Called to Mission
Julie and I were blessed to be
able to visit our daughter Ruth
in southern Africa last month.
Ruth works with a shelter for
children living on the streets in
Harare, Zimbabwe. She teaches,
disciples, and loves these at-risk
children and teens and also
works with a local church youth
group. Julie and I were impressed
with how well Ruth has adapted to
life in Zimbabwe and how she relates
to a large circle of Zimbabwean
friends and coworkers — it’s almost
as if she grew up in Africa! But, I
was also surprised at how I did not
always endure those difficulties as
graciously. I was
confronted by my own
stubborn flesh, but also
reminded of God’s
enabling grace to Ruth
that accompanies God’s
call to mission.
In God’s grace, Ruth
loves the people and life
in Zimbabwe. She has
learned how to live joyfully in the midst
of creaky beds, regular water shut-offs,
loss of electricity, terrible roads, heart-
rending poverty, corruption, police
roadblocks, bumpy roads, corruption,
not enough money, and did I mention
the roads? She gets close into the
lives of people around her. She finds
her way around the city of Harare
better than she used to find her way
around Clark County, and she has
embraced several new challenges and
roles. We are proud of Ruth, and we
are grateful for God’s enabling grace
that accompanies his call to mission.

Koinonia (koy-nohn-ee'-ah) Greek n.
A transliterated form of the Greek word, κοινωνία
Fellowship; close relationship; participation
together in a shared identity or mission.
Koinonia is being in agreement with one
another, being united in purpose, and serving
alongside each other.

we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have
Koinonia with us; and indeed our Koinonia is
with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

Introducing the Reading Corner Library!Introducing the Reading Corner Library!Introducing the Reading Corner Library!
You’ve probably noticed the new fireplace in the café (it gives the room such
a homey touch, doesn’t it?), but we have an even newer addition. Diane
Reddington has been putting together a library with some great Christian
books for both kids and adults! This will be an honor check-out system.
The books in the REV Center are still available to borrow, and the shelf in the
foyer will keep books available to purchase.
Our March feature is Biographies! We have a host of incredible Christian movers and
shakers, with plenty of options for kids, too! Want to be inspired? Want to have your
vision expanded? Want to have your faith stretched just a little? Check out one of these
biographies and see the impact of real people whose lives were yielded, directed, and
empowered by the Holy Spirit as they took their place in their generation. (Acts 13:36)
We are also featuring the works of Andrew Murray – A Pastor in South Africa who
championed the South African Revival of 1860. He authored 240 books and considered
missions to be “the chief end of the church.” Here is a chance to hear the thoughts and
stirrings, observe the faith and spiritual insight and lessons that God taught this man
throughout his life of service.
Be sure to take advantage of these wonderful resources! “Consider how to spur one another on to love and
good deeds” Hebrews 10:24. “Add to your faith goodness and to your goodness knowledge” II Peter 1:5

Join us in this great ministry!
We are now meeting on Tuesdays! Those who can meet at 9am to
pray together. Bible Study starts at 9:30am where we discuss our
lesson and homework for the previous week. We watch a video
lecture featuring Kay Arthur (the creator of the study program)
who gives further insights from scripture. We are currently study-
ing the book of Romans, chapters 6-9.
These are inductive studies that require time and effort from each
student, but what a reward we gain from studying God’s word and sharing what we have learned.
One thing I find particularly delightful is the WONDERFUL answers to prayer our group has seen
when we have brought requests before our Father as a group! Please join us and as we dig into the
treasure of the Holy Scriptures, enjoying fellowship together and intimacy with God through the study
of His Word. ~Eileen Quiring

