Wrangler Portable Corral adds efficiency, versatility to every cattle operation

Farmers visiting the 2017 Topeka Farm Show and the Kan-sas Soybean Expo 2017 will have the opportunity to see the new-est and latest in farm and ranch equipment, plus attend the annual convention of the Kansas Soybean Commission.

The 2017 Topeka Farm Show dates are Jan. 10 to 12 while the Kansas Soybean Expo will be held Jan. 11 with all events at the Kan-sas Expocentre. The show hours are Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Jan. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. As

usual there is free admission and free parking at the 2017 Tope-ka Farm Show. The 28th Topeka Farm Show is known as Kansas’ premier indoor farm show. It is co-sponsored by AM 580 WIBW Radio and High Plains Journal. Kelly Lenz and Greg Akagi of WIBW will be broadcasting live all three show days.

Producers, families and dis-tributors will come together for three days of education and enter-tainment at the Kansas Expocen-tre. The 2017 show is once again a complete sellout with more than

496 companies and over 730 dis-play booths. The show will once again use three buildings: Domer Arena, Landon Arena and Exhi-bition Hall. Domer Arena is full of displays to include grain and livestock trailers, portable build-ings, farm tools, irrigation equip-ment, tractor loaders, dirt scrap-ers, portable corrals, and squeeze chutes. Be sure to stop by Domer Arena and register for the Aluma ATV Trailer Model 548LW with a MSRP of $1,792 and is courtesy of Hoyt Truck Center. The drawing will be at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 12.

Tradexpos staff is estimating more than 35,000 farmers and ranchers will attend the 28th annual show. The VFW of Topeka booth is located in Landon Arena and event-goers can support freedom by purchasing a raffle ticket.

Scott’s Free Horse Training Clin-ics are located in the Domer Live-stock Arena and they will be held twice daily.

John McDonald knows a thing or two about livestock equipment after working with cattle and rodeo livestock most of his life. Knowing there had to be a better portable corral design out there, he came up with it himself.

In 2003 the public was intro-duced to his original Rawhide Portable Corral. It could be set up by one person without any lifting and it could be done quickly, yet it could also be pulled down the road at highway speeds, ensuring that no time would be wasted while catching cattle.

Fast forward 13 years and in 2016 the company has an even bet-ter portable corral. The Processor was introduced in 2010 and offers the same benefits as his original design while also offering cattle

processing abilities with a perma-nent alley built into the system.

The Processor is offered in three sizes for the convenience of ranchers and cattle producers throughout the world and the main difference with this design is the ability to customize the corral upon ordering by includ-ing a hydraulic alley, head gate or loading chute. Whether you simply want to catch your cattle or process them on site and load them into a trailer from the pas-ture, you are able to do so with the Processor.

The design of the Processor continues to impress cattle pro-ducers with its versatility and ease of use. The permanent sheeted adjustable alley aids with working your livestock, whether it is done on site or in the field. The adjust-

able alley can be sized from 30 inches down to 16 inches, either manually or hydraulically.

Even though the Processor’s design is viewed as the supe-rior portable corral on the mar-ket, McDonald believes there are still those who will want a smaller, more affordable sys-tem. Within the coming year his old design will be making a comeback. This system will be a blend between the two designs he has offered through-out the years and can be either a gooseneck or bumper pull model and the transport wheels will be permanent, so there is no need to remove them from the system as was needed with his earlier design.

The most notable features of the Rawhide corrals are they are easy to set up and they are easy to transport. They mean it when they say one person can open up the corral without lifting a panel. This will continue to be the model as the company moves forward with newer designs.

The key is one person can handle it all by themselves. Cus-tomers can manipulate the pan-els so it is not just one big pen, but two, three or even four pens for sorting, as one can never have enough pens when it comes to working cattle.

McDonald’s design was the first portable corral on the mar-ket to offer the hydraulic lift option. This has been so popular

that Rawhide now offers cus-tomers the option to buy the hydraulic lift kit with or without the battery so they may upgrade existing equipment of their own. A lift kit includes the jack, power unit, solar panel and, of course, the option of including a battery at time of purchase.

Kansas soybean farmers and their industry partners will gather Jan. 11, 2017, in Topeka for the Kansas Soybean Expo. The Kan-sas Soybean Association organiz-es the annual event, with checkoff funding from the Kansas Soybean Commission, to coincide with the Topeka Farm Show.

