The Villa Miracle student execu ve team (Andre Fisher, Ben Ellis and Jonathan Wyvill) has cordially invited the Loreto Community to support them in their fundraising efforts where they are aiming to raise $5000+ for the Royal and Mater Children's Hospital. They are holding barbecues and collec on  ns at Villanova but their major event is the Bridge to Brisbane (Sunday 2 September).   

Their  goal  thus,  is  to  have  at  least  50  people  sign  up  to  Team  Villa  Miracle  on‐line  before  next  Friday, www.bridgetobrisbane.com.au, so that the various business sponsorships they are hoping to secure can be arranged to provide funds for team singlets/running tops for all runners/walkers.   

Each  runner or walker can a ract  individual sponsorship  through  the everydayhero page. So  the boys are keen  for our Loreto community to support them by running, walking, dona ng or sponsoring them for this most worthy cause. Villa Miracle badges can also be purchased for $5 and the money is due on Friday this week.  Sponsorships and dona ons paid through the everyday hero page are tax deduc ble.   For more informa on about the Villa Miracle team please see the two links below.       h p://villamiracle.weebly.com        h p://everydayhero.com.au/Villa_Miracle_2012  MASTER PLAN AND FIRST STAGE WORKS FOR 2015 The  College  Facili es Master  Plan  that  has  been  in  development  for  the  past  12 months  is  nearing  its  comple on.    In  early September,  members  of  the  College  Leadership  Team,  College  Council,  Finance  Commi ee  and  Capital  Works  &  Property Commi ee will meet with representa ves from the Na onal Loreto Educa on Council to present the final dra  of the plan before seeking final approval by year’s end. This document will thus be a blueprint for future development at the College assis ng us now and  into  the  future  to  create  an  educa onal  environment  that  reflects  the  needs  and  aspira ons  of  this  dynamic  school community.  

In the mean me, however, being conscious of the reality that the school will have an addi onal year  level (Year 7’s) arriving  in 2015,  the Capital Works & Property Commi ee have directed  the  commencement of  Schema c Designs  to ensure  the  mely development  of  the  essen al  first  stage  elements  of  the master  plan  that  are  required  for  the  accommoda on  of  increased numbers of staff and students from 2015.   These projects will be subject to final approvals from the  IBVM and also dependent upon suitable funding being achievable.  

In summary, the Stage 1, project brief for Thomson Adse  is:  

That Year 7 will be sited  in  the Mulwith Building, with Year 11 being situated  in a new building adjacent  to  the exis ng circular drop off zone off Cavendish Road. 

 

Home Economics will be expanded to include an addi onal tex le room and an addi onal hospitality kitchen.  

The  Administra on  Building  will  be  refurbished  upstairs  and  downstairs  to  form  a  modern  staff  environment  with addi onal space provision for student recep on services and also expanded staff areas for addi onal numbers of staff. 

 

A new College public recep on area, housing the finance department, uniform shop and prin ng and sick bay/first aid  is required. 

 

An expanded Tuckshop facility and improved open air café‐style ea ng area is needed.  

The Learning Support services will need to be relocated to be more central, from Mulwith into the Main classroom block, as the Mulwith offices will be required to accommodate the Year 7 Pastoral Care and Teaching and Learning team. 

 

An interim addi onal temporary drama teaching space is required.  

Provision of play spaces on hard surfaces at the base of Mulwith is required.

Last Saturday evening, Mrs Radvan, Sam Bull, Sia Cambaclis, Rebecca Newman and myself, along with our fellow La Boite Theatre student ambassadors, previewed La Boite Theatre’s latest co-production with The DeadTheatre Puppet Society - The Harbinger. This production features larger-than-life puppets along with abstract puppets, who each become the central characters in a dark, twisted tale of love, loneliness, loss and longing. When creating this work, the writers David Morton and Matthew Ryan were inspired by the style, elements and characters from existing fairytales, films and film directors, including the

