Golf has Arnold Palmer; and for bowling, Dick Weber was THE KING. Like Carson and Palmer, Weber was the guy everybody loves, and for good reason. No one ever has, or probably ever will, do so much for an entire game and industry than Weber did for bowling. He was our hero, our ultimate role model, and we all loved him. He also had something else in common with Carson and Palmer. He was a little shy and humble, and enjoyed his private life. He didn’t revel in his ce- lebrity, but he understood the power of what his persona could do, and he didn’t hesitate to do anything and everything he could for the game he loved, and he did it well until the very last day of his glorious life. When Carson died only a month ago, there were thou- sands of stories in newspapers and magazines, and television aired dozens of tributes. When Palmer’s day comes, I’m sure the outpouring will be enor- mous. They were and are icons of American culture. Weber is equally famous, but today, only in his own industry. When we got THE CALL Monday morning, February 14, I turned on ESPN, and heard nothing about Weber’s passing. I bought a newspaper – nothing. We got home from traveling late on the 14 th . Our local paper had a story they picked up from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in the February 15 Sports. By now, maybe ESPN has aired something, and maybe there will be more coming, but the point is, Dick Weber was not an icon of American culture like Carson and Palmer because bowling has lost its station in the mainstream media, and that bothered Dick Weber. I know it did, because he told me on more than one occasion. His mission was to restore bowling’s place in sports status. Dick Weber came from an era when bowling was main- stream. In the 1950’s and 60’s when he was a star on the fa- mous Budweisers Team, and in the fledgling PBA, he was an American icon. Everybody knew his name, and face. The first time I remember seeing him was at the 1964 All Star Tournament in Dallas. I was 14. To promote the event, and the new airplane, he bowled a match against Sylvia Wene in flight aboard an American Air- lines 707 en route from New York to Dallas. Wene won, and Weber always said it was be- cause “the pilot tilted the plane,” when he was bowling. Weber didn’t like what was happening to bowling, that it was fading in status, but he didn’t give up on it. Just the opposite. He bowled exhibi- tions around the world, he bowled in and endorsed tourna- ments, he bowled at fishbowls and wine glasses and other ob- jects on the streets of New York on The Late Show. He won pro tournaments in six decades. He did far more than his share to put bowling in the spotlight. And he was loyal. To the game, to the industry, to his fam- ily, to AMF and PBA for a half century. Even in times of trouble, he steadfastly supported even those who may not have deserved his support. He stub- bornly maintained hope and an optimistic outlook. Doom and gloom didn’t exist for Weber, and he occasionally admonished naysayers, but he always did it with class and dignity. that Dick Weber was a memberof the Bowling Writers Associa-tion of America. He didn’twrite, but he did a lot of televi-sion work during this career, andhe attended every BWAA Con-vention for as long as I can re-member. He loved and re-spected the men and womenwho publicize bowling, and weloved and respected him. Hewas one of us, and his passingwill have a profound affect onnext month’s BWAA meetingsin Baton Rouge.

Weber didn’t simply make anappearance at BWAA meetings. He stayed the entire week, at-tended the meetings and parties, participated in the discussions, and rolled in the annual mediabowling tournament. I’ll missour annual dollar bet. I’m suremany others will also. He hadso many dollar bets, he couldn’tkeep up with them. A couple ofyears ago, on one of the rareoccasions when I won, I forgotto make the bet, and after I beathim, I tried to collect anyway, knowing he wouldn’t remember. He would have paid me if I’dlet him, but I couldn’t do it. Weboth had a good laugh.

I was also privileged to havea ringside seat to watch Dickbowl the doubles event with JoeNorris at the ABC NationalChampionship tournament a fewyears ago. It was the equal ofgolfers watching Palmer andNicklaus together. Perhaps thesaddest part of losing Weber sosuddenly is that we all thoughthe would have Norris’ longev-ity. He was so vibrant and fullof life. He often said he wantedto retire when he was “97 or 98,but I haven’t decided yet.”

On the wall in my officethere is a picture of only onebowler – Dick Weber. It is thepencil portrait our friend andartist Stan Clark did in 1995 forthe AMF Dick Weber Classictournament produced by GaryBeck. It is autographed “To Jim– best of luck, Dick Weber”.Thousands of people around theworld have that famous “best ofluck, Dick Weber” autograph. No bowler, probably no athletein any sport, has signed more inhis career.

I’ll always cherish mine, andmy memory of the greatest manin the history of bowling.

Editor’s Note: Thanks to JimGoodwin Publisher of the Starsand Strikes America’s BowlingNewsmagazine of RockwellTexas for this great tribute.

The family requests that inlieu of flowers, donations bemade in his name to the Inter-national Bowling Museum andHall of Fame.

