RUNNING:

1 On pipe rack or rig floor, make up Bottom Guide Sub and Top Crossover Sub (if needed) on packer using 36 and Cheater Pipe. Then make up storm valve in top of tool with 36 and cheater pipeon bottom sub of valve (Caution: Do not torque through any of the valve or packer internal connections. This connection will have to be made up with tongs when picked up).

2 Pick up and make up single joint of pipe in top of valve. Pick up storm packer assembly with elevators using joint of pipe as lift sub. Make up bottom connection of guide sub to drill pipe below packer with tongs. Make up guide sub to bottom sub of packer with tongs.

3 Pick up assembly with single joint and slack off to Top sub of packer and make up with tongs Storm valve to Packer and Drill pipe to Storm valve holding back up on top and rotating tight below rotary. (NOTE: DO NOT MAKE UP CONNECTIONS ABOVE PACKER ABOVE THE ROTARY AS THIS WILL OVER TIGHTEN STORM VALVE STINGER ASSEMBLY. MAKE UP AND BREAK STORM VALVE USING 36 SEVERAL TIMES TO TEST RELEASE MAXIMUM TORQUE 500 FT/LBS.)

4 Do not put slips on body of tool with weight of drill pipe hanging below (this will shift weight of drill pipe from mandrel to outer body and shear “J” mechanism).

5 Check tool to insure that it is not in set position. Turn 1/3 right-hand rotation and push up on drag block and slip assembly, and slips will engage cone. Release slip assembly and let it re-jay to bottom sub and attempt to push up; slips will not engage cone. Tool is ready to start in hole.

6 Run plug to setting depth (take precautions going through preventers and wellhead so plug will not hang up). Run real slow.

7 Care should be taken while running not to apply left torque to the drill pipe string before setting the Storm Packer. Once in position, the packer is ready to be set, Pick up the string approximately 1 foot. Set slip on drill pipe and use rotary to apply 1 to several turns to right depending on depth and deviation of well. If rig has Top Drive DO NOT SET SLIPS AND USE TOP DRIVE TO MAKE TURNS. Slack off on drill string until the packer starts taking weight. (usually takes about 1 foot ). Pick up on Drill pipe just enough to remove slips and Slack off the string weight onto the packer slowly.

8 To disconnect the Top sub from storm valve, pick up 1,000 to 3,000 lbs over string weight of drill pipe above the valve. Apply left hand torque to break the right hand acme thread and continue rotating to back out the Top Sub and close the valve. Approximately 14 round at valve.

9 Pull out of hole. If time and condition permit, the assembly may be pressure tested at this time to maximum of 1,000 psi differential pressure from the top. Too high a differential from above will cause the plug to shear out.

RETRIEVING

1 Run the drill pipe back in with Storm Valve Top Sub on the bottom (use the proper size gauge ring for the casing size). Tag the valve and set approximately 1,000lbs. onto it. Be sure and have rig safety valve on top of drill pipe.

2 Turn drill pipe to right to re-engage drill pipe (turn with chain tongs or TOP DRIVE if equipped) while maintaining the weight on the valve. After drill pipe is made up with additional right-hand rotation, with 4 rounds of rotation, will move off seat to let pressure equalize. A total of 14 rounds will bottom out. (Do not use rotary). Place TIW valve on string and be prepared to handle pressure on drill pipe when opening equalizing sub.

3 To unseat packer. Pick up the weight of total string and ½ foot, the bypass will opened and be prepared to handle pressure on casing. Continue to pick up on the packer to release and packer will return to running position.

4 Pull out of hole slowly, especially when plug comes back through BOP stack.

VERY IMPORTANT FACTS WHEN RUNNING PACKER:

1 Tongs and back-up directly onto the immediate Box and Pin subs being tightened. Do not torque through any of the valve or packer internal connection.

2 Do not set slips around packer with drill pipe hanging below.

3 Make sure tool is not in set position before starting in hole. With tool hanging in rotary, pick up slip assembly and it should not come up on cone.