Brothers Grimm Fairytales, Harry Potter, Spirited Away and Tim Burton. The performance and design elements of this production are gothic in style. The running time of the show is 90 minutes without an interval. If you are interested in attending a performance of The Harbinger or any other of La Boite Theatre’s main stage or indie productions throughout the year, please contact either myself or one of the other La Boite Theatre student ambassadors (Rebecca Newman-12 Red, Sia Cambaclis - 12 Red or Samantha Bull - 11 White) who will be able to give you significantly discounted tickets. This offer extends to parents and friends of our Loreto College community. Next week is LOTE (Languages Other Than English) Week at Loreto! However, due to the CSGSSA Athletics Carnival on Monday 20th August, LOTE Week will in fact start this Friday 17th August and continue from Tuesday 21st - Friday 24th August. The idea of LOTE Week is to provide information about the study of French, German and Japanese after Year 12 and the wide variety of ways in which these skills can be applied. Activities will take place during lunch times and after school. This Friday, Patricia Clunes from Nacel will give a presentation about international exchange programs. Next Tuesday, the girls will be given the opportunity to talk with Dr Geoff Wilkes, Director of Studies at the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies at UQ. Dr Wilkes will discuss the Diploma in Languages, Bachelor of International Studies and the Brisbane Languages Alliance between the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technolo-gy and Griffith University. Anna Simpson (Loreto 2011) will provide the student perspective of tertiary languages study in a presentation on Thursday. These lunch time presentations will primarily interest LOTE students in Years 10-12 but younger girls are also welcome to attend. On Wednesday, we will have a “Learn a LOTE at Lunch time” session with games and next Friday there will be a trivia quiz and dance off to French, German and Japanese music. Everyone is welcome and prizes will be awarded. The program for LOTE Week is outlined on the following page. LOTE Movie Afternoons As part of LOTE Week, we will be hosting French, German and Japanese film afternoons from 3:30pm – 6:00pm as outlined. Your Languages teacher will give you a slip to complete to indicate if you will be attending these film afternoons. As snacks will be provided, please return this slip to your Languages teacher by Friday 17th August in order to assist with catering. All girls are welcome to come irrelevant of whether or not they study a LOTE, as each film has English subtitles. Here is an overview of the three films with their respective ratings:

Tuesday 21st August – German Film Afternoon: Keinohrhasen – Rabbit Without Ears (2007) German with English subtitles Runnng Time: 111 minutes Rating: M Gossip-columnist Ludo (Til Schweiger) finds himself sentenced to three-hundred hours of community service after he literally crashes a private celebrity party. The work is at a children's day-centre and while the job's fine, it is his bad luck that the person in charge is a woman whom he used to play endless practical jokes on when they were at school; she hasn't forgotten and is prepared to use her new-found power to get her own back. Anna (Nora Tschirner) finds however that, like the children, she's warming to him. (imdb.com). This popular romantic comedy, in the style of Notting Hill, was a huge hit in Germany.

Wednesday 22nd August – French Film Afternoon: L’Arnacoeur – Heartbreaker (2010) French with English subtitles Running time: 101 minutes Rating: M

Heartbreaker is an action-packed romantic comedy pairing two of France's biggest young stars: Romain Duris and actress/singer Vanessa Paradis. A smash hit in France, the film was also featured at the Tribeca Film Festival. Charming, funny and effortlessly cool, Alex (Duris) is a professional heartbreaker who for a fee can turn any husband, fiance or boyfriend into an ex. Alex has one ironclad rule: He only breaks up couples where the woman is unhappy. His latest job will put that rule to the test. The target is Juliette, a beautiful heiress who is set to marry the man of her dreams. However, will he discover to his own cost that when it comes to love, the perfect plan doesn't exist?

Thursday 23rd August – Japanese Film Afternoon: Laputa - Castle in The sky Japanese with English subtitles Running time: 125 minutes Rating: G In a world very similar to our own, young Pazu works at a mine, assisting Mr. Duffy with the heavy machinery. One night he sees something shining slowly descending from the sky. It is a young girl named Sheeta, who is wearing a pendant of rare levitation stone. Both a band of pirates led by their mother Dola, and the military led by Colonel Muska are after the girl, trying to find the secret of Laputa, the legendary flying island and Pazu finds himself thrown into a merry mess of trouble as the two groups struggle for the girl and the island. `âá|v axãá Parents information for QCMF Could all parents please be aware, particularly parents of new students, of the following information for this weekend.

1. QCMF is run at 4 venues, all accessible from Villanova College. On site are three areas, Goold Hall (closest to Eigth Avenue), the Veritas Building (in the centre of the campus) and the Augustine Centre (closest to Sixth Avenue/Dowar Street). Nearby is St James Church (Old Cleveland Road). It is a 5-10 minute walk from the Villanova venues to St James Church. Please check the attached Loreto Performance Schedule for venues for each of our groups.

2. Parking at all venues is street parking only and can therefore be a little difficult to find at times. Please allow enough time to park and walk up to the venue.

3. It is vital that you arrive at the venue at least 10 minutes before your daughter’s scheduled performance time, as au-dience members are only allowed entry to the venues between performing schools. Arriving late frequently causes parents to miss performances as no access to venues is allowed once a school has started playing.

4. Entry is by ticket only purchased at the venue on the day! But the ticket cost is only $5/day and it is worth buying a weekend pass ($10) if your daughter is in 2 or more sections. This IS NOT fundraising by Villanova College– the money directly finances the costs of running this fantastic event!

5. there are plenty of food/drink options available on site if you need refreshments.

