Schenkel’s wife, Fran, and the couple’s two sons were at her husband’s side when he passed away at Lutheran Hospital, where he had been hospitalized for two weeks after undergoing surgery for a bleeding ulcer. Schenkel was the PBA’s play-by-play announcer for 36 years on the popular “Pro Bowlers Tour” on ABC. He was elected to the PBA Hall of Fame in 1976 under the Meritorious Service category, going in as a member of the PBA’s second class of Hall of Famers. The PBA renamed its Player of the Year award the Chris Schenkel Player of the Year award begin- ning in 1999. Schenkel’s radio and televi- sion broadcasting career spanned more than 60 years and included virtually every major sports competition. Known for his honey-smooth baritone voice, he was the first to cover the Masters Tournament on television, in 1956; the first to call a college football game coast to coast on ABC; and the first to serve as live sports an- chor from the Olympics, in Mexico City in 1968. Other highlights include call- ing gymnast Nadia Comaneci’s perfect 10 at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, and calling the 1958 NFL Championship game be- tween the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants, considered by many the greatest football game ever played. Schenkel also had a long as- sociation with the Indianapolis 500, including a scary moment. Schenkel, astronaut John Glenn and Tony Hulman, the late owner of Indianapolis Motor Speed- way, were passengers in the Dodge Challenger pace car at the 1971 race when it skidded into a bleacher section full of photog- raphers. Twenty-two people were injured, including Schenkel. Schenkel was born Aug. 21, 1923, on a farm in Wabash County, one of six children. His parents, second generation Ger- man immigrants, managed a grain and feed business. He attended Bippus High School in Huntington County PBA Mourns Loss of Chris Schenkel and later Purdue University. He fought in World War II in the Philippines, then Korea, as an infantry platoon leader. He came home to find a radio job in Richmond, Ind., then moved into television in Providence, R.I. In 1947, he assumed televi- sion play-by-play duties for Harvard University football. Five years later, he began a 13- year run as the TV voice of the New York Giants. PBA President and CEO Fred Schreyer“The entire PBA family is deeply saddened by the passing of

Chris Schenkel. He was an accomplished professional and was theface of the PBA Tour on ABC for so many years. He was a wonder-ful ambassador for the sport of bowling, but more importantly, hewas a genuinely good person who treated everyone with kindnessand decency. He will be missed.”

Carmen Salvino“Chris came to the PBA as one of the premier announcers and

he gave the PBA a lot of credibility at that time. He had a goldenvoice. Not only was he a great announcer, but I have had dinnerwith him several times and he was a good human being. He neverflaunted his position.

“He’s right at the top as far as PBA legends go because he gaveus credibility. We were a new sport on TV and when he came in hebrought in a big following. Once people saw the show they loved it,but he brought a lot of people in to begin with. He has to be right atthe top as a contributor to our sport.

“I know he loved the PBA. Of all the sports he covered, healways found time to go out with us guys. It always amazed mebecause he was a big name in sports, but he always wanted to hangout with the bowlers. If he came to Chicago he’d call me. We’dhave dinner or go downtown and see a show. He loved hangingaround the PBA guys. He was one of us and was like a brother tous. He wasn’t just an announcer.”

“It’s been a tough year. First Dick (Weber) dies, my good friendand then I lost a younger brother to cancer two months after that. Ithits home and makes you start thinking differently. Before Dickpassed, I never even thought of death. I thought we’d go on forever. Then my brother dies and I realize that nobody’s infallible. Whenyou’re an athlete for some reason you think you’re indestructible. At some point you realize you’re just like every other human be-ing.”

Walter Ray Williams Jr.“He was definitely a big name in sports and broadcasting. He

had such a great voice and was a very personable guy. He was soeasy to like and just a very nice gentleman. I really enjoyed meet-ing him and getting to know him. I wish his wife and family thebest.

“It was kind of tough at the end of the last ABC broadcast. Chrisand Bo (Burton) were in tears when they were saying goodbye. Itwas a pretty emotional moment.