4 Run slowly through BOP stack and wellhead, making sure it will not hang-up. Bottom guide will help guide it through.

Model A Storm Valve

The Storm valve is a combination Back Pressure valve and Safety Joint that is run above a Storm Packer,in order to provide well control protection during a temporary abandonment of the well, without having topull the drill pipe or tubing. The Storm Valve allows the packers to be set and then permits disconnectionand retrieval of the drill pipe or tubing and the upper sub of the valve, while at the same time automaticallyclosing the Storm Valve, isolating the drill pipe below the Storm Packer.

Note:This Storm Valve is designed to be used with right hand set compression type packers only.

RunningThe Storm Valve is made up directly onto the top sub of the Storm Packer. The 4-1/2” I.F. connections areto be tightened with 22,800 ft-lbs. torque, (3-1/2” I.F. — 10,500 to 11,500 ft-lbs. torque)

Warning:Tongs and back-ups must be on the immediate Box and Pin Subs being tightened. Do not

torque through any of the valve or packer internal connections.

The two-start right acme connection (marker hand tight ) between the Top Sub and the Housing is to betightened at this time to about 500 ft-lbs. of torque (equivalent to 200 lb. man on 36” wrench). This is theconnection that will be broken and backed off downhole, so do not overtighten. Care should be takenwhile running not to apply left hand torque to the drill pipe string before setting the Storm Packer. Once inposition, the packer is ready to be set. Pick up the drill string approximately 1 foot.

Apply and hold right hand torque while moving back down with the drill string until the packer startstaking weight (usually 1 to 2 feet depending on the packer model). Slack off the string weight onto thepacker. To disconnect the Top Sub from the valve, pick up 1,000 to 3,000 lbs. over the string weight of the drill pipe above the valve. Apply left hand torque to break the two-start righthand acme thread and continue rotating to back out the Top Sub and close the valve. The drill pipe and Top Sub are retrieved and the B.O.P.’s closed. If time and conditions permit, the assembly may be pressure tested at this time to a maximum of 1,000 psi differential pressure fromthe top. Too high a differential from above will cause the Plug to shear out.

RetrievingRun the drill pipe back in with the Storm Valve Top Sub on the bottom (use the proper size Gauge Ringfor casing size). Tag the valve and set approximately 1,000 lbs. onto it and slowly rotate the pipe to theright while maintaining the weight on the valve. This will make up the acme thread and begin to openthe valve.

Warning:A valve should be installed on the string at surface before reconnection in case pressure has

built up in the pipe below the valve.

The valve will open before the Top Sub shoulders, but continue rotating until the pipe torques up. Donot attempt to unset the packer until any pressure in the drill string is under control.

To unset the Storm Packer, the drill pipe is picked up, opening the bypass in the packer. Before doingthis, insure the annulus is closed off at surface in case pressure has built up below the packer. After anypressure has been equalized, continue to pick up and pull out of the hole.

The Storm Valve incorporates an emergency pump-out plug which can be sheared out of the valve withdifferential pressure from above (it is not necessary for the Top Sub to be attached). The plug will shearout and move down the drill string.

Note:Once the plug is out, the valve cannot be closed.

Tubing Tester

The Tubing Tester is a full open tool which is used to pressure test the tubingfor leaks. The tubing tester is designed to run with any of our set-down typepackers which are compatible.

The tubing tester has a maximum pressure differential of 10,000 PSI but otherfactors should be taken into consideration regarding pressures, such as theother tools run with the tester and the tubing strength.

OperationRun the tubing tester in on tubing above the Packer or any other tool which iscompatible. The tubing tester is run in with the flapper in the open position. Theflapper is closed to test the tubing. This is done by rotating the tubing 1-1/2turns to the right at the tool and pick up. After testing is complete, the tester islocked open by straight set down weight.

Note: When pulling high tension on the tester, the tester should be left in thetest position.