For 24 years, the father and son team of Norm and Brad Edelmanhas been staging megabuck tournaments. This dynamic duo intro-duced the High Roller in 1982 at the old Showboat Hotel in LasVegas. The event, open to only amateurs, at that time, became animmediate hit...and virtually revolutionized the national tournamentscene.

This year, the annual Super Bowl High Roller was conductedFeb. 1-5 at Sam¹s Town. With Norm Edelman easing into retire-ment, son Brad is now running the show.

During that same week, a new Edelman tournament—the A GamePresented by Storm—made its debut. Unlike the High Roller, the AGame welcomed everyone, including PBA members. Only the 58exempt touring pros were ineligible to compete.

The A Game featured three age divisions: 39 & Under, 40 to 49,and 50 & Over.

In a mild surprise, the tournament champion came out of the 50& Over division. Not so surprisingly, however, the winner was PBAHall of Famer David Ozio, the stylish 2004 PBA Senior Rookie ofthe Year.

Ozio met Jason Belmonte, the two-handed strike artist fromAustralia, in a very exciting title match. Each of the three gameswent down to the final frame.

After Belmonte won the opening match, 203-192, Ozio ralliedto take the next two games, 214-183 and 211-197. Ozio collected$21,000, while Belmonte pocketed $10,500.

World-class coach John Jowdy deserves at least 10% of Ozio’sprize check. Not only are the two Texans close friends, but Jowdyspent a considerable amount of time watching Ozio and keepinghim on track to victory. If Ozio ran into trouble, Jowdy was there tostraighten him out.

The inaugural A Game was not a resounding success. It drew adisappointing entry of just 96 bowlers, including three distaff prostars—Tish Johnson, Kelly Kulick and Liz Johnson.

Kulick fared the best of this trio, the only one who qualified formatch play. She won two matches before being eliminated by Ozio,2-1. Kulick, who finished in the 5th- to 8th-place bracket, received$3,500.

Brad Edelman admitted he was very disappointed by the mea-ger turnout for the A Game. I was hoping for 200 to 300 bowlers, hesaid. We got only about 25 pros, a handful of seniors and only threewomen. I was expecting many more than that.

Edelman, however, was not to be deterred by the disappointingentry. We’ll definitely try again, he said. We may hold it (the AGame) with our July 4th High Roller, when the PBA Tour is idle.

Meanwhile, the Super bowl High Roller is still going strong,Edelman said.

As a final note on the A Game, it should be noted that Ozio wasone of three PBA Hall of Famers in the tournament. The other twowere Johnny Petraglia and Wayne Webb, both of whom cashed for$3,500 in the 5-to-8 category. And Finland’s Osku Palermaa alsoplaced in this same bracket. Palermaa, like Belmonte, is a two-handed kegler and is remembered for making the TV show in the2003 U.S. Open at Fountain Valley.

Las Vegas was the place to be in the first two weeks of Febru-ary, especially if you were a megabuck bowler looking for action.

As soon as the Super Bowl High Roller ended at Sam’s Town,Steve Sanders Super Bowl Mini Eliminator got underway at TheOrleans and the True Amateur Tournament kicked off at Texas Sta-tion. Bowlers were kept busy running back and forth between thetwo sites as they attempted to fatten their wallets.

Sanders used the occasion to hold a press conference and unveilhis latest project. It’s a new professional senior tour called the Gen-erations Bowling Tour, or GB. Why not GBT? a writer asked Sand-ers. He replied, Because it (GBT) was already taken and copyrighted. It stands for Georgia Bank & Trust.

The GB Tour will be comprised of two age divisions: 50-59 and60 & Over. Sanders, the owner and CEO of Pinacle Events, Inc.,plans to begin the inaugural season in early 2006. We will start with20 events, which includes three majors, he said.

Sanders emphasized that his tournament dates will not conflictin any way with the PBA Senior Tour. I am not out to hurt the PBA,he said.

The projected prize fund is $125,000 for regular senior events, with first place worth $16,000. For each major, the prize fund willtotal $232,500 and award $25,000 to the winner. The cashing ratiois 1 in 3. Entry fee will be $400, and it’ll cost an estimated $240 fora one-year membership. And yes, ladies are welcome.

Sanders says the senior stars are ready for the GB Tour. He hasalready gotten glowing testimonials from several senior legends. Here’s what a few of them had to say...

Dick Weber: The Generations Bowling Tour is the perfectcomplement to the Senior PBA Tour. I look forward to competingin future events.(written prior to Weber’s death)

Mark Roth: Finally a Tour that is worth competing in!Johnny Petraglia: I have seen the GBT business plan and it’s a

real winner for senior bowlers, fans, sponsors and proprietors. GBThas my full support.

Dave Soutar: It’s about time Steve (Sanders) announced a Se-nior Tour. I think he will fill every event.

David Ozio: What perfect timing! I just turned 50 and (am)ready to dominate the GBT! I wish it would start sooner!

