1925 in
a small Alabama town. He graduatedfrom high school in Luverne,
Alabama, in 1944 and chose the
University of Alabama to further
his education. In May of 1946, he
was initiated at Omicron Chapter,
thus beginning what would be his
long fraternal experience in Pi
Kappa Phi. While an undergraduate,
he was active in many chapter
activities. Following graduation, he
served in the United States Army
and in 1948 married the former Joy
Pearson.
Brother Dendy owns a successful
lumber company in Tuscaloosa -
Pearson Lumber. In addition, his
interests include cattle farming
in Mississippi.
His involvement with Pi Kappa Phi
has been phenomenal. Brother
Dendy has served Omicron Club,
Inc., for many years. The beautiful
Omicron Chapter house in Tusca-
loosa is one of the tangible results
of his efforts. For many years he
has assisted the undergraduate
chapter members in the area of
advice and counseling as Chapter
Advisor, and was selected as Pi
Kappa Phi Chapter Advisor of the
Year in 1972.
Emmett Dendy's service to Pi
Kappa Phi extends beyond Omi-
cron Chapter. During the construc-
tion phase of the Administrative
Office in Charlotte, North Carolina,
Brother Dendy contributed the
wood for the interior and exterior
of the building.
Truly deserving of Pi Kappa Phi's
top award, Dendy becomes the
15th Mr. Pi Kappa Phi in the
history of the fraternity.
