WARRANTY

This Reichert product is warranted by Leica Inc.(“Leica”) against defective material and workmanshipunder normal use for a period of one year from thedate of invoice to the original purchaser. (Anauthorized dealer shall not be considered an originalpurchaser.) Under this warranty, Leica’s soleobligation is to repair or replace the defective part orproduct at Leica’s discretion.

This warranty applies to new products and does notapply to a product which has been tampered with,altered in any way, misused, damaged by accident ornegligence, or which has the serial number removed,altered or effaced. Nor shall this warranty beextended to a product installed or operated in amanner not in accordance with the applicableReichert instruction manual, nor to a product whichhas been sold, serviced, installed or repaired otherthan by a Leica factory, Technical Service Center, orauthorized Reichert Ophthalmic Instrument Dealer.

Lamps, bulbs, charts, cards and other expendableitems are not covered by this warranty.

All claims under this warranty must be in writingdirected to the Leica factory, Technical ServiceCenter, or authorized instrument dealer making theoriginal sale and must be accompanied by a copy ofthe purchaser’s invoice.

This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties impliedor expressed. All implied warranties ofmerchantability or fitness for a particular use arehereby disclaimed. No representative or otherperson is authorized to make any other obligations forLeica.

Leica shall not be liable for any special, incidental, orconsequent damages for any negligence, breach ofwarranty, strict liability or any other damagesresulting from or relating to design, manufacture,sale, use or handling of the product.

PATENT WARRANTY

If notified promptly in writing of any action broughtagainst the Purchaser based on a claim that theinstrument infringes a U.S. Patent, Leica will defendsuch action at its expense and will pay costs anddamages awarded in any such action, provided thatLeica shall have sole control of the defense of anysuch action with information and assistance (atLeica’s expense) for such defense, and of allnegotiation for the settlement and compromisethereof.

PRODUCT CHANGES

Leica reserves the right to make changes in design orto make additions to or improvements in its productswithout obligation to add such to products previouslymanufactured.

CLAIMS FOR SHORTAGES

We use extreme care in selection, checking,rechecking and packing to eliminate the possibility oferror. If any shipping errors are discovered:

1. Carefully go through the packing materials tobesure nothing was inadvertently overlooked whenthe unit was unpacked.

2. Call the dealer you purchased the product fromand report the shortage. The materials arepacked at the factory and none should be missingif the box has never been opened.

3. Claims should be filed within 30 days.

CLAIMS FOR DAMAGES IN TRANSIT

Our shipping responsibility ceases with the safedelivery in good condition to the transportationcompany. Claims for loss or damage in transitshould be made promptly and directly to thetransportation company.

If, upon delivery, the outside of the packing caseshows evidence of rough handling or damage, thetransportation company’s agent should be requestedto make a “Received in Bad Order” notation on thedelivery receipt. If within 48 hours of delivery,concealed damage is noted upon unpacking theshipment and no exterior evidence of rough handlingis apparent, the transportation company should berequested to make out a “Bad Order” report. Thisprocedure is necessary in order for the dealer tomaintain the right of recovery from the carrier.

combinations of refraction and projectiondistances achievable with this system.

4. Install the projector screen.5. Insert the variable focus objective tube (6) into

the support barrel (2). Do not fully tighten theinner objective lock screw so as to allow for finalfocus adjustments. Check the in and outmovement of the outer and inner objective tubes(5) and (6). It may be necessary to loosen lockscrews and to provide freedom of movement.

6. Attach the Selectra P-O-C to the mount byloosening the mounting screws (7) and insertingthe projector mount onto the ball. Tightenscrews, allowing for some movement of theprojector for final positioning. Fully tighten thescrews after final adjustment of the system.

7. Plug power cord into AC inlet and into a wallpower outlet. Set the power switch (11) to the“ON” position.

After the unit is turned on, there will be a 5 seconddelay before the projector lamp illuminates. Whenusing the power switch on the unit, always allow 10seconds after turning the unit off before turning theswitch back on again.

ALIGNMENT

1. Project a 20/200 or .01 “E” (or other character)onto the screen by pressing the (SN 300 100) or(SN0.067 0.20) key.

2. Check the three dimensional alignment of thesystem. The projector is optimized when theprojection screen is angled to direct light to thepatient’s head. Place a mirror on the screen.

INSTALLATION

The projector should be installed according to thefollowing procedures.