QCMF – Urgent Plea Villanova College is desperate for volunteer helpers for this weekend’s Festival. They are on the verge of cancelling some sections as they simply cannot staff them. If you have any free time between Thursday and Saturday this week and would be willing to assist for even one shift, they would be very appreciative! If you can help, please email the Volunteer Co-ordinator Janette Henderson at [email protected] as soon as possible. The QCMF Festival provides a major perfor-mance focus for not just our own students but all Catholic schools in south east Queensland and is deserving of our sup-port. Please sign up using the email above, as the QCMF website server is currently down.

Guitar Ensemble Two Don’t forget that as your performance time is very soon after school on Thursday 16 August, the College will organise a bus to transport you directly to Villanova at the end of the day. Please make sure you bring your Guitar, Music, Black Uniform and footstool to school with you Thursday this week (Wednesday is a public holiday!). Directly after homeroom you should change into your performance uniform and then meet in the Mary Ward Centre mezzanine by 3:30 pm. You are to organise your own transport home after the performance.

QCMF Uniform expectations The college’s uniform expectations are very simple – all groups, except guitars, perform in regular school uniform with navy blue stockings (not socks). Blazers and school pullovers may be worn on the day for warmth but will be left in the warm-up area and not actually worn on stage. Guitar Ensembles will wear black pants (not jeans), plain black button-up, collared shirt with ¾ or full length sleeve (no short sleeves), black socks or stockings and black shoes. Guitarists may also wear their own choice of coloured scarf.

Thanks Thank you to all the students (String Quartet, Jazz Ensemble, Chorale, Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Concert Band One) who have performed at the College Open Day, Mt Carmel Fete and school assemblies over the past two weeks. Your contribution to the success of these events is appreciated!

Celtic Storm The end-of-year concert for our Senior Choir and Symphony Orchestra students will be two performances at the “Celtic Storm” event at Villanova College on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 October. If you saw last year’s Broadway show, then you will know that not only will this be a fantastic event, but tickets WILL SELL OUT FAST. Don’t miss your daughter’s performing or the fantastic guests, award winning Irish Band the “Barleyshakes”. Tickets go on sale Friday 31st August at 6 am on www.trybooking.com.

_|uÜtÜç axãá Year 8 Reading Olympics 6-20th August Congratulations to our winner in the Semi Finals: Georgia - 8R. The Finals will be announced next Monday 20th, the beginning of Book Week. Its theme is “Champions Read”. Please check that your daughter is reading every night and providing an accurate tally. Also, sign the Parents’ Verification this weekend. Your daughter should bring this Tally Sheet with your two signatures to her English class next Monday. We hope that the Reading Olympics encourages and broadens reading tastes. ctÜ~|Çz exÅ|ÇwxÜ                                                                                                                                                                                   Parents are reminded of traffic and parking rules that apply around the College particularly at drop-off and pick-up times. Two rules of particular importance are:

The speed limit between 7.00am and 9.00am and between 2.00pm and 4.00pm is 40 km/h.

The maximum length of stay in drop-off zones is 2 minutes during drop-off and pick –up times.

The safety of students and staff and the wider community is of paramount importance to the College and accordingly your compliance with all traffic and parking rules is sought. We also encourage all parents to be considerate of our neighbours when in the vicinity of the College grounds. Do not queue across driveways or stand your vehicle in a manner that could endanger the safety of otherS and do not park your vehicle in “No Standing” zones.