The free event returns to the Capitol Plaza Hotel’s Maner Conference Center at the Kan-sas Expocentre. Registration and exhibits open at 8:30 a.m., with the program scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. A reception with KSA and KSC leaders will follow.

The welcome will come from

KSA President Raylen Phelon, Melvern, and KSC Chairman Kurt Maurath, Oakley. The open-ing session will offer checkoff-partner updates from Jay O’Neil, senior agricultural economist at

the IGP Institute, and Mike Steen-hoek, executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition.

The next two presenters will come from K-State Research and Extension. William Schapaugh, Ph.D., soybean breeder and profes-sor of agronomy, will offer “Search-ing for Genes and New Gene Com-binations.” Dallas Peterson, Ph.D., weed-science specialist and profes-sor of agronomy, will lead “The Ongoing Battle With Weeds.”

Clay Patton from Kansas Farm and Ranch Radio will be master of ceremonies at the luncheon,

where Tracy Streeter, director of the Kansas Water Office, will be the featured speaker. Phelon then will preside over the asso-ciation’s annual meeting, which will include the approval of policy resolutions and the board of direc-tors elections.

Following lunch, KSA and KSC will present awards and rec-ognitions, including the DuPont Young Leaders and the Kansas Soybean Yield and Value Con-tests winners. The afternoon’s customary “Planning for the Future” session will bring Darrell Holaday from Advanced Market Concepts and Country Futures to present “Managing the Eco-nomic Shifts in U.S. & World Production Agriculture.”

have been done, and it has worked for years. However as technology increases and our consumer base relies heavily on the mantra “time is money,” we too must change. We encourage ideas, thoughts and per-sonal relationships to form so that we can become better every day.

Lastly we give back. We give back

to our team through profit sharing programs, outings to events, special dinners and providing a fun envi-ronment for all. We give back to our consumers by sponsoring FFA events, hosting mixers and encour-aging safety throughout harvest. We give back to our community by participating in community events, serving on the Agriculture Commit-tee through the Area Chamber and participating in nonprofit programs such as Salina Shares. We give back to the world by through charitable donations and participating in con-struction projects in countries such as Grenada, Belize and El Salvador.

Vit-A-Zine is a vitamin and mineral pasture supplement with a balance of amino acids coming from multiple protein sources. It is fed free choice. Because it also has salt, animals will self-ration and no other supplements are required.

Farm Bureau, the state’s largest farm organization, you should consider changing that today. Not only does KFB represent grassroots agriculture with a county Farm Bureau in each of Kansas’ 105 counties, they also offer a host of money-saving benefits.

Dana Pieper and her husband David live and farm in Rooks Coun-ty and the Piepers have been Farm Bureau members for more than 19 years. Dana says the organization

provides a valuable service to the farming community and the mem-ber benefits are an added perk.

The benefits can save you money on large and small purchases.

For example, members can save $500 when purchasing a new Ford vehicle, $300 to $500 on CASE IH equipment, receive exclusive discounts on Grainger products and see savings from cell phone providers like Nex-Tech and Verizon. And new for 2016 is a partnership with Quality Structures, Inc., where members save up to $1,500

on a new building package.Utilizing the benefits is key. The

savings quickly outpace the cost of membership.

“We save $108 a year on our Nex-Tech cell phone bill,” said Clara Estes Mull, from Ottawa County.

“The cost to be a member of Ottawa County Farm Bureau Asso-ciation is only $50 a year.”

If you travel for work or play, con-sider using the discounts on Choice Hotels and Wyndham Hotels. Even a new member can save right away. Just

ask Rachel Harman from Ellis County.“We already had two hotel stays

booked for baseball tournaments, but I went online and re-booked with the Kansas Farm Bureau member benefit codes saving our family $114.15.”

With more than 40 benefits, keeping track of them all may seem daunting, but guess what?

There is an app for that. Mem-bers can download the “FB Benefits” app for Android or Apple phones.

It will show you what benefits are close by and keeps a copy of your

membership card and number.“The app is a handy tool for

our members,” said Debbie Har-grave, director of KFB’s member benefits. “It’s easy to set up and can quickly show you what ben-efits are in your neighborhood, town, county and state.”
