tions manager Stuart Allott says the ball is in Mornington Peninsula Shire’s court as the two parties agreed on two possible options at a meeting last week and it was now up to the shire to “de-

termine the approach forward”.Area councillor David Garnock says

the CCTV system was supposed to be installed last October but United En-ergy said it was concerned about the 240-volt camera power supply wire making four of its collapsible steel electricity poles unsafe if hit by a car.

Shire officers and United Energy first met formally in early 2013 to negoti-ate placing cameras on the power com-

pany’s blue poles. Nine cameras have been allocated for High St, nearby roads and big public car parks. Five cameras will be on concrete or wooden poles but four remain in boxes while United Energy negotiates with the shire as well as the state Department of Justice.Cr Garnock said the October dead line

had been shifted to December but did not occur due to “United Energy policy”.

Cr Garnock said he attended a meeting on 11 February hosted by Crime Prevention Minister Edward O’Donohue, which included United Energy, Hastings MP Neale Burgess and shire officers.“United Energy is worried its fran-

gible poles could cause electro cu-tions,” he said.“The company seems to have differ-

ent rules from other power companies,

which allow CCTV cameras on their poles.”

Cr Garnock said shire officers had held two meetings with the power com pany since February and were working hard with Department of Jus-tice officers to try and satisfy United Energy’s conditions.He hoped the impasse would be re-

By Chris BrennanAFL legend Lenny Hayes reckons Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League players are the coolest foot-ballers in the land.

The inspirational St Kilda mid-fielder and fellow AFL hard-nut Mel-bourne co-captain Nathan Jones have signed on as ambassadors to a unique program that aims to make the penin-sula’s junior league a showpiece for fair play and sportsmanship.

If the Keep Your Cool program succeeds in eliminating aggressive behaviour on both sides of the fence, the AFL wants to roll out the scheme nationally.

The program was developed by peninsula parents concerned about the level of aggression and hostil-ity creeping into junior ranks. In one ugly incident last August, a boy was punched during an under-14s final be-tween Mt Martha and Somerville.

Keep Your Cool co-chairperson Wendy Hanrahan said the idea began with casual conversations between parents watching their children play during last year’s finals.

“We’d been witnessing some trou-bling behaviours on both sides of the fence and felt something needed to be done to address the aggression and en-sure football remained fun and safe,” she said.

“Children seem to feel pressured to go really hard and play aggressively, and this can sometimes spill over into actual violence, but there’s obviously a big difference between professional AFL matches and under-10s.

“It’s a tough, physical game and eve-

SOMERVILLE Newsagency has hit the TattsLotto jackpot again, selling a $1 million winning ticket to a soon-to-be retired couple almost exactly a year after selling a $500,000 winning entry.

The couple, aged in their early 60s, said they were “pinching themselves” after picking up the $1,042,666.65 first division prize in the 1 March draw.

The winning ticket-holder, who wished to remain anonymous, purchased a 36-game QuickPick entry but said she was certain she going to lose.

“I thought for sure I wouldn’t win because when the guy at the newsagency served me I thought, ‘I never win anything when he sells me tickets’. I had a bit of a superstition about it, but this time he had the magic touch,” she said.

“When I checked the winning numbers online on Saturday night, I started shaking like a leaf. I walked into the lounge room and told my husband, ‘I think we’ve won TattsLotto!’”

She said they had a long wish-list of things they wanted to achieve.

“We’ll be able to retire in a few years after paying off our mortgage and clearing debt. Then we’ll be able to afford the overseas cruise we’ve been dreaming of,” she said.

“My husband and I have said that we’re glad we won at this age in our 60s while we’re still able to enjoy the prizemoney and help set up our children with their own homes.”

Somerville couple’s million dollar win

By Keith PlattDIVERS and marine salvage experts are searching the seabed between Hastings and Phillip Island for two 18-metre long steel legs that fell off a barge used for geotechnical and geo-physical surveys for the planned ex-pansion of the Port of Hastings.

The barge lost sections of its four 30-metre legs after working off Sandy Point on Saturday 22 February.

Each leg weighs 7-9 tonnes.It is understood two legs that broke

off as the jack-up barge Sea Lift 1 was being prepared to start drilling have yet to be recovered.

They are in about 20 metres of wa-ter.

The two remaining legs disappeared when the disabled barge was being towed to the channel off Phillip Island.

The 18-metre long Sea Lift 1 is owned and operated by Sydney-based Australian Barge Hire. Its sister barge Sea Lift 3 is continuing to drill the Western Port seabed off BlueScope Steel while Sea Lift 1 awaits repairs on the slipway at Crib Point Engineering near Hastings.

Although divers are yet to find the missing two legs, it is understood sea lanes in and out of the port have been declared safe.

A report into the incident is being prepared for the harbourmaster and Port of Hastings Development Au-thority, which hired the two barges for the survey.

Authority CEO Mike Lean said the first two legs broke away from the barge when it was being lowered into position before starting drilling.

Survey barge loses sea legs

“It looks like they have broken along a weld line,” Mr Lean told The News on Monday.

“I can’t speculate why, but there’s been nothing wrong until now.”

Mr Lean said the two barges had drilled 30-40 holes as part of the hy-drological survey.

The incident had “slowed things down” but the survey work was con-tinuing in the northern section of the study area.

“It won’t impact on the overall schedule,” he said.

“We had looked at it from a risk po-

tential and it’s not unusual for these things to lose a leg.”

Mr Lean said the loss of the barge would not lead to any extra costs for the authority.

It is understood the barge was able to operate in tidal flows or currents of up to six knots and winds of up to 50km/h.

Australian Barge Hire’s website says the damaged Sea Lift 1 uses electronic instead of hydraulic controls for all barge jacking operations.

In standard configuration, the barge has one spud, or leg, in each corner,

which can be 12, 18 or 30 metres long. A central generator powers two hy-

draulic pumps with a mobile control panel enabling the operator to watch all operations.

“Electronic sensors provide the ope-rator with status indications at the control panel and electronic interlocks prevent inadvertent operation at the spud control,” the website states.

“All of the hydraulic supply lines, valve banks and control systems that operate Sea Lift 1 are located below deck to minimise the risk of both en-vironmental and mechanical damage.”

PENINSULA Surfriders Club is planning a “spectacular event” to celebrate its 40th anniversary later this month.

Secretary Jane Featherston said the club had cultivated a “rich history of surfing life throughout the Mornington Peninsula”.

Peninsula “surfing pioneers” Ted Bainbridge, John Wilson, Skip Easton, Mick Pearce and Michael Schaeffer had officially started the club at a committee meeting held behind a surf shop in Frankston.

“At the time, in the early 1970s, there was a growing group of surfers on the peninsula who were becoming a force to be reckoned with in Victorian surfing,” she said.

This “force” from the peninsula started in 1972 when Mick Parkinson of Blairgowrie won the Victorian junior title.

He was followed the following year by Ian Portingale – and Carol Watts won the women’s title.

“In 1974 we had Ian first and Phil Trigger second in the Victorian open men’s event, which was a huge effort,” Ms Featherston said.

“Carol won the women’s again. Rob Licciardo won the juniors in 1975 and Warren Partington the senior men’s title.”

Ms Featherston said the club’s strength was proved again in 1976 when Portingale and Phil Trigger “did a one-two again in the open men’s” and its juniors took out the first three places at state titles: Kelly Pritchard, 1; Gary Burns, 2; and Ian Cochrane, 3.

The same year Alan “Wally” Tibballs won the Easter Bells trials event.

Mick Pierce won in 1977 and Ian Cochrane won the juniors that year with Phil Coates in 1978 and ’79. In 1986, Garry Taylor won the Easter Bells trials event.

“Before PSC started there were no regular peninsula surfers who attained such high positions in Victorian contests. There were plenty from northern bayside suburbs, but they all surfed the Torquay area,” Ms Featherston said.

“Now, 40 years later, after thousands of memberships, PSC

has grown and evolved to be one of the most respected and successful surfriding clubs in Australia. Friendships and families have been built on mutual lifetimes spent in the waves around the peninsula, and the world.”