1. If using a wall mount, it is best to locate a wallstud to support the projector’s weight.

2. The following distances are important in the set-up of a refracting room:

REFRACTING DISTANCE (RD) The distancefrom the patient’s eye to the screen.

PROJECTION DISTANCE (PD) The distancefrom the slide to the screen.

LETTER HEIGHT (LH) The height of a 20/200or 0.1 character should be equal to the refractiondistance times the tangent of 50 minutes of arcor .014545.

LH(inches) or (mm) = RD(inches) or (mm) x.014545

For example, a refracting distance of 240 inches(20 feet) will require a 20/200 letter height of3.49 inches (240 inches x .014545 = 3.49inches) or for a 4000mm (4m) refractingdistance, you will require a letter height of58.18mm (4000mm x .014545 = 58.18mm).

3. Determine the refracting distance by measuringthe distance from the patient to the screen.Please refer to Figures 1 and 2 which show

The light should project where the patient’s headwould be (See Figure 3).

3. Adjust the image positioning on the screen. Itmay be necessary to adjust the projector and thescreen. Secure projector by tightening mountingscrews (7).

4. Determine the proper letter size based on therefracting distance used. Refer to Figure 4 andthe Letter Sizing Chart at the end of this manual(See page 15).

5. Attach Letter Sizing Chart to the screen.6. Move the inner and outer objective tubes (5 and

6) usually in opposite directions, until the 20/200or .01 “E” is in sharp focus and fills the bracket onthe Letter Sizing Chart as shown in Figure 4.

7. Project the SN 80/40 or 0.25/0.50 to sharpestfocus and tighten inner and outer objective lockscrews. Return to SN 300/100 or 0.067/0.20 andcheck for correct alignment of projected slide toframe of screen.

Note: To obtain longer refracting distances in smallrooms, a mirror or system of mirrors can beused. A high quality front surface mirror isrequired. See Figure 5 as an example ofarrangement of a short room with full 20 footrefracting distance.

To prevent interference with the operation of the IRwindow, care should be taken not to position anybright lights directly towards the front of the Selectra.

THE IR REMOTE CONTROL

The Selectra is operated by an IR remote control.The Selectra’s ergonomically designed IR remotecontrol is divided into six sections for ease of use(See Figure 6):

The remote control unit has a phosphorescent panelwhich will glow-in-the-dark for a few minutes after thelights are turned off.

Note: Slide configurations may differ from Figure 6above.

CONTROL KEYS

ON\OFF Turns the lamp “ON” or “OFF.”Wait 5 seconds after turning theSelectra off before turning it back on toallow for resetting.

Note: The Selectra has an automatic shut offsystem which will shut off the lamp after 15minutes. Press the ON/OFF key to turninstrument on again.

ROOM Can be used to control room lights.

SLIDES - Interchangeable/Variations

The Selectra P-O-C comes equipped with 25 slidesas standard. Configurations vary around the world,but will include a selection of Snellen letters, illiterateE's, numbers and pediatric slides, as well as somespecial test slides.

The Selectra P-O-C is designed so that all slides canbe interchanged with other slides from an extensivelibrary (See pages 17 & 18 for available slides).

To access a slide, point the remote control at theprojector. Press the key representing the desiredslide.

Fixation Spot

The fixation spot is accessed by pressing the WorthFour Dot key twice.

MASKS

There are 5 mask groups consisting of: 5 horizontalmasks, 1 vertical mask, 3 groups of 5 charactermasks, an open aperture, and a red/green filter.

The horizontal masks highlight each line of astandard slide. The vertical mask highlights thecenter column of a standard slide. Access to anymask is accomplished by depressing the keyrepresenting the desired mask group. Repeated/continuous depression of the key steps forwardthrough the group in a circular fashion. If a new slideis selected when a mask is selected, the mask isreplaced by the open aperture. If a mask is desired,it must be selected.

Red/Green Filters

The Red/Green filter can mask any slide in theSelectra. Pressing the OPEN key twice will selectthe Red/Green filter. The filter will remain in placeuntil OPEN or any other mask key is pressed.

ARROW KEYS

The ARROW KEYS step forward or backwardthrough the slide group or mask groups. Repeated/continuous depression of the right arrow key willproject the slides in the order shown on the remotecontrol. Repeated/continuous depression of theLEFT ARROW key projects slides in the oppositeorder.