“(Chris) was the broadcaster when bowling was at its biggest, inthe ‘60s ‘70s and ‘80s, especially in the ‘70s. It was Burton andSchenkel. He was definitely a big part of bowling on TV. I think headded a lot of credibility to it and seemed to enjoy doing the tele-cast. We had one or two broadcasters over the years who didn’tseem to care but Chris really seemed to enjoy the competition andthe players.”

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT CHRIS SCHENKELFrom the St. Louis Dispatch:“His finale for ABC came from suburban St. Louis on June 21,

1987, when he had an emotional send-off while broadcasting theSt. Clair Classic bowling tourney in Fairview Heights. Fans gaveSchenkel two raucous standing ovations at St. Clair Bowl and hebroke down several times.

‘This maybe is the all-time thrill of my career,’ Schenkel saidafter the telecast. ‘The crowd was just tremendous. It meant every-thing to me. I’ll always treasure the memory.’

He’ll probably be best remembered as the voice of the PBATour for its entire 36-year run on ABC.

‘Bowling has been the constant friend,’ he said in summarizinghis career.”

From ESPN.com“’He was a very, very sincere, loving man who loved what he

did,’ said wife Fran Schenkel, noting that they celebrated their 50thwedding anniversary in January.

George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN, Inc. and ABCSports, called Schenkel a pioneering sportscaster and a ‘true gentle-man.’

‘Everyone at ABC and ESPN mourns the loss of a great friendand colleague. Chris was a pioneer in sports television and was thepre-eminent play-by-play announcer to a generation of sports fans,’Bodenheimer said in a statement. ‘More importantly, he was a truegentleman, beloved by all. He treated everyone with respect andfriendship.’”

From the Indianapolis Star“The amazing thing about Chris was, even though he knew all

the kings and queens of sport, just as important to him, even more, were the people from his Indiana roots,” said John Short, assistantvice chancellor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapo-lis, who got to know Schenkel well over the past decade as theyhelped a mutual friend fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, alsoknown as Lou Gehrig’s disease. “It was so overwhelming to see themeasure of his character.”

“He was such a wisp of a guy. He was skinny but what a greatvoice he had,” Al Wester, a legendary radio announcer and friendand contemporary of Schenkel’s, said. “He was one of the beautifulguys. I don’t ever remember anyone saying anything bad aboutChris.

“I remember Chris for the many kind things he said about people. He would defend people at the drop of a hat: ‘Now wait a minute. You don’t know if he was up all night with a sick kid or his wife hadproblems.’ He used to say he would never be critical of an athletebecause you didn’t know the extenuating circumstances.”

Last summer, Jim McKay, who worked with Schenkel for manyyears at ABC, said of his partner: “Chris is one of the friendliest, nicest people you would meet anywhere. He likes people. He lovespeople. He’s very forgiving about people even if anything happensin a bad way.”

Ben Smith, Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette“Just now I’m thinking of the voice, and what a soundtrack it

was to a whole era. I’m thinking of the voice, how it bridged whatwe were with what we have become...

For now, suffice it to say that Chris Schenkel’s life was as richand full as his famous voice, and that institutional memory took amajor hit when he drew his last breath out at Lutheran Hospitalearly Sunday morning.”

Weber LooksAhead

SEATTLE–The 2004-05PBA Tour season was a toughone for Pete Weber, one of theTour’s most colorful championswho always garners nationalmedia attention.

He was hurting in so manyways and no amount of rest ortherapy was going to makethings right.

On Feb. 14, he lost his fa-ther — the legendary Dick We-ber — and four days later Peteinjured his shoulder while “play-ing around with my step-son.”

The net result was one of hisworst seasons — mentally, physically and spiritually —since earning only $25 in hislone tour start in 1979.

Pete Weber, who includesseven majors among his 31 Tourtitles, failed to make a televisionappearance last season for thefirst time since 1995.

“My physical condition wasnot good because of my shoul-der injury and I probablyshouldn’t have bowled in India-napolis or Grand Rapids,” Peterecalled. “That delayed my heal-ing time, worsened mycondition...I learned healingtakes a little longer these days.