All past and present members of the club, their families and friends have been invited to celebrate its 40th from 2pm at the clubhouse, 691 Truemans Rd, Fingal (near Gunnamatta) on Saturday 22 March. Entry is $10.

By Chris BrennanMORNINGTON Peninsula CRAB members are making a welcome addition to menus across the region, and the tasty treats they’re serving up at events are helping turn the tide against cancer.

The peninsula branch of the Cancer Research Advocate Bikers group – known as the CRAB Hermits – have been gathering momentum with sales of tasty tucker from a mobile food van, with recent appearances at the Western Port Festival and Tyabb Air Show, and a gig at the Red Hill Show on Saturday.

While crustaceans aren’t on the menu, the roast beef and gravy rolls have been proving popular.

chairman Merv Gillespie said the not-for-profit charity’s sole purpose was raising funds for cancer research.

“Our membership is comprised entirely of volunteers who have been touched in some way by cancer and have a common love of motorcycles,” he said.

The group was formed more than 10 years ago by Rob Grimstone after he lost his mother to cancer. Various chapters of the organisation have since formed across Australia, as well as one in Switzerland, and collectively they’ve raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Each chapter is named after an indigenous crab species, with the peninsula group adopting the hermit crab.

“Although as a social club we have

regular club rides both near and far, it is not a prerequisite for membership to own a motorbike as there are generally spare pillion seats up for grabs,” Mr Gillespie said.

“One method of fundraising is the preparation and sale of takeaway food from our fully equipped club caravan, for which we have all the necessary permits and insurances.

“Our signature menu item has become the roast beef and gravy roll but we can turn our hand to most take-away food.”

The CRAB Hermits are looking to grow their profile and are always ready to welcome new members or volunteers.

CRABs on a roll for charityCancer crusade: CRABs bikers are no hermits when it comes to raising funds for cancer research.

DRIVERS with outstanding fines have no place to hide – authorities now know where they will be.

New equipment is being used to track down serial fine evaders. Police and sheriff officers set up a roadblock on Rutherford Rd on-ramp at EastLink tollway in Carrum Downs on a Wed-nesday morning earlier this month in the hope of nabbing some big fish.

The operation paid off. A driver was caught with 445 outstanding warrants totalling just under $125,000. His four-wheel drive was impounded and towed away.

Victorian sheriff Brendan Facey said data analysis found 33 people with out-standing warrants used the Ru therford Rd access road regularly.

“Some people are using toll roads

every day and refusing to pay their tolls, building a huge debt from the fines they are ignoring,” Mr Facey said.

Sheriff officers recovered $27,710 as a result of the roadblock. Thirty-six fare evaders with 1047 warrants owing $312,974 were pulled over.

“This operation should serve as a warning to other fine evaders that we are looking to target people where we know they are,” Mr Facey said.

Six cars were clamped with all but one of the owners making immediate payments to ensure they could drive on.

Motorists can call 1300 SHERIFF to discuss outstanding fines.

Sheriff’s officers have powers to sus-pend driving licences and regis tration, clamp cars, seize property and arrest people.

THE Environment Protection Authority ordered Massoni Wines in Dromana’s industrial estate to repair and service its wastewater treatment plant after red effluent was allegedly released several times into a stormwater drain that runs into Sheepwash Creek.

The order followed complaints from residents midFebruary that a factory in Brasser Ave was discharging a substance. A spokesperson for the EPA said the wine company had completed maintenance on its plant in early March. Monitoring put in place would prevent further discharges.

The factory’s treatment plant discharge diversion valve was found to be defective and had allowed water used during wine production to escape into the stormwater system.

Massoni winemaker Phillip Kettle told The News he would not disclose the company’s dealings with the EPA.

“Look, we’re in the middle of pressing and all I want to say is that we comply with all government regulations,” he said.

The alleged discharges occurred at least twice during February when the flow of the creek was very low after several weeks of dry conditions.

One of the complainants, who did not want to be named, said it appeared a large volume of red wine-coloured waste had ended up in the creek.

“At this time of year when flow rates are low, the waste stayed in the creek, causing an intense smell and probably damaging any aquatic life.

“This is at least the third such discharge in the past 6 months.”

DAVID Gill cheerfully admits to being the newest member of Somers Foreshore Committee but fully expects to face expulsion after tonight’s (Tuesday) meeting, where he will call on some members to resign.

“We need fresh faces prepared to build on the decades of proven strategy developed by qualified professionals and knowledgeable volunteers,” Mr Gill said.

In a series of articles submitted to The News, Mr Gill had no hesitation in criticising individuals, governments and government departments for what he sees as mismanagement of the state’s coastline.

“I have presented detailed evidence to many senior officers at DEPI, local [Hastings] MP Neale Burgess, the minister and now, as a last resort, publicly.

“Most complaints are fobbed off; no department takes responsibility. Jurisdiction is made confusing, people give up and the illegal fence or bathing box remains.

“Worst of all, no one can even obtain a register of these types of complaints, perhaps because an overall list would show the real level of illegal intrusion onto the public’s land.”

While taking a broad brush to coastal management, he zooms in on Somers, one of a string of coastal villages stretching from Hastings to Flinders along the east coast of Western Port.

Mr Gill, once president of the former Shire of Mornington, blames cronyism, politics and ignorance for much of what he says is wrong with coastal management.

In the case of Somers – a reasonably wealthy residential enclave that is big enough to support a school and yacht club but not a shopping centre – he supports his arguments with aerial photos and maps.

Mr Gill, who lives at neighbouring Balnarring Beach, was appointed to the Somers Foreshore Committee in late 2013 after being interviewed by two officers from the department.

He was one of two candidates for chairman, but the committee has been run without the position being filled because neither had the support of a clear majority of members.

“[Department of Environment and Primary Industries] maps show ille

gal bathing boxes, fences [and] even bridges,” Mr Gill stated in one article given to The News.

“Department maps all around Victoria will show the same thing – the department basically ignores intrusions because it takes too much time and money to resolve.”

Mr Gill compared the outcomes of high-profile coastal land issues, from the exercise of land rights by businessman Lindsay Fox at Portsea, and the successful campaign to force retail billionaire Solomon Lew to demolish a swimming pool partly built on Crown land at Mt Eliza, to surreptitious land grabs that escape public notice or scrutiny.

“In places, our coastline has been ‘legally’ privatised and appropriated through some strange adverse possession regulations and also illegally fenced,” he wrote. “Yes, the latter still happens surreptitiously today. Yet this is only part of the problem.

“Apparently more than 60 organisations control the Victorian coastline. Many of these government or volunteer management groups do a sterling job. Some do not.

“Funding is arbitrary and mostly subject to the ability to secure ad hoc grants or down to luck in having a source of income – some major, like a camping reserve, some minor, like rental from a yacht club.

“Recent studies by the Victorian National Parks Association and others reveal that many of the habitats along our shoreline are threatened by overdevelopment, lack of resourcing and poor local decision-making.”

Mr Gill said a specific waste of taxpayers’ money can be plainly seen at the top of a cliff at Somers.

The strip of land covered by bark is a “ridiculous pilot program on Eastern Flats with no benefit to the foreshore”.

He said the $6000 spent on the exercise from DEPI’s public health and safety budget was “wasted on feeding the rabbits”.

advertisement for Al’s Jobbing Shop – it was placed by an experienced tradesman named Alan Mott.

The advert signalled the intention of the 85-year-old Hastings resident to return to the workforce.

Sadly, Mr Mott’s venture had barely got off the ground when his health deteriorated and he was admitted to St George’s Nursing Home in Altona Meadows in mid-2013.

In September 2013, Alan’s wife, who had

been in care for several years suffering from dementia, died.

On Sunday 23 February, Mr Mott had a heavy fall at the nursing home and was admitted to Western General Hospital where he died two days later on 25 February. He was 86.

WALTER Leslie Mosely was a firey man, as 42 years of dedicated service to the Country Fire Authority bears testimony.

