In 1980 wintered-over at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, located at the geographic South Pole. I served as the chief meteorologist. From 1981 through 1986 I returned each austral summer season to the Antarctic to assist in the deployment of a number of automatic weather stations around the continent. Here are some photos
Icebergs, viewed from the cockpit of a Hercules
Ski-equipped Hercules aircraft provide the transportation
A geodesic dome provides shelter from the wind. Several small buildings are beneath the dome.
The “Clean Air” sampling station – measurements of CO2 and other trace gases
This two story structure housed the scientific work area and some of the sleeping quarters
Automatic Weather Stations

The Greenland Ice Sheet Project
The 3000 meters of ice core were retrieved over 5 summer seasons. As the cores were extracted from the drilling rig they were cut into one meter sections. Each was then sliced horizontally, half going into sealed storage and half analyzed in situ.
Electro-conductivity as climate signal
1993 – completion of 5 year drilling to bedrock
Core extracted near bedrock
