Resuming the Sat. 5 p.m. Mass: As we continue to acclimate to new phases of reopening, we are resuming the 5 p.m. Vigil Mass on Saturdays for the public NEXT WEEKEND on Sat., July 18 and it will continue thereafter. In order to record a Mass for YouTube that is broadcasted on Sunday mornings, the church will be locked from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday evenings until further notice.
Family-Based Religious Education: It’s with great enthusiasm that I announce the start of an exciting new approach to Religious Education here at Christ the King. The basic idea behind this new pro-gram is to teach the Catholic Faith to parents, that they might then teach the faith to their own children.
When the threat of the Coronavirus shut down so many areas of life for months, our Religious Educa-tion program was also a casualty. Kids could not at-tend their weekly classes on Wednesday evenings and our volunteer parish catechists could not be ex-pected to abruptly learn how to teach in a remote learning atmosphere. As a result, most parents be-came more intensely involved in their children’s edu-cation. Without group classes or even attendance at Masses, parents also took on their primary role as catechists and models to their own children. I won’t romanticize about this reality because I know it was challenging for many but it also showed us the invalu-able role parents have always had in living their faith and sharing it with their kids in the home.
Both the possibility of health mandates to remote-learn again later on this year and the positive stories of parents reclaiming their teaching roles and experi-encing greater connection with their children and their own relationship with Jesus led us to consider and now adopt this new model of formation.
On hearing about this new method that equips par-ents themselves to teach the Catholic Faith to their kiddos, some parents have expressed the concern, “But I’m not trained as a teacher! And I’m worried I don’t know enough about our religion!” As Jesus told us so often, I repeat: Do not be afraid! Who do you think has been teaching in our religious education classes all these years? Parents just like you! Sure, a few of them have had careers as teachers...but it’s been pretty rare to find a trained theologian among them. As a parent, you will be provided with the mate-rial and tools you need to accomplish this crucial task. And there’s something more that you’ve already been given...
Whenever a child is baptized in the Catholic Church, the child’s parents are reminded that, in asking for his or her baptism, they are accepting the responsibility of training their son or daughter in the practice of the

Faith and the duty to bring him or her up to keep God’s commandments. The religious education of their own children is part of the God-given vocation of parents, and the Lord never calls us to do something without also giving us everything we need to accom-plish it. So, on top of the essential material and tools our parish will provide, God has given you his grace to do this! And that’s something no teacher in the class-room could ever claim.
How does the A Family of Faith method work? A par-ent session here at the parish (90 minutes) will be held near the beginning of each month, to help par-ents deepen their own knowledge of the Catholic Faith—while only one parent is required to attend, both are highly encouraged to do so, which is why childcare will be provided. Afterwards, parents them-selves will work with their own children with two at-home lessons (30-45 minutes each) per month, with additional activities to help make the Catholic Faith a part of their family’s daily life. And then there is a com-munity meeting here at the parish (90 minutes) near the end of each month, which is for the entire family, parents and children together. The community

meeting builds community and ensures accountability.
I know this is all rather new but be encouraged: You can do this and we can do this together! It’s going to be a life-giving experience for your whole family. More details will soon follow about expectations, dates and the calendar, but we hope you will join us for this new adventure. You parents are the heroes of your chil-dren. They listen to and imitate your ideas, actions and words all the time. Imagine being that same force of influence by imparting your faith to your own chil-dren.
If you would like to know more about the actual model of A Family of Faith, visit https://sophiainstituteforteachers.org/shop/family-of-faith. Moreover, if you have any questions, I encour-age you to contact Christina Sanchez, our parish Director of Religious Education & Sacramental Life, at [email protected] or (402) 391-3624. I look forward to embarking on this new venture with you and allowing Jesus to transform our parish and every home into a family of faith.

