We have just celebrated Kew College’s 60 th birthday in real style. Mrs Ausn organised a brilliant day full of acvies for all the children. Aſter a rousing and beaufully played musi- cal introducon by the Wind Band first thing in the morning, they have pied themselves against the climbing wall (and the bouldering wall for the smaller children), cuddled tarantu- las and snakes and listened to a fantasc A Cappella group from Yale University who wowed us with their incredible harmonies and vocal percussion. The older children took part in workshops with performers from ‘Stomp’, who showed them just how versale sink plung- ers can be and had them wreaking havoc with dustbins and hose pipes. Please don’t be sur- prised if they try these things out at home – it is all part of their educaon! We also had a wonderful drumming and dancing workshop from Ghana and African mask-making. The children have thrown themselves into all these events with their usual enthusiasm and en- ergy. Several of our visitors have commented on how well behaved and aenve the chil- dren have been. Many thanks are due to the parents for producing such beauful and imaginave cup cakes (all blue, of course), to all the staff for their help in seng up and running the day and to Mr Schmidt for his inspired decoraons at the front of the school. One of my favourite mo- ments at Kew College is seeing the children’s faces as they arrive on the School Birthday and see the school dressed up for the day. A huge thank you also to Miss Sarah, who has been up late and also VERY early to receive our entertainers. In parcular, congratulaons to Mrs Ausn for masterminding such a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day. On Monday we had our final assembly for Médecins sans Fronères, where the Kew College Friends’ representaves presented the charity with a splendid cheque for £5,000. It was clear from the talk we were given that this money will be well targeted and help to make many people’s lives beer. Thank you all for your generosity. Anne Dobell

Dear Parents, HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY, KEW COLLEGE! We have just celebrated Kew College’s 60th birthday in real style. Mrs Austin organised a brilliant day full of activities for all the children. After a rousing and beautifully played musi-cal introduction by the Wind Band first thing in the morning, they have pitted themselves against the climbing wall (and the bouldering wall for the smaller children), cuddled tarantu-las and snakes and listened to a fantastic A Cappella group from Yale University who wowed us with their incredible harmonies and vocal percussion. The older children took part in workshops with performers from ‘Stomp’, who showed them just how versatile sink plung-ers can be and had them wreaking havoc with dustbins and hose pipes. Please don’t be sur-prised if they try these things out at home – it is all part of their education! We also had a wonderful drumming and dancing workshop from Ghana and African mask-making. The children have thrown themselves into all these events with their usual enthusiasm and en-ergy. Several of our visitors have commented on how well behaved and attentive the chil-dren have been. Many thanks are due to the parents for producing such beautiful and imaginative cup cakes (all blue, of course), to all the staff for their help in setting up and running the day and to Mr Schmidt for his inspired decorations at the front of the school. One of my favourite mo-ments at Kew College is seeing the children’s faces as they arrive on the School Birthday and see the school dressed up for the day. A huge thank you also to Miss Sarah, who has been up late and also VERY early to receive our entertainers. In particular, congratulations to Mrs Austin for masterminding such a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day. On Monday we had our final assembly for Médecins sans Frontières, where the Kew College Friends’ representatives presented the charity with a splendid cheque for £5,000. It was clear from the talk we were given that this money will be well targeted and help to make many people’s lives better. Thank you all for your generosity. Anne Dobell

Year 1 concert on Tuesday, 26th March 2013 at 3.30 p.m. in the Sedum All parents of Year 1 children are welcome to this concert on Tuesday 26th March at 3.30pm. It is being held in the Sedum at 3.30pm and parents are to enter from Leyborne Park Road Entrance. It will be finished by 4.15 p.m. Children to look smart with neat hair and polished shoes and blazers. This is an opportunity for all the children who are learning instruments to show off their talents, and all the children will be showing their expertise as singers, having learnt many songs from a Penguin themed musical, which complemented the school's Antarctica theme. If your child has a sibling in the school from Years 3—6 we will ensure that they are delivered to the Sedum for the start of the concert I look forward to seeing you all. Gillian Thompson

On Wednesday 20th March, Year 6 went on an absorbing and educational visit to Holley Lodge for Junior Citizen. In groups of 4-5, they worked around a series of activities which enabled them to de-velop essential life skills in preparation for leaving Kew College and moving on to their senior school of choice. These included: using public transport, fire awareness, water safety on the river, crossing the road, First Aid, crime prevention and dealing with a traffic accident involving a car and a bicycle. The children’s thoughts on their day: Edward: ‘I learnt not to touch somebody who needed rescuing in the water; as the dangers to the rescuer might result in you being pulled in and drowning yourself!” Ben: “I enjoyed the road traffic accident the most as I liked working as part of a team to find evi-

dence to solve the mystery.”

