Autism is a lifelong neurological disorder, robbing children of cognitive, communication and social skills. No one knows what causes autism. There is no cure...yet. Currently 1 in 68 children in America is identified as having an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and the rate of autism is skyrocketing. Children do not outgrow autism. In the United States over 2 million individuals live with autism, making it more prevalent than juvenile diabetes, AIDS and childhood cancer combined.

The for autistic kids Foundation was established to raise funds for the education of autistic kids and the research for the early detection, prevention, treatment and cure for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

Willie is fortunate to have parents who can take care of him and provide him with the necessary tutoring and programs he requires to make progress toward living a better quality of life. Through your support and generosity, 100% of the money raised from the golf benefit today will assist autistic children who would not otherwise be afforded the same opportunities. Also, all administrative costs are donated to for autistic kids.

Each March, the NCAA Tournament features 68 of the best college basketball teams, duking it out in a single-elimination format. New Trier’s Intramural Night League takes it a step further: this year 88 teams (boys and girls) are competing, with a total of 760 students.

On Feb. 25, champions were crowned after a long season – but, truth be told, the final results are far from the most important thing. “While it is competitive, the primary spirit of it is more about fun,” says President of the Booster Club.

That’s especially true for Willie Abt, of Glencoe, a senior who has played for this year’s champions for all four years of high school. Willie has autism, but that hasn’t affected his role on the team. His father, Ricky, said he has basically been the team’s “sixth man”. He said his fellow teammates have treated him like he’s one of the “crew”.

“We have a blast just hanging out with him every week,” said Tim Fox, one of Willie’s teammates. Ryan Hartigan, another teammate, agreed. “It’s pretty awesome capping off senior year winning it all... and just playing with Willie,” Hartigan said.

A few times a game, Willie gets an opportunity to put up a shot. In the final game, he scored two buckets, but his one shining moment came in the semifinal. He lined up a 3-pointer, “winged” it up, according to Ricky, and it went in. “Both sidelines erupted,” Ricky said. People streamed onto the court, confusing the refs, he added. “They’re basically giving this kid a chance.”

Buzzing along and a pretty successful Junior year is ending. Willie gets a ride to school every day from his buddy, Colin D, and had fun at the homecoming dance with Gabby (prettiest girl in the group). He continues to try real hard learning all he can, reading books, writing, math, computer and everyday life lesson skills. As always in the past, lots of sports keep him busy – karate, tennis, paddle tennis, basketball, swimming and hiking. Still a huge fan of trains, NASCAR, Indy cars, monster trucks, motorcycle and off-road truck racing. Lastly, Willie’s got a great bottle cap collection going. - 2014

Willie completed his freshman year at New Trier High School, played night league intramural basketball, was a member of the climbing club and lifting club, made honor roll and met a whole new group of kids. Also, he added boxing at Warehouse Gym to his long list of activities. - 2012

I wish... The students at South School in Glencoe, IL were each asked to submit one wish that they would like to have come true. While most kids wished for toys and trips, Jake Abt had wished that his little brother, Willie, didn’t scream and yell so much and was able to talk to him. - 2002