Emotionally I was devas-tated because Dad’s death wastotally unexpected.”

Little wonder Pete managedto earn just $43,350 while bowl-ing in only 15 of 20 Tour eventslast season. That’s a far cry fromthe $2.8 million he has earned, second only to Walter Ray Wil-liams Jr. in career earnings.

Now at age 43, Pete Webersounds like a hungry bowleronce again, one willing to paythe price to regain greatness.

He has started practicing andeven entered an event on theEuropean Tour.

“I have bowled fourregionals, getting two no-checks, one cash and one topeight finish,” Pete said. “Ihaven’t completely healed. I’monly about 90 percent but ChrisSchlemer, my Storm ball rep onTour, said everything looks thesame after a few work-out ses-sions this summer.”

Pete was happy to report thathe had recently renewed his con-tract to use Storm bowling ballson Tour once again. “I feel veryconfident using Storm equip-ment because I feel it’s the bestout there. I enjoy my associationwith (owner) Bill Chrisman andthe entire Storm family.”

Pete does not sound worriedabout how he starts the 2005-06Tour in Tulsa Oct. 26, just howhe finishes it in March.

“I am still doing some

therapy on my shoulder and willpractice more before the start ofthe season. I seem to start everyseason slowly because I’m try-ing to get the feel for Tour life, traveling again.”

Life on Tour is made easierbecause wife Tracy, another out-standing bowler, is there towatch his game.

Pete, who never seems tolack confidence, says he feels nopressure trying to bounce backafter an off season.

“I don’t feel pressure toprove to anyone that I’m back. The only pressure I feel is whatI put on myself every week toperform well. Besides, I’m al-ready exempt for next year andthat will loosen up the arm swingone more season.”

He has not changed hisgoals. “They’re the same. I wantto win the Masters and be votedPlayer of the Year...two things Ihave not yet accomplished.”

Asked if he would join thePBA Senior Tour when he turns50 in 2012, Pete said: “Of courseI will because I have to winseven senior titles to stay aheadof my Dad’s six.”

Pete is already five winsahead of Dick’s 26 PBA Tourtitles.

“My heart is into the Tourthis season because I know Dadwill be there with me.”

The 2005-06 PBA Tour sea-son begins Oct. 26-30 with the2005 PBA Tulsa Championship. The arena finals take place Sun-day, Oct. 30 at the Donald W.Reynolds Center on the campusof the University of Tulsa.

STRIKEA STRIKE is made when the

full stepup of 10 pins is knockeddown with the first delivery in aframe. It is marked by an “X” inthe small square in the upperright hand corner of the framewhere it was made. The countfor one strike is 10 plus the num-ber of pin knocked down on theplayer’s next two deliveries.

WEST COVINA–Michael Seglar ofSanta Ana won the Big ABTA Labor Spe-cial Event from the top seeded positiondowning a feisty upstart Josie Matsumotoof Yorba Linda in the title game. Josiebowled super, eliminating five straight, gave it her all in the title game. Seglar,in a 200/239-179/224 count, won theABTA Labor Special topping a GreatTurnout of 609 entrants. 126 bowlersmade the Semifinals Cash Line at SuperBrunswick West Covina Lanes whichfeatured superb payoffs and optionals forour members.

Excitement was in the air all week-end and on Friday Night Jello Graybowled a perfect game in the 9PM Squad. Then Sunday on the 4PM squad “SteadyFreddie” Catamisan did the same, firinga nice perfecto. Both bowlers will be hon-ored with rings, jackets and awardplaques at the Annual Awards presenta-tions held at the Gold Coast in Las Ve-gas, July 4 weekend.

This was a 3 day Friday /Saturday /Sunday event and the scoring was a bittough, except for Friday. Each day was aseparate qualifying board which alsomade this the fairest way possible for ourmembers.

