A: While daytime soapsrecast characters all thetime, it’s seldom done inprime time. Smollett, whofaces a grand jury soon,is going to have a limitednumber of scenes on thehit FOX show’s final twoepisodes of the season, but as of this writing hehasn’t been fired.TMZ reported that five

of Smollett’s nine sceneshave been cut from theepisode that is currentlyfilming, but as for nextseason, we’ll just haveto wait and see what fateawaits his character.***Q: Whatever happened

to actor Trevor St. Johnfrom “One Life to Live”?I thought he was so hand-some and such a good ac-tor that he’d be in moviesby now. -- B.G.A: St. John has worked

steadily since he playedTodd, and later Victor, onthe ABC soap. He has ap-peared in some movies, including “The BourneUltimatum,” but mostlyguest-starred on variousprime-time shows. He’snow a regular on the CWseries “Roswell, NewMexico.” The science fic-tion drama also stars twoother daytime soap gradu-ates: Nathan Parsons (ex-Ethan, “General Hospi-tal”) and Tyler Blackburn(ex-Ian, “Days of OurLives”).

JUST THE FACTS2019 Nissan Leaf Plus

Two hundred miles is apaltry range for a vehiclepowered by an internal-combustion engine. Butfor those eyeing an EV asan affordable, low-hassletransportation choice, thatdistance has quickly be-come the de facto minimum for those looking to buck convention withan electric vehicle. While it’s taken some time for Nissan’s Leaf to reachthat mark (it debuted for 2011 offering just 73 miles of EPA-estimatedrange), the new-for-2019 Leaf Plus not only gains access to the 200-mile club but brings additional power and features along for the ride.

Dear Car Talk:I have always thought

that tires were, along withbrakes, the first line of de-fense in a car. I know froma lot of biking that tire pres-sure has a big effect on roll-ing resistance and thereforeon fuel economy. WheneverI take my car for an oilchange, they inflate the tiresto 35 psi, even though theplate inside the driver’s doorsays to use 33 psi. I haveto always ask them to cor-rect it. I’m guessing a lot ofpeople overinflate their tiresto improvemileage. But I as-sume that the engineers whodesigned the car gave care-ful consideration to safety, comfort and economy whendeciding on the tires and thecorrect pressure. Of course, where I live, in Minnesota,we can have temperaturesof 20 one day and 30 belowzero the next, somaintainingthe correct pressure isn’t al-ways easy. That being said, what is your opinion? Bestto set the correct pressurefrequently to keep the cor-rect amount of rubber onthe road, or overinflate foreconomy? Does it matterthat much? -- Barney Obvi-ously, the best thing to do isto check your tire pressurethree times a day to makessure it’s always exactly whatthe manufacturer calls for.But nobody does that. Norwould we recommend it.“Sorry, I can’t make yourcollege graduation, dear.I’m scheduled to check mytire inflation during the cer-emony.” So given that peopledon’t check their tires fre-quently and that tempera-tures vary, we recommendoverinflating your tires bya little bit. It’s always moredangerous to underinflatetires than to overinflatethem -- within a reasonablerange. As a rule, you neverwant to drive on tires thatare more than 10 percentbelow their recommendedpressure (that’s typicallywhen your tire pressurewarning light will come on,if your car has one). Under-inflation can cause heat tobuild up and tread to sepa-rate, causing a blowout (seethe Ford-Firestone contro-versy, February 2000). So ifyour car calls for 33 psi, younever want to let the tires gobelow about 30 psi. But tireexperts say running them at35 or even 38 or 40 is not go-ing to endanger you or causeany meaningful degradationin braking or handling. Atworst, you’d have a stifferride, and have a fewwelts onyour head from hitting thatpesky dome light. If you livein an area where tempera-tures vary widely, you’rebetter off overinflating by abit. Tire pressure changesabout 1 psi for every 10 de-gree change in temperature. So if your temperature goesfrom 20 one day to 30 belowzero the next, your tire pres-sure would drop 5 psi. If youstarted at 33 psi, you’d dropto 28 psi, which is too low.Whereas if you started at 35,you’d drop to 30 psi and stillbe fine. If you live where thetemperature is stable, usethe manufacturer’s recom-mended tire pressure, or abit more. And check yourpressure once a month orso to account for slow leaksand the change of seasons.Or just wait for the warninglight to come on, if you haveone. And if you live wherethe temperature is all overthe place day to day, thenoverinflate by a few psi tobe safe.

3 ways to prepare forstormy weather

(BPT) - No matterwhere you live, theweather can be un-predictable any timeof year. Storms candisrupt your fam-ily’s routine, but a littlepreparation can meanreducing the stress thatunexpected weatherevents can cause. Pre-paring for storms orother weather condi-tions just takes a fewpractical, proactivesteps that can save youtime, money and giveyou peace of mind.

Prep your family. Makesure everybody in thefamily is equippedwith everyone’s phonenumbers (not just onphones), in case batter-ies go dead or service is

inaccessible. Create apractical plan for whatto do if school buses aredelayed or canceled, orif Mom and Dad can’tget home from workon time. Designatesafe places for every-one to go or meet in theneighborhood duringa weather emergency.Make sure older chil-dren who may be homealone know where tofind emergency sup-plies such as flashlightsif the power goes outbefore parents can gethome, so they feel con-fident about handlingany unexpected situa-tion.

Prep your car. Investin the best tires, andensure that they’rein tip-top condition toprotect you and yourfamily during icy orsnowy weather. Checkyour tire pressure tomake sure the PSI isat optimal levels rec-ommended by your ve-hicle’s manufacturer, since tire pressurecan decrease around1 PSI per every 10 de-grees the temperaturegoes down. Make sureyou have a good sparetire. Keep your vehiclegassed up when tem-peratures are colder, toprevent gas line freez-ing, and make sureyou’re caught up onmaintenance such as oilchanges, safety inspec-

tions and manufacturerrecalls. Make room inyour trunk for emer-gency supplies likejumper cables, a first-aid kit, blankets and asafety flare, in case youare stuck in your carfor any length of time.

Prep your home. Feelready for any weatherconditions by assem-bling an accessibleemergency box, com-plete with flashlightsand spare batteries, bottled water and non-perishable food, plusa first-aid kit. Then,be prepared for poweroutages due to weatherevents by investing ina generator. Automaticstandby generatorsfrom Kohler are per-

manently installed out-side a home, similar toa central air condition-ing unit. The genera-tors connect to a home’selectrical system andrun on natural gas orpropane. When poweris lost, automatic stand-by generators turn onwithin 10 seconds, evenwhen nobody is home, and units can be re-motely monitored froma smartphone or lap-top. Larger generatorscan power everythingfrom lights and HVACto sump pumps andhome security systems.Smaller units can powera few key circuits. Formore information ongenerators, visit www.kohlergenerators.com.Having a generator canprevent a host of incon-veniences, from foodspoilage and lost com-munications to loss ofheat and lighting.

Thinking ahead beforethe unexpected hap-pens saves time andmoney - while relievingyour worries - duringany kind of storm. Be-ing prepared is worththe investment, offer-ing you and your familypeace of mind. You maynot be able to controlthe weather, but youcan absolutely controlhow you prepare andrespond to it, no matterwhat the forecast.
