    Almost 125 years ater the invention o the automobile by Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, we are setting out to reinvent it.

    We are opening up new opportunities or growth or example with the marketing o batteries to third parties. And we are

    creating new alliances or instance with electricity providers to secure an alternative inrastructure or the alternative

    drive systems. An interview with Dr. Dieter Zetsche.

    Lets look ew years ahead. What will the car o the uture be like? The automobile is on the threshold o a new era. Oil reserves

    are limited and their use is contributing to climate change. At the same time, however, the demand or mobility is growing worldwide.

    This is why we are working intensively toward making our vehicles increasingly clean. In the long term, hydrogen and electricity will

    replace diesel and gasoline as the key currencies o mobility. This is one o our prime objectives: Last November, or example, we

    commenced small-series production o vehicles powered by the battery and the uel cell; large-scale practical operation will ollow in

    several German and European cities later this year.

    In technological terms, we have long since been on the move into

    the post-oil age. We are prepared or the uture. We will ultimately be

    driving emission-ree vehicles.

    o will we all soon be driving electric cars? Unortunately,

    e widespread shit to electric vehicles will not come about quite

    quickly. The technology is still very expensive. Furthermore,

    mobility requires a whole new inrastructure o charging points

    d hydrogen lling stations this still remains to be established.

    t were on the right track: In both o these areas, joint projects

    ve been initiated involving automotive manuacturers, energy

    ppliers, hydrogen producers, and the public sector.

    ow much potential does the internal combustion engine still

    ve? Quite a lot. In the medium term, ecient diesel and gasoline

    gines will remain the most signicant parameter in reducing

    missions. But we will be combining them with electrical components

    an increasing number o vehicles. Daimler has adopted a three-

    ack approach to cutting emissions and ultimately making the

    mission-ree vehicle reality. Track one: the highly ecient internal

    mbustion engine. Track two: hybrid drive. And track three: the

    ectric car powered by the battery or the uel cell.

    reen cars seem more like rational cars that dont have

    uch to do with driving pleasure. Are we now bidding arewell

    the premium car? Just the opposite: It is no coincidence that

    e rst hybrid rom a European manuacturer is a Mercedes-Benz

    Class. We even designed our new super sportscar the SLS

    MG right rom the outset with the option o purely electric drive.

    o automobile oers greater driving pleasure than the SLS. In

    ct, you could say that we are making ascinating cars greener,

    t are also making green cars more ascinating. So in uture, the

    mall and medium segments will also have more premium to

    er. And Mercedes-Benz customers, at least, will not have to

    oose between green and emotional: We oer them both.

    nd how well is Daimler prepared or the shit in demand in

    untries such as China, India, and Russia in comparison with

    s competitors? We are well prepared or this transition. With an

    crease o 65 percent in 2009, Mercedes-Benz was the astest-

    owing premium brand in China or the third time in succession.

    e are thereore boosting our production capacity and extending

    r distribution network in that country. Together with BYD, one

    the leading developers o automotive lithium-ion technology,

    e intend to develop an electric vehicle specically tailored to

    hinese requirements. We want to create a new brand to launch

    is innovative electric city car on the market. In the truck sector,

    we have intensied our cooperation with the Russian manuacturer

    Kamaz and increased our holding, thereby acilitating our access

    to the largest European market or heavy-duty trucks. So we are in

    a very good position not only in uture technologies, but also in the

    uture markets.

    Does this mean you are moving ahead with condence? Yes,

    because all the acts speak in our avor: During the crisis, Daimler

    set the course or uture success strategically, technologically,

    and o course in terms o our products. The new E -Class amily, or

    instance, has been available in all our model variants since early

    2010; this gives us an edge over our competitors. In the course o

    this year we will be coming up with even more innovations such

    as the new CLS. Th e most economical and environment-riendly

    S-Class to date will likewise be launched on the market. New and

    attractive products will also be seen in the truck, van, and bus

    segments. And were leading the way in electrical mobility.