After selecting a Horizontal or Single CharacterMask, repeated/continuous depression of theARROW KEYS steps forward (RIGHT ARROW) orbackward (LEFT ARROW) through the specifiedgroup in a circular fashion. The ARROW KEYS haveno effect on the single vertical mask.

PROGRAMS

The Selectra P-O-C can record up to 6 programs ofup to 40 slide/mask combinations. Two (2) sampleprograms have been prerecorded. The followingexample illustrates how each key functions in theprogram mode.

Program 1 consists of horizontally masked Snellencharacters, 20/80 through 20/20. To use the firstprogram:

1. Press PROGRAM 1. A 20/80 Snellen line willappear.

2. Press the RIGHT ARROW key. The 20/70 linewill appear. Keep pressing the RIGHT ARROWkey to step through each Snellen line.

3. When you have reached the end of the program(the 20/20 line), the program will start over again.You may use the LEFT ARROW key to stepbackwards in a program.

4. To stop the program, press the END key, thelamp will blink.

It is possible to select any slide or mask withoutdisturbing the program. Pressing the RIGHT ARROWkey will then project the next program step in theprogram and the LEFT ARROW key will then projectthe previous step.

In addition to selecting a different slide or mask whileusing a program, another program can be selected.Pressing any program key will begin the newlyselected program. For example:

To end the active program, press END. Thepreviously selected program (if present) becomesactive. If no other program had been selected, anymask will go to the OPEN position and the last slidein the program will remain visible, otherwise the lampwill blink. Pressing END when no sequence is activewill cause the lamp to blink, indicating there are noactive sequences.

Suggestion: Programming different refractionprocedures in separate programs will allowmovement out of the standard procedure. This willthen allow easy access to a different program tomake a quick check or fine tuning. The standardprocedure can then be returned to the same placewhere it is was originally interrupted.

Only two programs can be accessed at any time. Toenter another program, the second program must beended.

USER PROGRAMMING

To record a program containing slides and/or masks:

1. Press the RECORD key. The projection lamp willdim indicating that the recording mode is active.

2. Next select the program number (1-6) desired.Selection of an unused program is suggested(such as Program 3).

3. Using the slide and mask keys, select the slideand/or mask desired for the first step.

4. Press the ENTER key; the lamp will blink. Thiswill record the current slide/mask combination.

5. Now select the next slide/mask, and pressENTER to record this selection.

NOTE: If an incorrect slide or mask isselected, and ENTER has been pressed,press LEFT ARROW to move to the previousstep and re-select the slide or mask. PressENTER to record this step.

6. After the last selection has been made pressEND. The projection lamp will return to normalbrightness.

To view this program:

1. Press the desired PROGRAM KEY and the firstslide/mask will appear.

Existing programs can also be edited. To changeone step in a program:

1. Select the desired program and press RIGHTARROW until the step to be changed appears.Press RECORD. The projection lamp will dim.

2. Select the new slide or mask and press ENTERto record over the previous selection. The nextstep will be projected.

3. Press RECORD to finish the editing process.4. Press END to exit the program.

If changes in several steps are desired:

1. Follow the steps above selecting each new slideand/or mask.

2. Press ENTER each time to record them.3. After completing the changes, press RECORD

followed by END to finish this program.

To completely clear a program:

1. Press RECORD.2. Select the program to be cleared.3. Press END.

To add additional steps to the end of program:

1. Select the desired program and press RIGHTARROW to move to the last step.

2. Press RECORD.3. Select the new slide/mask and press ENTER to

record it. Continue adding steps in this way.4. When finished, press END.

If you want to shorten a program:

1. Move to the last step desired.2. Press RIGHT ARROW to move one step beyond

the desired step.3. Press RECORD so that the projection lamp is

dim.4. Press END. The program will now end at the

previous step.

LAMP REPLACEMENT

The Selectra Project-O-Chart uses the 11148Halogen Lamp to produce a balanced combination ofbrightness and long bulb life. Use of any otherlamp may damage your projector.

SCREEN CLEANING

The Reichert Project-O-Chart non-polarizing screenhas an extremely high reflective characteristic and isvery susceptible to abrasive scratches and fingerprints.

HANDLE WITH CARE.

Periodic cleaning of the screen is advised. Use amild detergent solution, wiping screen surface gentlywith dampened absorbent cotton.

