DIE Bostrum Bonsmara Veiling van dr's. Gustav en Dieter Trümpelmann (pa-en-seun) op die plaas Doornhoek het rekordpryse behaal vir die Poena-geteelde diere. Die veiling het op 17 April plaasgevind. Dr. Gustav Trümpelmann teel reeds sedert 1970 Bonsmara beeste. Hy en sy pa mnr. Hans Dieter Trümpelmann se doel was om uiteindelik Poena diere te teel. Die Bonsmara-ras is ontwikkel deur prof. Jan Bonsma, op die landbounavorsingstasie, Mara, te Louis Trichardt. Die Bonsmara is oorspronklik gehoringde beeste wat verpligtend deur die Rasgenootskap se verordeninge bepaal is om onthoring te word as kalf. Die genetiesesamestelling van die Bonsmara bestaan uit 5/8ste Afrikaner en 3/8ste Hereford-Shorthorn. Sedert 1964, met die grondlegging van die Rasgenootskap, is ander Afrikanerkruise toegelaat as basiese diere. Daardeur is r a s s e s o o s d i e S i m m e n t a l e r , P inzgauer, Suid-D e v o n , S u s s e x , Rooipoenskop, die

Angus en Braunvieh se gene ook teenwoordig in die moderne Bonsmara. Die Bonsmara ras is tans die grootste geregistreerde beesras in Suid-Afrika met 130 000 wat by die SA- stamboek geregistreer is. Horingbeeste dra by tot vleisskade, beserings op die karkas en bemoeilik bestuur by lêkbakke, voerbakke en voerkrale. “Nou kan 15 beeste byvoorbeeld uit een lêkbak vreet in plaas van een gehoringde koei wat die ander diere weghou,” het dr. G. Trümpelmann gesê. Die laaste 25 jaar teel Bostrum Bonsmara met Poena-genetika. Die Poena geen is dominant in die Bos Taurus-rasse. Daar is egter ook 'n Afrikaner (Sanga) Poenageen wat nie noodwendig dominant is nie. Heterosigotiese Poenadiere teel 50-75% Poena-nageslag. Dr's Trümpelmann het daarin geslaag om

homosigotiese Poena-diere te teel. Die nageslag is dus 98% Poena. Hierdie genetiese Poenamerkers kan tans alleenlik in Australië, Frankryk en Amerika bepaal word. Dit is alles deel van die insetkoste in hierdie interessante telingsproses. Dit was 'n koste-eskalerende oefening omdat die Poena-gene dikwels minderwaardige diere voortgebring het. Die Trümpelmann's het egter daarin geslaag om tans hoogs gesogte vleisdraende Poena Bonsmaras te teel. 'n Driemanskap het hierdie jaar saam belê in HDT (Hans Dieter Trumpelmann, dr. Gustav se pa) 12-20 (die bul se nommer). Hulle is mnr. Jan Boshoff van Delmas, mnr. Martiens Aveling van Bethlehem en dr. Joggie Briedenhann van Windhoek, Namibië. Mnr. Aveling en dr. Briedenhann het ook in 2014 die duurste Poenabul vir R70 000 gekoop. Die hoogste prys op die 2015 veiling vir die Poenabul was R180 000, plus R20 000 se saadstrooitjies. Dit sal vir kunsmatige insemminasie aangewend word. Die tweede hoogste prys was R165 000 vir Poenabul HDT 12-43. Mnr. Steyn du Bruin van Belfast het R16 000 per koei en kalf betaal. Die hoogste prys vir dragtige koeie is R15 500 wat betaal is deur mnr. Ruurd van der Wal van Witrivier. Hy is die kleinseun van die baie bekende Lydenburg oud-onderwyser mnr. Willem van der Wal. Die Tr mpelmann's is baie bekende boere in die omgewing wat reeds geslagte hier boer en dr. Gustav Tr mpelmann is ook een van die plaaslike veeartse van die Lydenburg Dierespreekkamer.

Zonkies?SIEN nou die dag ’n storie in Beeld oor ’n ou wat in besit is van ’n kruising tussen ’n sebra en ’n donkie. Noem die ding glo ’n Zonkie. Nogal mooi ook!Dit het my laat dink aan die vurige debat oor gekleurde wild. ’n Gewone rooibokram is sowat R 1 200 werd, maar ’n “Sable Impala” of swartrug rooibok kan tot R 800 000 werd wees. Huh? ’n Goue Wildebees verkoop vir tot R 600 000.