Friday eve we had (3) Squads, 143entrants. The cut score for Friday wasMen +96, Ladies +48. Saturday we had(6) Squads and had 227 entrants. Thecut scores Men +38, Ladies +35, and bythe way, our champ Seglar qualified onSaturday eve.

Sunday we had (3) regular qualify-ing squads and had 155 entrants. Cutscores of Men +23 and the Ladies +16.The 5:30 PM Re-Entry only Squad had anice 84 entrants. All in all this event had609 entrants. 126 made the cash line inthe semifinals including the added Su-per Senior bowlers led by Robert Hahn,Rico Cayton, Basilio Terrenal, NancyCantoria, and Esther Wilwayco.

The Semifinals took to the floor at8:20 PM. This fine field of 126 would allcash and have aspirations of making thetop 32 single elims of which there are 7women minimum.

The scoring was great in the semis.Seglar an ABTA regular, shot lights outand led the way with a fine +182 to betop seed, sit out and bowl for the title. Insecond place was a Super Hot MicheleTucker +151. She would receive a firstround bye and enter in round 2 of theSingle Elim Finals.

It took a nice +58 for the men and a+40 for the ladies to make the top 32Single Elim finals which had 7 guaran-teed ladies. In a tie (men) +58 we sawGreg Vermillion eliminate TomasLicauco and Fred Manansala in a 9-10frame roll off to make his was to the fi-nals with the losers cashing in 33rd-34thplaces and $148.75 each.

The first round of the finals took thefloor. Losing in round one were MarcusLemons, Lara Velasco, Youna Yun,Lorenzo Justice, Irene Kang, RogerPierce, Greg Vermillion, James Abilar,Don Quitangon, Peechit Butranon, Jun-ior Guiramy, Anita Smith, AnnaBorromeo, Rich Warner and Billy Gil-bert. They finished in 18-32nd places and$200each.

In round two we had Greg Kokanour,Jesse Boquio, Marc Levy, Phil Lebaquin,Vic Copeland, Frank Winick, Alex Maoand Michele Tucker get erased from com-petition. They collected checks of $235finishing in 10th-17th place.

In round three we had JosieMatsumoto down Ramiro Garcia 217-175. Anthony Traquena got to RonnieSanchez 227-203. In a battle of Greg’s,Greg Reed blitzed Greg Neuer 274-204.Alvin Reyes bowled well disposing ofJason Fowler 223-204. The losers were6th-9th places and $300 each.

Round 4 had Josie edge AnthonyTraquena 190-182. Alvin Reyes got toGreg Reed 199-190. So Greg and An-thony were 4th and 5th and checks of$400 each, with Alvin and Josie to meetthe winner to advance to the title gameagainst Seglar.

This match was again close. Alvincould not hit the left lane and Josie pre-vailed in another good one 190-181.Reyes, one of our Bowlers of the Year, was 3rd and $1,000 with Josie advancingto the title game.

The title match was set on lanes 53-54. A huge crowd was watching, collect-ing their Horse Money on Josie and en-joying the camaraderie.

We again would have a new cham-pion as Seglar elected to have Josie leadoff. She led with a spare then got a onecount and open to put herself in a hole.Seglar opened frame 3 and with a split inthe 6th Josie coming back keeping clean. He led her by only 9 pins. She then tooka lead of 2 pins with a double in frames8-9. Then Seglar with a strike up in the9th would need the first in the 10th to take

a lead. He did just that and another and a9 count in a clutch finish, a 200/239game. Josie would need a double in the10th to win the title. She got the first oneand now one more for the title. She hadto be a bit nervous, but threw a decentshot. But it hooked up and got the big 4.The title went to the fine gentleman fromSanta Ana who never misses an ABTAevent. It was a great title game andMichael came through in the 10th as achampion. We are very proud of him. What a performance! Great BowlingMichael! Micheal was bowling in the re-duced entry program in this event but stilltook home $2,800 as it is $2,200 for the$48 entry and another $500 Bonus forbowling 25 + squads in the calendar year,(he bowled much more:-) and the $100Logo Shirt Bonus. He is one fine Guy!Congrats Michael and title #2 is withinyour reach in the future.