    The Mercedes-Benz F 800 Style (at right) shows that green technology

    can go hand in hand with ascinating premium vehicles.

    The Road to Emission-

    ree Mobility.

    Emission-ree, quiet, sae, and comortable the

    uel cell systems rom Daimler. Electric vehicles

    with uel cells generate their power directly on board;

    with their large operating range and short r eueling

    times, they are ideally suited or long-distance tr avel.

    They run on hydrogen, which is used to generate

    electricity within the uel cell or the electric motor.

    This technology has proved highly eective, since the

    uel cells eciency actor is around twice that o the

    modern combustion engine. Another advantage is that

    it gives rise to no local emissions: The only exhaust

    component is water. And i the hydrogen is derived

    rom renewable energy sources, the overall environ-

    mental balance is positive.

    r its uture. Daimlers Road to Emission-ree Mobility initiative

    ands or our commitment. Our goal is to greatly reduce the uel

    nsumption and emissions o our vehicles already today and

    eliminate them altogether in the long term. To this end, we are

    veloping a broad spectrum o state-o-the-art drive technologies

    at meet the specic requirements placed on the mobility o today

    d tomorrow in all sectors o road transport.

    e are pursuing a consistent course: All relevant technologies

    om the CDI and BlueTec diesels, through uel injection (CGI)

    d hybridization, up to electric drive with the battery and the uel

    ll have undergone urther development, and in some cases

    tered series production several years ago. Already today, we oer

    ghly eective technologies or even greater eciency, environ-

    ental compatibility, and saety. And on the basis o specic

    research ndings and experience gained in the course o successul

    large-scale projects, we have set the course or locally emission-

    ree driving.

    Our solution is an intelligent blend o drive concepts. No

    other premium automotive manuacturer is in such a

    avorable overall position as we are to oer comprehensive

    sustainable mobility.

    For a mobile uture: Daimler initiates inrastructure and

    mobility initiatives. The testing o alternative uels and develop-

    ment o an appropriate inrastructure are likewise gaining

    signicance. Whether it be electrical charging points or hydrogen

    lling stations, intelligent trac management or telematics

    Daimler actively initiates and accompanies model trials and pilot

    projects or a mobile sustainable uture. One example o this is

    the e-mobility Berlin project, which is laying the oundation

    or emission-ree driving with battery-electric drive systems.

    Daimler will be carrying out similar e -mobility projects in 2010

    in Rome, Milan, and Pisa. With car2go, we also launched an

    innovative mobility concept in 2008 that makes or a new, versatile,

    environmentally compatible mode o city driving: Participants can

    simply get in and drive o anywhere, at any time. A feet o

    vehicles is available to users in Ulm every day, around the clock,

    with billing on a minute-by-minute basis; reueling, parking, and

    cleaning are included in this oer. The innovative car2go mobility

    concept was also launched on an international basis in late 2009

    in Austin, Texas.

    Toward a hydrogen inrastructure with the H2-Mobility

    initiative. In September 2009, leading industrial enterprises

    reached an agreement or the establishment o a close-knit

    hydrogen supply inrastructure in Germany. The joint objective

    o Daimler, EnBW, Linde, OMV, Shell, Total, Vattenall, and the

    National Organization or Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology

    (NOW) is to press ahead with large-scale production o uel cell

    electric vehicles. This memorandum is based on an initiative

    by Daimler and Linde or the est ablishment o a comprehensive

    hydrogen reueling network.

    Daimlers mobility initiatives go hand in hand with the development o an appropriate inrastructure. With the H2-Mobility initiative, Daimler is pressing

    ahead with the establishment o a comprehensive hydrogen illing station network.

    Daimler is the worlds irst automotive manuacturer to develop and, as

    o 2012, to produce and market its own batteries or automotive application.

    In long-distance transport, gasoline and diesel engines will constitute the mainstay o mobility or some time to come. The irst element

    o our sustainable mobility initiative comprises optimized, highly energy-eicient vehicles with internal combustion engines or

    greatly reduced uel consumption and emission levels. We are also committed to the development o clean and alternative uels.