ISRAEL STUDY TOUR APRIL 4-17, 2016
High School Winter Blast
We had an awesome time at Winter Blast this year! We went to
Camp Jonah with the youth groups from Clatskanie and Battle
Ground Baptist Churches. We had 34 people attend from
bpChurch between students and staff, with 80 people altogether
from the 3 churches! Our speaker was Ryan Fast from Teen
Mission International, and our theme was “Courageous —
A life lived IN Christ”.
Ryan spoke on how the Gospel compels us to be on mission. One
question he asked us is “What’s in your hand?” based on the story
of Moses when he encounters God at the burning bush. What are we
holding on to? What do we need to let
go of? How can we use these things to
share Christ? How often do we love to
see Jesus as our Savior but not our
role model? How does fear get in the
way of our calling? These are just a few
of the questions we asked our students this weekend, and I am looking
forward to seeing the impact this had on our group as a whole.
Overall we learned that we are called to make disciples and that God will use us in
any way that He can. Despite our fears we are made to be Courageous in Christ.
Our courage doesn't come from ourselves, it comes from Him.

is a powerful ministry with a goal to 'teach children and their parents the gospel of
Christ and train them to serve Him.' We have close to 200 students and leaders
that participate in bpChurch’s club, one of the few in the area with the Trek and
Journey clubs for Jr. High and High School students. They faithfully meet every Thursday from 6:00-
8:00pm, using every available classroom on our campus!
Each year some of our clubbers compete in Awana Bible
Quizzing, which is a highly competitive contest where our
clubbers demonstrate what they have
learned by answering multiple
choice and speed questions. The
questions include Bible verses,
definitions, and other information
from their handbooks.
T&T: The competition for the Truth and Training clubbers (3-6 grade) was
Saturday January 31st here at Brush Prairie. Four different churches competed, and we entered a total of 5
teams. Our 3rd graders took 1st place in their division, our two teams of 2nd graders took 2nd and 4thplace,
and our two teams of 6th graders took 1st and 3rd place.
Trek and Journey February 14 was competition day for our older club-
bers. The event was held 150 miles north in Gra-
ham, near Puyallup. One of our two Trek teams (Jr.
high) took 3rd in their preliminary contest, then 5th
in the finals. Our Journey team (Sr. high) took 1st in
preliminaries, then 3rd in the finals. They answered
9 of the 30 questions, which is amazing, because usually the question is only
"Recite John-" or "Name the 3-" before a team buzzes in with the answer.
This year, we got to see clear evidence of God’s provision for us:
7.5 miles from the quiz site, one of our buses broke down! We shuttled everyone in the remaining van,
arriving with the 2nd group with 5 min to spare. As the students competed, the adults wondered how we
would get someone to work on it on a Saturday afternoon. Then the dad in the one family that drove up by
themselves heard we had problems. It turned out that he was a
Ford mechanic! We were able to purchase a new belt, rent the
necessary tools, and have the bus ready to go just as we
were finishing up with the awards ceremony!
Continued from page 1
While we were there, we took a 12 hour road trip to
see Victoria Falls. The highway was not as bumpy as
it used to be, but they tried to make up for it by
increasing the frequency of police roadblocks. (“Yes,
we still have our driver’s license and registration that
we had at the last roadblock 30 minutes ago…”)
Victoria Falls is spectacular! At the west end of the
falls, which are more than a mile wide, there is a
statue of David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary
who was the first European to discover the falls. At
the base of the statue, Livingstone is remembered as a missionary, an explorer, and a liberator. As a
missionary he sought to take the gospel to the “thousands of villages which had never heard the name of
Christ” in the interior of Africa. To advance the gospel meant to explore, to learn new places and new ways,
to go beyond his previous experiences and comfort zone. He explored because he sought to liberate people in
Christ and to help liberate them from the slave trade.
Like Livingstone and like Ruth, we are called to be missionaries, explorers and liberators. Whether in
Zimbabwe or Clark County, we go with the Gospel. To do so effectively, we will need to be explorers,
pressing beyond what we know and are comfortable with in order bring what we know about Jesus near to
others: sharing, learning, listening. We will meet someone new, or know someone better, because they also
need what we have found: liberty and freedom in Christ’s forgiveness.
Lord, make us missionaries, explorers, and liberators right here. Lord, enable us by your grace for this
mission you have given us.
Pastor Bob
