on the plain teachings of Jesus Christ."

To his we fully subscribe. The Lutheran Church has always advo­

cated education-education of all the people, but not an education or the mind and body alone. We w a.nt an ed·ucation which includes thtl

WI! believe that without pnblic education there can be no great

)loti ieal liberty, no great social achievement. 1I0 real manhood or

woman11ood, because men become mentally stunted. But we also be­

lieve tha t a tme education mllst take into consideration the religions

aspIrations of man, or he will become morally stunted.

Where will the church get its teachers, missionaries and pastorkl'!

\Ver we to rely on our state institutions alone the church would won

be without leaders. One of our church schools has alone furnished

flfte n times as many pastors as the 12.000 high schools of the Unit,,\!

State .

We lIeed our church schools, not only to educate for leadership, bat for tbe common walks of life as well. \'I'e need devout, enlightened

member in the peWti as well as in tbe pulpits.

For these reasons we build and maintain our church schools. The5e

Ilre needs no other institutions can meet.

H I STORICAL SKETCH

The Pacific Lutheran Academy at Parkland, Wash., was estah­Iished by members of the Norw. Ev. Lutl!. Synod of America. It be­gan Its work in 18!J4 and continued until 1918. the la�t year ill conjunc­

tion with the Collpge at F<:yerett. In its field it rankl'd as one of the

best in the state.

The Columbia Lutheran Cullpge was built at F;\·erett. \\'a�· . . b�'

members of t he United No]'\\'. Luth. Church of Amerka. It opened it· doors for pupils in 1909, and continued its work unt.i1 the spring of 1919.

From 1911 it was under the direct mauagement of the United eh roll.

In ]919 both schools were closed to pupils. and the Cl)nsolidaten

sC'hool, The Pacifie Luthel'<ln College, which was to 1.)(' loc:l.ted at Parkland, \Viash., beg'an its prepul'ution for taking 'lIp the WOI'\{ under the new auspices. During the summel' of l!l�O the main building W :i

THE BUILDI NGS

oratory, the boys' sllOwel·S. The first noor cont ains all t he offices, the

r c.eption room. the library and study hall. the physical laboratory,

gu.e. i. rooms, t.wo cla�s rooms and two suites for teachers and a girls '

l' CI'ption 1'00111. On the second floor are four clasHooms, the boys'

clubroom and student.s' rooms, and on the third floOl' thirty·seven stu­

den .. s ' rooms 1llld the ho�'s' and girls' hospital rooms. On the fourth

floor, out from t.he main building, is the chemical laboratory.

The Chapel was erected at a cost of about $7,000, It is a fram e

buUd l n g, 40x60 feet, with a full concrete ba.sement. The ba-sement ha�

an a�sembly room aud a fully equipped kitchen.

The Gym nasium, one of the best on the west coast. is a frame

uil�ing on a concrete basement, 100x50 feet. The main floor has Il

fine running track, a large stage. dressing rooms, a moving llicture

outrt and an open floor of 50x80 for gamps. The basement when finished will contain a swimming' pool, 20x43.

THE LIBRARY

Th school library at \!resent has a eollection o[ sOllie 6,000 book;i

and i·amphlets, hesides a quanti ty of nnbound magazines. The largest

all£le additions to the library have been: Rpv . .T. O. \-loughen (aboUt.

400), HeY. C. N. 1\1. Carlsen (some :':;)0), Prof. J. M. Clary (some 200),

Prof. A. O. Aa berg (t�bout 1 :;0), Rey. O. Skattebol (some 70), and Rev.

G. 1. Breivik (about 130) Since last. year the ,books from Columbia

Colleg have been added. materially inereasing the li brary , which now

occup! s a large room on the fil'�t noor. From the library of the late

Rev . . '. P. Xa\'ier we haye also recei\·ed. about 100 volumes, and about

100 from Rev. A. Wold's libr:ny . Rev. J. Nordly donated $100 for which

bo l's haye been bought. His is all example worthy of imitation.

The library is also llsed as a study hall. The library fee is used for

impr "jng- and cularging this P;l1'1: of onr ;;chool equiplllent.

TH E C A M P U S

The College campus compriHeH about eighteen ac res, a fine pla.Y­

ground ior the pnpils. There are the base ball diamond, two ten·nis

wa; of location anti buildings, it realizes that these are not tbe most tlS5Emtiai factors of a good scbool. The teachers make the school. The

College has t.heref-ore spared no efforts to secure teachers who are

graduates of institutiolls of reput.e. and who bav had succes,[ul ex­

perience in �chool wor·k. They are loyal to t.he �chool , devoted t() their

work. capable, enthusiastic, and hcl[) [ul to our students. Several of the

teachers reside in the dormitory and come into daily contact with tire students. As companions and allvisers of the students they eel{ t.)

guid them to the highest id�mls of Christian manhood and woman­

bood.

OUR STUDENTS

Our lltudeuts re)Jresent the average boys alul girl!' of high school

age. Some of them have to support themselyes while attending school, and praetieally all have been accllstomed to work. 'rhey come t the

school witlr an inten se de,;ire to learn anrt improve themselves and it. is unnecessa r'y to add that they succeed.

EQUI PMENT

The "'h,'�ica I LalJoratory is fully equip)Jt'd to meet the require­

men ts of the hig'h school. and every year new apparatus are added.

Our other laboratories are rapidly being perfected. Here is a splendid

field of work for the Y. P. S:� the Alumni Association and Studen"

Societies.

A fireproof room on the fourth rloor has been fitted ont ror Uf

CiIemical Laboratory.

This Ia:bol'atory i:s fully equipped to teach high school chemistry ,'s

well as first anrt second year College chemistry. Accurate balancf}s

for quantitative work have been ins talled ; electric power (or hot pl ate s ,

drying ovens, etc., also up-to·date la.boratory desks w ith the neee s-'U')' apparatus and chemicals.

The Sc11001 also has a moving picture maehine and a balopticoll.
