Director’s Message

Dear Carbondale Citizens, Local citizen desire and demand for recreational facilities and services has in-creased tremendously in the 13 years I’ve been here. Parks & Recreation has become an important and growing component within our community with more citizen requests being made for new programs and park amenities. The challenge for myself, the Carbondale Parks & Recreation Commission, and the Town Board of Trustees is to prioritize the community’s recreational needs and to fi nd the funding to meet those needs. While some people may view the value of recreation and leisure services as intrinsic and subjective in nature, the reality is that recreation and leisure play are social, fi tness, and wellness goods that are needed in life. It’s also important to recognize the intangible benefi ts and economic values that park and recreation services and facilities can provide. For example, while it costs thousands of dollars per year to care for one incarcerated youth delinquent offender, saving a single life from becoming delinquent justifi es many times over the cost of operation of a swimming pool or recreation center. A child who has recreational activities to engage in is more likely to be a healthy, well-balanced, law-abiding adolescent than a youth who lacks recreational opportunities. The Town of Carbondale Gateway River Park & RV Campground, bike paths and trails, athletic fi elds, rodeo arena, Farmers Market, recreation center, swimming pool, com-munity garden, nature (dog) park, skateboard park, the new North Face Bike Park, along with Town funding assistance of special events, all provide a stimulus to our local economy and tourism. There is a measure of economic gain within Carbondale due to these recre-ational amenities that motels, restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, rafting & fi shing outfi tters, sporting goods stores, and other businesses benefi t from. This boost to Carbondale’s private sector economy, where local businesses fl ourish or new businesses are added, can result in a bigger and broader municipal tax base. The Town’s past development of local recreation and park infrastructure has resulted in ex-panded visitor tourism that has played an important role within the overall local economy. Please feel free to call or stop by to visit with me if you have ideas on how we can continue to enhance our local economy through parks and recreation services.

The Town of Carbondale has recently completed the two-acre North Face Bike Park, adding another rec-reational amenity to our quiver and enhancing our town’s love affair with anything with two wheels. The impetus to create this no-cost amenity was spearheaded by volunteer citizens who serve on the Town’s Bike, Pedestrian and Trails Commission. They embarked on a two year fundrais-ing campaign and were successful at raising the $95,000 that a park of this caliber costs. The Town of Carbondale re-ceived $45,000 in funding from Great Outdoors Colorado, $25,000 from a Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District grant, $10,000 in Town funding, $10,000 from Alpine Bank, and $5,000 in community donations. These dona-tions have brought to fruition a quality bike park designed for all ages, skills and abilities. The company that was hired to build the park, DirtSculpt, lived up to their name, and transformed the existing earth into an amazing biking experience. DirtSculpt utilized the entire property to provide riders with a mountain bike skills course with challenging uphill switchbacks, and a “flow line” descent with a wall ride and rollers built into the hill side. Other features include two pump tracks that have multiple lines that beckon to be explored. Then to the south of the custom built shade structure one encounters a well designed progression of jump lines, satisfying begin-ner riders to world class dirt jumpers. The park is surrounded by a perimeter trail that can be used as a part of a loop for local cyclocross races. Words can’t do it justice, just go ride it! Now that we have a world class bike park , we need to take care of it. Please educate yourself on the park rules and abide by them. Take action and sign up to be a part of a volunteer group that will help with the ongoing maintenance of the park. Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan Underway

The Town of Carbondale Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan was adopted in August 2004 and has served the community well for the past 10 years. Because of accomplishing and completing many of the important goals and objectives reflected within that plan, and because of the need for a new guiding document to reflect the current vision of the community, the Town has hired a leading national consulting firm, Design Workshop, to work with town staff, government leaders, and local citizens to update the Master Plan.

The Town of Carbondale is expected to see substantial growth and infill over the next decade, and the primary goal of a Master Plan update is to provide a long-range planning and implementation document to guide the future development of the parks, recreation, and trails system within the Town. With an updated plan, government leaders and staff will understand the community’s priorities in determining what resources are needed to acquire park and open space parcels, create new outdoor recreation amenities, build new trails, and preserve and improve existing outdoor facilities.

Town staff and government leaders believe that one of the ways local citizens manage their lives and strengthen their families is through recreation, and that it plays an important role within the social fabric of Carbondale. Accordingly, they feel that at the heart of our community’s commitment to recreation, there must be Community Involvement & Community Cooperation.

The Master Plan will be comprehensive in that it will involve Community and Cooperation to determine and prioritize the development of future recreation, park, and trail amenities. Beginning in September and over the next 3 months, the Town’s master plan process will incorporate a citizen survey, public citizen meetings, and recreational special interest group stakeholder meetings.

Upon completion of this citizen driven and generated Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan, Town government leaders will utilize this document to provide them with direction on the vision its local citizens have regarding which parks and recreation needs should be a priority.

As this plan evolves in the months ahead, please get involved. Complete the community survey, attend the meetings, and help shape the future of Carbondale. Remember, it’s Community and Cooperation that makes Carbondale such a special place!
