Base Product- DTM Builder The 12d Model base product contains all the options necessary to produce a digital

terrain model (DTM or TIN), including fast triangulation, contouring and sectioningroutines. It is graphically interactive to give immediate feedback to the user.

The 12d Model base product was written from theground up for the civil and surveying market. Workflow follows traditional engineering ideas, making itvery easy to learn and use. The base includes thestring types 2d, 3d, 4d, interface, pipe, text, alignmentand super to allow accurate civil engineering andsurvey modelling. Alignment strings provideindependent horizontal and vertical geometry andare created and edited interactively on plan andsection views.

The base includes ability to do simple road and raildesigns, building platforms, storage ponds, dams andcanals while the Detailed Alignment Design module isavailable for more complex work. When adjustmentsare made to the strings or templates, a simple recalcfacility automatically removes redundant informationand replaces it with the updated geometry andvolumes. This is particularly useful when many trialsare needed to determine the best position for thefinal design.

Three types of views – plan, section and perspective– can be created by the user for examining, constructingand editing information. All views are automaticallylinked so that data can be viewed and manipulatedusing more than one view. The 12d Model sectionview extends the concept of a section to include acorridor either side of the string being profiled. Anystrings in the corridor can be displayed in the sectionview. Hence potential clashes between the profilestring and utilities are easy to detect. The 12d Model‘super string’ provides a simple tool for 3d modellingof utilities such as telephone lines, electricity cables,gas lines and drainage and water pipes.

Plots and reports of any of the data in the views canbe created at any time. Plots can be output in a varietyof formats including Windows printers and DWG &DXF. Plot parameters are provided for tailoring longand cross section plots. Final quality plots are producedfrom 12d Model, including title blocks, true type fonts,line styles and symbols.

A powerful object based programming language isincluded in the base product. With this language, userscan build their own options using 12d Model’s vastlibrary of graphics and analysis commands or bydefining their own routines.

Raw data fromsurvey instrumentsis downloaded by12d Model or readfrom a PC Card andconverted to 12dModel’s ‘Field File’,ready for reduction.

During reduction, amapping file is usedto apply line stylesand symbols, colors and line weights, and to separatethe data into models (layers), all based on your fieldcoding.

Field data is automatically ‘strung’ based on field codes.Coding by Field Templates is supported, allowingdramatic increases in field productivity for string basedsurveys.

Field pickup includes arcs, pipes and culverts.

Corrections to field data (typically mis-coding or mis-numbering of strings) are done on screen, and thecorrections are written back to the Field File. Thisprovides an audit trail of the office work, and allowsan UNDO facility to be provided. The originalobservations are always available.

12d includes both solar and star reductions withoutrequiring almanac details.

Geodetic calculations include interactive reporting oflongitude and latitude, Easting and Northing, projectionbearing and distance, and ellipsoid distance. Fullgeodetic calculations are available in reduction.

Traverse adjustment by Transit, Bowditch, Crandall,Compass or Least Squares.

Zone to Zone and general conversions betweenLatitude/Longitude and Universal Transverse Mercator(UTM) projections, Transverse Mercator and most otherprojections.

Transformations include affine, 2D Helmert, sevenparameters and NTv2 Grids. These include convertingbetween AMG/ISG co-ordinates and MGA co-ordinatesfor Australia and converting between old and newCircuits for New Zealand.

Elevation (height) adjustments including a simpleconstant, user defined planes or difference surfaces.

Setout points, triangulations, centre line alignmentsand design cross sections can be created and uploadedto Total Stations and GPS controllers. 12d Modelprovides seamless interface with TP Setout and TPStakeout and full support for Trimble Link.

A full suite of COGO functions is included.

Complete plan drawings including line styles, symbols,hatching and title blocks can be produced. Extensivedrafting operations are available so a separate CADsystem is not required.

Traverse SpreadsheetsPlane and projection traversespreadsheets exist for enteringcadastral work by either usingthe keyboard or selecting fromthe screen. Data entered at thekeyboard is immediatelydisplayed on the screen.Sophisticated traversespreadsheet drafting eliminatesmost, if not all, manual drafting.Line work is automaticallydrawn in grid (Easting and Northing) co-ordinates butis labelled with observed bearings and distances withuser defined rounding to suit most authorities.Adjustments include Bowditch, compass, transit andleast squares. There is no limit on the number oftraverse spreadsheets that can be created and re-edited. In the Lot Check option, existing plandimensions are entered and used to check areacalculations as well as ensuring lots are closed toprescribed limits.