Confessions: In addition to individual appoint-ments with our priests, we will offer confession in the church from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. on July 11, 12, & 19. The pre-Covid times for the sacrament of Reconcilia-tion on Saturdays and Sundays will resume on July 25 & 26 in the confessional rooms in the church.
Priests’ Vacations: I will return from vacation and resume work on Tuesday, July 14. Fr. Boyd will leave for vacation this Wednesday, July 15 through July 22. Please pray for Fr. Boyd and for a safe and refreshing break for him.
Sunday Tithing: July 1st we entered into our new fiscal year. You have been so supportive of the parish throughout our last fiscal year, even during the months severely affected by Covid precautions. I can-not thank you enough for the sacrifices you are mak-ing to keep our parish and outreach going. As we con-tinue to pay salaries, maintain the buildings and pay our utilities, we still need your ongoing, weekly giving. Please place your Sunday offerings in one of the blue baskets at the major entrances before or after week-end Masses or you can slide them under the Rectory door. You may also mail in your contributions or click the easy-to-find link on our parish website to donate digitally. Easiest for you, you can move your tithing to an Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) from your bank – a simple phone call with Rick Kucirek, our Financial Di-rector, at (402) 391-3606 ext. 212 can help make that happen. God bless you.

The Memorial of St. Kateri Tekakwitha is July 14. Known as the “Lily of
the Mohawks,” she is the fourth Native American to be venerated in
the Catholic Church and the first to be canonized. This is the only
known portrait of her. It was painted by Father Chauchetière c. 1690.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON – PSALM 17 (16)
As for me, in justice I shall behold your face; I shall be filled with the vision of your glory.
O Lord, hear a cause that is just; pay heed to my cry. Turn your ear to my prayer: no deceit is on my lips. From you may my justice come forth. Your eyes dis-cern what is upright.
FIRST READING (Is 55:10-11)
Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it
RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Ps 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14)
R. (Lk 8:8) The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.
You have visited the land and watered it; greatly have you enriched it. God’s watercourses are filled; you have prepared the grain.
Thus have you prepared the land: drenching its furrows, breaking up its clods, Softening it with showers, blessing its yield.
You have crowned the year with your bounty, and your paths overflow with a rich harvest; The untilled meadows overflow with it, and rejoicing clothes the hills.
The fields are garmented with flocks and the valleys blanketed with grain. They shout and sing for joy.
Sunday Mass Readings for Today
SECOND READING (2 Rom 8:18-23)
Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious free-dom of the children of God.
We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemp-tion of our bodies.
GOSPEL (Full text Mt 13:1-23; abridged 13:1-9)
On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore.
And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it with-ered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

Everyday Stewardship

Using the best seeds doesn’t always guarantee the best plants. An older Italian gentleman straight from Italy gave me these amazing tomato seeds that he claimed produced the best tomatoes ever grown. Without doubt, the fruit he shared with me was a testament to that fact. These tomatoes were amazing! I couldn’t wait until the next growing season to plant these seeds and harvest my own tomatoes. The whole experiment ended up a failure. I did everything the gentleman said, but my fruit didn’t even come close. What happened? At first I was perplexed, then some years later the light dawned. The problem wasn’t the seeds, it was the soil!
You cannot sow seeds in any old place and in a haphazard way and expect them to be at their best. It doesn’t work that way. Planting the seeds is the easiest part. Preparing the soil is the challenge. Tilling, mulching, enriching, and building up the nutrients are all required for good fruit. Then after the seeds are planted, more care is required in order to maintain that healthy, nutrient rich environment for those seeds to sprout, grow, and flourish. God happily sows the seeds of his Word. What do we do with them?
If we expect to be a passive bystander and have good fruit magically grow, we are mistaken.
Bearing the good fruit of God’s Word requires preparation and work. We have to cultivate the soil of our lives so that those seeds can find a proper home. This one thing alone takes a great deal of patience, time, and effort. What kind of preparation have we put into our lives so that we can be a recipient of God’s seed? It takes a great deal of soul-searching and ego-checking to properly prepare. God is the ever faithful and persistent sower. If the seeds do not bear fruit the first time, God will come back time and time again, giving it another try.
If we have created a suitable bed for sowing, then once the seed is sown, we must properly maintain them. What is our maintenance plan for the seeds of God’s Word? We need not only a source for water but a watering schedule. We need to weed, aerate the soil, nurture the young plants, protect them, and provide proper nutrients. What does our spiritual maintenance plan look like? If we have done all things well, imagine what the seeds of God’s Word could produce in us! @LPi