    Additional potential is created by the electriication o the automobile. In the second element o our drive strategy, we are thereore

    working towards hybridization o the drivetrain in accordance with individual requirements. To this end, we have developed a modular

    hybrid system that oers various possibilities or extension in terms o perormance and range o vehicle applications and thus sets

    new technological and economic standards.

    Emission-ree driving with battery and uel cell vehicles is the third element o our drive strategy. We have been paving the way or these

    developments with our pioneering activities above all in the ield o uel cell technology. A prerequisite or widespread electriication

    o the drivetrain is powerul, sae, and aordable battery technology. We will thereore be the irst automotive manuacturer to develop,

    produce, and market its own state-o-the-art lithium-ion batteries.

    which we are traveling along several tracks into the uture.

    nergy-ecient internal combustion engines. A hundred

    odern cars produce on average less emissions than one single

    tomobile rom the 1970s. Since that time, the diesel consump-

    on o heavy-duty vehicles has also been reduced by more than

    e-third. These are just two examples that show how successul

    ciency measures can be in the classic drive segment. But

    ats not all. The key to greater eciency and environmental

    mpatibility lies in electrication o the drivetrain. This oers

    mense scope or improvement, which is being realized or example

    auxiliary units, the automatic start/stop system, and hybridization.

    this end, Daimler has developed a modular hybrid system

    itable or all hybrid drive variants: rom the automatic start-stop

    nction, through recuperation and booster unctions, up to purely

    ectric driving. A urther option is the plug-in hybrid, in which the

    ttery can be recharged at a conventional domestic power

    cket to increase the vehicles electric range. The Mercedes-Benz

    400 HYBRID, or example, is the rst European luxury-class

    brid model with lithium-ion battery. With the combination o

    an advanced V6 engine and a compact hybrid module it has

    the lowest CO2

    emissions o just 186 grams per kilometer among

    gasoline-powered cars in its category.

    The BlueEFFICIENCY package or all passenger car model

    series. Daimler has grouped together all measures or uel economy

    in gasoline and diesel passenger cars in the BlueEFFICIENCY

    packages, which will be available in 85 Mercedes-Benz vehicle

    models by the end o 2010.

    The Daimler Trucks initiative Shaping Future Transportation.

    With its Clean Drive Technologies, Daimlers commercial vehicle

    sector is shaping the uture o mobility. Whether it be exhaust gas

    atertreatment with BlueTec and SCR catalyst, driving with natural

    gas, or feet tests with hybrid buses and trucks Daimler is at the

    oreront o developments toward emission-ree driving in goods

    and passenger transportation.

    The internal combustion engine will remain the mainstay o mobility

    or some time to come. Its eciency is crucial to hybridization made

    to measure.

    Hybridization made to measure. With the Mercedes-Benz S 400

    HYBRID, we are the rst European manuacturer to oer a luxury-

    class hybrid passenger car rom large-scale production. The

    technology-bearer Mercedes-Benz S 500 Vision Plug-in HYBRID is

    showing the way into the uture: With a certied uel consumption

    o only 3.2 liters o gasoline per 100 kilometers and a purely

    electric operating range o 30 kilometers, it oers green technology

    in a ascinating vehicle.

    The modular hybrid system also opens up numerous possibilities

    or use in commercial vehicles. No other manuacturer oers

    more vehicles with hybrid drive. With around 2,700 Orion hybrid

    buses on the roads o Nor th America, more than 550 Freightliner

    vehicles, and some 800 light-duty tru cks and buses rom Fuso,

    Daimler is the world market leader in this eld. Approximately 30

    Mercedes-Benz diesel hybrid buses will enter regular service in

    Europe in the course o 2010.

    Trendsetting: The technology-bearer Mercedes-Benz S 500 Vision Plug-in

    HYBRID, which is ushering in the uture o the plug-in modular hybrid

    system, is the irst luxury-class model in the three-liter car category.

