Save the dates—

Allison Hinman, our summer intern, describes how 17 Madison Street inspires her:

“As a museum studies student there have been many class discussions about how museums

must serve their community and be accessible. After the first week of my internship I

understood how dedicated the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House is to its community. I have had the privilege of observing a number of different programs and have

seen a direct connection to the museum’s mission and Miss Anthony’s values. This entire

summer has been an amazing experience. It has changed the way I think about

programming and how I will engage with my community in the future.”

I hope everyone had an opportunity to attend the Susan B. Anthony Festival

celebrating the 19th Amendment on Sunday August 17! It was such a beautiful and

fun filled day! Hope you enjoy the pictures below!

Now it’s the middle of September and Fall is just a few days away! There are so many

exciting events on our calendar! The Monday Lecture Series is starting September 29

and is nearly sold out! The following MLS is on October 20 with a few tickets remaining!

The Friends of the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House are well into planning their Fall Tea

featuring Teagan Ward. I hope to see many of you on Sunday, October 26 at Locust

Don’t be fooled by her small stature; this lady can match and exceed the vocal talents

What’s New at the Anthony House:

A recently acquired 1898 oil painting

The recently acquired 1898 oil painting by Eliza Bowden Anthony, now hangs

in the dining room of the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House. The

artist, Eliza A. Bowden Anthony, (1834-1905), was married to Benjamin

Anthony (1829-1899), a cousin of Susan B. Anthony.

Eliza was an amateur artist who lived in eastern Massachusetts. The painting is

of a sleigh drawn by one horse on a snow covered country road about to go over a small bridge. In the background are trees and the shadows of the

village houses. It is in a gold frame that compliments the picture and is

appropriate for the period (1900) of our dining room.

The painting is a gift of Dr. Elizabeth H. Fulmer, a 4th cousin of Susan B.

Anthony, 4th generation removed. It has been in their family since it was

painted in 1898 but Dr. Fulmer wanted the painting to come to the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House because

of the family connection and information passed down from her great grandmother Harriet Allen Anthony Houghton

about their connection to Miss Anthony.

The 94th anniversary of the Nineteenth

Amendment took place on August 17, 2014 from noon to 5 p.m. in the park between Madison and King streets and

in the Anthony House. There was live music and entertainment by local artists, including 6-time Grammy nominee and featured performer at our 2013 Fall

Tea, Chet Catallo & the Cats! Visitors took part in free walking tours of the Historic Preservation District and tours

of the Anthony House at a discounted cost. As always, members received complimentary admission.
