Gospel reading ( Luke 17: 11- 19) Evangelio ( San Lucas 17, 11 - 19)
As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voice, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”
Today’s passage describes an encounter between Jesus and ten lepers. According to the Law (Lev 13:45-46), lepers were required to avoid contact with non-lepers. Moved by faith in Jesus as a merciful healer, they asked to be cured. Jesus instructs them to go and show themselves to the priests, who were responsible for deciding if a leper was cured and could return to the community. The ten obeyed and on their way were cleansed, but only one returned to thank Jesus. This example would have been enough to show the importance of gratitude, but the story contains another disturbing element: the one who returned was a Samaritan!* The message is clear: If those to whom salvation came first do not recognize it, it will then be offered to all the world. *Samaritans and Jews were bitter enemies and they were traveling together because their leprosy had turned both groups into outcasts in their society.
Brief commentary
If we have died with Christ Jesus we shall also live with him;
if we persevere we shall also reign with him. — 2 Timothy 2:11‑12a
Today’s reading offers significant messages: ♦ God’s mercy is showered on the grateful and the ungrateful. God
alone knows the motives for our actions. Maybe the nine lepers were forgetful or thought that it was more important to fulfill the Law by showing themselves to the priests than to come back to thank Jesus.
♦ The faith of the lepers led them to physical healing, but for the Samaritan this healing brought also salvation.
♦ The story of the Samaritan leper is narrated only in Luke’s gospel who also tells the parable of the Good Samaritan. In both cases, Jesus held up a non-Jew as an example to his Jewish contemporaries.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes: ♦ Dios es misericordioso con los agradecidos y los
malagradecidos. Sólo Dios sabe los motivos de nuestras acciones. Quizás los nueve leprosos pensaron que era más importante presentarse a los sacerdotes que regresar a dar gracias a Jesús.
♦ La fe de los leprosos los sanó físicamente, pero la sanación del samaritano le trajo también la salvación.
♦ Lucas es el único evangelista que narra esta historia y también la parábola del Buen Samaritano. En ambos casos, Jesús pone a un extranjero como ejemplo para los judíos.
En aquel tiempo, de camino a Jerusalén, Jesús pasó por los límites de Samaria y Galilea. Al entrar a un pueblo, diez hombres leprosos le salieron al encuentro. Se quedaron a cierta distancia y gritaron: “Jesús, Maestro, ten compasión de nosotros”. Jesús les dijo: “vayan a presentarse a los sacerdotes”. Mientras iban, quedaron sanos. Uno de ellos, al verse sano, volvió de inmediato. Llegó alabando a Dios en alta voz y echándose a los pies de Jesús, con el rostro en tierra, le daba gracias. Este era samaritano. Jesús entonces preguntó: “¿No sanaron los diez? ¿Dónde están los otros nueve? ¿El único que ha vuelto a alabar a Dios ha sido este extranjero?” En seguida dijo al hombre: “Levántate y vete: tu fe te ha salvado”.
El pasaje de hoy narra un encuentro entre Jesús y diez leprosos. Según la Ley (Levítico 13,45-46), los leprosos eran mantenidos aparte para que no contagiaran al resto del pueblo; nadie podía acercarse a ellos sin quedar impuro. Estos diez, movidos por la fe en Jesús, le piden sanación. Jesús les manda ir a presentarse a los sacerdotes que eran los que tenían el cargo oficial de determinar si un leproso había sido curado y podía regresar a la comunidad. Los diez obedecieron al Maestro y por el camino quedaron sanos, pero sólo uno regresó a dar las gracias alabando a Dios. La enseñanza va más allá del agradecimiento, ¡el único que regresó era samaritano!* El mensaje es claro: si aquellos a los que la salvación llegó primero (judíos) no la reconocen, ésta será ofrecida a todo el mundo. *Los samaritanos y los judíos eran enemigos. En este caso viajaban juntos porque ambos estaban excluidos de sus comunidades.