The Hastings fire brigade life mem-ber, affectionately known as Wally, died peacefully on 28 February and was farewelled at a large service at-tended by dozens of family members, friends and past and present CFA volunteers and officials, who formed a guard of honour.

He joined Hastings CFA in 1971 and continued as an active member attending fires until age 65.

After this, he continued to serve the organisation he so loved by providing support to the unit when the brigade was called out. He helped clean the station each week until just weeks before his death.

He was born into a family of 15, and had seven brothers (Ernest, George, Wally, Tommy, Donny, Alfie and John) and eight sisters (Emma, Dorothy, Irene, Elsie, Marjorie, Iso-bel, Lillian and Elizabeth).

He remained the loving husband of wife Vivienne for 48 years, with whom he had three children – Tim, Les and Lawrence. He had four grandchildren, Nick, Ruby, Jenny and Tessa.

Son Les Mosely said Wally was born into hardship during the Great Depression.

“Due to a family issue and without the support networks we have today, the family was split up and Wally went to live with the Jones family for a period,” he said in his eulogy to his father.

“Dad never really spoke of his childhood much. I know he spoke of

a farm at Merricks and of going to school by horse.”

He was called up for national service duty before gaining an ap-prenticeship as a fitter and turner at Australian National Airlines.

“There was a trip around Australia with a German mate in a VW Beatle,” Les said. “The trip was in the late 1950s or early 1960s without the sealed roads of today.

“My Mum met my Dad through an outing with the Parker family. They

enjoyed dancing, especially at Leg-gett’s and the Palais.

“Mum said that when she met Wally, he was a good and kind-hearted man. He was also good looking. Dur-ing early courting, he gave my Mum orchids and even my Mum’s mum; this greatly annoyed my Mum’s dad.

“There were jobs at Lysaghts/BHP, Hastings Shire and Transwest. With the job at Lysaghts, he moved into a house on the corner of Salmon St and Reid Pde in Hastings”

He said Wally was a good, kind per-son “in an old-school kind of way”.

“He didn’t tolerate people who lived their life to excess. He wasn’t inter-ested in new cars, fads or things. He wasn’t interested in gossip; he made or had no enemies. He helped the community; he supported my mum and my brother Tim for his entire working life. He was a good husband a good dad and a good man who will be missed.”

electronically linked and supply footage to Hast-ings police station, although they would not be monitored 24/7 as this was not a good use of re-sources.

Mr Allott said the “health and safety of our community, United Energy line workers and council sub-contractors is of the highest impor-tance”.

“United Energy is supportive of the installation of CCTVs on its electricity network assets.

“We have worked closely with a number of councils across our net work to ensure CCTV programs are implemented on the appropriate electricity infrastructure,” he said.

“United Energy has been working with Morn-ington Peninsula Shire Council since mid-2012 on this issue, with a formal request coming from council in 2013.

“It has taken considerable time to resolve some outstanding technical issues with council as United Energy is concerned with mounting any type of equipment on frangible electricity poles [which] are designed to collapse on impact, ab-sorbing the impact of a motor vehicle incident.

“United Energy and council agreed on two possible options at a meeting last Thursday 13 March, with council to evaluate and determine the approach forward.”

The $250,000 CCTV system, which requires all nine cameras to be installed before it can be switched on, has been funded by the state gov-ernment under its Community Crime Prevention Program.

Money for the cameras was announ ced by Hastings MP Neale Burgess in 2012. It was part of $2.4 million awarded to Victorian councils for CCTV systems and “other crime pre vention in-frastructure”.

“The crime prevention program is part of the Coalition government’s cam paign to make our streets safe again; other elements of the cam-paign include 1700 extra police on the street, 940 Protective Services Officers on train stations, and tougher sentencing for serious crimes,” Mr Bur-gess said at the time.

CCTV for Hastings was back on the public agenda last year in the wake of the stabbing death of jeweller Dermot O’Toole inside his High St shop on Friday 12 July.

A public meeting about safety was held last August not long after the attack.

After the meeting, Cr Garnock said the Hast-ings Community Alliance safety working group had long “pleaded” with the shire and other au-thorities to install CCTV cameras in High St.

He said the decision to install ca meras had been made before the stab bing of Mr O’Toole.

Cr Garnock said other topics on the safety group’s agenda included lobbying Metro Trains to improve lighting at railway stations on the Stony Point line; coordinating buses and trains; adopting Frankston Council’s anti-hoon policy, including dobbing in owners of illegal motor-bikes and hoon riders as well as destroying illegal motor cycles; and drawing up strategies to report dangerous dogs.

Last July, Western Port Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Lisa Dixon said traders had lobbied the state government and shire coun-cil for more CCTV cameras over the past two years because of a diminished police presence in Hastings.

By Chris BrennanMORNINGTON Peninsula Shire has launched a farm gate guide showing easily accessible sources of cheap and fresh produce to help com-bat growing food insecurity in the community.

The initiative comes in response to rising con-cern among social service providers and health professionals that an increasing number of fami-lies are being forced to go without basic necessi-ties including fresh food.

The shire is in the process of producing a food security booklet and strategy to better connect disadvantaged people to local produce.

The peninsula is well known for fresh produce, but a Victorian Population Health Survey found 8.7 per cent of residents experience food insecu-rity, compared to a state average of 5.6 per cent.

A number of social service providers on the peninsula have begun offering free fruit and vege tables to families in need while several “soup kitchens” providing free meals have sprung up.

Lisa Gray of the shire’s health and wellbeing team said the farm gate guide aimed to connect residents with local producers, community gar-dens and food security programs.

She said food security existed when “all people at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs as well as food preferences for an active and healthy life”.

“People who live with food insecurity are those who are restricted to easy access to affordable, healthy food and sometimes go without any food at all,” she said.

“The reasons behind this vary, but may include a lack of transport, high density of fast food res-taurants, low density of fresh food producers, and poor education about healthy food.”

The mayor, Cr Antonella Celi, said access to

“fresh, local, affordable food is essential to good health”.

“Food insecurity is an issue than can affect a range of people, for many reasons, and the shire is committed to working toward connecting local people to local food,” she said.

Cr Celi said the shire would continue to work with farmers, community groups, welfare organi-sations and community gardeners to ensure all resi dents could access fresh, healthy and afford-able food all year round.

ABOUT 100 peninsula residents on Sunday joined thousands across Australia protesting against a range of Abbott government policies. However, instead of taking to the streets, penin-sula people rallied on the sands of Safety Beach.

“March in March” protesters voiced anger over the government’s inaction on climate change, the treatment of asylum seekers, marriage equality, the tax system, and media ownership.

March in March organisers said many of the Abbott government’s policies were “against the common good of our nation”.

“We have no confidence in policies that go against common principles of humanity, decen-cy, fairness, social justice and equity, democratic governance, responsible global citizenship and conserving our natural heritage.”

The “movement” started late last year on so-cial media with the idea of marching on Parlia-ment House but grew into a nationwide protest.

THERE must be something in the water at Padua College’s three campuses that makes sporting champions.

In the case of Padua winning another Southern Independent Schools Interschool Swimming Championships, it’s the students in the water.

The swimming team, supported by the entire school community from campuses at Mornington, Rosebud and the new one at Tyabb, dared to dream of 25 wins in a row last week and achieved what could be an Australian record.

Led by veteran swimming coach Colin “Shuggy” Shugg, Padua scored 828 points to top the overall aggregate at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, easily accounting for second placegetter Woodleigh on 592 points with Flinders Christian Community College third on 581.

The college won in 1988, lost the next year and has now won for the past 25 years.

Padua won all three aggregate age shields (junior, intermediate and senior) as well as aggregate girls and boys shields – a clean sweep.

Principal Christopher Houlihan said Colin Shugg had led the team to all 25 victories, and congratulations were due to all swimmers, the coach, “our sports staff and all the families who helped get students to training and camp”.

