• TostrengthenoneselfforthepurposeofworshippingAllahandtobe

rewardedforeatinganddrinking.

• PermissibleactthenbecomesanactofworshipthatisrewardedbyAllahduetothegoodintention.

• OntheauthorityofAbuHurairah(radiAllaahu'anhu)whosaid:The

MessengerofAllaah(sallAllaahualayhiwasallam)said:

AllaahtheAlmightyisGoodandacceptsonlythatwhichis good.AndverilyAllaahhascommandedtheBelieverstodothatwhichHehascommandedtheMessengers.

SotheAlmightyhassaid:"O(you)Messengers!EatoftheTayyibaat[allkindsofHalaal(legal)foods],andperform

righteousdeeds."[23:51]

andtheAlmightyhassaid:"Oyouwhobelieve!Eatofthe

lawfulthingsthatWehaveprovidedyou"[2:172]

Thenhementioned[thecase]ofamanwho,having

journeyedfar,isdisheveledanddusty,andwhospreadsout

hishandstotheskysaying"OLord!OLord!",whilehisfoodisHaraam(unlawful),hisdrinkisHaraam,hisclothingis

Haraam,andhehasbeennourishedwithHaraam,sohow

can[hissupplication]beanswered?![CollectedbyMuslim]

• Thecommandwasthesameforthebelievers.o Messengers&Believerscommandedtoeatthatwhichisgood.o Believersarealsocommanded.Commandedtodoandabstain.

Thenhementioned[thecase]ofamanwho,havingjourneyedfar,is

disheveledanddusty,andwhospreadsouthishandstotheskysaying"O

Lord!OLord!",whilehisfoodisHaraam(unlawful),hisdrinkisHaraam,his

clothingisHaraam,andhehasbeennourishedwithHaraam,sohowcan[his

supplication]beanswered?!

• Somuchbenefitwecangetfromthispartofthehadeeth.• Showsusthecausesforthedu’atobeaccepted.

• AlsothiswasthewayoftheProphet(peacebeuponhim)–giveanexampleemphasizethepoint.

• ExampleofaMuslimwhoisinneedofAllah.• “PayheedtothissimilitudeasyoumightfindyourselfinneedofAllah

andyourcasemaybethesameasthisman.”

ThreesupplicationswillnotberejectedbyAllahthe

Salmanal-FarsinarratedthattheProphet(sallAllaahualayhiwasalam)said:

'Indeed,AllahisShyandBeneficent.HisisShywhenHis

servantraiseshishandstoHim(inadu'a)toreturnthemempty,disappointed!'[Ahmad]

saying"OLord!OLord!",

• "OhmyLord"invokingAllahoftheattributeRuboobiyah.o Theonewhobelongsthekingdomandrunningofalltheaffairs.

o Ameansofdu'abeinganswered.o BeliefinAllahandcallinguponhimbythebeautifulnames.–

• Meaningitisveryunlikelytheonewhoeatsdrinks,clothes,nourishes(earning)haraamthattheirdu’amaybeanswered-eventhoughhemay

bedoingsomeofthemeansbywhichthedu’aisanswered.

• Awarningfromeatingunlawfulfood,drink,andclothing.

Furtheretiquettesbeforeeating

Washinghandsbeforeeating,ensuringhandsareclean.

• Muslimshouldalwaysbeconcernedwiththeirpersonalhygiene

Placefoodonaspreadonthefloor

• Thismakestheactmoremodest.

• Anassaid:

“Allahsmessenger(peacebeuponhim)didnoteatupona

tableorfromaplatter.(Al-Bukhari)

• Question:Doesthatmeansittingfromatableisharaam?• "InsuchmattersitisnotobligatoryfortheMuslimtofollowtheexample

oftheProphet(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim),buthemay

Oneshouldsittoeatinamodestfashion.

• Restonone’skneesandsitwithtopofontheground(andhisbodyrestingonthebottomofhisfeet).

• Orputhisrightlegerectandsituponhisleftleg,asinthemannerthatAllah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)wouldsit.

• Notfrometiquettetorecline,asAllah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)said:

"Idonoteatwhilereclining.Instead,Iamaservant,soIeat

likeaservanteatsandIsitlikeaservantsits.(Al-Bukhari)

Besatisfiedbythefoodthatispresentedinfrontofyouranddonotfind

faultwithit.

• Ifhelikesit,heshouldeatit.Ifhedoesnotlikeit,heshouldleaveit.• BasedonthestatementofAbuHurayrah:

“Allah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)|neverfoundfaultwithanyfood.Ifhedesiredit,hewouldeatit.Ifhedisliked

it,hewouldleaveit."(Al-Bukhari)

Basedonthehadith:

“Whenoneofyoueatssomefood,lethimsayBismillah,andifheforgetstodosoatthebeginning,lethimsay

Bismillahfiawwalihiwaaakhirihi(InthenameofAllahat

thebeginningandend).

Question:DowesayBismillahorBismillahir-Rahmaanir-Raheembeforeeating?

• Differenceinopinionbetweenthescholar• Mostofthescholarssaythereisnothingwrongwiththisaddition.