Dit is die probleem. Kleurvariasies kom wel in die natuur voor en word gewoonlik veroorsaak deur ’n resessiewe geen. Hierdie diere oorleef swak in die natuur en word geteister deur siektes en word gewoonlik prooi vir ’n roofdier. So die natuur sorteer homself uit en hierdie abnormaliteite bly raar.So, omdat die “foute” van die natuur so skaars (en so mooi) is, betaal wildboere buitensporige pryse daarvoor en teel nou met die goed. Natuurbewaarders hou nie van die abnormali tei te nie . In my tyd in natuurbewaring het ons nie permitte daarvoor toegestaan nie en het hulle laat uitskiet.

Maar die geldgod is besig om te wen, want markpryse, telers en jagters skep nou ’n mark vir hierdie diere.Een gevolg van al die bastering en foutiewe gene is dat sekere wildspesies wat as “skoon of eg” beskou word, nou so skaars word dat hulle net so duur is. Skoon Swartwildebeeste (sonder blouwildebees invloed) en skoon bontebokke (sonder blesbok invloed) word nou gesog en is uiters skaars. So, die “abnormale” kleurvariasies is hier om te bly, gedryf deur die kort termyn geldmotief.Ek wonder wat die toekoms vir wildbewaring inhou as ons hierdie praktyk ongekontroleerd toelaat en steun. Ek is bevrees niks goeds nie. Noem my konserwatief en uit die oude doos, maar ek kan geensinds hierdie verwikkeling in die bedryf steun nie. Netnou is al wat in die natuur oorbly verbasterde Zonkies!

Nooi bly nooi. Iemand moet dan die eerste stap neem om die ‘nooiery’ na ’n aksie oor te sit. Hoorhierso, die woord ‘nooi’ is ’n werkwoord. Want dit is ’n aksie, ‘jy nooi iemand uit om by jou te kuier.’In sommige gevalle sê mense dit net want hulle of jy wil nie regtig saamkuier nie, dis net by wyse van spreke in party gevalle. Maar om te ‘gaan’ - na die aksie van voortgaan oor te beweeg, dis ’n ander konsep in sy geheel. Sedert Maart moet ek nou ’n ander ouderdom agter my naam skryf. Ouer mense lag want hulle kon donkie jare gelede laas so ’n ouderdom neerpen. Maar die ouderdomsgeneuk ignoreer ek en bêre dit in die diepste newels van my mensewees. Wat met my newels smokkel was al die lekker uitnodigings wat ek op my verjaardag ontvang het. Ja, en nie sommer hier of daar nie. Hoe gaaf van almal om te sê kom kuier, veral die klomp oorsee.Dit gaan gewoonlik in die sin van “koop net jou vliegkaartjie, dan kom kuier jy net”. Die kaartjies is nie goedkoop nie. As ek nou kon vlieg net waarheen ek wou sou dit eerste Australië toe gewees het na my beste universiteitsvriendin en haar man. Hulle is fotograwe aan die ‘Great Barrier Reef. “Kom net Sara (ja ek was nog altyd Sara vir Ananda), ons sal jou Fiji toe ook vat. Matt het gesê koop net die vliegkaartjie.”Die ander uitnoding van Vrydag was na Engeland, “Kom kuier Shellie, ons sal sorg, koop net die kaartjie en bietjie spending money.”Oor die naweek is ek herinner ons kan vir ’n maand in Alabama, VSA, ook gaan kuier en voor dit weer ’n draai maak in Engeland. Maar die ‘bucks’. Vriende wat ons in Kasane, Chobestreek in Botswana gemaak het drie jaar gelede het my ook Vrydag uitgenooi om tog weer op safari te kom. Jeanette Taylor se man is ’n grootwildjagter en hulle bied sewe-ster safari’s aan vir die ‘wie’s-wie’ in Europa, ek is welkom om gratis saam te gaan as ek elke aand die skottelgoed sal was. .... sal sommer net skottelgoedhandkoene ook inpak, dis al. Nou ja, met al hierdie uitnodigings kan ek my verbeelding en reisplanne lekker vleuels gee. Ek sal maar spaar, weet nie hoe lank dit sal vat nie, maar ek sal nog al hierdie toere bybring.