Great bowling by a great lady, JosieMatsumoto who by the way embroideredMike’s Shirt (and will now do aChampion’s shirt for him also:-) and allof our shirts, and jackets in the club. Shereally bowled so well. One more strikeshe would have had her first title, match-ing her husband Glen who is an ABTAchampion. KIETZ KOMMENTSAmerican Tenpins Belongs To USBC

by FRANK KIETZLAKE FOREST — It’s our game, American Tenpins. It belongs

to the United States Bowling Congress and its complying organiza-tions, like your local certified association and if they ask politelytenpin bowlers in Canada, Central and South American territories— how about the world — can join us.

It says so in the USBC 138-page playing Rule Book, Chapter 2,Rule 1 and 2a.

Rule 1. Leagues and tournaments must be organized and bowledin accordance with USBC bylaws, rules and regulations. Theseevents must be scheduled on lanes that are currently USBC certi-fied and only USBC approved equipment may be used.

Rule 2a. A game of American Tenpins consists of ten frames. Aplayer delivers two balls in each of the first nine frames unless astrike is scored. In the 10th frame, a player delivers three balls, if astrike or spare is scored. Every frame must be completed by eachplayer bowling in regular order.

That’s it. Except, filled with words to keep the prize fund safe, lanes, gutters, balls, pins, uniforms, collect dues, handle disputesand other stuff to help keep the game rolling smoothly.

In the past, before the merger (BTM), ABC, WIBC, YABA andBPAA, probably wasted time and money, so the sharp pencil peoplesaid, “Merge”. Now we don’t have the money to waste or the people(volunteers) to do the work.

To attract members and games, these types of leagues will becertified: Adult Mixed, Adult Women, Adult Men, Youth, Adult/Youth, Mixed, Senior, Travel, Managed and others.

And, games with different formats: Standard American Tenpin,Sport, Baker, Scotch Doubles, No-Tap, 3-6-9 and Best Ball. Thiswriter doesn’t know if all their averages must be designated. If theypay their dues, yes? About $16 per player.

Help (men/women) wanted signs are posted on many So-Cal as-sociation doors. Need a job, call your association office.DONKEE TOUR

Well another season is upon us and from the looksof things; some bowlers are STILL on summer vaca-tion! Of the 24 teams bowling Monday night, 6 teamsswept leaving 6 teams looking for their team’s firstwin. Overall, scores were down as only two bowlersmanaged to roll 700 or more and I would be verysurprised to see the same results next week.

On Side “A”, not much changed for Cerio,Schroeder, and Gray as their Team #1 blasted Team#2 5-0. Steve Schroeder & Dan Cerio paved the waywith 646 & 638 respectively. Team #3 also went 5-0as Nick Negrete 664 and Herbert Jones 656 led thewinners. Another sweep on the next pair, but this timeit was the even numbered team as Team #6 pastedTeam #5. Paul Smith 674 and George Parker 666 weretops for the winners while Alan Steinberg 616 washigh for Team #5. Team #7 Tri-Star Vending downedTeam #8 5-0 behind the duo of David Yamauchi 688and Jon Brandon “IRON” with 619. JJ “Action” Jack-son with 633 led team #8. Team #10 rolled to a 4-1win over Team #9 despite Missy Bellinder’s fine 700series. Summer league Champs James Cox 682 andDavid Van Gaston 657 did most of the damage, whileGreg Neuer 646 helped Missy get Team #9’s lonewin. Team #11 squeaked out game 1 by five pins, but then Vince Wood took over by firing 280 in game2 and led Team #12 to a 4-1 win. Vince with 649 andWalter Herrarte 626 led the winners with Scott Norton635 getting the lone six for Team #11.

