STOP for Safety
It is about observing people while they
work, reinforcing safe work practicesand correcting unsafe acts and
conditions
STOP makes people think about safety
and talk with others about safety
-
8/13/2019 14 Th HOD Level Presentation May 2011
20/72
STOP for Safety
STOP observations are never tied up
with any disciplinary procedures.
STOP is not intended to replace our
organization's progressive discipline
system.

21/72
Why STOP for SafetySTOP for Safety program will bring
in dramatic results where the plant
hardware, systems and procedures are
sound but people need to be motivated
towards working safely.
-
8/13/2019 14 Th HOD Level Presentation May 2011
22/72
Why STOP for SafetySTOP Eliminates incidents and
injuries.
The key to eliminating incidents and
injuries is to modify behavior by
observing people as they work and
talking with them to encourage safework practices or correcting their at-risk
behaviors.
-
8/13/2019 14 Th HOD Level Presentation May 2011
23/72
STOP is based on following principles Unsafe behaviors causes injuries
Line management is accountable for safety
Standards determine performance
Silence is consent
Behaviors indicate attitude
Understanding increases motivation
Hazards can be minimized
Safety has a high priority
-
8/13/2019 14 Th HOD Level Presentation May 2011

peopleAs you enter an area, look into reactions to
your presence, which are clues to possible
unsafe acts.
Observe the evaporative acts that he
performs in the first 10 to 30 seconds

How to talk with employees who is working safely
I can learn something from youAn employee who is using safe work practices on the job
has a lot to offer. He or she can tell you about the procedures and safety
precautions needed to do the job and
what prompts him or her to follow procedures and take
precautions.
How can this job be done even more safely?
Because the employee knows the job better than anyone
else, he or she is the best one to suggest ways to
make it even safer.

Talking with employee who is working unsafely
Your attitude toward employees who are workingunsafely is important to your success.
To help develop the proper attitude, try thinking of
the situation this way:
Maybe the employee who is working unsafely has
a reason for doing so.
Your task then is to find out why the employee is
endangering himself on herself and possibly othersby committing an unsafe act.
-
8/13/2019 14 Th HOD Level Presentation May 2011
57/72
How to talk with employees who is working unsafely
Please stop what youredoing.
Imconcerned about you.
Tell me about your job.
What could happen if?
Are you having problems?
If this happened, you could be hurt.
Do you understand why following the procedures is
important?
-

58/72
How to talk with employees who is working unsafely
Please stop what youredoing. The easiest way to stop an unsafe act is to say Please stop
the job you are doing. Id like to talk with you for a moment
or Id like to talk with you for just a moment. Could you turn
off that machine and come down here?
Keep your voice calm and your tone friendly. Dont shout or
sound annoyed. If the employee objects to your interruption,
simply repeat your request: Pleasestop what you are doingso that we can talk.
-

59/72
How to talk with employees who is working unsafely

Of course, if an immediate halt poses risks, you must
take that into account. You might say, for
instance,Could we talk for a moment as soon asyouvefinished pouring that solvent?

How to talk with employees who is working unsafely
Imconcerned about you Once the employee has stopped the job, begin to talk
with him or her about it. Keep your voice calm and
friendly. Let the employee know that you are
concerned about his or her safety.
Tell me about your job.
Remember that you want to find out whether the
employee understands the risks involved--or, if he orshe does understand the risks, why the employee is
working unsafely
-
8/13/2019 14 Th HOD Level Presentation May 2011
61/72
How to talk with employees who is working unsafely
Ask questions to help the employee. For example, What could
happen if there is missing grating in the scaffold platform ?This
type of question works especially well with a new employee. He or
she can benefit by thinking through the potential safety hazards of
a job.
What could happen if?
-

62/72
How to talk with employees who is working unsafely
Are you having problems?
You might ask a question that will help you learn why the
employee is acting unsafely. In this case, you assume
the employee knows the safe way but has some
compelling reasons for doing the job differently.
For example, if you observe an employee working who is
not wearing his safety glasses, and you know he is asafe worker, you might ask, Have you been having
problems with your safety glasses?

How to talk with employees who is working unsafely
When the employee doesntknow the answer to
your questions about the safety of a job, youmight have to give him or her the information
yourself. You can simply describe the situation
and why it is unsafe.
If this happened, you could be hurt.

How to talk with employees who is working unsafely
If this happened, you could be hurt. You might say,If you keep the forks of the forklift raised
above the recommended height while youre moving,
you could puncture a barrel, Or, worse still, injure
someone. Thats why we always ask operators to lowerthe forks before moving the forklift.
Remember to give the information and assume the
employee will act in accordance with it.

How to talk with employees who is working unsafely
Do you understand why following the rule isimportant?
When you use the informing approach, you may want to finish
by checking to see if the employee understood what you
said. Checking is specially important when youretalking witha new employee or an employee who is performing a new
job. Heres what Ive done with your suggestion
Following up on the safety suggestions you receive is the
best way to show your commitment to making employees
jobs as safe as possible.

observation process.
Begin with acknowledgement of safe behavior(s)

behavior(s).
Request commitment to avoid the at-riskbehavior(s).