Sulke groot vet reis-vlooie kriewel langs my rug af en ek kan nie van die jeuk ontslae raak nie.

CRIME rates in South Africa are expected to continue their upward climb as economic and social conditions deteriorate - a trend that is already being evidenced in the sharp climb in truck and car hijackings. As economic growth contracts, unemployment figures grow and regard for the rule of law deteriorates, vehicle tracking and recovery provider Cartrack says this will drive up theft and hijackings of vehicles, trucks and cargos for sale into the illicit local and cross-border markets. Approximately 50% of stolen and hijacked vehicles are disposed of within South Africa, 30% are exported to other countries while 20% find their way into chop shops and the second hand parts market. And as long as cash-strapped consumers are prepared to look the other way to save a buck and fuel demand, criminal syndicates will continue to operate and flourish. The economics of crime: Official crime statistics show a 12.3% increase in carjacking to 11 221 reported cases, while our own truck hijackings stats increased by 16% in the last financial year to Feb 2015, which aligns with similar figures released by the Road Freight Association. The association reported 1 150 truck hijackings across the industry during the same reporting period. The escalation is rapid and significant. Impact of Economic Crisis on Crime, crime peaks during economic crises. The incidence of robbery may double, and homicide and motor vehicle theft also increase, according to the report. Using data recorded by police in 15 countries on the incidence of robbery, homicide and car theft, the report focuses on the possible effects of economic stress. In 8 of 11 countries undergoing economic upheavals, a link between economic factors and crime could be clearly established.

Submitted by NICRO (National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders):The rate of violent crime is, once again, in the spotlight as both the famous as well as ordinary members of South African communities continue to be the victims of vicious crime and suffer violent deaths.NICRO, one of the most enduring and oldest indigenous civil society organisations, which provides comprehensive crime prevention and offender reintegration services countrywide, does not deny that crime is rife in South Africa. The organisation acknowledges that South Africans are constantly exposed to crime and violence, not only as victims and witnesses but also through extensive and detailed daily media reports. Widespread media coverage notes of citizens living in a dangerous, crime-ridden society.Contract crime, which includes murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to do serious bodily harm, common and indecent assault, street muggings, car highjackings and house break-ins.There is a public outcry for the death penalty to be reinstated.South Africa had one of the highest execution rates globally. Nevertheless, imprisonment plays an important role in certain targeted cases. As a sanction it is always necessary for: Those regarded as dangerous to society, violent offenders, offenders who commit crime continuously, offenders who commit serious crime, and as protection for society.Dealing effectively with the individual and modifying behaviour, making amends to victims and communities, allowing community participation and monitoring, reparation, and offenders developing into constructive, law abiding citizens. NICRO strongly advocates a problem-solving rather than a punitive approach for certain categories of offenders, using non-custodial sentences to achieve the above objectives. Categories of offenders who could be considered should include the following:Persons suffering serious mental health problems. It is estimated that most prisoners experience some form of mental health problem, but that as many as 10% suffer a psychotic disorder. Persons suffering chemical addictions, particularly drug addictions. The link between crime and drugs is clearly in evidence, particularly in young offenders, and the need to secure treatment is more likely to contribute to a reduction in re-offending than imprisonment. First offenders who have not yet embarked on a life of crime. Offenders charged with less serious offences, and young offenders who traditionally show a high propensity for behaviour modification and reform.Examples of non-custodial sentences provided for under South African law include the use of fines, suspended sentences, postponed sentences, community service, probation and supervision, as well as attendance of treatment and educational programmes. All of these can be imposed with conditions such as attendance of treatment, education and training programmes, conditions pertaining to reparation and restoration, and specific conditions related to the individual person and case. Of particular note is a selection of tried and tested interventions which NICRO offers: Programmes aimed at perpetrators of domestic and partner violence, substance abuse programmes, programmes for sexual offenders, programmes to address poor parenting skills, programmes for young people aimed at understanding what motivates offending behaviours, ways in which to modify and change inappropriate behavioural responses, and the building of positive life skills. Anger management programmes, programmes aimed at developing problem-solving skills and building conflict resolution skills, educational programmes aimed at the acquisition of vocational and occupational skills, victim – offender mediation, and victim and community reparation. The fight against crime is a shared responsibility. Those living in crime-ridden areas have a responsibility to aid authorities in uprooting crime and not to protect or harbour criminals. To combat crime and build safe, secure communities, however, requires action from each and every South African. No amount of government action, improvement to the justice system, more effective