MAINTENANCE

WARNING: THE FOLLOWINGPROCEDURE SHOULD BEPERFORMED ONLY BY A QUALIFIEDSERVICE TECHNICIAN.

INTERNAL FUSE

This instrument contains an internal fuse. To replacethe fuse, please follow these procedures:

1. Turn the projector “OFF.”2. Unplug the power cord from the wall and the

instrument.3. Locate the fuse cover door in the back of the

projector.4. Remove the fuse cover door by removing the

screw using a 5/64" hex wrench.5. Replace the fuse with a fuse of the same size

and rating. The size and rating is printed in atriangular label underneath the fuse holder or onthe fuse itself.

SETTING LINE VOLTAGE SELECTOR

The line voltage can be set for either 115 voltoperation or 230 volt operation.

To select 230 volt operation:

1. Turn the projector “OFF.”2. Unplug the power cord from the wall and the

instrument.3. Locate the fuse cover door in the back of the

projector.4. Remove the fuse cover door by removing the

screw using a 5/64" hex wrench.5. Locate the voltage selector switch and slide

switch to the 230 volt position

Should you need to replace the lamp, please proceedas follows:

1. Disconnect power.

2. Pull down on the lamp access door (9).

WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH THELAMP IF THE UNIT HAS BEEN IN USE.TO REMOVE THE LAMP, USE A THICKCLOTH OR WAIT UNTIL IT HASCOOLED.

3. To remove the lamp, pull straight out.4. To replace, insert pins straight into the socket

and gently push down until fully seated.

WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH THELAMP AS FINGERPRINTS ON THEGLASS WILL SHORTEN THE LAMPLIFE. USE THE SLEEVE PROVIDEDWITH THE LAMP.

5. Close lamp access door.

6. Plug the power cord into the instrument and theninto the wall. The projector is now ready for use.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT FOR IRREMOTE CONTROL

The remote is powered by a high quality alkaline 9vbattery supplied with the projector. To replace thebattery, press down on the battery door and slide itback. Remove the battery, unfasten the connectorand install the new battery.

ROUTINE CARE

This projector requires very little care. The exteriorhousing is made of polycarbonate and can becleaned with mild soap or detergent applied to aclean cloth.

The focusing tube can be cleaned with a soft cleandry cloth.

To clean remote control, wipe with a soft clean drycloth.

DO NOT DISASSEMBLE TO CLEAN LENSES.

6. Replace the fuse with a 0.5A/250V slo-blo fuse.

WARNING: THESE PROCEDURESSHOULD BE PERFORMED ONLY BY AQUALIFIED SERVICE TECHNICIAN.

SLIDE CLEANING/REPLACEMENT

To access slides for removal/cleaning outlinedbelow:

1. Disconnect power cord.

2. Remove two (2) cover retaining screws locatedat bottom rear center and bottom front center.

3. Lift and remove cover.

4. Remove slide by grasping the slide holder tab.Push tab away from the wheel and pull up.

5. For slide cleaning, use a lint free cloth or tissuedampened with glass cleaner. Take care to onlydampen the cloth/tissue. Do not use excessliquid.

6. Do not use undue pressure when wiping.

7. Examine for and remove slide surface streaks.

An alternate method for cleaning involves use ofcamel's hair brush and/or air from a bulb syringe.

MULTI-SELECTRA INSTALLATION

PREVENTING INTERFERENCEBETWEEN MULTIPLE SELECTRAS

The Selectra has a set of four internal switcheswhich can be used to prevent interference whenusing more than one Selectra in a room. Pleasecontact qualified service personnel to perform thisadjustment.

After removing the top cover, four “dip” typeswitches will be visible on the PC board. All fourshould normally be OFF. There are identicalswitches located inside the remote control. Bysetting the switches to a setting other than OFF-OFF-OFF-OFF, multiple projectors will not interactwith each other. Make sure that the switch in theremote control and the switch in the projector areboth set the same. Sixteen different combinationscan be selected.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

SYMPTOM

Projection lamp does not light

Unit does not respond to remote control - Point hand-held more directly at front of Selectra- Battery in hand-held is drained, replace with high

quality Alkaline 9 volt battery.- Bright room lighting is saturating detector. Re-

position projector away from bright light.- Switch power to ON if unit is set to OFF.

- Lamp has burned out; replace lamp.- Internal fuse has blown; replace fuse.- Power outlet into which unit is plugged is not

working.