Please be aware that at times the College requests Queensland Police to monitor compliance with the rules and offending parents have been issued with fines. Years 8 - 10 Dance ‘Safari Around the World’ is the theme for the dance which will be held on Saturday August 25, from 7 - 10pm. This dance is sure to be a lot of fun for our younger students. We need adult supervision so please consider helping by completing the roster attached to the newsletter. Your assistance is valued by your daughters as it makes the night able to run smoothly. Profits are going to the Sports Support Group and the Music Support Group to assist their costs. We have a few spaces to fill so if you haven’t completed the reply form, now is the time! Father’s Day Breakfast On Friday 31 August, from 7am onwards, Loreto fathers are invited to a Father’s Day breakfast with their daughters. Come and dine on bacon and egg burgers, fresh fruit, juice, tea or coffee and meet other fathers. We simply ask for a gold coin donation please. The breakfast will be held outside the Mary Ward Centre, near the pool. This was a very successful event last year and we hope that we will see lots of students bringing their Dads to school for breakfast this year. fv|xÇvx axãá This week is National Science Week so there are many exciting activities to get involved in over the next few days. There is an interactive display set up in our labs to enable our girls to see our most impressive equipment in use. There are opportunities to use chemistry to make sherbet and slime and there will be some fantastic explosions. We are running a stained glass window design competition to highlight Science Week. The winning designs for each year level will be reflective of the work being done this term in Science classes and put on display around the College. Due to the landing of the Curiosity probe on Mars last week, there is a focus on space science and there will be some spectacular rocket launches at lunch time. Students and their families are welcome to attend an Astronomy Night tonight at 6.30pm. The evening will comprise of some short movies showing the Curiosity mission and the scale of the known universe followed by some star gazing through our high powered telescope. In keeping with the astronomical theme, hot milo, milky ways and mars bars will be supplied for supper. Attendees should bring a blanket/warm clothes, a mug for hot chocolate/milo and binoculars if available. Smart phones with astro apps would also be useful. The evening should wrap up by approxi-mately 8.30pm. fÑÉÜàá WxÑtÜàÅxÇà Gym News Last Thursday 9th August, Loreto received a number of new machine weights. The equipment was donated to the College but the person who instigated, organised, and facilitated this process was Gary Pettiford (Sarah’s father). Gary organised four helpers and a truck to retrieve the equipment form the Sunshine Coast and bring it to Loreto. As you can imagine the equipment was very heavy and it took all the manpower needed to move it. The machine weights are in good condition and now provide more exercise options. On behalf of the College, I would like to thank Gary for his efforts and I am sure that the staff and students will continue to gain benefits both now and in the future. CSGSSA Athletics Loreto College will be taking up to 80 athletes to compete in the Catholic Secondary Girls School Sport competition on Monday 20nd August 2012. The athletes will catch a bus at 7.15am to QE11 on the day of the carnival. A letter will be distributed to the Athletics Team including program details this week. The Year 9 and Year 11s will be spectators on the day of the carnival and will be transported out to the QE11 Athletics track at ANZ stadium. The students will leave school directly after Assembly and return to school around 2.45pm to take their normal buses home. School will finish at normal time for all students including the athletes. All students are expected to be there and wear full school uniform including their hat. It is strongly advised that the girls bring a packed lunch for the day. If you have any further enquiries please don’t hesitate to contact the Year Coordinators or Mrs Meg Stevens in the Sport Office. AFL Competition Senior Team Report

On Thursday 9th August, 26 girls from Year 10,11 and 12 combined to form Loreto’s inaugural senior AFL side. There was an air of excitement on the bus and great enthusiasm displayed in each match. Loreto played 5 consecutive matches on the day against: John Paul College, Victoria Points SHS, Beaudesert SHS, Springwood SHS, Mt. Gravatt SHS and Shailer Park SHS.The girls played with determination all day to produce 1 win, a loss by 1 point and 3 losses. The overall improvement in skills and teamwork was very pleasing to watch throughout the day. Congratulations to all girls who competed with tremendous spirit on the day. Junior Team Report Well done to all the Year 8 and 9’s who played in the Junior Loreto AFL competition. Three games were played on the day and all convincingly won by the Loreto Junior AFL team. Game One was played against Victoria Point SHS with a convincing 5 goals 1 behind (31 points) to Victoria Points 4 point result. Even though this was a convincing win, the Loreto team started slowly and worked mainly on the handball and tackling. In Game Two against Beaudesert SHS, the players picked up a bit of pace and started to use the field and kicking to their advantage to run away with an astounding win of some 50 points and qualify to play in the final round. The final round was played against Victoria Point SHS. In the final game the Loreto team streaked away, with many scoring kicks both goals and behinds. Even though Victoria Point SHS never gave up, they were unable to match the determination and skill of the Loreto team. In the final match, all players worked hard displaying excellent handball, kicking, tackling and use of the ground to dominate the game from the beginning to end. Although the Junior Loreto AFL team qualified to move on to the regional competition, other commitments at school has meant they will need to withdraw. Well done to all of the players who participated on the day in the Junior Team and for displaying team spirit and respecting players from other teams. Alan Lane-Richardson – AFL Manager/Teacher

Last week from Monday 6th August, Loreto experienced our first ever “Olympic week” organized by the Student Representative Council (SRC). Each Homeroom was assigned a certain country as their team. It was fantastic to see not only the students, but the staff as well showing great participation and friendly competitiveness with the mini activities and games held to delegate points. Every homeroom was so beautifully decorated that travelling from one classroom to another felt like a journey to a new country. The enthusiasm portrayed throughout the school was a lovely way to create a bigger sense of community, interaction between the different year levels, and embracing multiculturalism. A big thank you goes to Mrs Gore for all her hard work in ensuring the organisation of the week and good luck to the girls who have to clean up the countless amounts of balloons and streamers. Trains can’t swerve and by the time the driver can see you it is already too late for the train to stop in time.

Disobeying railway crossing signals or trespassing on railway property is not only dangerous, but is also illegal.

Keep yourself safe

Only cross railway tracks at designated crossings where it is safe and legal to do so.

At railway crossings, obey all signs and signals. Listen for a warning bell or train whistle, watch for flashing lights and always look both ways.

When riding your bike, walk it across the tracks when crossing at a marked railway crossing.