Breve comentario
Si morimos con Cristo Jesús viviremos con él; si nos mantenemos firmes, reinaremos con él.

Biblical Reflection: Lk 16: 19-31 The Christian who unites his own death to that of Jesus views it as a step toward him and an entrance into everlasting life… (CCC 1020) All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. (CCC 1030) God predestines no one to go to hell; for this, a willful turning away from God (a mortal sin) is necessary, and persistence in it until the end. In the Eucharistic liturgy and in the daily prayers of her faithful, the Church implores the mercy of God, who does not want “any to perish, but all to come to repentance”. (2 Pe 3:9) (CCC 1037) At the end of time, the Kingdom of God will come in its fullness. After the universal judgment, the righteous will reign for ever with Christ, glorified in body and soul. The universe itself will be renewed: The Church… will receive her perfection only in the glory of heaven, when will come the time of the renewal of all things. At that time, together with the human race, the universe itself, which is so closely related to man and which attains its destiny through him, will be perfectly re-established in Christ (LG 48). (CCC 1042) “We know neither the moment of the consummation of the earth and of man, nor the way in which the universe will be transformed. The form of this world, distorted by sin, is passing away, and we are taught that God is preparing a new dwelling and a new earth in which righteousness dwells, in which happiness will find and surpass all the desires of peace arising in the heart of men” (GS 39,1) (CCC 1048) “May your Creed be for you as a mirror. Look at yourself in it, to see if you believe everything you say you believe. And rejoice in your faith each day.” St. Augustine, Semo 58, 11, 13. (CCC 1064) Questions for discussion: • St. John of the Cross said, “at the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love”. What do these
words mean to you? • How would you like to live the rest of your days here in this world? Is this a topic that worries you
or that you think about at any time? • To be afraid of death is understandable as part of our survival instinct, but how could we, as
Christians, reach a peaceful acceptance of the fact that one day we will die? • Who or what do I want most to see when I enter into the eternal life? • How do I visualize the eternal life in the glory of heaven?

LA PROFESION DE LA FE CRISTIANA C Biblical Reflection: Lc 16: 19-31 El cristiano que une su propia muerte a la de Jesús ve la muerte como una ida hacia El y la entrada en la vida eterna… (CIC 1020) Los que mueren en la gracia y en la amistad de Dios, pero imperfectamente purificados aunque están seguros de su eterna salvación, sufren después de su muerte una purificación, a fin de obtener la santidad necesaria para entrar en la alegría del cielo. (CIC 1030) Dios no predestina a nadie a ir al infierno; para que esto suceda es necesaria una aversión voluntaria a Dios (un pecado mortal), y persistir en él hasta el final. En la liturgia eucarística y en las plegarias diarias de los fieles, la Iglesia implora la misericordia de Dios, que “quiere que nadie perezca, sino que todos lleguen a la conversión” (2 P 3,9). (CIC 1037) Al fin de los tiempos el Reino de Dios llegará a su plenitud. Después del Juicio final, los justos reinarán para siempre con Cristo, glorificados en cuerpo y alma, y el mismo universo será renovado: La Iglesia… sólo llegará a su perfección en la gloria del cielo… cuando llegue el tiempo de la restauración universal y cuando, con la humanidad, también el universo entero, que está íntimamente unido al hombre y que alcanza su meta a través del hombre, quede perfectamente renovado en Cristo. (CIC 1042) “Ignoramos el momento de la consumación de la tierra y la humanidad, y no sabemos cómo se transformará el universo. Ciertamente, la figura de este mundo, deformado por el pecado, pasa, pero se nos enseña que Dios ha preparado una nueva morada y una nueva tierra en la que habita la justicia y cuya bienaventuranza llenará y superará todos los deseos de paz que se levantan en los corazones de los hombres” (GS 19,1). • ¿Qué o a quién anhelo yo más ver cuando entre en la vida eterna? • ¿Cómo podemos nosotros imaginarnos la vida eterna en la gloria del cielo?
