Glendale Unifi ed School District teachers Karine Armen and Gagik Galfayan received awards from the Armenian American Public Service Association (AAPSE) on May 7, 2016 at the group’s third annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon at Loews Hollywood Hotel.

Galfayan, who teaches 6th grade FLAG Armenian at Jefferson Elementary, received the Rising Star Teacher

Shannon Kracker has always been involved in charity work since she was a young girl. Her father, a doctor, always instilled giving back to the community. At a young age, she and her family would bring hats to the children that were diagnosed with cancer. She would prepare lunches and deliver them to the homeless. And anytime a neighbor or friend needed help in any way, including preparing meals, she was the one to count on. Growing up with these wonderful qualities has shaped her into the wonder woman and teacher she is today.

Glendale Police’s Cops for Kids names Kracker Citizen of the Year

Shannon Kracker’s 7th grade class at Rosemont Middle School along with representatives from the Glendale Police Department.

    Shannon Kracker

Shannon Kracker has been a 7th grade English teacher at Rosemont Middle School for 17 years. She is described by her coworkers as a fi reball, full of life, dedicated to her job, as well as a beautiful person inside and out. Her students character-ize her as a fun and fabulous teacher. They absolutely love her and keep in contact with her even after they leave Rosemont.

In her fi rst seven years as a teacher at Rosemont, Mrs. Kracker was involved with Builder’s Club. For the past 10 years she has been an advisor for the Charity Junior Scholarship Foundation. This “club” is for 7 & 8th graders that dem-onstrate a high academic and citizen grades. These club members are expected to do 15 hours of community service both in school and in the community. Through this foundation, they helped Make-A-Wish Foundation as well as helped Heifer International. They raised $24,000 to purchase heifers for families in third world countries. They have paired up with Project Jambo and adopted nine young girls from Africa. With an additional $24,000 that they raised, they were able to send these nine girls to school, including their tuition, books and uniforms. She has held shoe drives and gathered over 6,000 pairs of shoes that were sent to Africa.

In October 2015, Mrs. Kracker had heard about a young high school student that was involved in a horrifi c traffi c accident near Rosemont Middle School. This girl went through many operations and luckily pulled through. When Mrs. Kracker found out the the Rosemont staff was getting together to help this young girl, she rallied her 7th grade students to participate, as well. The 7th grade students helped raise money and gift cards for the young girl. When presented to the young victim of the traffi c accident, she was absolutely speechless.

These are a few of the reasons why the Glendale Police Department’s Cops for Kids selected her as this year’s Citizen of the Year.

Award. Armen teaches Transitional Kindergarten at Mann Elementary and received the Golden Apple Award. She used to be Galfayan’s third grade teacher. Galfayan is a Clark Magnet High School alumni.

Thank you and congratulations to GUSD retirees

Valley View was plastered with signs all over of how much the com-munity and the parents respect the caring professionals who teach and guide the children every school day. Decorated doors, banners and posters reminded staff how much they are cherished. The annual Teachers/Staff Appreciation Lunch was held on May 2; Valley View’s PTA provided delicious food and a beautiful cake to honor the school’s new California Gold Ribbon School award. The Valley View staff are so blessed to have such dedicated and hard working parents.

GUSD staff are celebrated all over the districtClassifi ed and certifi cated appreciation weeks were celebrated during the month of May.

California’s Legislature has designated the third full week of May as Classifi ed School Employee Week to recognize the important contributions of classifi ed school employees and to honor these contributions. The California School Employees Association (CSEA) said Classifi ed school employees are the everyday heroes who play crucial roles in our schools. From transporting and feeding students to teaching them vital skills and ensuring that schools are operating smoothly, classi-fi ed employees are integral to public education.

The Monte Vista Korean Club provided lunch. The meal included instructions on how to eat Bibim Bap, a delicious “make-your-own” rice dish with meat, vegetables and special sauce as well as special posters noting the importance of a teacher!

The fi rst week of May is designated Teacher Appreciation Week. According to the National Parent Teacher Association, teachers are real life superheroes. They educate, innovate, encourage and support. Every day they touch the lives of millions of children and their work and impact extends far beyond the boundaries of the classroom.

Schools throughout the district honored their staff with feasts and acclaim. Some schools shared pictures showing how they paid tribute to these superstars.

Valley View just had a wonderful Author/Illustrator Day on May 12. This won-derful program is put together by the Assistance League of Glendale and helps to stimulate literacy, creativity and promote learning about the writing process. Authors and illustrators make four presentations each in classrooms. At the end of the day, a book sale is held for students to purchase books at a reduced price and have the books signed by the author/illustrator.

The Assistance League donated $1,000 to help Valley View purchase library books. In addition, the school was given copies of any books by the authors and illustrators visiting that day that were not already in their library.

Valley View Elementary School held its annual Caldecott/Newbery Art showcase for Open House on May 5. Students in TK to 3rd grade participated by reading Caldecott award winning books, while 4th to 6th grad-ers read Newbery award winning books. All participating students submitted one or two art projects depicting their favorite book's theme or main idea.

All projects were judged by the principal, Dr. Brook Reynolds, and Valley View teachers, Mrs. Lisa Kristen Macho and Mr. Robert Gifford. All participating students received a certifi cate of participation. Winners were chosen for each grade level and for different catego-ries. Open Houses showcase students’ bests

Keppel had a different kind of open house this year. The Make Keppel Special Foundation wanted to showcase the arts at Keppel and show how the generous donations are used for the art teachers and programs.

The kick off to open house started with a 3rd grade performance with Korean drumming in the front of the school. As parents walked in, they headed towards the dance room where the 5th graders were dancing with dance teacher, Mrs. Neel. Parents then headed to the cafeteria below and got a glimpse of the Lion King performance. The tour ended with a display near the art studio and fi nally at the Keppel amphitheater with a 2nd grade choral performance. After the arts showcase, parents and students visited their classrooms fi lled with arts integrated projects.

The public was invited to the unveiling of a student-made sculpture exhibit at the Glendale Central Library on 222 E. Harvard on May 21.

The sculptures were made by Keppel Elementary School 4th and 5th graders under the direction of art teacher Ms. Joan Zierhut.

The life size fi gures, made of plastic wrap and packing tape, depicted students doing everything from swinging on the jungle gym and reading to playing basketball and watering fl owers. There are 40 unique sculptures and all will be placed throughout seven different

Glendale libraries. The exhibit will run until July 30, 2016.

May 21 was #teamkeppel’s third year in GUSD’s robotics tournament. The team was coached by two 6th grade students from Toll Middle School, Hunter Pruett and Hayk Yengibaryan, and Parker-Anderson Enrichment’s Coach Alex Ochoa. The Parker-Anderson class met once a week during lunch. They helped with scholar-ships for the students who could not afford the fees for enrichment classes. With the volunteer and support from the coaches, Keppel received 2nd place in Robot Design.

Coco Chanel, Mother Teresa and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. came to life at Monte Vista’s Open House. FLAG Korean second graders wrote biographies and created dolls depicting their selected persons using 2-liter plastic bottles.