On Side “B”, the number 13 proved to be unlucky

for one night as Team #14 swept Team #13 behind atotal team effort as all four bowlers stroked 622 ormore. Chris Makroglous 675 and Anthony “Droopy”Drapeau 631 topped the winners with John Shynch661 and Clyde Lumpford 626 leading the non-win-ners. Team #16 Money Net Inc. led by Vernon Adamswith 650 managed a 3-2 win over Team #15 despiteJason Bueniage’s league high 728 set. Ron Schmidtwith 629 helped Jason secure the two wins for Team#15. In one of the closer matches, Team #17 defeatedTeam #18 4-1. Paul Varela 695 and Leonard Ruiz Jr.633 struck when needed, while Team #18 came upjust short despite Harry Wong Jr. 627, Nick Smith637, and Frank Barefoot Jr.675 bowling well. Team#19 got a near sweep as they defeated Team #20 4-1.R. Garcia with 635 and Jeff Garrison 629 managedthe only sixes on the pair. Raul “Spanky” Rosalesfired a fine 679 to lead Team #21 to a 4-1 win overTeam #22 with Ramon Torres helping out with 628.The last match of the night ended in another sweepas Team #23 used Super Sub Alex Castillo’s 640 andJason Fowler’s 639 to take the 5 wins from Team#24.

The side pots were down as most bowlers wereshaking off some summer rust, but the scores weren’tbad. Herbert Jones with 268 took game 1 with FrankBarefoot Jr. finishing 2nd with 247. Game 2 went toChris Makroglous with 269 followed by Jon Bran-don 234. Spanky Rosales 260 and Steve Schroeder248 won game 3, while the SUPER POT went to Ja-

son Bueniage and his fine 279. Chris Makroglous wonseries with 685 and that wraps up week 1. Congratu-lations to all the Side Pot winners!

The first week proved we all need to get some prac-tice this week, and maybe make some ball changes. There’s plenty of talent again this year, so expect tosee some Honor Scores mentioned in next week’sreport. If you haven’t come out to watch this leaguein action, you’re missing out on some of the bestbowlers So Cal has to offer. So come on down to DelRio and catch it all live! Thanks again for checkingin!

Next for Mikey was SeanMartin in the semi-finals. Mar-tin had a 57 pin advantage tostart the match and got off to afast start with a spare and a strikebefore running into back to backsplits. Helferstay respondedwith a quick three-bagger fol-lowed up by four straight spares.Sean tried to answer back witha double before opening againin the seventh followed by astrike, spare, and open in thetenth. Mike finished strong bypunching out in the tenth frameto advance to the finals by a fi-nal score of 224/240-158/231.

Kayleigh Gates awaitedMike for the final showdown.Gates entered the finals with a68 pin advantage, 84 pins handi-cap to Mike’s 16. Helferstay gotoff to a relatively slow start inhis attempt to successfully runthe gauntlet with a strike andfour spares. Gates tried to an-swer back but had three sparesand three opens to show for itafter six frames. Kayleigh fi-nally struck in the seventh, butthis was in the midst of aHelferstay three-bagger inframes six through eight. Gateswith another split in the ninth, then both went strike, nine-sparein the tenth frame to finish thematch in a dead heat...Helferstay at 213/229 and Gatesat 145/229.

So what happened? Ninthand tenth frame rolloff? Bowlthe game over? After a few min-utes of confusion and delibera-tion between the tournament di-rector and her assistant (thatwould be Ruth and RandyBeigle to the rest of you), it wasdecided that there would be norolloff. The match, and the tour-nament, ended in a tie for thefirst time since we started doingthe stepladder finals some threeyears ago. For their efforts, MikeHelferstay and Kayleigh Gateswill each be receiving $75 schol-arships. Nice bowling to all!

JAT FarmClub

by David GordonWEST COVINA - This past

Sunday, the JAT Farm Clubopened its winter portion of theseason at Brunswick WestCovina Lanes. The turnout wasa little lower than expected andcould have been due to the hourearlier check-in time. The shotwas a little more difficult thanwhat the bowlers imaged. Thebowlers need to learn not to haveexpectations of a particular cen-ter and focus on adjustments. Thanks to the management andstaff for their as usual grand ac-commodations.