“Colin once again dedicated many hours to train and prepare the team, and deserves the credit for this formidable run of victories,” he said.

a swimming camp at Lake Hume a week before the championships for more than 20 years.

“We have more than 60 students from years 7-11. It fosters great team camaraderie and may be a key ingredient to our ongoing success.”

Mr Di Paolo said Colin Shugg’s children attended the college and were members of the swimming team.

“Shuggy stayed on after his children finished school and is another key factor in our success.

“He’s also a pretty good open water swimmer.”

Swimming team members train two mornings a week at early morning pool sessions. The squad swimmers train up to five times each week.

Mr Di Paolo said Padua swimmers

from the early years were now in their late 40s. “They check the Padua Facebook page to see if their records have been broken!”

At the championships last Tuesday, Matthew Faoro (under-14 50-metres breaststroke) and Jessica Faoro (under-17 100-metres freestyle) set new records. (Faoro means “to make gold” in Italian.)

THIS is Seaford artist and satirist Tony Sowersby’s take on federal treasurer Joe Hockey’s pronouncement last month that it was the end of the “age of entitlement” in Australia.

Mr Hockey said “the age of personal responsibility” had begun and warned the nation the days of governments saving businesses and jobs was over after federal Cabinet rejected bailing out the SPC-Ardmona cannery owned by Coca-Cola Amatil.

Luckily for SPC, people rushed to the supermarket and started buying its goods, and a major supermarket chain has signed a big contract with the producer. The government later rejected bailing out carmakers.

Sowersby is best known for his pointed portraits for the Bald Archy Prize, the satirical portraiture contest that spoof the Archibald Prize each year.

Sowersby has won the People’s Choice award three times – in 1998, 2004 and 2005 with The

Cardinal with his Abbott, a portrait of Cardinal George Pell and now Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

The Bald Archy Prize was created in 1994 and attracts artists of all standards and styles. It encourages portraits ranging from hilarious to vulgar.

Winning subjects have included Kerry Packer, Amanda Vanstone, Edmund Capon, Shane Warne, Dame Edna Everage, John Howard and Pauline Hanson, Robbie and Gai Waterhouse, Rupert Murdoch, Jeff Kennett, and Ian Thorpe.

The comic portraits are shown in Canberra before being taken on tour in eastern Australia.

An art critic wrote last year: “The satirical side of this event has its basis in the irreverent, larrikin Australian comic comment, with great appeal to people from all walks of life, the reason why the exhibition of finalists keeps breaking attendance records wherever it is shown.”

FRANK Peniguel is out to set a record by travelling around Victoria playing bowls.

The 70-year-old, left, has given himself a year to play 600-900 games on different greens to join the holders of Guinness World Records.

Last week he was in Frankston and on the Mornington Penin-sula – Rosebud and Dromana on Tuesday, Mt Martha and Mornington on Wednesday, and Frankston South (Yamala Park) and Frankston on Thursday.

Peniguel joined Elsternwick Bowls Club in 2005 and left his Daylesford home in his Kombi van on 9 January to set a world record.

He will play 10 ends against one bowler from each of the clubs he visits.

Distance is the only thing keeping him away from the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

“It’s just too far between clubs and I need to play all games within one year,” Peniguel said on Wednesday after playing his 100th game at Dromana.

Taking to the road for record

YOUNG Mornington Peninsula athletes and sport teams are invited to apply for grants of up to $3000 to help cover the cost of competing in elite-level events.

The Local Sporting Champions grants program is designed to provide support for young people to participate in state, national and international sporting championships.

The federal government grants program, also open to coaches and officials, provides funding toward the cost of travel, accommodation, equipment and uniforms.

Grants of $500 are available for individuals and $3000 for teams.

Flinders MP Greg Hunt said the costs associated with competing at elite sporting events could be significant and the grants aimed to ease the financial burden and make it easier for young athletes to go further in their chosen sports.

Applicants must be between 12 and 18 in the year of the competition.

This funding round close June 30 and forms be received before the competition start date. Visit www.ausport.gov.au for more information.

Six athletes and two sporting clubs from the Flinders electorate have already received grants during the last round of the program, announced last month.

Individual recipients of $500 grants included: basketball players Tristan Lloyd, 15, of Cowes, and Tyson Carr, 12, of Pearcedale; cross-country runner Kayla Cheasley, 16, of Somerville; fencer Lily Baker, 12, of Mt Martha; softballer Chantelle Spencer, 18, of Pioneer Bay; and equestrian rider Stephanie Ivanovic, 12, of Moorooduc.

Peninsula sporting clubs awarded $3000 grants included Point Leo Surf Life Saving Club and the Victorian under-16 polocrosse team, which is based in Moorooduc.

Cr J. D. Grover (presi-dent of the Shire) presided, and spoke in glowing terms of their honoured guest, who was leaving Mornington to go into business with his brother, Mr Adam McLellan, M.L.A., of Melbourne. The Hon A. Downward, M.L.A., Mr W. S. Cook, Crs T. Male, A. E. Bates, and other prominent residents expressed regret in losing such a highly esteemed and popular citizen, and, as one speaker remarked, Mr McLellan was looked upon as the father of Mornington, for in sickness or in trouble his services were always sought and cheerfully given, and in every public movement, Mr McLellan was ever foremost.

***THE secretary of the Frankston fire brigade desires to acknowledge with thanks, donations of £6.3s from Sir John Madden, and £1 from Mr Plum-mer towards the funds of the brigade. The above gentlemen are highly pleased with the assistance rendered by the brigade during the recent fires.

***THE fifteenth half yearly meeting of the Langwarrin Progress Association was held in the vestry of the Method-ist church on Monday evening, March 9th. There was a fair attendance of members and the president Mr J. Archibald occupied the chair. The report for the half year was a very satisfactory one, and showed that good work had been carried out by the working bees, lectures had been arranged for and given by Mr Rinto-ral, the English poultry expert, on matters of great importance to poultry keepers, and by Mr C. D. Sampson, the American fruit packing expert, on the successful packing and marketing of fruit. A very enjoyable social was also tendered to Cr Lloyd to celebrate his return for the third time as the representative of this district in the Cranbourne shire council. Other mat-ters of importance to the district had also been attended to, and altogether the work carried out by the associa-tion showed that it was a valuable factor in the district. So much so that it was imperative that everyone in

the district should join and help on materially the good that was being done. Owing to four members having left the district, the membership had declined to that extent. The balance sheet showed that a good amount had

been expended for the term, leaving a small credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows:- Presi-dent, Mr J. Archibald. Vice president, Mr H. Oates. Hon. Secretary, Mr C. W. Murray. On the following evening, Monday, a very enjoyable concert was held, performers for which not only embraced local talent, but also 6 visitors from Melbourne, Frankston, and Cranbourne.

***IT is with much pleasure that I can now announce that the letter box at the Langwarrin Railway Station will shortly be cleared at 5.30 p.m. by the guard of the train running through Langwarrin to Melbourne at about that time. This will prove a great boom to all residents, thanks for which will be gratefully felt by the humble person, who contributes voluntarily most of the items of this districts news, and for which he sometimes receives more kicks than coppers.

***THE Somerville Show was formally

opened by Sir Frank Madden, who, while expressing the great pleasure it gave him to be present, said that he was amazed to see the improvement in the district.

There had been a marvellous development on the best lines, and Somerville had made its name known all over the world. There was more to be done, however, and he advised the younger fruitgrowers to find out every possible wrinkle regarding the grow-ing of fruit, the markets. etc., and told them not to stop till they were at the top. It gave him pleasure to declare the show open, and he wished it every success.

***ON Saturday next, the French Island Cricket Club will visit Tyabb, and try conclusions with the local team. The secretary would like as many of the local ladies who can attend in the afternoon, and kindly assist with the serving of afternoon tea.

It may interest a few of your readers to know that there were only two loads of metal put on one mile of this road during the past two years, which I think constitutes a record for a main road. A better system for the inspection of the roads ought to be made. I will readily offer my services to take the Councillors along this road in a cart, dray, or wagon, on a tour of inspection, but not in an automobile as it might strain its mechanism trying to force its way through the impassable wastes.