Estate LotsHouse lots are created for residential developmentsby a variety of methods including parallel, perpendicularand swinging sides. Minimum frontages and areas canbe preserved. Existing lots can be subdivided. Arcscan be subdivided by chords or tangents accordingto either number, length or an arc-to-chord tolerance.Lots are numbered and can be given user definedtypes such as lot, park or road. Lot labelling includesareas, numbers, types, labelling the side of lots withbearings and distances (with user defined rounding),and creating short segment tables for lines and/orarcs. Lot reports include areas sorted by lot number,lot type, or area. Lots can be coloured by area.Functions exist to create point numbers and reportsfor setting out the lots.

Volumetrics,Tin Analysis & Earthworks

12d Model provides a very systematic approach to volume calculations with goodprovision for independent calculation checks. It is a general-purpose volumecomputation routine suitable for a wide variety of applications.

The triangulation analysis module has options tocalculate surface area, depth contours (isopachs),the intersection of triangulations, and options forslope, aspect and viewshed analysis. Colour codingcan be used for the slope and aspect analysis. Landuse studies, landscaping and other civil design taskscan benefit from this comprehensive suite oftriangulation analysis options.

This module is used for calculating earthworks volumeswithin a user defined polygon using either end area orexact calculations. Volumes can be calculated betweena triangulated model and a fixed height or betweentwo triangulated models. Reports of cut and fill areasand volumes are given on a section by section basisusing the end area method, a height range basis bythe cell method, or on a depth range basis using exactvolumes. Depth volumes can be colour coded forvalidation and plots.

Detailed Alignment Design

Detailed Alignment Design Alignment design adds another dimension to 12d Model, providing the tools to

carry out full range civil design work, from basic roads to multi lane highways withmajor intersections and exits.

The Detailed Alignment Design module provides designcapability and string modifier operations to allowinteractive design of the most complex civil situations.

The modifiers include:• modifying design cross-fall, road width and string

height between chainages

• projecting the cross-fall between two existing strings

• widening out to an existing string

• creating cross sections at user specified chainages

• modifying the height and/or offset of the hinge string(allows easy design of roads with offset crown).

A separate Kerb return function uses the grades andcross-falls at the ends of the kerb return to automaticallycreate vertical geometry. This enables the user torapidly create and edit kerb return alignments andgives the ability to immediately see the effects of theentire intersection design.

Decisions can be used in the design cross section toallow, among other things, complicated cut and fillrequirements (multiple strata), decisions based ondepth below one or more strata or strings, multi-leveldecisions (i.e. depth decisions, etc) and extendedbattering including repetitive battering, fixed widthbatters and battering relative to a string or strata.

Alignment design is fully interactive, changes can bemade with design at any stage, these changes will beautomatically reflected in other segments of yourprojects (i.e. volume calculations, cut & fill sections).Many operators use a three dimensional perspectiveview to check their design as it progresses.

Urban Drainage

Urban Drainage The 12d Model substantially reduces the time required to design a complete drainage

network, and increases design quality through holistic handling of design surfaces,utilities (e.g. water, gas, electricity), clash checking and trench quantities.

12d is the tool to create your drainage network. Layoutyour drainage network on screen or by importing datafrom 12d drawings and spreadsheets. When layingdown the network, 12d obeys minimum pipe coverand grading. Powerful graphics helps avoid serviceclashes.

12d measures catchment areas, selects pit inletcapacities, and determines bypass routes.

The drainage module interfaces withhydrology/hydraulic design and analysis programsincluding Drains, ILSAX, MicroDrainage, PC Drain,RAT 2000, Spreadsheets, XP-SWMM, and XP-STORM.This combines the "real world" power of 12d’s terrainmodelling with specialised hydraulic design packages.

Analysis results can be brought back into 12d withhydraulic data going directly onto your drainage profile(long section) plots. Drainage profile drawings arecomplete with hydraulic grade line, pipe flows, velocity,and construction data. You select the data to include.

12d creates plan drawings withpipes to scale or stylized usingline types for pipe sizes/classes.Automatically generate "intelligent"title blocks to plot directly to yourplotter, complete with your logosand auto incremented drawing numbers. The userdetermines the look of the drawings.

Excavation volumes and pipe system quantities canbe calculated within 12d. User defined templates areapplied for trench shapes that vary with depth andpipe size. Excavation volumes may be summarisedby depth (volumetrics module). Pipe schedules arecategorised by pipe types, sizes and/or depths.You specify the ranges and groupings.