    Along the road to emission-ree driving, Daimler is also leading the way in the commercial vehicle sector with its Shaping Future Transportation initiative.e Mercedes-Benz BlueEFFICIENCY leet will have grown to 85 models by the end o 2010.

    ree electric vehicles with battery or uel cell lead the way to the uture: the smart ortwo electric drive, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-CELL and the

    ercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL.

    In the commercial vehicle sector, the zero-emission Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid city bus and the battery-powered Mercedes-Benz E-Vito are commencing

    trial operation with customers in 2010.

    ocally emission-ree driving. The uture has begun: Numerous

    ectric and uel cell test vehicles have already proved their worth

    eld trials. Their technical easibility has been demonstrated

    r example with 100 electric smarts in London. This concept is

    ow ready or series production. We are the rst automotive

    anuacturer to drive into the zero- emission era, already in 2010

    three production-ready models. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class

    CELL is an entirely new vehicle. As o October 2010, It will extend

    ercedes-Benz Cars range o purely electrically powered auto-

    obiles, which already includes the smart ortwo electric drive the

    oneer o battery-powered vehicles that already started to leave

    e production line in November 2009. Series production o the

    ercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL has also already begun.

    Under the banner o electric mobility. Like the smart electric drive

    and the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL, the new Mercedes-Benz

    A-Class E-CELL is also powered by a highly ecient lithium-ion

    battery. While the smart attains a convincing operating range o

    135 kilometers, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class represents the bench-

    mark in its segment with 200 kilometers. The Mercedes-Benz

    B-Class F-CELL, which carries its uel on board, can cover 400

    kilometers on one lling, either in emission-ree city driving or in

    long-distance overland travel. Its tanks can be completely relled

    with gaseous hydrogen in only about three minutes via a lling

    nozzle that has now been standardized throughout the world.

    In the commercial vehicle sector, customer trials o the zero-

    emission Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid city bus will commence in 2010.

    Likewise in 2010, the battery-powered Mercedes-Benz E-Vito will

    also be produced in an initial small series. Nevertheless, there are

    still are a number o challenges remaining to be met beore electric

    vehicles can become part o our everyday lives: or example a

    greater operating range and higher perormance, along with the

    matters o system costs and the inrastructure.

    The battery is the key to uture systematic electrication o

    the drivetrain. To this end, Daimler is developing state-o-the-art

    lithium-ion batteries, and as o 2012 will thus be the worlds rst

    carmaker to develop, manuacture, and distribute its own batteries

    or automotive use. The Group has already led more than 600

    patents relating to battery-powered vehicles over the past 30 years

    including more than 230 in the eld o lithium-ion technology.

    This battery technology is also used in uel cell vehicles. Daimler

    has been carrying out research in this eld since 1994, during

    which time it has impressively demonstrated its pioneering role

    with 180 patents.

    The Vision o

    Accident-ree Driving.

    Daimler has already been working toward optimizing

    automotive saety or many decades. To date, we

    have introduced numerous technologies and systems

    on the market that have been shown to enhance the

    saety o all vehicles rom Daimler, whether passenger

    cars or commercial vehicles. Many o these systems

    have gradually been adopted by other manuacturers.

    Countless accidents have thus been able to be prevented,

    or their consequences mitigated.

    Daimlers saety systems are thus o benet to all road

    users. But our endeavors do not stop there: Despite all

    our success in the past, we are continuing our research

    in order to come increasingly closer to realizing the

    Vision o Accident-ree Driving.

    From the irst crumple zone to the vehicle as a

    hinking partner. Daimler has invariably been the

    pioneer o developments in vehicle saety.

    Passive saety or vehicle occupants and other road users.

    The ongoing development o the crumple zone continues to ensure

    saety in the vehicle interior; occupant protection is enhanced

    even urther with adaptive airbags, seat belt tensioners, belt orce

    limiters, and the sensor-controlled crash-active NECK-PRO head

    restraints.