law enforcement or harsher sentencing and jail time will eradicate the scourge of crime in South Africa. South Africa is highly regarded as a shining example of peaceful political transition. They walk miles on mud, dirt and rocks to go to school, get water or seek medical attention, putting themselves at risk for preventable diseases and infections.”Showing our continued support for the Potato Foundation's “Barefoot Day” Entheos staff and students came to school on Friday 24th April 2015 without shoes!Children braved the cold and the metal staircase to feel what it is like to go out in the cold without shoes. Not only did they come to school barefoot – they also donated a pair of shoes to needy persons. Entheos collected 158 pairs of shoes, which will be distributed to needy families within the next few weeks.

SKODA of the VW Group has unveiled a Fabia half-ton pickup truck at the VW Worthersee motoring festival. Called the Funstar, the pick-up truck is a one-off design by some junior apprentices so don’t expect it in a showroom any time soon, but don’t forget the Fabia is essentially a rebadged Polo, so you’re essentially looking at a Volkswagen Polo half-ton bakkie.The Fabio Funstar is the result of 23 Skoda apprentices tasked to design something wacky and fun; and the stubby junior pick-up is the perfect motor for the extreme-flavoured Worthersee meeting in Austria this May, where it’ll rub shoulders with high-performance Golfs and other surprises.This flatbed is based on a cut-n-shut Fabia and while this is a cloud-cuckoo-land design exercise, we’re impressed by the ‘Skodaness’ of it. The drop-down tailgate retains the crisp and sculpted character seen on the rump of other Skodas.It might be bound for the Worthersee festival, but this Fabia is no ‘hot’ model – despite the borrowed 18-inch alloys from ‘go-faster’ Skodas and the airy steel-grey and moon-white paint scheme. FORD continued its impressive sales performance, achieving its best-ever market share and highest-ever sales for April with segment-topping volumes for two key models, including the Ford Ranger.With total sales of 6 483 units for April 2015, Ford increased its volumes by 24.5 per cent compared to the same month last year. As a result, Ford’s overall market share has climbed to 16.3 per cent. Not far behind that of Toyota, which retained its market leadership position, recording 7 916 units sold which translates to 17.7 per cent market share.Toyota noted the lower number of Quantum units bought in April and the resultant decline in the overall Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment. ‘In preparation of localising the build of Quantum Sesfikile, numbers were lower this month,’ says Calvyn Hamman, Toyota South Africa’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. MARGATE, KwaZulu-Natal - Even by biker standards, Africa Bike Week is wild.Thousands of riders descend on a small coastal resort town on the Freedom Day weekend, park the streets wall-to-wall with motorcycles for four days, shatter the nights with open pipes revving to full throttle and drink every pub in the place dry - and the locals love it!The seventh edition of Africa's biggest free motorcycle rally, hosted by Harley-Davidson and open to anything with two or three wheels, an engine and handlebars, was different only in that it was, if anything, louder than previous years and that, probably for the first time, machines bearing the host's brand were in the minority.There were bikes bearing every nameplate from Aprilia to Zong Shen - cruisers, superbikes, tourers, adventure bikes, bobbers and customs. In fact nearly all of them merited that last description - the rarest genre at Bike Week was that of motorcycles that were still as the factory built them.They ranged from 125cc sixteener machines - not all of them local, either - to a number of 2293cc Triumph Rocket 3 cruisers, with one, two, three, four or even six cylinders.The heart of the rally was on Marine Drive, where the main stage, refreshment tents, dealer displays and dozens of stalls kept bikers and non-riders alike entertained all day and late into the night.As always, the road was completely closed to four-wheeled vehicles but this year for the first time, rally organisers instituted a registration fee for riders wanting to bring their bikes on to Marine Drive, in a bid to make the area more family-friendly by reducing the number of rally-goers riding through the crowd of pedestrians who constantly thronged the area.It seemed to work; the road was as crowded as ever with a mix of biker families and locals - the latter easily distinguished by their expressions of wide-eyed wonderment - with little if any diminution in the number of superbly customised machines parked wherever space allowed.There were, however, fewer machines pushing through the crowds and fewer harassed parents rescuing small fry from having their legs scorched by too-close encounters with overheated exhaust pipes.And that, said country manager at Harley-Davidson Africa Paul de Jongh, was the whole idea; as a father himself, he wanted to make the 'biker village' a place where parents would be happy to take their children to soak up a little two-wheeled lifestyle and a whole lot of top South African music - free of charge - on the main stage.Such was his emphasis on bringing top acts such as Just Jinger and Jack Parow to Margate that he almost seemed to regard Bike Week less as a rally and more as a music festival hosted by a motorcycle company.There were some complaints about the registration fee, mostly, it seemed from riders who had no intention of parking on Marine Drive but just wanted to rev their way through the crowd calling attention to themselves, and a few from older riders who would rather have heard covers of 'biker rock' classics than original local stars.They should have gone to the Backline pub, where family band Due South was belting out standards such as Mustang Sally, Money for Nothing and Radar Love in fine style.EPICENTRE OF NOISEOne unexpected result of the new rule was to shift the epicentre of noise a hundred metres or so away to Main Road, where there a was constant procession of superbikes and big 'power cruisers', mostly Harley V-Rods and Suzuki Boulevards, many superbly customised and all running open pipes.Accelerating past the crowd, they would jerk at the throttle to make as much noise as possible, or simply sit at the side of the road holding the twist-grip against the stop, eagerly egged on by hundreds of locals, whistling and screaming every time the sound reached a new crescendo.So, on Saturday afternoon photographer Willem Law and I grabbed a couple of Harley-Davidson test bikes - a Road Glide and a Street Glide - and headed inland, cruising through the steep hills and deep valleys of the Ugu area and stopping at a spectacularly beautiful low-water bridge for a few shots of the bikes - and some much-needed R and R for our ears.But we made sure to be back in time for multiple SA trials champion Brian Capper's