Construction schedules can be printed or the dataexported to spreadsheets including road chainages,easting, northing, invert levels, diameters, pit types,and remarks. You can also use the powerful 12dprogramming language to create your own reports.

Flooded widths and roadway depths are showngraphically in 12d. 12d calculates the width of flowusing normal depth calculations. For more detailedanalysis, HEC RAS projects can be created withdischarge results from your hydraulic design program.

Surcharge volumes from drainage pits are difficult toconceptualize. 12d displays surcharge volumes asthe flooded area and identifies where spill from theflooded area will occur. Volumes are read directly fromyour design program/spreadsheet, or they can bemanually entered.

12d Model’s Rivers modules offer river engineers andmappers new levels of flexibility, power, andproductivity. 12d Model substantially reducesmodelling setup time for river, flood plain, and openchannel studies.

Start with survey data, airborne laser scanning (LIDAR),cross-section data, USGS DEM data, CAD data, or acombination of these to create a ground surface foryour river. Include buildings, roads, and channelimprovements and design.

12d Model efficiently handles several million points,making it ideal for the dense data that results fromLIDAR, photogrammetry and traditional surveys oflarge areas.

For additional clarity, aerial photographs can be usedas backdrops for your work.

The user specifies the river centre line, overbanks andcross-section (straight line or bent) locations. 12dModel automatically determines river levees andexports the 3d river system to programs such as HECRAS, Mike 11, UNET, ISIS and XP SWMM. ISIS andXP SWMM storage/reservoirs receive stage-area curvesdirectly from the surface tin.

The water levels are read from the output files or userscan create their own flood level files to map observed

floods. Calculated flood limits can be shown in plan,section or perspective views. Flood inundation mapswith depth contours and coloring by depth rangescan be quickly and easily prepared.

Engineering type drawings (river profiles and crosssections) showing bed levels and multiple water levelprofiles are produced. Drawings are complete with"intelligent" title blocks containing both custom andautomatically generated data.

3D images of flood levels and ‘flights’ down the riverare recorded in AVI movie format. Movies of the projectshowing flood limits and buildings are perfect forpublic presentations.

Full design features for engineered waterways as wellas volume calculation for storage areas, excavationsand embankments are also available.

Visualisation

Visualisation The Visualisation module quickly produces realistic perspective scenes of your

design. Surfaces can be shaded, photos draped onto the terrain, textures applied tosurfaces and shapes extruded along strings.

A rendered perspective view or drive through providesa realistic three dimensional image which is often theeasiest way to convey a design to a non-technicalaudience.

The Visualisation module has a large number of toolsto quickly build and display realistic scenes of terrainand design data.

Aerial photographs can be draped over triangulatedsurfaces to produce realistic backgrounds for therenderings.

Shading and textures are used on the new design toimprove realism.

A library of objects such as trees, lights, guard rails,fences and walls is supplied with 12d Model so thatnew users can immediately produce results. Newobjects can be created using faces and extrusions tocover almost all situations.

Routines to create road line markings, signs andbillboards complete the overall effect.

Drives down roads and fly overs can be written to Avifiles for future replaying and use in presentations.

The Visualisation module uses Windows OpenGL torender the perspective scene.

Input / Output

Input /Output 12d Model offers comprehensive input /output options for seamless transfer

of data with third party packages.

ArcView Shape Files Input/OutputThe ArcView module will read ArcView shape, shx anddbf files into 12d Model. The mapping of any attributesfound in the ArcView file can be specified by the user.

Because the ArcView shape format has no stringname, colour, model or layer information this data canbe passed as attributes when writing data from 12dModel to ArcView files.

DWG/DXF Input/OutputThe DWG/DXF reader recognises most AutoCADentities, including blocks, and makes appropriateinterpretation in terms of 12d Model elements. TheDWG/DXF output module write out plots, threedimensional data and triangles in DWG/DXF format.

Genio Input/OutputThe Genio input/output module is used to read andwrite Moss GENIO data files. The Genio readerrecognises the two default Genio input formats (version6 and 7) and the Genio options 001 and 003 used forformat variations. Moss free format (using commasand the "field-number = "syntax) is allowed. 2d, 3d,4d, 6d, and G Strings are recognised (with namespreserved) as well as triangulations. Genio modelscan be read directly into 12d Model models, or thegenio data can be mapped with users defined models,colours, breakline type and linestyles.