KEW COLLEGE SWIMMING Some of our star swimmers swam in the Richmond Borough Finals on Wednesday. All our swimmers had qualified for the Independent schools finals and some went on to qualify for the Borough finals, in which all schools in the Borough compete. There were some great results including the boys finishing second in the whole Borough in the Medley Relay and the girls showing their best ever results with second place overall out of the Independent schools and third place overall in the entire Borough! Two trophies! Josh and Betsy in year 3 swam magnificently and both reached the Borough finals, coming 4th and 6th respectively. Ella and Benedict in year 4 faced some tough competition in their races but both swam their personal bests. In year 5, Jessica reached the Borough finals coming 2nd in the front crawl and 6th in the breastroke, Suki reached the Borough finals for backstroke coming 5th, and Ted came 3rd in the front crawl and 6th in the breaststroke Borough finals. The girls relay teams made up of Maddy C, Freya, Lily, Suki, Jessica and, at the last minute, Betsy all received medals in the Borough finals coming 4th in the medley and 5th in the freestyle. The boys relay teams of Frederick, George, Patrick, Charlie & Ted swam valiantly and achieved a fantastic result in the medley. Not everything went to plan, but the children took the rough with the smooth with maturity and good humour. Mrs Dobell watched from the spectators gallery and came to tell us how proud she was of the children and their determi-nation and good sportsmanship.

Galas next term London Schools Primary Championships - Friday 26 April 4.30pm at Bute House. Year 6 A&B and Year 5 A team only. The permission slips for this will go out next week. There is talk of a parents race this year - we would need four parents to swim for each house. Let me know if you are interested!?! Clare Buckle

Year 3 A Team Netball Match v St James

On Tuesday 19th March Year 3 played a match against St James. We won the first centre pass and kept the ball in our half with lots of passing between us. St James then intercepted the ball and scored two goals be-fore the whistle blew for half time. We all came together and Miss Sidey gave us some words of encourage-ment. The sun came out for the second half and we strode out determined to do our best. After some good moving and passing the ball was passed to Phoebe C who scored a great goal. We raced back to the centre and it wasn’t long before our second goal was brilliantly shot by Eve. All too soon the whistle blew for the end and the final score was a 2-2 a draw. Really well played to Nikita, Emily, Phoebe C, Eve, Amelie and Lucy. I think we need to work on our intercepting and getting into spaces quicker. Sophie 3B

Year 3 Netball Match v St James On Tuesday 19th March Kew College played a netball match against St James. St James had the ball first. The ball whizzed down the court and St James scored their first goal. Then we started with the ball and got it go-ing, but St James snatched it and the ball zoomed up in the direction of our goal-post. With some great de-fending from our side we got the ball, but St James got it back and scored again. They started, yet we man-aged to get the ball from them. We were close to scoring a goal when the full-time whistle blew. The end score was 2-0 to St James. Next time we should improve on spacing out more. Well done to Chloe, Grace, Ava, Catrin, Sophia, Tara and Rosie. Rosie 3B

Year 5 Hockey match v Fulham Prep On Thursday the Year 5 girls played hockey matches against Fulham Prep, for some of us it was our very first game. Mrs tabor encouraged us all to have a good go, and everyone played well! Milly scored a goal and we stopped their attack, so we won 1-0. Well done the team! Amelia 5L

Year 5 trip to The Mandir Temple On Monday the 18th March, Year 5 visited the Mandir Temple in London. As soon as the temple came into view everyone was amazed. In front of us was a towering white marble temple. I was shocked at the time it took to build it, three years, my guess would have been at least a dec-ade. Once we were inside and had taken off our shoes, our tour guide took us through a passage and up some steps. Now we were in the main part of the Temple, called the Shrine. After staring at the carvings and Dome in awe, we went off in groups to look at the statues of the Gods. Every night the Sadhus dress the statues in their night cloths and in the morning dress them in a differ-ent robe from the day before. Next we went out of the Shrine and into an exhibition all about Hinduism. In the exhibition we watched a short clip about how the Temple was made. Then we walked to the Prayer room on the ground floor where there were two rugs, one for the girls and one for the boys. After asking the Tour Guide some questions we went back up to the Shrine and took part in a service. There we got blessed by the Gods by putting both our hands over the Arti Lamp and moving our hands over our heads. By the time we were back in the coach, I didn’t want to leave although I was hungry since we had not had lunch. Finally the coach turned the corner and the temple was lost from view. By Alice 5L

Year 1 Outing to the Marianne North Gallery In Geography, we have been studying various places around the world with a particular focus on the

Polar Regions. We decided to visit the Marianne North Gallery in Kew Gardens to support this topic.

Marianne North was an intrepid Victorian explorer who painted over 700 pictures of what she wit-

nessed. The children were fascinated by her wonderful pictures. They worked in small teams to look

carefully around the gallery, find particular images and answer questions about them. The weather

was good, enabling us to eat our snacks and enjoy a recreational break in the gardens.