HISTORY

By Peter McCullough GEOFF Stockton, now 77, has lived in the Tyabb area all his life. He has recorded his recollections of growing up in Tyabb and these are recorded below.

***Part Five

Geoff’s recollections of growing up in Tyabb Family life: Geoffrey Alfred Stockton was born on 17th August, 1936 at the Hastings Bush Nursing Hospital. He was the eldest of three sons born to Alfred and Rosa (nee Dennett). Raymond, or “Joe” as he was always known, was the middle boy and Ken the youngest. The Stocktons were living on the family property in Graydens Road, part of which had been purchased by Geoff’s great, great aunt (Alice Leck) in 1892.

Geoff’s earliest memories are be-ing driven to Sunday School by his grandfather (Fred Stockton) in his Chev. “ute” as the only form of trans-port his parents had were pushbikes. One of Geoff’s first goals was to learn to ride a pushbike before he started school.

As a youngster Geoff would some-times be taken by his grandfather (“Pa Stocky”, as he affectionately called him) in the old spring cart with Rosie the horse harnessed in the shafts to have the horse shod at the blacksmith’s in Somerville. Navigat-ing the Jones Road hill which was unmade and full of potholes and rivulets from water running down the hill, would test “Pa’s” skills. By the time they arrived at the blacksmith’s, situated in Station Street opposite the railway station, both Geoff and his grandfather would be badly bruised in the hind quarters.

Rainwater was scarce in those days and had to be used carefully with five in the family. Every Saturday night Rosa lit the copper for the weekly family baths: the boys first and then their parents. The copper was situ-ated inside the house on a wooden floor which was covered with tin. Fortunately Rosa discovered that the wooden boards were being charred beneath the tin and consequently a wash house with a concrete floor was built to accommodate the copper. This meant that the water had to be brought into the house in buckets to fill the bath.

A daily task was separating the milk. Alf would milk the cow both morning and evening and bring the milk to the wash house where the separator was located. The broth-ers often argued over whose turn it was to do the separating as none of them liked having to do that chore. It required turning the handle so that the skim milk would come away; this was subsequently fed to the calf which was tethered well away from its mother. The cream was caught in a bowl and Geoff recalls his mother beating it with an old egg beater until it became thick enough to turn into curds for butter. Finally, using two wooden patties, it would be shaped into half pound blocks for the table.

With the cow supplying milk and butter, fowls providing eggs, and veg-etables from Alf’s garden, the family could readily “live off the land.”

To supplement the family income Alf would bundle up black wattle bark from the property. This would be stripped when the sap started flowing about October. It was dried, tied in bundles, and sent to Melbourne where it was used to tan cow hides. Another local use of the wattle bark was to put it in vats with fishing nets to stop the

salt from rotting them.Every Sunday morning the family

would attend church with grandpar-ents, Fred and Clara. Fred was the superintendant of the Holy Trinity Sunday School, a position he held for 50 years. Worship started at 11a.m. and before leaving Clara would put the roast in the Lux wood oven. When the family came home it would be ready and they would all sit down to Sunday “dinner.”For the evening meal the family visited Rosa’s family, the Dennetts. They always had lashings of scalded cream which was skimmed from the milk boiled on the stove; it would then be placed in the Coolgar-die safe on the south (cooler) side of the house.

At the front of the Dennett property was a small stall where the family had once sold their produce from the farm. After its closure Geoff and his broth-ers would pester their young aunts to open the stall; on the first occasion, to Geoff’s delight, he discovered some packets of chewing gum which were stale but edible. At Christmas time a huge tree was raised on the front verandah with the presents stacked under it.

Around Christmas time the church picnic was held at Mother’s Beach in Mornington; as well as participating in the usual games, Geoff was able to learn to swim. His father, Alf, showed him how to find periwinkles by feeling under the rocks when the tide was out. These were taken home in a bucket, Rosa would boil them up and the ed-ible parts would be extracted, dipped in vinegar and salt, and eaten.

Harley Unthank would take the chil-dren on these Sunday School picnics on the back of his truck. After one such picnic Harley dropped Geoff and his little brother (Joe) at the house in-stead of taking them into the church in Hastings. The boys broke in through a bedroom window and soon fell asleep.

The Stocktons – Pioneers of TyabbTheir parents, meanwhile, had gone to the church to pick them up but just missed Harley. They checked with Charlie Hodgins across the road and returned to their home in Graydens Road to ring the police. It was a great relief to find the boys fast asleep.

In Geoff’s younger days there was no electricity and the radio was pow-ered by a 6-volt battery. Alf had two of these and would take the flat one to the Tyabb Coolstore for recharging in the battery room. The radio enabled Geoff to listen to his favourite serials: Superman, Biggles, Dad and Dave, When a Girl Marries, and Yes What. However Geoff’s favourite was a weekly programme on nature by Crosbie Morrison. He would have a “bird of the week” on his show and, many years later, when Geoff had a radio show on 3RPP, he also had a “bird of the week.” Because of his in-terest his grandfather, Fred, gave him “What Bird is That?”as a Christmas present in 1945. It is one of Geoff’’s treasured possessions and is still put to good use.

After the war cars were scarce but Alf eventually bought a Buick which was a great luxury. After just one drive in it the car was taken to Bill Cushworth who lived around the corner in Boes Road. Bill was sup-plementing his income while waiting for his orchard to come into bearing. Being a mechanic, he cut off the back half of the car and replaced it with a tray which enabled Alf to cart his fruit to the Coolstore. At a later stage old army trucks became available and Alf purchased one of those to use instead of the cut-down Buick. School days: By the time he was 5 Geoff had mastered the art of bike riding and he pedalled daily to and from Hastings State School. During the war years an army training camp was located on the corner of Watts and Graydens Roads for soldiers learning about communications at

Balcombe; the activities at this loca-tion frequently delayed young Geoff as he pedalled past.

In those days a certain amount of sectarianism could be found just below the surface and on one occa-sion Geoff was caught up in a dispute between boys from the State school and boys from the Catholic school. Verbal abuse escalated to stone throwing and, when bending down to pick up his next piece of ammuni-tion, Geoff was hit on the back of the head. This resulted in a nasty cut and copious quantities of blood. Geoff pedalled home as fast as his little legs would carry him. Then came a visit to the doctor and a few stitches to bind the wound. Next day the boys at both schools were given a severe lecture, and a truce was declared between the warring camps.

A year or two later and Geoff thought smoking would be worth a try. His first attempt was using swamp gum bark which naturally curls up when used. After the first puff Geoff almost lost his tongue as, when he sucked on the bark, the red coals burst into flame. This early setback did not deter Geoff permanently and he took up smoking at the age of 17; in his early ‘20’s when they reached 7/6 a packet he gave them up for the last time.

Geoff was not the athletic type and his chances of being selected for the combined school sports were slim. However, to his surprise, he was selected in the tunnel ball team: on the big day the ball came down, hit Geoff’s leg, and sped away. The team came last and Geoff’s services were not called upon again.

A popular pursuit for the boys at Hastings primary was raft making which took place behind the school near the football ground. The fact that this area was “out of bounds” only made the activity more attractive. The raft was made out of old drums from the council tip located at the east end

of the football ground. This venture came to an end when one of the boys fell into the creek and appeared in the classroom after lunch in very wet clothes.

Joe Whitewick’s father had a boys’ club in an old shop where he taught boxing. One day Geoff and about four of his mates were on their way home when one boy said that Joe had shown him how a person would pass out if he breathed in deeply 15 times with his arms folded around his chest, while another person stood behind with his arms wrapped around and squeezed. Geoff didn’t like the sound of this but his friend, Max Kippe, laughed at the idea. He gave it a try but after the 15 breaths his eyes rolled back into his head and he slumped unconscious to the ground. This was too much for Geoff: thinking that Max was dead he quickly departed the scene and spent a sleepless night. Next day at school he was relieved to find that Max had returned from the dead, but it was an experience that Geoff never forgot.

