Dear Friends: We are in the midst of studying the book, “The 7 habits of Jesus.” The book is not so much about the habits of Jesus, but what habits we, as followers of Jesus, need to develop in our lives to live

as children of God in the world. The reality is: we are all creatures of habit. We have daily rouDnes, we have paEerns of how we spend our money, how we spend our leisure Dme, and how we order our lives. We all have habits. They key to a happy life is developing good habits. Some of those habits go back to our upbringing. As a child I was always made to say please and thank you whenever I had a request or I received a giJ. It was drilled into me as a habit. Now, it is just a natural way of interacDng with people. It is a good habit. Some people have developed the habit of arriving early, while some people are always late. Some people make it a habit of saving their money and others make it a habit to spend whatever they have. For good or bad, we all have clearly established habits. But… We are able to change our habits if we make a conscious effort to do so. For years I had the habit of starDng my mornings with a cup (or two or 3) of coffee. During lent I gave up coffee, and instead started each morning drinking 32 ounces of water. I am making a conscious effort to develop a new habit. I discovered that caffeine elevated my blood pressure, and I am in the process of changing my habit of starDng each day with coffee. I sDll like and drink coffee, but the habit of starDng my day, and having numerous cups of coffee in the morning is changing. I am consciously developing a new habit, not just trying to quit an old one. A quesDon we might each ask ourselves is: is there a habit I can consciously develop to deepen my faith and rela=onship with God? It usually takes several months of intenDonal acDon for a habit to become natural. Is there some habit you might seek to deepen your relaDonship with

God? -Commit to aEending worship every Sunday for two months -Start each morning making the sign of the cross and proclaiming: I am a bapDzed child of God -Subscribe to an electronic daily devoDon and commit yourself to reading it every day for 2 months -Begin each pay period with a sacrificial giJ to God (first fruits giving). BeEer yet, sign up for electronic automaDc deducDons from your checking account. -Say grace at every dinner for 2 months

There are numerous choices one can make. The key is making a commitment to establish a habit. Commit to an acDon for two months, unDl it becomes natural. Even small changes in our daily habits can make huge changes in our lives.

If you are interested in exploring the issue in greater depth, I encourage you to order a copy of the book, “The 7 habits of Jesus,” to discover a variety of spiritual habits to consider making a part of your daily life.

In Christ,

Pastor BrianPastor BrianPastor BrianPastor Brian Mother’s Day God gave us mothers, not only to give us life, but to nurture us with love. For those whose mothers have passed from this life to the next, may you find comfort in the memories of their love; For those whose mothers are alive, may you take the time to thank them for the love they have shown you through the years; For those who have not known the tender love of a mother, may you be nurtured with the love of God, friends, and family; For those of you who are mothers now, may the gracious love of God flow through you to your children. For those of you who were wished to be mothers, but were not, may the gracious love of God flow through you to all of God’s children. God bless all mothers, that they may reflect the love of God in the care of their children.

This is Part Two of last month’s stained glass symbolism column. In April, we discovered the many church and Bible symbols in the very large walls of stained glass in our sanctuary. Perhaps you had time to stand and gaze at the stained glass in order to find the many interesting symbols

of our faith. If not, there’s still time, as those walls of glass aren’t going anywhere! Take last month’s newsletter with you and read through the directions for finding each symbol.

In the narthex (entry of the church), there are two smaller stained glass windows that flank the sets of double entry doors. They represent work and worship, respectively. The one closest the stairs to the choir loft has many symbols of the work of our hands: drafting ruler, hammer and saw, calculator pad, football, bat and ball, a book, and a stethoscope. The other window is about worship: a guitar, musical notes on a staff, two upraised hands in praise below the golden communion chalice, which is radiating light beams. There’s also a symbol for Christ in the Chi-Rho (pronounced "KI-roe"). The Chi-Rho is a Christian symbol consisting of the intersection of the capital Greek letters Chi (Χ) and Rho (Ρ), which are the first two letters of "Christ" in Greek (ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ, Christos). The Chi-Rho can represent either Christ or Christianity and is also known as a Christogram. If you are able to discern any other work or worship symbols in the two windows, please let me know so I can update our church files. Thanks!