LandXML Input/OutputLandXML is a developing standard for transferringsome geometric data between software packages.12d Model endeavours to support this evolvingstandard.

MapInfo Mif/Tab Input/OutputThe MapInfo module reads MapInfo Mif/MID or Tabfiles into 12d Model. The mapping of attributes inthese files is under user control.

Microstation (dgn) Input/OutputThe Microstation input/output module is used to readspecific information from a Microstation .dgn file andto write out plots, three dimensional data and trianglesdirectly to Microstation .dgn files.

Geocomp InputThe Geocomp reader reads and interprets the datacontained in the Geocomp points and strings files.12d Model macros are also provided to read Geocomplot files.

CivilCad InputThe CivilCad reader reads and interprets the datacontained in the CivilCad ascii file format. Both Version4 and Version 5 CivilCad ascii formats are supported.

SDRMap & DesignThe SDRMap & Design reader allows existing SDRMap& Design users to import their existing data into 12dModel.

AMG to MGAThis module handles conversions between theAustralian AGD datum and GDA datum usingparameters or NTv2 Grids. That is, it can convertbetween AMG/ISG co-ordinates and the new MGAco-ordinates. The Survey module includes thisfunctionality but the AMG to MGA module may alsobe purchased separately.

DigitizingThis module is used to capture existing drawings foruse as base data. Optional "stream mode" allows fastcapture of strings, especially contours. A filter may beapplied at capture time, preventing clustered pointsin the captured data.

The digitizing module is especially useful for capturingcontour maps rapidly, thus allowing a DTM to beformed and design work to commence.

Estate LotsWith this module, users can create and labelsubdivision (estate) lots. This functionality is includedin the Survey module but may also be purchasedseparately. For more details on Estate Lots pleasesee the Survey section of this brochure.

LINZ LandonlineLandonline is Land Information New Zealand’selectronic database of land title and survey information.With this module, data extracted from Landonline canbe used in 12d traverse spreadsheets without theneed for re-keying information. Cadastral data preparedin 12d traverse spreadsheets can be electronicallylodged with Landonline.

Pavement Overlay OptimizerOverlay of asphalt pavement is used to extend thelife of existing roads.

12d Model uses a sophisticated optimization routineto determine the most efficient placement of materialto achieve design overlay thickness while providingimprovements to ride quality.

Road edges are allowed to ‘flap’ within a specifiedcrossfall range so that best use is made of availableresources.

An affine transformation is calculated using controlpoints, and is applied as the data is captured, correctingfor both map scale and paper distortions.

Digitizer button functions are completely userassignable, giving operators the freedom to configurethe system to their liking.

Additional Modules

PipelineThis module is used to support the design of majorpipelines of any diameter (for example, 2000 mm) andany length.

The module allows for the extraction of long sectionsand cross sections against the digital terrain modelfor the proposed route, plus all the obstructions thatrun parallel or cross a corridor of user given width oneither side of the centre line of the route.

The joint deflection for pipes of a user nominatedlength is calculated and interactively displayed alongthe pipeline.

Earthwork volumes for trenches can be calculatedalong the selected design line.

The special pipeline longitudinal plots show the existingsurface, design pipeline, depth of cut or fill to pipeinvert, percentage grades and vertical curve data ordeflection angles, and all obstructions.

Sewer - Waste Water ReticulationThe Sewer module is an extension of the drainagemodule and supports the design of gravity operatedwaste water reticulation systems, typically thoserequired for new land subdivisions and developmentprojects.

The user enters proposed manholes, pipelines andend of line points. Obstructions which pass over, underor parallel to the design lines within a user specifiedcorridor about the design line will be shown on longand cross section views.

When satisfied with the design invert levels, connectionsfrom the design line to the individual house blocks canbe added and reported on.

Earthwork volumes for trenches can be calculatedalong the selected design line.

The special waste water reticulation longitudinal plotsshow existing surface, manholes, design pipelines,pipe grades, property connection points and allobstructions. Long section plots to the MelbourneWater standard are included.

All 12d Model purchasers have the option of a

Maintenance Agreement covering software support

and updates. Maintenance agreements are typically

in blocks of 12 months and in that time the

agreement covers all electronic copies of revised

versions of 12d Model containing updates and

improvements as and when the software becomes

commercially available. It also covers telephone

and email technical support. Customers on

maintenance will incur no additional license charges

for the provision of the updates of 12d Model

although a charge may be incurred for the supply

of CDs and printed material. Customers on

maintenance are also eligible for discounts on

additional copies of 12d Model.