astonishing stunt show, using a little Beta trials bike and a trailer that opened up into a multi-level tower 3.5 metres high, to pull off incredible jumps, mid-air turns and bunny hops, including a one-shot finale ramp-jump straight up to the top level, a platform not quite as long as the bike itself.That set the pace for the evening, as Main Road became an all-night party zone and Bike Week favourite Dilana, Taxi Violence and headline act Just Jinger blew the roof off the main stage.MASS RIDEUnderstandably, there were many bleary-eyed faces on the roof of the Shelly Centre on Sunday morning as Hibiscus Coast mayor Nomusa Mqwebu yelled, “Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!” and cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the mass ride.Hundreds of bikes, led by the mayor herself on the pillion of a Harley Triking and escorted by a grinning contingent of local law enforcement, and waved on by thousands of spectators, wound their way through Shelly Beach, Ramsgate and back to Margate, where the end point at Main and Marine became an event in itself.But that soon had to make way for the Ride-in Bike Show, as superbly customised machines in a variety of genres rolled in, each under its own steam (it's a condition of entry) to compete for 'best in show' in a number of categories judged by industry experts as well as the people's choice, by popular vote.As a tribute to the motorcycle themselves - far more than just machines to their riders - and the artists who create them, it was a fitting close to Africa Bike Week, which is after all, about the bikes.Dave Abrahams - iol.motoring.co.za

Before selling an industrial property owners need to ensure the above factors have been considered, says Bales. “Depending on the property, many of these aspects are only able to be implemented over time. IE Senior Jukskei toernooi het weer in Kroonstad plaasgevind tussen 27 en 30 April 2015. D

Soos gewoonlik het Lydenburgers en oud Lydenburgers weer deelgeneem en goed gevaar.Die ATKV Eiland Spa het vyf spanne ingeskryf en meer as 20 medaljes en trofees is individueel gewen. Op die Maandag het wedstryde tussen die spanne van verskillende dorpe plaasgevind. Dinsdag was dubbels dag, waar net twee spelers deelneem. Woensdag is daar weer teen mekaar meegeding.Spelers is gekies om aan proefwedstryde deel te neem en Lydenburg se Issie Schoeman is ook gekies. Donderdag is ’n vertoonwedstryd gespeel, waaraan oud Lydenburgers Dolf en Daan Venter deelgeneem het. Tydens die toernooi het Issie twee goue medaljes ingepalm en Faan, wat vir die eerste keer deelgeneem het, het silwer gewen.