The qualifying round did seea few high scores. It seemed likeeveryone had a least one pairthat they liked. JavierHernandez starts off the report-able score list with thetournament’s high game of 279.Way to go Mr. Hernandez. Ad-ditional reportable scores camein from Albert Fernandez 268,Tommy Neuzil 248, JustinEubanks 248, Dean Nishijima233-224, Aaron Steinberg 231,Natalie Jimenez 220-226, MarkCurtis 226, Dee Dee Ho 223 andSusy Monteith 221. Hernandezled the field after five games atplus 66, while the 14th spot toadvance came in at minus 97.

In match play no real bigmovements to speak of but highscores from A.J. Garcia 236,Nishijima 223-234, Ho 220-225,James Hawkins 224, Neuzil 221and Eric Milne 220. We did seea switch in leadership though, soread on.

The finals started out with5th seed Garcia (-15) taking on4th seed Curtis (+17). With dis-tractions in the background itwas hard to stay focus on thematch, especially for me. How-ever, Garcia did enough to win171-158, and move on to meetthe 3rd seed Hernandez (+18).Again, Garcia just got by 174-169 to meet 2nd seed Neuzil(+40). However, by now Garciawas tired and the distractionshad faded. Neuzil captured thismatch 194-154 to go in to thetitle match against top seedNishijima (+68). Here, Deanleft no doubt by putting thestrikes in where needed andposted a 242-160 victory for histhird title. CongratulationsDean.

Bowlers, our next tourna-ment will be on September 25that AMF Carter Lanes in Fuller-ton. Remember the start timefor check-in is 7:15 am. If youneed directions, please look onthe back of your membershipcard and call or email me.

Also remember that the FarmClub has a membership discountprogram. Bring in a bowler thathas never been a JAT memberand receive a discount on yourown tournament fees. However, you must also have played thementor role in recruiting the newmember, by making sure theyknow the format, dress code, level of talent and director ex-pectations.

With all that said, enjoy yourcouple of weeks off and I’ll seeyou at Carter.

COVINA–The SED Jr. Travelopened the 2005-06 season at BrunswickCovina Lanes this past Saturday. Likemost starting days, the field was smallwith only 12 bowlers, but looks to be apromising season with more bowlers andteams to come.

Girls Jr.All-Stars

by David GordonWEST COVINA–The Girls Jr. All-

Stars met up once again last Sunday tobegin the new 2005-06 season. Westarted off with some decision makingthat will affect the league and season.

The attendance for the new year iscurrently low and therefore, it was de-cided that we will drop down to a two-person team structure. All of the girls, parents and directors will be pushing hardto seek out those young ladies that havethe skills, desire and/or potential of be-coming a Girls Jr. All-Stars.

However, for the day, we went aheadand started the new season and bowledaway while renewing the friendships lostover the summer.

Leading the way this first week wasJillian Gaddison who reportedly neverpick up her bowling ball since we fin-ished last season back in March. Welllets not get into that habit, but Jillian putup an 240-215/840 series, just to show itall comes down to natural talent. Way togo Jillian.

Additional scoring came in fromTabetha Reynolds 206-210/762, Deanna

Champs in JSTSeason Opener

by Brian CarmichaelWith the days starting to get

shorter, and the weather get-ting cooler, one thing comes tomind too many young bowlers.A brand new season of the Jun-ior Scratch Tour is upon us.The JST started off its 05’-06’campaign of incredible tourna-ments at New Yorba LindaBowl on Labor Day Weekend,September 3rd-4th for the JST’s2nd annual Labor Day Jr. Chal-lenge. We hope everyone hada great summer, and used it totheir benefit, and got tons ofpractice in. As always we willbe offering tons of scholar-ships at all our JST tourna-ments. There are some newchanges and rules this year, and all can be found at theJST’s web site,www.jstbowl.com. Just checkit out and let us know how youfeel about anything in theGuest Book area of the site. Now with that, let’s get into theLabor Day results…

One brand new change tothe JST was the introductionof a handicap division to theNovice Div. This season willbe a test run of it, and the Nov-ice Div. average criteria is 155down, and the handicap will bedetermined at 90% of 155.With that, a small field cameout to give it a try over LaborDay weekend, and the formatwas just 9 games and total pinswould determine the winner.Joey Canale shot the highgame of the division of a nice218 to help him in the hunt ofthe title. After the 9 gamesthough, Canale found himselfin 2nd and out of 1st by just 2pins, as Marc Harding rolled anice 1587 set to take the cham-pionship. Congrats to Marc onthe great bowling.