AS1-X Retrievable Production Packer

The AS1-X Retrievable Production Packer effectively meets severalrequirements for zone isolation, injection, pumping and production. Fullopening gives unrestricted flow and allows the passage of wireline tools andother accessories. A mechanical lock-set action holds substantial pressuresfrom above or below the packer, whether the packer is left in tension, compression or neutral. A large internal bypass reduces the swabbing effectwhen running or retrieving. The bypass closes upon setting the packer. Whenreleasing, the bypass opens first to equalize pressures before releasing theupper slips. The AS1-X Retrievable Production Packer has a rotationalsafety release feature, or an optional adjustable straight pull shear safetyrelease.

The AS1-X Retrievable Production Packer can be set by compression or with tension, thus making it ideal for shallow wells requiring the use offiberglass tubing.

Product Features• Available with Ecner Array• Patented releasing slip system• Bypass Valve below upper slips so the debris is washed

from slips when valve is opened• Bypass valve opens before hold down is released• Can be set with tension for use in shallow wells• No tension or compression required to hold tool in place after set• 1/4 turn right-hand set, right-hand release• Safety release (optional)

“FH” Hydrostatic/Hydraulic Packer

The “FH” is a Hydrostatic and/or Hydraulic Set Packer that allows the tubingto be left in a compression or neutral condition.

Applications• Multi-zone production in crooked or deviated holes not suitable for

mechanical packers• Installations where the wellhead is flanged up before the packer is set

Features• No tubing manipulation required• Withstands high hydrostatic pressures• Hydraulic set for low hydrostatic head wells• Locked in pack-off force• No mandrel movement during setting• Straight pull or optional rotational release• Hydraulic hold-down for differential pressure from below• Parts interchangeable with other manufacturers

Setting ProcedureThe “FH” Hydrostatic/Hydraulic Packer is set by pressuring the tubing to obtaina differential at the packer. To accomplish this, a means of temporarilyplugging the tubing below the packer must be provided.

Releasing ProcedureThe standard “FH” is a Hydrostatic and/or Hydraulic Set Packer and isequipped with 30,000 lbs. shear ring for a straight upstrain release. Othervalues of shear rings are available (20,000 to 40,000 lbs. for size 4-1/2” and20,000 to 50,000 lbs. for all sizes 5-1/2” thru 9-5/8”).

Hydrow II Dual String Packer

The Hydrow II is a hydraulic set, mechanically held dual string productionpacker which is normally run above a single hydraulic set or wireline set sealbore packer. The short length of the Hydrow II makes it ideally suited fordeviated wells or doglegs. Also, since there is no tubing manipulation requiredto set the packer, the well head can be installed and flanged up before settingthe packer.

The Hydrow II is available with short or long string setting capabilities and avariety of tubing connections. The packer has been carefully designed formaximum flexibility when it comes to submersible pump applications. Bychanging only a few parts, the Hydrow II can be modified from a high pressureproduction packer to a packer installation for submersible pump.

The Hydrow II has a patented sequential upper slip releasing system that isdesigned so that each slip is released individually to reduce the pull requiredto release the packer. The angles on the penetration of the slip body result insmooth release from the casing.

The Hydrow II has several seal options for the short string. J-Latch or colletlatch tops are available with various types of seal assemblies.

Product Features• Short, compact, and economical• No hydraulic hold down buttons• Shear release easily adjusted• Heavily loaded slip system for easy release• Sequential upper slip on low pressure side of

the critical O-rings after setting• Hydraulic set to allow flanging-up before setting packer• Differential pressure helps to improve rubber pack-off

Snap Series (I,II) Packers

The Snap Series Packers are compression set tools which only requirestraight set down weight to pack off. They are generally run above anotherpacker for selective production, treating or injection in multiple zone completions. They are also used to isolate casing holes or perforations.

The Snap I Packer is the basic packer of the series. This has upper or lowerslips and should be used only where intermediate differential pressures areexpected.

The Snap II Packer is a modification of Snap I Packer with the addition ofupper hold down slips for use in applications where high differential pressureis expected from below the packer.

The Snap Series is designed with an internal latch which prevents the packersfrom presetting while running in the hole. The tools are keyed to allow tubingtorque in either direction.