Another “party trick” was per-formed by Billy Mayne: he would bring to school an old-fashioned hollow key tied to a piece of string half a metre long. With his group of spectators Billy would adjourn to the rear of the toilets where he would tie a 6 inch nail to the other end of the string, insert 3 matchheads and then the nail into the key hole. He would then swing the key so that the nail would hit the toilet wall very hard. The loud explosion would prompt any occupants of the toilet to vacate the premises at some speed.

Geoff’s schooldays were pleasant until Bert Collins arrived at Hast-ings to become Principal. He taught Grades 6, 7, and 8. The school had gardening on Friday afternoons and pruning fruit trees was part of the programme. As Geoff was taught to prune fruit trees at home, he was in his element. However Bert Collins told him that his pruning was wrong. Geoff’s attempt to explain that he knew something about pruning-he had learnt from his father and grandfather-led to trouble. On future Friday afternoons he was condemned to spend the time inside with the girls who were doing sewing. Geoff was required to do schoolwork; every now and again Collins would pass the classroom window, tap on the glass, and shout “Get your head down, Stockton.” This was his way of letting Geoff know that authority was not to

be challenged.Another problem for Geoff was that

he was never sure which hand was his right and which was his left. This came to a head one day during march-ing practice. Geoff was at the head of the column and when Collins shouted “Right wheel”, Geoff turned left. Collins grabbed him by the hair, gave him a shake, and shouted “Stockton. If you defy me again I will give you the strap.” A few minutes later he was back with the strap draped over his shoulder. By this time Geoff had the shakes: the music started, Collins shouted “Right wheel” and Geoff turned left. The result was two welts above Geoff’s knees which could still be seen three days later.

Every week the students went to Hastings Coolstore where they were taught apple packing. This was an activity in which Geoff was quite skilled and consequently in the schools’ apple packing competi-tion he won first prize at the Royal Melbourne Show: the prize was a blue ribbon and a 1st prize card. At the presentation night in the Hast-ings Hall at the end of the year Bert Collins gave Geoff his award but then took it back, saying that it remained the property of the school. Geoff only received the certificate when a teacher came across it when he was making preparations for the school’s cente-nary celebrations in the 1990’s.

During the war years the older boys at the school had to dig trenches on a Friday afternoon instead of garden-ing. These were for the children to lie in in the event of an air raid. On occasions there would be a rehearsal and the children would have to lie in the trenches; this was regarded as fun. Geoff vividly remembers being at school when the announcement came over the radio that the war had ended.

When Bert Collins left Hastings Geoff still had 6 months of schooling left. The new Principal was “Spud” Murphy who took a liking to Geoff and would send him into town on his bike when there was an errand to be run. Earlier on, in Grades 4 and 5, Geoff was taught by Mrs. Mirabella and Margaret Watt (Mrs. Forbes Gibson); to them he is indebted for some training in the 3Rs although his arithmetic was the best of the three.Teen years: Geoff looked forward to going to the movies in the Hastings hall on Saturday nights when, at in-terval, the young people would sprint down to Mary Read’s shop near the swimming pool. A strawberry spider

was Geoff’s fancy, and his other recollection is of Fats Waller singing “Goodnight Sweetheart” at the end of “the pictures.”

In Geoff’s teen years square danc-ing was all the go in Hastings, Tyabb and Somerville. Geoff’s first lessons were for beginners in the supper room of the Hastings hall. He gradually progressed to the senior hall but then his old left/right problem re-occurred. Geoff was sent back to the beginners for another 3 or 4 months of back-wards and forwards. His childhood problem was only overcome when he was given a watch for his 18th birthday; it resided on his left wrist! Once he gained his confidence Geoff attended many other square dancing venues, including Leggatt’s Ballroom in the city. The caller there was Jim Vickers-Willis who was very well known at the time.

On one occasion during Geoff’s teenage years the Stockton family headed off on a holiday to Cowes on Phillip Island. Their holiday home was the International truck with a tarpaulin over it. However a severe storm flooded the whole area and Geoff’s mother opted for going home; she was not an enthusiastic holiday maker at the best of times.

At 18 years of age Geoff was called up to do National Service Training at Puckapunyal. Because the army had

so many potential trainees it was de-cided to defer those who lived more than 25 miles from a drill hall; Geoff was pleased to be deferred as all he wanted to do was work on the orchard and go rabbiting with his ferrets at weekends.

Rabbiting always kept the boys occupied. When the burrows were washed out after heavy rain, the rabbits sat under tussocks. The boys would hit the rabbits on the head with a shovel but this bruised the rabbits and they were not much good for eating. Therefore another method had to be devised. One of the boys would spot a rabbit under a tussock, signal to his brother who would come up from behind and jump on the unsuspecting rabbit. This avoided any bruising.

As Geoff grew older he would drive the tractor to his uncle Fred Dennett’s property in Wellington Road, Somerville and the two of them would go ferreting. They had two ferrets and nets as well as their dogs which would chase the rabbits out of their seats into the burrows. Their best weekend catch was 70 rabbits, although it was normally 35-40. Geoff would skin the rabbits on Saturday evening and on Sunday afternoon he would sell them from a stall on the Frankston-Flinders Road. The price was 5 shillings which rose to 7/6 before the myxamatosis virus

put an end to rabbiting as a source of income. The skins were hung up on wires to dry, then sent to Melbourne by train but not much money was made out of them.

Foxhunts were held regularly. Geoff was the organiser of the “Kid Beaters” who would make a huge noise beating tins full of stones. The Judd and Dennett boys were part of Geoff’s group. The hunters would wait at the clearings for the foxes to come out. The council paid a bounty of 7/6 for each scalp. Later the fox-hunts became bigger with more men involved. The group’s biggest tally was 9 at the Brockhoff property on Old Moorooduc Road.Working life: When Geoff left school to work on the orchard his father, Alf, bought a Gibson tractor. This was in accordance with Alf’s general phi-losophy that you bought the cheapest, whether it was any good or not. Geoff thought the Gibson tractor was one of the biggest man-killers of all time. It had no steering wheel and only one lever that in rough ground almost tore the driver’s arms from their sockets. It was so small that the back wheels had no traction if the ground was at all wet. It was very difficult to get through rough ground. To drive it was a nightmare; to Alf it was a tractor. According to Geoff the next tractor his father bought was not much bet

ter; instead of a Ferguson he chose a Ford Dexter. Again it was the money which influ-enced Alf.

Another of Alf’s economy buys was a Hill-man strip plough instead of a petty plough. Lots of time and money was spent as the bolt that held the disc to the plough arm kept snapping. Alf eventually conceded defeat and bought a second-hand petty plough.

Geoff’s pay working on the orchard was 8 pounds a week, plus board. He would work hard on the pruning in the winter so that he could spend the last few weeks of the season pruning for neighbour Charlie Hodgins. For this he received 7/6 an hour. He also helped Charlie cut down large trees in the bush back paddock using an axe; this was firewood for the winter. “Stripping out” was another job to be done on an orchard and Geoff did this task for Ron Benton, Charlie Hodgins, Fred Renouf and the Greive brothers. The stripping was done with one person driving the tractor and the other working the petty plough. The

plough went in and out between the trees and was steered by two levers attached to the front and rear wheels; this removed the weeds between the trees.

After getting his licence Geoff delivered fruit to the Melbourne market for Graham Cooke on Sunday afternoons. It was not a pleasant drive: negotiating St. Kilda junction was a nightmare and driving a truck with bad brakes up the William Street hill was nerve wracking, particularly at the lights.

During the hay season Geoff worked for Stan Norton and Bert Murray raking hay on farms between Cranbourne and Balnarring.

By Stuart McCulloughART-ROCK ensemble R.E.M. once opined: “That’s me in the corner.” When it comes to attending live music events, not only am I invariably in the corner, but way up the back, wedged against a vending machine and stuck behind someone who’s much taller.

