IXo PUBLIC INFORMATION

55* Press Matter s c During the months under review, SHAPE received many inquiries from corresporaîents as to the reaction of this Headquarters to pos-sible reductions in the military establishments of the UK and the US* and the effect that such reductions might have upon the defensive capabilities of ACE. Since this was under discussion in each country and had not been officially proposed to SHAPE«* no official comment was made. However, the opportunity was utilized to emphasise» th« SHAPE concept of relying upon an air deterrent supported by a land/âir/sea shield of convential forces. It also was pointed out that SHAPE was making a continuing study of the forces required for the shield in view of the new weapons -systems that are making their appearance.

Many queries also were received from correspondents in connection with the decision on the part of Federal Authorities in Western Germany to propose to the Bundestag that the term of military conscription be twelve months . The fol-lowing reply was made to these queries:

ttSHAFE has always maintained that, from the purely military point of view, the minimum desirable period of national service is 2\\ months. This is con-sidered necessary to achieve the very high standard of efficiency which would un-doubtedly be required in any future war*

The question of how the German commitment to NATO is met is a matter for the Germans themselves.*

56. Pictorial Activities. Revised versions of the 16 mm film production "ALLIANCE FOR PEACEn were made available in September to Information Officers in Allied Conmiand Europe for release to television media and for use in briefings. This latest version includes the entry of Germany into NATO«

SHAPE is participating in two special motion picture projects. One, entitled "HIGH, WIDE AND HANDSOIffin, will be in Cinemascope and color, and will deal with NATO air power in Europe, and is being produced by NATO0 The other film is designed to orient US Anrçr and Air Force serviceman on duty in France, and is being produced by the US Anrçr Signal Corps.

"THE FIRST STEPS", a film of collateral interest to SHAPE, was released for distribution during the quarter in Germ&rçy. Produced by the German Ministry of Defence, it sets forth the problems being faced by Western Germany in beginning its military contribution to the defence of Western Europe.

57. Group Visits and Brxefings. Düring the period under review, $h groups comprising 2,250 people visited SHAPE and were briefed by Senior Officers of the Headquarters. Eight groups were personally addressed by SACEUR and seven by the Chief of Staff.