Product Features• Internal By-pass• Equalizing Valve• Internal latch to prevent presetting• Pressure compensating piston on Snap II

Tubing Pressure Packer and Casing Packer

Tubing Pressure PackerThe Tubing Pressure Packer is designed to handle a variety of downholeneeds in slim hole casing. It is used for acidizing, fracturing and water injectionwhere moderate pressure is expected. The packer may be run in eithertension or compression.

Casing PackerThe Casing Packer can be set in open hole or in the casing string. It is oftenrun beneath casing holes to isolate water so the well can be pumped or gasvented. The packer can be set in tension or compression for shutting off water, for injection or for various cementing procedures. When run in compressionand in conjunction with special release sub, the packer can be used as a linerhanger.

Deeply cut, widely spaced wickers allow the packer to set, whether it is in openhole or in corroded casing. The Casing Packer is also available for open holeswith a softer dual packing element system. This system provides a morereliable pack-off in irregular formations and a trouble free release withoutswabbing.

Features• Full opening casing size• Deep cut wickers• Compression or tension set• Casing can be run below packer• Can be used as a liner hanger• Available in open hole version

D & DB Seal Bore Packers

The Seal Bore Packers are highly versatile tools which may be set on wireline, mechanically or hydraulically. They are frequently used on stimulation jobs whereexcessively high pressure and temperatures are encountered. The Seal BorePackers also have several options that allow the packer to be converted to a bridgeplug by installing a Knock-Out plug, Pump-Out Plug or Screw Out Plug to isolate alower zone. The zone may later be produced by removing the plug with theproduction string and landing the seals.

Optional bottoms are available which enable the use of a full line of packer accessoryequipment. There is also a full line of seals to select from including Kalrez, Aflas,Viton, Teflon, Ryton and our own standard Nitrile compound. The DB Packerincorporates the same features as the standard Type D Packer with the addition of alarge upper seal bore. This features allows the largest possible ID through the packerand seals for completions requiring large tubing sizes.

Product Features• Wireline, mechanical or hydraulic setting options• Metal back-up system expands to casing ID to

Extreme Service Permanent Packer

The ES Extreme ServicePermanent Production Packer

The ES Seal Assembly Is "service matched" to today's deeper, hotter well environments. The ES Packer is designed to withstand full differential pressure with the seal assembly latched into the packer bore. The 450º F. Temperature rating insures suitability with operating conditions in deeper wells. The ES provides a unique slip arrangement, utilizing dual upper and lower slips and cones to more effectively distribute pressure induced forces into the supporting casing. Each set of slips is one-piece construction with inserts strategically positioned to provide maximum packer retention under extreme loads. The lower slips are secured to the packer mandrel through a threaded connection to avoid damage while the packer is going into the hole.

The ES packing element design incorporates positive anti-extrusion components to eliminate element extrusion under pressure and temperature extremes. Non-elastomer sealing mechanisms at threaded connections insure maximum pressure performance. A large bore through the mandrel and a complete line of accessories make the ES packer an excellent choice for high-flow production applications or situations demanding high volume sand fracs.

ES Seal Assembly

The ES Seal Assembly is a matched performance design accessory for the ES packer. This seal assembly features a jay lug locking system capable of withstanding the loads induced by the full pressure capability of the ES packer. The jay lug lock, combined with an autojay packer top provides easy seal assembly stabbing and facilitates space out of the production tubing string. A half turn to the right, at the packer, quickly releases the seal assembly.

ES Seal Assembly seal units are full performance seals rated for 450º F at 15,000 psi pressure conditions. A full range of elastomers is available for special wellbore conditions and fluids. Additional seal units can be added when the packer is run with seal bore extensions below the packer mandrel. A half-mule shoe, bottom guide aids in stabbing.

Mill-Out ExtensionMill-out extensions are used in installations where floating seals are requiredbut allow a packer with a larger inside diameter to accept a “packer plucker”in the event the packer is milled out.