Live music is a wonderful thing, but sometimes the idea of seeing a band live doesn’t quite match the actual experience. That’s because seeing a band is an exercise in faith. You go in the hope that it might be an exhilarat-ing, life-changing experience. Mostly though, it’s a really late night from which it takes you the rest of the week to recover.

I was in a band before I really started seeing them. At thirteen, I played synthesiser with some older people. It sounds incredibly cool but, in truth, I was terrified of playing a dud note. Not long after, I was in a band with kids my own age including my younger brother.

One of our earliest gigs was support-ing a band called The Switch. They were older and American and we were awestruck. To them, we would have looked like we’d just finished work at Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

Somewhere, I have a tape of that apocryphal performance. It’s just a couple of minutes but, believe me, it’s more than enough. The song in question begins with an atmospheric synthesiser overture before – gulp – a spoken word introduction.

It gets worse. Whilst the first part of the song is

performed in near darkness, when the band kicks in, the guy at the desk wakes up and we are bathed in light.

It’s at that moment that we begin our synchronised dance moves. Had I been in the audience rather than on the stage, I doubt very much that I would have complained about being in the back corner with my view obstructed. I would have been grateful.

There are certain rules when it comes to seeing a band. Firstly, wher-

ever you stand is a thoroughfare. Peo-ple will push in front, behind and side on as they seek to get from A to Z and all points of the alphabet in between.

Secondly, all attendees at a concert have a duty to try to prevent some-one’s drink from being spilled. Not just your own. Holding a drink that’s lapping at the brim creates an auto-

matic right of way. The third rule is that, no matter how

tall you are, someone taller will stand in front of you. You could be as tall as Chinese basketball giant Yao Ming and drop in to catch a set by your favourite band and still end up with someone obstructing your view.

For some reason, I always have a lousy view when I go to see bands. Even if I arrive early and use fluo-rescent traffic cones to cordon off a space that’s stage centre, I invariably find myself shuffled like a dud card to somewhere down the back of the venue. Although I’m always pressed up against the emergency exit, I have a friend who has an uncanny gift to find her way to the very front no matter how crowded.

We once arrived at Festival Hall to find it stuffed like a cocktail olive. Within seconds, she had vanished into the crowd, weaving her way towards the front. My brother and I remained where we were. For some reason, the crowd seemed unwilling to let us pass and resented our attempts to do so. Perhaps they thought we were pushing in. Maybe they had seen the video of us supporting The Switch and wanted to teach us a lesson. Either way, they had a point.

There’s a band I like called The National. They play a literate brand of baritone art rock that appeals to me greatly. That the band members are all my age probably helps. It is music for the head, as well as the heart.

When they announced they were touring Melbourne, our friend Dr J got tickets. When we arrived at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, I immediately

headed for my usual position along the back fence behind the recycling bins. However, it seems Dr J had managed to secure tickets in row ‘N’, right smack-bang in the middle. I could see the stage. I could even see the people on the stage. It was an experience that was so strange, so novel that I barely knew what to do with myself.

After two hours of exhilarating music, all of which I saw as well as heard, the concert reached something of a crescendo. It was then that lead singer, Matt Berninger, threw himself into the audience and, with micro-phone in hand, began making his way through the crowd. As the song went on he drew ever closer until he began to stroll down row ‘N’ in our direction.

The people to my left celebrated by groping him, filming the assault on a mobile phone. As he squeezed past me, I applied ‘public toilet rules’ in which I did everything humanly pos-sible to avoid actual physical contact. Matt Berninger, obviously apprecia-tive of my efforts not manhandle him, looked up. Not only were we the same age, but the same height also, both with a beard and glasses, except Matt Berninger looked every inch the rock star and I looked like I’d just been to Bunnings.

In a strange way, it was like looking at a novelty mirror.

Whether it was glimpse of the road less travelled or just a great night out matters little. I’m just grateful that there are people not unlike me who are making great music. And that I ever got close enough to realise it for myself.

PROVINCIALBy IT GullyMORNINGTON was in the box seat to turn years’ of disappointment into a year of great achievement in the MPCA Provincial grand final.

The Doggies have been the most consistent side in the competition this season and went into the match against Sorrento as favourite.

Meanwhile, the Sharks were looking to make amends for their poor showing against Peninsula Old Boys the season before in the big dance.

In that match against the Old Boys,

the Sharks were bowled out for 133 chasing 197.

History seemed to set to repeat itself on the first day of the 2013/14 grand final, with Sorrento up against it at 8/120 off 56 overs before rain put a stop to the day’s play.

The Sharks’ only source of hope could be to draw on last year’s final when they had POB reeling at 8/123 before the Old boy’s Trevor Johnson went on to make 59 to help his side to 197 and victory.

On Saturday, the Sharks won the toss and elected to bat.

Despite heavy rain prior to the match at Dromana Reserve, the ground was playing well but was still slippery under foot.

Luke Popov and Michael Heib took the new ball for the Dogs and were right on target early.

Nick Jewell opened the batting with Jedd Falck and while Falck was scratchy, Jewell belted a short Heib ball to the boundary with a classic pull shot off the first delivery he faced.

The Mornington fieldsmen were up and about and their efforts in the field were first class, a number of cracking

Jewell shots stopped without a run being made.

Both Popov and Heib were swinging the ball away from the left-handed Falck and into Jewell.

Sorrento quickly fell to 2/22 after Popov got rid of Falck and Heib knocked over Liam O’Connor before he could add to the scoreboard.

Mornington skipper Matt Foon then rattled the pegs of Jewell with his second delivery of the day, and when Leigh Poholke became Popov’s second victim after a blinding one-handed catch at fine gully, the Sharks were

reeling at 4/30 from just 13 overs.Anthony Blackwell, who averages

just eight in finals, needed a big score to get his side back in the contest. He top scored with 26 but that wasn’t enough. Chris King contributed 17.

At the end of play, Nick Davern was unbeaten on 23, with AJ King at the other end. AJ’s highest score this season was seven. Davern has already passed his highest score of 16, which happened to be against Mornington in round seven.

Popov finished day one with 3/27, while Foon finished with 3/28.

Doggies dance over Sharks

DISTRICTBy IT GullyA MAGNIFICENT spell of fast bowling from Pines opening quick Brett Remy placed his side in the box seat to win the MPCA District flag.

In front of a massive crowd at Mornington’s Alexandra Park, Pines rolled Delacombe Park for just 94 in 52.5 overs on Saturday, before finishing the afternoon themselves on 0/37.

The evergreen Remy, who seems to threaten retirement every season, bowled 21 overs against Delacombe Park.

Remy finished with the more than tidy figures of 5/33, including 10 maidens.

When he took his fifth wicket, his figures were 5/11 from 14 overs.

The Parkers were never in the contest, losing wickets at quick intervals.

Jon Gurthrie was rolled for a duck by Nick Wilcox after facing 20 balls and, although Nick Christides’ first two scoring shots found the boundary, he was rolled for 13.

After eight overs, Delacombe Park was 2/13. They then struggled to 5/42 from 28 overs.

Joel Malcolm scored 13, Chris Brittain seven, Simon Dignan eight and Andrew Christides was out for a duck.

Ben Brittain (13) and Shane Deal offered a little bit of resistance in the middle order, taking the score from 6/43 in the 30th over to 6/70 at tea. Brett Chard made a handy 17 at the end, while Varun Singh scored nine, but it wasn’t enough to push the score beyond 100.

Chasing just 95 for victory, Pines resumed on day two at 0/37, Remy unbeaten on 21 and Rhys Chalkley on 16 not out.

Going into the grand final against Rosebud as hot favourites, the Hillmen had to put seasons of failed attempts behind them to place themselves in a position to taste the ultimate reward.

The Hillmen have lost their past two grand finals against Pines and Seaford Tigers. And despite rain interruptions throughout the day’s play, the Hillmen were able to set-up their win with a sensational opening day of batting.

After winning the toss and batting at Pearcedale Reserve, the Hillmen got away to a flier, with openers Andrew Mock and Ken Sullivan putting on 84.