There are four more stained glass panels in the hallway that leads from the narthex to the church office. They represent four areas of Christian life, and they are as follows:

The one farthest to the right shows a scallop shell, which is associated with baptism and is frequently found on baptismal fonts. The three blue droplets remind us of the Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit – into which Christians are baptized, and especially of the baptism of Christ. Christ was baptized into the union of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The next panel to the left represents the chalice and wafer of what Martin Luther fondly called “The Lord’s Supper.” The chalice is a symbol of Holy Communion and the forgiveness of sin won by Christ's blood shed on the cross. The symbol on the wafer is IHS, which are the first three letters of the name Jesus in Greek. We believe that the bread or wafer of communion is the body of Christ, and that the wine or juice is his blood, both freely given in love for us.

The panel third from the right depicts two golden rings interlinked, which is a common symbol of marriage. The two tongues of flame are the fire of love that binds these two in holy matrimony. Marriage is a holy and blessed union between two persons, and Luther tells us that God smiles upon marriage.

Our last panel represents the descending dove, which is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. In the story of Jesus’ baptism, the Spirit descended on him in the form of a dove. If you see a three-rayed nimbus around the dove’s head, this identifies the Spirit as a member of the Trinity. Our dove has no nimbus, so it is reminding us that God always come down to us first; we do not go up to God, nor do we have to do anything to deserve God’s love. God loved us first, and it’s a result of God’s love that we love in response.

Take time to view our many stained glass windows and panels. They are a gift to us from generations of Lutherans who worshiped within these walls over the years. Enjoy the gift! Praising God,

LynneLynneLynneLynne

An Olympic athlete trainer says this: There are four negaDve feelings or thoughts that produce toxic chemicals in the brain. They are Hate,

Greed, Fear, and Jealousy. To get his athletes to do beEer, they must change these to Love, Generosity,

Courage, and Praise, he says. He claims that service to others is one of the best ways to move into the healthy context. Doing this has

proven to be effecDve in producing the winning edge. This is an interesDng discovery, and one that we would do

well to pay aEenDon to! Thoughts produce chemicals, and posiDve thoughts produce posiDve chemicals. Filling

your life with love, generosity, courage, and praise for others makes you funcDon beEer in all aspects of your

life. It is true that there will always be a Dme for sorrow and vexaDon, but they must not dominate us, or

they will infect the marrow of our lives and bend us into twisted and sad people. Give the necessary Dme to

anger, sorrow, and frustraDon, but don’t dwell there. Instead, give the majority of your life to compassionate

service and love, generosity, courage, and praise for others.

What’s Happening At Our Redeemer Preschool? What’s Happening At Our Redeemer Preschool? What’s Happening At Our Redeemer Preschool? What’s Happening At Our Redeemer Preschool?

April was a fun month at preschool. We started the month with Easter Parties, Egg Hunts and a visit from the Easter Bunny. Our half-day program was closed for Easter Break from the 3rd through the 10th, but we were still here with our Full Day children.

Then it was on to our fun unit on Transportation, Our older ones had a great day on their annual Amtrak Trip to San Juan Capistrano, with family there were about 59 of us that went this year. The weather was perfect and the kids had a blast. I think everyone was ready for a nap when we returned, I know I was :) Our littlest ones sang in Church on the 19th, I hope you were there to be able to enjoy their enthusiasm. Then it was on to Bugs and Sea Life as we prepared for our Annual Mother’s Day Tea/Luau… I bet you can just imagine how bugs and moms go together… but it really does :) Coming up on May, we only have a few weeks left of the regular school year, and we still have some great things planned. May is “Family Month” at ORP. We’ll start the month getting ready for Mom and our Annual Mother’s Day Tea. Following that, will be our Annual Father’s Night. Our 4 year old classes will visit Kindergarten and our little ones will visit the library for a spe-cial story time. Also planned for May is our HUGE unit on Dinosaurs, where we transform the playground and imaginations will grow. We will be closed Monday the 25th for Memorial Day. Fall registration is going on and our Summer Classes are starting to fill. If you have any questions regarding registration, or any other matter concerning the preschool, please give me a call. Again, thanks for all your Love and Support!