Concentric CouplingsConcentric couplings are used to connect seal bore extensions to obtainmore seal bore length.

Bottoms

Wireline Guide BottomThis is the standard bottom which serves as a wireline re-entry guide anddoes not accommodate extensions.

Tubing Adapter BottomAvailable with choice of tubing threads for running tail pipe or mill-outextensions below the packer.

Concentric BottomUsed for running a seal bore extension below the packer.

Knock-out Plug BottomUsed for running a knock-out plug in the packer. When the packer is set, thepacker serves as a bridge plug until the plug is knocked out with theproduction string.

Screw-Out Plug Bottom Used for running a screw-out plug in the packer. After being set, the packerserves as a bridge plug until the plug is screwed out of shoe.

Flapper BottomThe Flapper bottom contains a spring loaded flapper type back pressurevalve which holds pressure from below only. The valve is opened when theproduction string is stung into the packer and automatically closes when thestring is retrieved.

Pump-Out PlugThe Pump-out seals off pressure from below so that the packer can serve asa bridge plug. The pump-out plug can be removed by pump pressure to allowa full opening in the packer.

Seal Bore Tubing Accessories (cont)

Available in a variety of Seal Systems and alloy materials to accommodate

various well conditions. It is important to know the well conditions and work

to be performed in order to choose the proper seal system. Consideration

should be given to temperature (minimum and maximum), concentration of

hostile elements (H 2S, C0 2, etc.), seal movement and maximum pressure

differential. These factors will determine the seal type, metal material and

accessories to be utilized. For all seal bore tubing accessories,

standardization of threads, seal diameters and seal lengths have been

carefully considered in the design to maximize interchangeability with

competitive seal bore equipment.

All steel components for the seal bore tubing accessories are manufactured

to meet N.A.C.E. specifications MR-O1 75 for H 2S service. The accessories

are also available in several types of material with the following three as

an example:

• High strength alloy steel - High pressure applications

• 9CR-I MO or 13CR-1 MO alloy steel - H2S and C02 applications

• Incoloy 925 alloy steel - Severe corrosion applications

Two basic seal types are currently available:• Elastomer bonded to metal commonly known as molded seals and

available in Nitrile, Viton, Flourel, EPDM, ECO and HSN materials.

• Chevron type seals commonly known as V-rings (not recommended to

move out of seal bore) and available in Nitrile, Viton, Flourel, Teflon,

Aflas, Ryton and Kalrez materials.

Temperature, hostile elements, seal movement and pressure differential are

parameters to consider when selecting seal types.

Using Bleeder Wrench, slowly turn Stemto LEFT until gas pressure escapes through the side vent. The Stem will shoulder at Retainer Nut.

5. Alternate gas pressure bleed-off method: Place chain tongs around Pressure Chamber. Position bleeder holein Pressure Chamber facing away from you. SLOWLY unscrew the Firing Head until gas pressure bleeds off.DO NOT BACK-OFF FIRING HEAD FROM PRESSURE CHAMBER MORE THAN 1-1/4”.

6. Alternate gas pressure bleed-off method: Should pressure not bleed off as explained in steps 4 and 5 anothermethod is available. Place chain tongs around Upper Cylinder and position bleeder hole in Cylinder pointingaway from you. SLOWLY unscrew the Pressure Chamber until gas pressure bleeds off. DO NOT BACK-OFFPRESSURE CHAMBER FROM UPPER CYLINDER MORE THAN 1-1/4”.

7. If gas pressure still does not bleed off, back off Firing Head exactly 1-1/4” from Pressure Chamber and drivenail into bleeder hole in Pressure Chamber. POSITIVELY STAND CLEAR OF BLEEDER HOLE DURINGTHIS PROCEDURE.

8. CAUTION: ALL PESSURIZED GAS MUST BE BLED OFF BEFORE FURTHER DIASSSEMBLY IS BE-GUN. THE TWO HALVES OF THE TOOL WILL BLOW APART.

