1971 war: Indian Navys finest hourDecember 4 is celebrated as Indian Navy Day and on this day, during the 1971 war, the navy

made the nation proud by dealing a death blow to the war-waging capabilities of the Pakistan

    Navy

In the 1971 war against Pakistan, Indian Navy carried out a daring raid on Karachi on

December 4, sinking three ships, severely damaging one and destroying a fuel depot.

This action resulted in the Pakistan Navy ships not venturing out from harbour for the

rest of the war, fearing another strike. It was Indian Navys finest hour. The navy of

today carries forward that indomitable spirit in the form of a formidable fleet and

superbly trained sea warriors. The induction of aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya adds

more lethality to the navys already impressive firepower. Aircraft carrier INS

Vikramaditya (above), the pride of the Indian Navy, was formally inducted into service

on November 16, 2013, at the Russian port of Severodvinsk. Weighing 40,000 tonnes,

which makes it the largest ship to have ever served in the navy, Vikramaditya will help

project Indias growing international clout well beyond its territorial waters. The Indian

Navy will be the only navy in the Indian Ocean to operate two aircraft carriers

simultaneously. The second aircraft carrier in service is the venerable INS Viraat, which

is all set to retire after reaching the end of its service life. However, a spanking new

state-of-the-art indigenous aircraft carrier, the INS Vikrant, will join the fleet in 2018,

further enhancing the offensive and defensive capabilities of the navy.

Kamov KA-28/31 helicopters, which will used for myriad of tasks ranging from

submarine hunting to airborne early warning roles. The MiG-29K is a navalised version

of the ground-based MiG-29 fighter aircraft, which has been in service with the Indian

Air Force since the mid-1980s. The MiG-29K will be the main offensive and defensive

asset of Vikramaditya. The MiG-29Ks main role will be to attack shore-based and naval

targets and also intercept and destroy any kind of aerial threats to the carrier battle

group, which includes not only the aircraft carrier but also escorting cruisers, frigates

Indian Navy Sea Harrier fighter aircraft lands at the Yelahanka air base in Bangalore.

The vertical take-off, landing (VTOL) Sea Harrier, also known as the jump jet, has

been in service on Indian Navy aircraft carriers for more than three decades. The Sea

Harrier is combat-tested fighter aircraft, having proven its mettle in the skies over South

Atlantic during the conflict between United Kingdom and Argentina over the disputed

Falklands Islands in 1982. Though in Indian Navy service, they didnt see any action,

Sea Harriers were always on standby to tackle any threat. The jets are on the verge of

bowing out of the navy and they will be replaced by more capable MiG-29K.
