CALL TO WORSHIP: This is the season of holy waiting. We wait for the One on whom the Spirit of the Holy God rests. We wait for the child to be born, who will reign over us this day and always. We wait for the darkness to grow brighter with the light of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Come, let us worship God!
HYMN OF PRAISE: “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming”................................... ES IST EIN’ ROS’
Led by Brynn Terry (Music and lyrics are on the last page of the Order of Worship)
LIGHTING THE FOURTH ADVENT CANDLE ~ THE CANDLE OF LOVE: The Kazanjian Family—Christian, Meghan, Noah, Sadie, and Ben CALL TO CONFESSION (Pastor): “O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today.” Let us confess our sins before God, first silently, and then by joining together in our unison prayer of confession. PRAYER OF CONFESSION (In Unison): Gracious God, whose presence is with us even now, we confess our fear and our doubt. Forgive us for all the ways we miss your signs and wonders among us. You provide endless possibilities; yet, we are too busy focusing on our own needs and desires to see them. Grant us eyes to see anew your inbreaking light, and give us the strength and courage to embrace your presence among us. For we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Responsive): Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel.
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE: Sara Boninu A READING FROM THE GOSPELS (Luke 1:26-35, 38): 26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 38Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. SERMON: Underdogs and Outsiders: Women of Advent—Mary, the Mother of Jesus Rev. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________TEXT: German carol; stanzas 1, 2 trans. Theodore Baker, 1894, alt.; stanza 3 trans. Harriet Knuth Spaeth, 1985, alt.MUSIC: Alte Catholische Geistliche Kirchengesäng, 1599; arr. Michael Praetorius, 1609
ES IST EIN’ ROS’7.6.7.6.6.7.6
Although the early copies of this 15th-century German text include many more stanzas than are printed here, this simpler, shorter form has much to commend it. This early 17th-century harmonization of the traditionalchorale melody invites and rewards singing in parts.