9. Unscrew and remove Firing Head. Unscrew and remove Pressure Chamber and Upper Cylinder.

10. Push Upper Piston out lower end of Upper Cylinder. Remove O-rings from Pressure Chamber, Upper Piston, and Firing Head.

Disassemble remainder of setting assembly components. Thoroughly remove power charge debris by washingall parts with kerosene. Apply light coat of oil to all parts to prevent rust from forming.

Model “BP” wireline pressure setting tools are compact tools insidewhich the ignition and burning of a pyrotechnic power charge (manufac-tured by TITAN SPECIALTIES, Pampa,Texas) produces gas pressurethat elongates the tool. This provides the stroke and force necessary toset and anchor conventional bridge plugs, packers, and cement retain-ers provided by various manufacturers. The tools feature pressure balanced top and bottom pistons to eliminatepresetting of the mentioned products caused by high hydrostatic wellpressure.

OPERATION: An electrically actuated high temperature rated igniter (also manufac-tured by TITAN SPECIALTIES) located at the upper end of the tool isignited and produces a flash flame which, in turn, ignites the power chargethat is located directly below the igniter. The power charge, which isconstructed of carefully controlled combustible elements, begins a slowburn lasting approximately 30 seconds. The resultant gas derived fromthe burning charge gradually builds to high pressure and causes the toolto elongate. The pressurized gas migrates down the center of the top piston and outinto an annular cavity formed between the top piston and connector sub.The pressure acting on this area drives the outside of the tool (consistingof top and bottom cylinders) downward while the top and bottom pistonsremain stationary. This motion anchors the bridge plug to the casing i.d.then pulls the shear stud of the bridge plug apart, freeing the setting toolfor removal from the well. An oil damper system is built into the tool to control the speed at whichthe tool strokes. As the tool elongates, this oil is forced through anannular orifice and out of the tool at a controlled rate and prevents thetool from stroking too fast, causing damage to the tool once the shearstud has parted. NOTE: IT IS MANDATORY THAT THE TOOL BE FILLED TO CAPACITYWITH OIL EACH USE OR DAMAGE TO THE TOOL WILL RESULT.Excess oil will be purged out automatically during assembly. Likewise, oil expansion caused by high well temperature during running will bepurged in the same manner. In wells where hydrostatic pressure is less than 10,000 psi, all toolsizes are available with manual bleeder valve assemblies. This valve pro-vides a safe, easy method of bleeding trapped gas pressure from the toolbefore disassembly is begun. When bottom hole pressures exceeding10,000 psi are to be encountered, the manual bleeder valve and its corre-sponding sub are replaced by a portless sub. Bleeding is then accom-plished by backing the firing head out of the setting tool. Both methodsof bleeding pressure are illustrated in the disassembly steps found laterin this manual.

PRESSURE BLEEDING LOCATIONS

1-1/2” - 2-1/8” O.D. SETTING TOOLS

A-O-T-E, Inc. wireline pressure setting tools in o.d. sizes 1-1/2” through 2-1/8” do not containa Baker style manual bleeder valve assembly (A-O-T-E pt. no. WST-2125-142) except whenspecifically ordered.

Two locations for bleeding pressure from tools less manual bleed valves are illustrated in drawing“A”. The preferred method of bleeding pressure is to hold wrench on “GO” 1-1/2” o.d. high pressurefiring adapter while turning the setting tool counter clockwise. Pressure will begin to bleed as soon asthe lower o-ring on the firing adapter is uncovered. Ample threads are provided on the firing adapter.Should a bridge occur and pressure stops bleeding, screw the tool clockwise then begin the procedureagain.

The alternate method shown in drawing “A” is accomplished by holding wrench on shear sub (see parts list)while turning the top cylinder counter clockwise. The top piston will back out of shear suband pressure will begin to bleed. Again, if a bridge occurs screw the tool clockwise then begin the procedureagain.

An indication that most of pressure has safely bled off is when the tool partially closes. This indicates that thetrapped compressed atmosphere in bottom cylinder is overcoming what little gas pressure remains of the

power charge.