The remaining three divi-sions bowled 2 blocks of 6games on Saturday to cut to aPBA bracket elimination for-mat for Sunday. The Interme-diate Div. saw Allie Ijams ona roll on Saturday, as she quali-fied herself as the number 1seed for Saturday with a huge2355 set for 12. Eddie Saylesqualified himself for Sunday,by rolling the high game ofqualifying with a solid 236game. The top 8 then went toSunday’s elimination bracketsand remember with this for-mat, any thing can happen, with huge upsets to underdogwins. 8th seed Jason Spencerswept Ijams in the first roundand then rolled a fine 232game to get by 4th seed DavidPhilips to set himself up for thechampionship match. The manto bowl him in the final matchwas 6th seed Jeff Glusman, who earlier defeated Sayles inthe first match, 2 games to 1,and then dropped 2nd seedWishtoyo Vasquez in the semi-final match with a nice 199game. Glusman was deter-mined and showed he wantedit, proving being a later seedisn’t such a bad thing as he gotby Spencer’s 174 with a huge

205 game. Congratulations toJeff on his win, and greatbowling.

The Advance Div. had thebiggest field of the weekend asCharlie Hair got the weekendoff good by shooting the highgame of qualifying in the firstgame with a tremendous 276.That didn’t stop PatrickSnyder from bowling his wayto tournament leader, averag-ing 210 for the 12 games withan awesome 2522 set. The top12 then went to the bracketelimination finals on Sundayand Snyder won all hismatches to make it to the finalmatch after defeating 12th seedDavid Bigham 2 games to 1 inthe 1st round, and then defeat-ing Robert Page 223-200. 10th

seed Augie Guerrero faced 6th

seed Bob Vreeland in the semi-final match after getting by 3rd

seed Samantha Jimenez in thefirst round, 2 games to 1, andthen a closer match in the sec-ond round by defeating 9th seedNick Reed’s 222 with a nice234. Vreeland got to the semi-final after sweeping 7th seedDillon Cochran in the firstmatch, and then downing 2nd

seed Brittany Page 205-191.The semi-final saw thebowlers give it back and forthto each other, but Guerreroprevailed with a 200 to beatVreeland’s 187. The champi-onship match was then set andSnyder had led for most of theweekend, and this would be byfar the closest match of theweekend, going down toSnyder’s final ball. It ended upin a 190-188 Guerrero win.Great bowling to Augie, andcongratulations on the title.

The Open Div. would cutto the top 8 for the bracket fi-nals on Sunday. Adam Ferryrolled the high game of quali-fying on Saturday with a nice266 game. Devin Bidwellrolled a nice 2604 set to takethe 1st seed for Sunday’s finals.Bidwell kept up the greatbowling, throwing a perfect,300 game in the first game ofSunday’s finals. Congrats toDevin on the 300 game, goodfor any Storm bowling ball ofhis choice. He moved on to thenext round, but was droppedby 4th seed Mike Fell’s 196game. Fell got there be defeat-ing 5th seed Sam Hitchcock 2games to none in the firstround. Fell then found himselfin the final against number 3seed Mason Sherman, whoearlier got there by defeating6th seed Danny Gartin 2 gamesto none, including a 257-256game-winner, and then drop-ping 7th seed Nathan Urrutia229-206. Fell found a greatline on the championship pair, while Sherman struggled a bit, ending in a 279-171 title win-ner. Congrats to Mike Fell onhis first ever JST win, andgreat bowling out there.
