An Afternoon at the Columbus Museum of Art

Exhibit: George Bellows and the American Experience Film: The World of Resplendent Wood Synagogues Sunday, October 13, 2013 — Free admission Sundays

Join fellow parishioners at the Columbus Museum of Art after the 10:30 service for a light lunch at the mini Palette Café and to view the George Bellows exhibit. Afterward, at 4:00 pm, for those who have the time and interest, the museum will present a documentary film about the rebuilding of 1731 Polish synagogue, which was destroyed in World War II. George Bellows and the American Experience The Columbus Museum of Art celebrates the return of one of America’s best artists and Columbus’ most beloved native sons with George Bellows and the American Experience. George Wesley Bellows is best known for his controversial boxing images and evocative urban scenes. He took the American art world by storm in the early 1900s, winning every major award and rising from art student to acclaimed luminary. Bellows captured the essence of his subjects and delivered it to his viewers with perception, compassion, and occasionally, outrage. The World of Resplendent Wood Synagogues In collaboration with The Ohio State University’s Melton Center for Jewish Studies, Rick and Laura Brown of Handshous studio present a film documenting the Gwozdziec project to rebuild components of an exquisite 17th century Polish wooden synagogue. The Gwozdziec Synagogue was a remarkable wooden synagogue built in the Polish Lithuanian Empire in 1731 that was destroyed during World War II and is being rebuilt using photographic and historical records.
