Celebrating 15 very successful years It was one Monday morning 15 years ago when some 23 of us were seated in a circle on

the Nomad Stage trying to decide what show could we possibly put on in just one week.

The Nomads had recently staged the farce “When Did You Last See Your Trousers?” and

after some deliberation Andy Marber, who is still with the company today, came with the

title “When Did You Last See Your Glasses? about an eccentric professor travelling the

world to find his lost spectacles?

In subsequent years Play in a Week has become a regular feature in the theatre’s calendar

and this year on Monday morning over 80 people sat round the stage to for a first read of

this year’s play – “Around The World In 80 days”. By coincidence it is another play about

an eccentric chap travelling round the globe! This time written by Rachel Barnett and Jay

Bristow.

The play has been professionally written and directed for 9 years; the playwright for 7

years was Anita Sullivan and the last 2 by Rachel Barnett. For 9 years our hugely

inspirational director has been Brandon McGuire, a long time Nomad.

It has been our aim to create a really inclusive theatre and over the last 15 years, in

addition to Plays in a Week, we have also run several two weeks of training covering

various aspects of theatre craft, as well as tailor-made workshops both in the theatre and

at disability organisations’ venues. We gave all these activities the title Let Loose.

All these plays and activities have had to be funded and this could not have been done

without the great financial support we have received from Arts & Business, BT, Cargill plc,

Exxon Mobil, Guildford Borough, Wills and Smerdon and others, including many generous

individuals.

This year’s production is probably the most challenging yet not only for the actors but also

the many many people, led by our very hardworking Sarah Thomas, who work so hard

backstage and in other ways to make these productions possible. We are hugely grateful

to them all.

Yes, over the last 15 years we have much to be proud of and celebrate!

Bill Pearson.

Actors get their thanks from the applause; some others are named in the programme as having achieved specific tasks to ensure a successful production. But for Play in a Week there are many other people who freely give their time and skills to ensure success. This takes many forms including chauffeuring people to and from the theatre, providing support for individuals, making props’ and cups of tea. Some take up to a week’s leave from work, just to be a part of this special week! We thank them all most sincerely – they

are the backbone of the Nomads and our Let Loose programme. Thank you

After last year's dress rehearsal of our Olympic spectacular, "Openings", I was

sitting with some of the cast chatting about what we should do next - travel and

foreign countries were themes which came up. Instantly my mind leapt to one

of my favourite stories Jules Verne's Around The World in 80 Days - mostly so I

could see a hot air balloon gracing the stage of The Nomad Theatre.

I was buzzing with ideas for how to adapt the novel for the stage. I knew that

this was the perfect time and place, who else would have the imagination, wit

and courage (not to mention skilful scenongraphers) to take on such an epic

than the Play in a Week cast and crew.

Due to my own "little production" I knew I wouldn't be able to be with the play

this year (I've been going around the week in 80 nappy changes instead!) but

could instantly imagine Andrea choreographing a stunning Bollywood dance

number, Jay composing catchy tunes inspired by the international story, the

wonderful company gleefully taking on the challenge of multiple roles

energetically, and Brandon ... well, being Brandon and being the only director

I've ever known not to be phased by having to stage an elephant, tight rope act

and hot air balloon!

I've really missed my favourite week of the year and although I've had a

beautiful baby to distract me a big piece of my heart has been down in East

Horsley with the gang.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the week and working on the show - as I write

these notes I can't wait to see how it's all come together.

A final word on a personal note - sadly my wonderful grandma passed away just

before I started writing the play - she would have thoroughly appreciated the

music hall frame and I really missed being able to call on her encyclopaedic

musical knowledge. This play is very much my tribute to her.

Rachel Barnett - writer

Brandon McGuire - Director

Welcome to the 15th Play in a week. (Can it really be 15 years? I hear you say). Since its inception the scale of the productions and numbers of people involved have grown enormously. This year as we attempt to go “Around the World in 80 Days” in just five days, we have nearly fifty performers on stage, and another 20 stage crew, helpers and support. Once more Rachel has given us a wonderful script, this time a new take on a familiar story, Around the World in 80 Days, but with a twist – the action is set in an old time music hall. This has given the cast, some of whom have been with us for the whole fifteen years, the opportunity to work with new songs exquisitely crafted by Jay together with some old familiar songs from a bygone age. And dance sequences beautifully choreographed by the gifted Andrea. A real challenge to which the cast have risen, as always, with huge enthusiasm commitment and laughs. We have missed having Rachel with us during the week this year but she has been involved in a different kind of production – the birth of her son Toby. Welcome Toby! We look forward to seeing you on stage very soon. I would also like to thank our wonderful stage manager Tracey, and all the backstage crew and support who have worked so tirelessly to get us around the world .You are an inspiration! Play in a Week continues to play an important role in the life of the theatre, providing a wonderful opportunity to let loose the dramatic talents of as many people as possible in a fully inclusive way. I am proud to have been involved with 11 productions so far. If you would like to get involved in any way do come and chat with Sarah or me Now sit back relax and come with us on a journey of a lifetime.

Jay Bristow – Musical Director

I am delighted to be at PIAW for the eighth time! Year on year I have seen the standard of acting, singing, puppetry and production increase, but the thing that excites me and brings me back each year is the people! I have so much fun over the week and enjoy tapping into the unlimited talent and ideas of the actors who help come up with the tunes and lyrics of the songs.

Andrea Atkinson

This is Andrea’s 5th PIAW and she has loved every minute of rehearsals. The cast, despite the intense heat, have as usual shown boundless energy, commitment and enthusiasm and have made her job an absolute pleasure. Enjoy!