• Shaykhal-IslamIbnTaymiyah(mayAllahhavemercyonhim)said:Ifonesayswheneating,Bismillahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem,thatisgoodand

moreperfect.(al-Fataawaal-Kubra,5/480)

• An-Nawawi(mayAllahhavemercyonhim)said:Itismoreimportantto

notethephrasetobeusedwhenmentioningthenameofAllah.…ThebestistosayBismillahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem,butifonesaysBismillah,

thatissufficientandfulfilstheSunnah.(al-Adhkaar,1/231)

• Al-HaafizibnHajar(mayAllahhavemercyonhim):Ihavenotseenanyparticularevidencetosupportwhatheclaimsaboutitbeingbetter.

(Fathal-Baari.)

• Conclusion:itisbettertolimitittosayingBismillahwhenstartingtoeat,

andnotaddanythingtoit.ButifonedoesaddtoitbysayingBismillahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem,thereisnothingwrongwiththataccordingtothe

majorityofscholars.

Eatwiththerighthand,smallportionsandchewthemwell.

• ItwasnarratedfromIbn‘Umar(mayAllaahbepleasedwithhim)thattheProphet(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim)said:

“Nooneamongyoushouldeatwithhislefthand,ordrinkwithit,fortheShaytaaneatswithhislefthandanddrinks

withit.”(NarratedbyMuslim,2020).

Eatwhatiscloseanddonottakefromthemiddleoftheplate:

• Nottoreachoutorontheothersideoftheplate

• Allah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)toldUmaribnAliSalamah:

"Oyoungman,mentiontheNameofAllah,eatwithyourrighthand

andeatfromwhatisclosetoyou.(Al-BukhariandMuslim)

• Allah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)alsosaid:

"Theblessingsdescendfromthemiddleofthefood.Soeat fromtheedgesanddonoteatfromthemiddled"(At-

Tirmithi)

Ifapersondropssomefood,heshouldremovethedirtfromitandeatit.

• Allah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)stated:

"Ifamorseloffoodfallsfromanyofyou,heshouldtakeitandwipeitcleanofanydirtandtheneatit.Heshouldnot

leaveitfortheShaytan."(Muslim)

Notblowdirectlyoverhotfood

• Shouldwaituntilitcoolsdown.

• Shouldnotblowintoaglassofwaterwhiledrinkingfromit.o Instead,heshouldbreathethreetimesoutsideofthevessel.Anas

narratedthatAllah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim),would

breathethreetimeswhiledrinking.(Al-BukhariandMuslim)o AbuSa'idnarratedthatAllah'sMessenger(SAW)forbadeblowing

intoadrink.(Al-BukhariandMuslim)o Ibn'AbbasnarratedthatAllah'sMessenger(SAW)forbade

breathingintoadrinkingvesselorblowingintoit.(At-Tirmithi)

Avoideatingtohisfillorovereating.

• Agoldenrulewhenitcomestoeatinganddrinking!

• Allah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)said:

"Ahumandoesnotfillanycontainerworsethanhis stomach.Itisenoughforahumantohavesomemorselsto

strengthenhisback(keephisbackstraight).Ifhemusteatmore,thenitshouldbeone-thirdofhisstomachforfood,

one-thirdfordrinkandone-thirdforbreathing."(Ahmad)

Don’tburdenyourguestbyforcingthemtoeat,saying,“Eat!Eat!”

• Instead,heshouldeatwhatheneedstoeatwithoutshynessortryingtobeshy.Inthatcase,hetroubleshiscompanionorguestanditmayalsobe

atypeofactingforshow,whichisforbidden.

Otheretiquetteswhileeating

ShaykhJaza’iry:Heshouldnotdoanythingthattheothersgenerallyconsider

grossbehavior.Heshouldnotshakehishandoffovertheplate.Healsoshouldnotputhisheadclosetothefoodsuchthatifsomethingfallsfromhismouth,it

willlandinthepeople'sfood.Similarly,ifhebitoffapartofhisbread,heshould

notputtherestofthatbreadbackintothefood.Healsoshouldnotdiscussdisgustingthingswhileeating.Inthatway,hemightharmoneofhiscompanions

anditisforbiddentoharmaMuslim.

Licktheplateandfingerscleanbeforewipingwithnapkinorwashingthem.

• ThisisbasedontheProphet'sstatement:

"Whenoneofyoueats,heshouldnotwipehisfingersuntilhelicksthemorhasthemlicked."(Al-BukhariandMuslim)

(NOTE:Referstohavingyourfingerslickedbyyourspouse)

• JabirstatedthatAllah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)orderedthe

fingersandplatesbelickedclean.Healsosaid:

"Youdonotknowinwhichpartofyourfoodliesits

blessing."(Muslim)

PraiseAllahaftereatingAllah'sMessenger(peacebeuponhim)said:

"Ifapersoneatsanyfoodandthensays,'PraiseistoAllahwhofedmethisandprovidedformewithoutanystrength

orpoweronmypart,'allofhisprevioussinswillbe forgiven."(At-Tirmithi)