    The PRE-SAFE preventive occupant protection system, which

    provides a unique synergy o active and passive saety, is now

    standard equipment in all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. I the

    system registers a hazardous situation on the basis o sensor

    inormation, it triggers protective measures in a refex action. The

    seat belts and airbags can thus deploy their ull protective eect on

    impact. Unparallelled saety or bus drivers and ront passengers in

    a head-on collision is ensured by Front Collision Guard (FCG),

    a standard eature in the Mercedes-Benz and Setra TopClass

    Travego 400 touring coaches.

    Active saety that supports the driver in all situations. The

    interaction o state-o-the-art radar and braking technology

    prevents about 36 percent o all rear-end collisions on express-

    ways. Daimler is setting store by radar to register a vehicles

    5 billion people throughout the world participate in trac

    n a daily basis. We intend to make the uture o mobility as

    e as possible or these people. As the pioneers o saety,

    e are pursuing our Vision o Accident-ree Driving.

    la Barnyi, the ather o passive saety, initiated the Vision

    Accident-ree Driving at Daimler in the 1950s. One product

    this activity was the rigid occupant cell with crumple zones,

    st introduced in 1959 in the S-Class. Fur ther groundbreaking

    hievements were the anti-lock braking system r om 1978, the

    rbag in 1981, and the rst electronic stability control (ESP)

    stem, which has been included in all Mercedes-Benz passenger

    rs as standard since 1999. The impressive result o these saety

    novations: Accident statistics or 2008 registered only one-third

    the number o atalities or 1953 even though there are now

    ree times the number o vehicles on German roads.

    oad saety is a holistic task. The objective o Daimlers

    tegrated saety philosophy is to protect and support all road

    ers in every situation. In the development o active saety

    stems or risk prevention and o accident mitigation systems,

    we adopt a real-lie saety approach based on accidents actually

    occurring. We have been investigating accidents on German roads

    since 1969. These ndings provide important impetus or the

    development o new saety technologies. Thanks to their use, the

    incidence o the most requent types o accidents in Germany

    collisions at intersections, rear-end accidents, and veering o the

    road has allen signicantly. And i an accident should neverthe-

    less occur, warning and saety systems help prevent ollow-up

    accidents. Specially developed rescue guidelines support re

    brigades and emergency services in the rapid salvaging o vehicle

    occupants.

    Partner protection is another important component o our

    saety philosophy. For many years, the Daimler engineers

    have been developing technologies that provide additional

    protection or pedestrians and cyclists in an accident. Vehicle

    bodies without protrusions, energy-absorbing bumpers, and

    underride protection or trucks are just a ew examples.

    practically all weather conditions and is not highly susceptible

    to intererence. Examples o radar-based saety systems are

    DISTRONIC PLUS cruise control, Brake Assist PLUS, and the

    PRE-SAFE brake in passenger cars, along with Blind Spot Assist,

    buses.

    Around one in six accidents in Germany are the result o a vehicle

    veering o the road. Help is at hand here in the orm o Lane

    Keeping Assist in passenger cars, Lane Departur e Warning or

    trucks, and the Lane Assistant (SPA) in buses. Highbeam Assist

    in cars makes or improved vision: A camera registers the trac

    situation and by means o an intelligent image processing

    algorithm not only recognizes other illuminated vehicles, but also

    calculates their distance. Night View Assist PLUS is a urther

    saety innovation or cars: Two separate headlamps illuminate the

    road with an invisible, non-dazzling inrared light. A camera

    transmits the scenario in ront o the vehicle to an onboard display.

    Cyclists and obstacles are shown as grayscale images, and

    pedestrians are additionally highlighted by means o a specially

    developed recognition eature.

    With the Vision o Accident-ree Driving, Daimler has been analyzing real accidents or over 40 years. These indings provide impetus or the

    development o new saety technologies that are o beneit to all Daimlers brands.

    The vehicle as an intelligent partner. With PRE-SAFE and

    ATTENTION ASSIST, Daimler is the worlds only automotive producer

    to oer assistance systems that execute refex, intelligent

    actions. These two systems are networked with other onboard

    systems, with which they exchange data. On the basis o the
