Welcome

Prelude “Lord, Take My Hand and Lead Me” J Behnke

Psalm 27:1-9 P The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my

life; of whom shall I be afraid? C When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble

and fall. P Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me,

yet I will be confident. C One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of

the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.

P For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.

C And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD.

P Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.”

C Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation!

LITURGY NOTATIONS

Prelude Music helps draw us into an attitude of prayer and praise. Processional Hymn We are a "singing church," so we follow the advice of the apostle Paul to teach and admonish "one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord" (Colossians 3:16). This hymn may be one of praise, prayer, or reflection on the season of the church year.

Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Confession of Sins and Absolution Matthew 16:25; Jeremiah 15:19 P Jesus said, “Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will

find it.” Let us empty ourselves of our fears and failures, confessing our sins and asking God to fill us with His peace.

C Far be it, O Lord, that I should not deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You. By Your cross and resurrection give to me Your forgiveness and assurance of new life by Your grace. Sin consumes me, for I am sinful from birth. Take away my selfish desires and fill me with Your love. Help me proclaim Your love in loving service to others. Amen.

P Thus says the Lord, “If you return, I will restore you.” Upon this your confession, I as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Song of Praise “10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)” J Myrin & M Redmam

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name, Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up it's a new day dawning It's time to sing Your song again Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me Let me be singing when the evening comes

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name, Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

You're rich in love and You're slow to anger Your name is great and Your heart is kind For all Your goodness I will keep on singing Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name, Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

And on that day when my strength is failing The end draws near and my time has come Still my soul will sing Your praise unending Ten thousand years and then forevermore

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Worship His holy name, Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name (Repeat)

Worship Your holy name, Lord I’ll worship Your holy name

LITURGY NOTATIONS

Invocation From the Latin “to call upon.” The spoken words at the beginning of the service remind us of our Baptism Confession We examine ourselves and publicly confess our sins. Such a confession at the beginning of the service provides a climate of acceptance. In spite of our sins, we are accepted by God, and in turn we can accept each other. *I John 1:8-10 [Rom. 7:14-8:4] Absolution Christ said to his disciples, "If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven"*. The pastor speaks for God and announces God's cleansing forgiveness to those who made confession. *John 20:23.

+ WORD +

Prayer of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. C Lord God, heavenly Father, since we cannot stand before You relying on anything we have

done, help us trust in Your abiding grace and live according to Your Word; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 55:1-5 “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.”

L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God!

Epistle Reading Philippians 1:12-14, 19-30 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God!

Gospel Reading Matthew 20:1-16 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 20th chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they

went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church P Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their

needs. Response after each petition

The Apostles’ Creed Written by St. Ambrose in about 390 AD in honor of the 12 Apostles and their confession of faith. Prayer of the Church Since God’s people are called to ‘pray without ceasing’ (1 Thess. 5:17), we take this time to collect all our prayers to pray with one heart and mind as the people of God. Offering Our words reflect the words God spoke to Abraham, “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2)

A Thank you, Lord, for blessing us so that we may be a blessing to others.

+ SACRAMENT +

P The Lord who called us in our Baptism and summoned us in His Word to follow where He leads now invites us to His supper. We gather at His table, assured of His presence and grateful for His sacrifice. Christ comes to us in the bread and wine. We are forgiven and strengthened for service.

C Amen.

Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13)

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Communion Confession P The Lord’s Supper is God’s gift for Christians who are properly instructed. (1 Cor. 10:17; Act

2:42) In communing, we want people to receive Christ’s body and blood for their good. (1 Cor. 11:23-32) This means that as you come to the Lord’s Table you affirm with each communicant that Jesus is your Savior and Lord; and with Lutheran Christians you confess:

C I recognize and confess that I am a sinner. I repent of my sin and ask God’s forgiveness. C I believe that Jesus Christ is my only Lord and Savior from sin, Satan and death. C I believe that the risen Christ is really present in the Sacrament and, under the form of the

bread and wine, I receive His true body and blood for the forgiveness of my sin and the strengthening of my faith and life. (Augsburg Confession – Article X)

Words of Our Lord (Matthew 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24; Luke 22:19–20; 1 Corinthians 11:23–25)

Agnus Dei “Behold The Lamb” K Getty & S Townend (v. 1)

Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, Slain for us and we remember The promise made that all who come in faith, Find forgiveness at the cross So we share in this Bread of Life, And we drink of His sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of peace, Around the table of the King

Lord’s Prayer We pray to God as our Father using the prayer of the family of God* because the Lord's Supper is our family meal. * Matt. 6:9ff; Luke 11:2ff Words of Our Lord The pastor speaks the words which Jesus spoke when He instituted the Supper with His disciples in the Upper Room. With these words the bread and wine are consecrated, that is, set apart for God's use in the special meal. * 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20. Agnus Dei Agnus Dei is a Latin phrase meaning "Lamb of God." John the Baptist spoke these words as he pointed to Jesus coming toward him (John 1:29). As Christ comes to us in the Holy Supper, we recognize him as the Lamb of God sacrificed for us to free us from the bondage of sin and death. * John 1:29; Is. 53:7.

Prayer of Thanks Once again, we express our appreciation to our gracious God for giving us this Holy Meal through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. * Pss. 107: Benediction The blessing spoken by the pastor is the Aaronic benediction, the blessing God first gave to Aaron and the other priests to speak to the people of Israel. Jesus Christ, our High Priest, has come to us in a special way through this Holy Meal. The blessing is God's promise that Christ will go with us as we leave the church and return to the world to serve Him. We say "Amen" to affirm the blessing; "So be it -- it is true!" * Numbers 6:23-27.

Journey of DiscipleshipDon’t think of this as your Spiritual GPA, think of it as your Spiritual GPS. You are not being graded by God. And you are on a journey of faith. It only makes sense to check in, at least occasionally, to see where you have been and where you are going.

If your compasses show positive movement forward, don’t get complacent or proud. Remember it’s about what Jesus is doing in your life. Give Him the glory!

If your compasses show you’re kind of stuck or moving in the wrong direction, don’t despair. Remember it’s about what Jesus is doing in your life. Keep your eyes on His promises and see what He is going to do next!

This is just the next small step on a life-long journey of discipleship, a journey we’re on together!

Review your GPS results with someone who can point you back to Jesus and His love for you. In that discipling relationship, ask:

What’s Jesus speaking into my life?

What response is Jesus shaping in me?

What promise from Jesus am I holding onto?
