Managing Concerns About Falls Have you ever turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on your favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you. Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result is severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interaction with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older participants. Participants learn to set realistic goals, to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. The Manchester Health is offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls. This 4 week program starts on Tuesday and Thursdays, December 8 & 10, 2015 at the Manchester Senior Center located at 549 East Middle Turnpike from 10:00 to 12:00 . A workbook and healthy refreshments are provided. You must register by calling the Manchester Heath Department at (860) 647- 3173 as space is limited.

SEVEN WINTER SAFETY TIPS FOR SENIORS

During the winter months, ice, snow and cold temperatures can make life challenging for everyone. Slippery sidewalks and cold weather can cause a wide range of injuries and illnesses -- especially for seniors. Here is some helpful advice for preventing common winter dangers that the elderly population faces. 1. Avoid Slipping on Ice

Icy, snowy roads and sidewalks make it easy to slip and fall. Often these falls cause major injuries such as hip and wrist fractures, head trauma and major lacerations. Make sure to wear shoes with good traction and non-skid soles, and stay inside until the roads are clear.

2. Dress for Warmth Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia -- a condition where the body temperature dips too low. Don't let indoor temperatures go too low and dress in layers. Use a scarf to cover your mouth and protect your lungs. Your body temperature should never dip below 95 degrees -- if it does get medical assistance immediately.

3. Fight Wintertime Depression Because it can be difficult and dangerous to get around, many seniors have less contact with others during cold months. This can breed feelings of loneliness and isolation. To help avoid these issues, family members can check in on seniors as often as possible; even a short, daily phone call can make a big difference. Seniors can also arrange a check-in system with neighbors and friends, where each person looks in on one or two others daily.

4. Check the Car Driving during the winter can be hazardous for anyone. Get your car serviced before wintertime hits -- or ask a family member to bring it to a garage for you. Checking things like the oil, tires, battery and wipers can make a big difference on winter roads.

SAFETY TIPS FOR SENIORS – cont’d

5. Prepare for Power Outages Winter storms can lead to power outages. Make sure you have easy access to flashlights and a battery-powered radio in case the power goes out. Stockpile warm blankets. Longer power outages can spoil the food in your refrigerator and freezer so keep a supply of non-perishable foods that can be eaten cold on hand. If the power goes out, wear several layers of clothing, including a hat. Move around a lot to raise your body temperature.

6. Eat a Varied Diet Because people spend more time indoors and may eat a smaller variety of foods, nutritional deficits -- especially Vitamin D deficiency -- can be a problem. Consumption of foods that are fortified with Vitamin D, such as milk, grains and seafood is recommended.

7. Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Using a fireplace, gas heater or lanterns can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your safety by checking the batteries on your carbon monoxide detector and buying an updated one if you need to.

The most important tip to keep in mind during the c older months is to ask for help. If you need to clear your property of snow and ice, don't hesitate to ask a family member or neighbor, or hire a professional. Arrange rides to the grocery store and doctor's appointments. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Wintertime certainly poses challenges for seniors, but with a bit of planning and awareness, you will stay healthy and experience the joys of springtime soon enough.

10 Simple Tips to Be Grateful~ Adapted from Donald Latumahina Everyone wants to live a joyful life. But how can we achieve it? How can we live a joyful life despite the not-so-good things that occasionally happen in our life? If you are grateful, you will see the world differently. You will see that there are always good things behind everything that happen. You will realize that your life is wonderful, and you will be joyful. To help you be a grateful person, here are 10 simple tips: 1. Realize how rich you are ~ Often we think that we need more and more money. This is one of the

main reasons that makes us difficult to be grateful. But do you realize how rich you are now? Go online to Google Global Rich List , enter your annual income, and see the result. Chances are you are financially richer than billions of other people. In fact, you most likely sit in the top tier of the world’s richness ranking. Of course, riches are also more than financial.

2. Realize what a healthy and prosperous life you have ~ Our standard of living today is much higher than almost all people in the history of the world. For example, Kings in the past could not match your convenience in traveling today! Today people as a whole are healthier and more prosperous thanks in part to the evolution of modern technologies, conveniences and improved medical care.

Grateful tips – cont’d

3. Realize what a blessing it is to live in peace ~ No matter how rich and healthy you are, life will be

full of fear and misery in the time of war. Can you imagine being in the midst of a city bombarded with bombs? It’s a nightmare. Living in peace is a great blessing which by itself deserves your sincerest gratitude.

4. Open your eyes to see the good things in your life ~ We tend to see the bad things that happen in our life but overlook the good things. Open your eyes and be observant of those good things. Even small things matter. If someone calls you a friend, that’s something you should be grateful for. If a child smiles at you, let it remind you that there’s always hope.

5. Maintain a “good things” journal ~ Take one step further and write the good things that happen in

your life in a journal. When life looks dark and it’s difficult for you to be grateful, open and read your journal. You will soon realize the wonderful life you have and you will get new strength to overcome your problems.

6. Understand that there are positive things behind all the terrible things that happen ~ At the very

least, tragedy teach us valuable lessons. It all depends on our perspective.

7. Put Gratitude into Practice ~ Understanding that you should be grateful won’t help much if you don’t put it into practice. Think about the good things that happen in your days and express your gratitude.

8. Meet positive people ~ You will be like the people you gather with. It’s hard for you to be grateful if

the people you meet are negative people. Surround yourself with positive people who themselves are grateful people, and it will be much easier and natural for you to be a grateful person.

9. Focus on giving ~ You will be grateful if your mind focuses on what you have rather than what you

don’t have. By giving, your mind will focus on what you have rather than what you don’t have. Most people focus on receiving which makes their mind focus on what they don’t have. No wonder it’s difficult for them to be grateful.

10. Decide to be a grateful person ~ The above nine tips can help you become a grateful person, but

eventually it’s up to you to decide whether or not you want to be one. If you decide to be a grateful person, then be it. The same thing happens otherwise. No matter what happens to you, it is still you who decide how you will respond.
