Como dice el arzobispo Wenski: "La pandemia de coronavirus ha sacudido nuestro mundo y nuestras vidas. As Archbishop Wenski says: "The coronavirus pandemic has shaken our world – and our lives. Like in the aftermath of 9/11, we feel like the world has changed; but we don’t know yet what the “new normal” will be. But as a people of faith, we trust in the power of prayer and in the providence of our loving God; as a people of hope, we know that God will never abandon us; as a people of charity, despite our own fears and anxieties, we stand in solidarity with all our brothers and sisters who are infected or affected by this pandemic.

Lent this year will in many ways be a true desert experience as we necessarily impose on ourselves some “social distancing”. With the disruption that the coronavirus has brought and will bring to our lives, we, too, maybe tempted as the Israelites were in the desert to grumble against God – and perhaps not present our best selves to our spouses, loved ones and our neighbors."

Let us all be united in JESUS, by praying and supporting each other. We are in the hands of the Lord.

As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth... Jesus spat on the ground, made clay with his saliva, and smeared the man’s eyes with the clay, and said to him, “Go wash in the pool of Siloam”-- which means Sent. So the man went off and washed, and came back able to see. His neighbors and the people who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the one who used to sit and beg?” Some said, “It is,” but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” He said, “I am.” So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” He replied, “The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went there and washed and was able to see.” And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.” Next, they took the man who had been born blind, to the Pharisees. The Pharisees, in turn, began to inquire how he had recovered his sight. He told them, “He put mud on my eyes. I washed it off, and now I can see.” This prompted some of the Pharisees to assert, “This man cannot be from God because he does not keep the Sabbath.” Others objected, “If a man is a sinner, how can he perform signs like these?” They were sharply divided over him. Then they addressed the blind man again, “Since it was your eyes he opened, what do you have to say about him?” “He is a prophet,” he replied. “What!” they exclaimed, “you were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?” Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard they had thrown him out he found him and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered and said, “Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, the one speaking with you is he.” He said, “I do believe, Lord,” and worshiped him.

Today’s passage focuses on the theme of light and darkness. Throughout the season of Lent, the metaphor of light on the one hand, and shadows and darkness, on the other, reflects the way of Jesus in opposition to the ways of sin. When the Gospel was written, the relationship between Jewish Christians and the synagogue had soured, especially with the increasing Christian insight that Jesus was truly God. This conflict resulted in the excommunication of Jewish Christians from the synagogue. Today’s narrative reflects that historical crisis and the anger of the Jewish Christians. The name of the pool reminded John’s readers of the One who was “sent” to cure spiritual blindness; he wrote about a physical cure to call to mind spiritual blindness. The reading is rich in meaning: a) In using saliva, kneading clay, and healing, Jesus broke the Sabbath rules; b) Those who think they can see (in this case the Jews) are, in truth, blind; c) He who was blind from birth took a risk at Jesus’ invitation and ended up seeing; d) The parents refused to take the risk and remained ignorant. There is no one so blind as the person who refuses to see!

En aquel tiempo, al pasar, Jesús se encontró con un ciego de nacimiento... hizo un poco de lodo con tierra y saliva. Untó con él los ojos del ciego y le dijo: “Anda a lavarte en la piscina de Siloé” [que quiere decir: El Enviado]. El ciego fue, se lavó, y cuando volvió veía claramente. Sus vecinos y los que lo habían visto pidiendo limosna, decían: “No es éste, acaso, el que venía a sentarse y pedía limosna?” Unos decían: “Es él”. Otros decían que no, sino que era parecido. El decía: “Sí, soy yo”... Era sábado cuando Jesús hizo lodo y abrió los ojos al ciego. Los judíos, pues, llevaron ante los fariseos al que hasta entonces había sido ciego, y otra vez, los fariseos le preguntaron cómo había sanado de la ceguera. Contestó él: “Me puso barro en los ojos, me lavé y veo”. Algunos fariseos decían: “Ese hombre no es de Dios porque trabaja en día sábado”. Pero otros se preguntaban: “¿Cómo puede ser pecador un hombre que hace signos como éste?” “Y tú, ¿qué piensas de él, puesto que te ha abierto los ojos?” El contestó: “Es un profeta”... Le contestaron ellos: “Desde tu nacimiento estás en pecado ¿y vienes a darnos lecciones a nosotros?” y lo expulsaron. Jesús supo que lo habían expulsado, y al encontrarlo le dijo: “¿Crees tú en el Hijo del Hombre?” Éste le contestó: “¿Quién es, Señor, para que crea en él?” Jesús le dijo: “Tú lo estás viendo. Soy yo, el que habla contigo”. El dijo: “Creo, Señor”, y se arrodilló ante él.

El pasaje de hoy se centra en el tema de la luz y la obscuridad. A través de todo el tiempo de cuaresma, la metáfora de la luz y de la sombra refleja el camino de Jesús opuesto a los caminos del pecado. Cuando el Evangelio fue escrito, la relación entre los judíos cristianos y la sinagoga era tensa, especialmente con la creciente visión cristiana de que Jesús era el verdadero Dios. Este conflicto tuvo como resultado la excomunión de los judíos cristianos de la sinagoga. La narrativa de hoy refleja la crisis histórica y la ira de los judíos cristianos. El nombre de la piscina le recordó a los lectores de Juan “El enviado” para curar la ceguera espiritual; Juan escribió acerca de una cura física para recordarnos la ceguera espiritual.