Sullivan was the attacking batsman in the opening stand and lost his wicket a short time after Mock (25) for 51. That brought Rheede Hopgood and Simon Dart to the crease together within a short space of time.

Hopgood was the aggressor in that partnership and with Dart, helped take the score from 2/84 to 181 before he was tragically run out for 64. Riley Shaw (six) and Brent Martin (five) didn’t hang around long and at the close of play on Saturday afternoon, the Hillmen were in the box seat at 5/216.

With Dart unbeaten on 49 and with Lincoln Toy (two not out) and Andrew Brown and Jamie McCall still to come, the Hillmen are well set up to push 250-plus.

In anyone’s language, it’s not often a side that scores over 250 in a grand final lose. The Hillmen scored 197 in the grand final last season against Seaford Tigers (7/296), while the year before, the Hillmen were rolled for 99, chasing Pines’ 281. History says Red Hill was in a terrific position on Saturday night.

Jason Nagel was the pick of the Rosebud bowlers after the first day with 2/61 from 26 overs. Darren Kerr and Peter Doughty were the other wicket takers.

By IT GullyMORNINGTON run machine Ben Clements was crowned with the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association’s highest honour last week when he won the W B Wedgewood Medal.

Clements (17 votes) polled in seven of the 11 games this season, finishing three votes clear of two all-rounders, Long Island’s Scott Phillips and Baxter’s Dale Irving, as well as Sorrento skipper Nick Jewell, who all finished on 14 votes.

Crib Point’s Luke Herrington was a further vote back on 13.

Clements scored 1185 runs this season, 806 of them coming in 13 innings in home-and-away matches.

This gave him an average of 62 for the season, with a high score of 129 against Mt Eliza in round 3 (he also scored 126 against Heatherhill in round nine).

Clements’ lowest score for the season was five against Long Island. He scored 40 in the second innings of that match.

Clements also scored plenty of runs in the Jack Peacock Cup, including knocks of 99, 70, 84 and 118.District

In District ranks, Delacombe Park teammates Chris Brittain and Jon Guthrie drove each other to the line in a tight and tense medal count. But the skipper, Brittain, finally nudged out the opening batsman to win the E G Betts Medal.

Brittain polled in six games to give him 15 votes while Guthrie was just one vote back after polling in five matches.

Seaford star Damien Lawrence was third in the count on 13 votes while Shaun Foster (Carrum) and Corey Hand (Seaford Tigers) both polled 12 votes.

Brittain scored 407 runs this season with a highest score of 104 against Baden Powell in Round nine. His batting average was 36.45. He also snared 39 wickets at an average of 9.10. His best bowling figures were 6/36 against Hastings in Round four. Sub DistrictIn the Subbies, Red Hill star Simon Dart was a raging-hot favourite for the Robert Thompson Award and won it with 14 votes.Dart tipped out Dromana’s Danny Timmer and Balnarring’s Mark Walles, who both polled 11 votes.

Rosebud’s Jason Nagel, along with Paul Bradley (YCW), Glenn Collett (Red Hill), Jacob Cook (Balnarring) and Shayne Gillings (Pearcedale) all polled 10 votes.Dart scored 608 runs this season and picked-up 12 wickets.He scored his first century (111) of the season in the final home-and-away game against YCW. He then backed it up with 135 in the semi-final. He averaged 67.44 for the season.His best bowling was against Dromana in round one when he snared 5/11 from eight overs but he didn’t bowl beyond round eight.

FOOTBALLBy Toe PuntWITH only a couple of weeks before the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League season opens, there are still plenty of player movements.Pearcedale will be devastated that both Rohan Hensby and Chris Swan have applied for clearances to head to the Goulburn Valley League.

Hensby and Swan arrived from Tasmania a few years ago and have been sensational additions to the Panthers.

The defender and midfielder will be big losses and come on the back of the loss of underrated Glenn Anderson, who is heading to the Ellinbank League.

Nick Watersone is the latest player

to want out of Tyabb after applying for a clearance to Bonbeach, while Warren Hubbard also wants out.

Red Hill has picked up promising former Mornington player Rhys McConville-Brain.

Darren Booth has finally applied for a clearance from Rye to head back to Mt Eliza.

The Demons knew at the end of last season that the star defender would be heading home.

Hastings meanwhile has picked up Jarryd Elton from Tooradin. The Blues have also snared Karingal speedster Dale Alainis, a very dangerous small forward. From all reports, the Blues’ practice-match form has been superb.

Meanwhile, there’s been talk for a few years about when Seaford gun Brayden Irving would join his

brothers at Frankston to play VFL.He has made the move this year,

coming as a major blow for the Tigers.Bonbeach is adding some depth,

none bigger than former Melbourne and Brisbane Lion player Travis Johnstone.

Harley Ambrose is the latest player to want out of Karingal, joining the likes of Sam McGarry, Chris Hay, Brendan Dunne, David and Tim Hirst, Callan Dixon, Stephen Charalambous, Daniel Noble, Dale Alainis, Jared Eames, Ryan Jenke, Jack Johnson, Kane McKenzie, Anthony Joel and James Tyquin.

Finally, clever and talented Mornington forward/midfielder James Cameron is going to try his luck in the VFL.

Tootgarook won the toss and chose to bat first. Opening bowlers Craig McNamara and Luke Gibbons began their spells well, bowling with control and continually beating the edge of the Toot bats.

Gibbons bowled a ripper to knock off stump over and remove the first wicket at 13. McNamara then claimed his first wicket in his 6th over, 2/33 which very quickly became 4/37 with Gibbons bowling the captain for a duck.

McNamara then had Toot’s best batter brilliantly caught by Scott Williams at slip. The next pair steadied things before

Gibbons trapped the second opener in front for 20.

Tootgarook’s next pair batted 10 overs, taking the score to 82 before Gibbons struck again. In his 20th over straight he claimed his 5th wicket and Toot was in trouble at 7/95. Eight balls later Gibbons struck again and it was 8/101. From this point onward the momentum shifted Toot’s way as the last two partnerships weathered the storm, batting 27 overs and scoring what would end up being a match-winning 50 extra runs as Toot was bowled out in the 70th over for 151.

The three main bowlers used were brilliant with Gibbons claiming 7/72 off 26.3 overs with 7 maidens. McNamara was excellent at the other end taking 3/30 off 16 tidy overs while Steven Robb kept the pressure on and finished

with 0/27 off 15 overs. The team fielded well and helped keep Toot’s much-vaunted batting line-up to only 151, an excellent effort. Hastings’ openers then had 5 overs to face in the rain, which turned out to be only two balls as the heavens opened for some much-needed rain. Starting 10 minutes early on Sunday, openers Williams and Lachie Trench made a positive start before both were dismissed with the score on 17. Aaron Gregory and Chris Helweg then looked to steady things but Helweg was out caught behind for a duck, and it was 3/27.

Worse was to follow as Gregory smashed a ball that went for four but was amazingly given out lbw, 4/34. Captain Jason Slocombe then looked to assert his authority with some classic drives, but lost partners McNamara for

7, Robb for 4 on a contentious, over the waist no-ball, and Bradshaw for 1 and it was 7/70 in the 31st over.

Disaster then struck when Slocombe played one onto his stumps on 25. Gibbons hit a four but was out next ball, 9/74. The last pair of Justin Norton (20no) and Steve Thomson (7) gave the crowd some hope for a while, adding 36 to get the score to 110 before Thomson holed out and it was game over, Tootgarook the premiers.Well done to the Tooters; they played better, sustained cricket for the whole game.

Man of the match: Luke Gibbons. Also, congratulations to Luke and his partner Rebecca who are getting married on Saturday.

The entry fee for the Dog High Scramble is $2 per dog, $2.20 all senior classes for flowers (junior classes $1.10), fruit all classes $2.20, $4 per rat (or $2 per rat for Australian Rat Fanciers Society members), vegetables classes $2.20 adult classes, $1.10 junior classes.

No late entries can be accepted, so please ensure that entry forms are submitted before the closing dates.