Teata Semiz: I love the opportunity to bowl in the 60+ division. What a great idea to have two divisions. The GBT has my endorse-ment.

The Generations Bowling Tour, according to a preliminary tour-nament schedule, will start on Jan. 6, 2006 at Cypress Lanes inLake Wales, Fla. No tournaments will be held on the West Coastthe first year, not even in Las Vegas...if you can believe that.

Sanders, who admits he has a passion for the sport of bowling, says Pinacle Events is investing $1 million for the GBT start-up.Now, that’s putting the money where his mouth is!

Playing FieldOwners To HaveVoice In USBC

By Frank KietzLAKE FOREST — Bowling

proprietors will have reps in theproposed new United StatesBowling Congress, at the most, two in each local bowling asso-ciations. In other words the peoplewho control the tenpin playingfield will have a voice in its de-velopment.

Yes, local association boards ofdirectors are finding out about thisdramatic change as they discussthe USBC corporate structure con-trol of tenpin rules, regulations andspecifications with proprietors.

Who controls the playing fieldis only one of the merger problemsto be discussed at the comingMarch 18, 2005 USBC “conven-tion” in Baton Rouge, LA.

Many national, state and localbowling mergees think it will beeasy as punching a few computerkeys.

In 1930-’40’s we here on thePacific Coast worked hard forabout 10 years to get “merged”with the ABC.

Who merged in those years,Pacific Coast Bowling Congress,West Coast BC and the PacificNorth-West BC plus two propri-etor groups and a number of localplayer associations.

What motivated them, thiswriter’s guess: When heavy indus-try moved West many workers(male only) wanted to bowl inABC tournaments and compete onABC certified alleys,

Most of the PCBC certified al-leys (centers) complied withBrunswick (ABC) specs but oth-ers had short alley beds less than60-feet from foul line to head pinor the buildings on 25-foot lotscould not hold 42-inch alleys sothey were called low scoring nar-row 39-inchers, or if the buildingwas ample the higher scoring 45-inchers were installed.

The American Bowling Con-gress was a strict “closed shop”,any ABC member bowling onsanctioned alleys was suspended.

To say the least, it was confus-ing: Bowlers in the early yearswere “picky” league officers, weighed, check pin markings andpin deck spots, provide foul linejudges, post league standings andcurrent averages. Team captainsselected scorekeepers, verifiedplayers, filled out re-cap sheetsand collect bowling fees andmembership dues.

Well, with strong associationand proprietor leaders, develop-ment of semi-automatic and auto-matic pinsetting machines, photofoul line detectors, league sheetservices, etc... even the stubbornproprietor became sanctioned/cer-tified.

Do we still have those old hardliners?

You better believe it. Yup, boththe proprietor, USBCer, openplayers, sport bowlers, seniors, youth, pros, amateurs, perfection-ists and players/owners feelingpressure of modernization they allhave their own agendas.

Mergers in their infancy areeasy prey of opportunists, yes, forsure the old guard player andowner must protect the sport ofAmerican Tenpins—the playingfield must produce a profit and theplayers must enjoy the competi-tion.

It’s possible we can do it in lessthan 10 years.

ATTENTIONBOWLINGLEGENDS

By Don CecilNORWALK — We have lost

the biggest legend in the gameof bowling, Mr. Dick Weber ofthe famed Budweiser’s Immor-tal Team, past All Star Cham-pion-Team, Doubles, Singles;BPAA Champion, out of St.Louis area, survived by hiswonderful wife Juanita, threesons PBA bowler Pete, John,Rich, and one daughter Paula.

In my eyes, over the past 55years I have known “DickieBird” Weber as “Grand Pops” ashe, always called me “Pops”,this Hall of Famer will alwaysbe remembered as the finestgentleman in the game. My heart

goes out to his family. Dickstopped breathing on the way tothe hospital Sunday, the 13th ofFebruary 2005. We will misshim.God bless Mr. Weber.

A big credit to the game ofbowling, along those same lines,we lost another legend in the SanGabriel Valley Bowling Asso-ciation, Mr. Roy Pinchback ofPahrump, NV, passed away onWednesday, the 9th of February.Roy was a friend of mine forabout 40 years, suffering fromDiabetes and Alzheimer’s Dis-ease, was really under a bad con-dition healthwise. Roy was notonly an ardent bowler, but awonderful golfer also. Weplayed together for over 30 yearsaround the San Gabriel Valley. His favorite hangout was theArcadia 3 Par. Along with CarlMarconi, Dom Gaudino andKenny and Bobbi Bauer were

his very closest friends. Roy issurvived by Arlene Hartmanwho was his nurse, companion, caregiver and long time friendof many years. I take my hat offto Arlene doing this for eightyears.

A report on another legendin the San Gabriel Valley, KennyBayer. Still under the weatherwith a bout with Leukemia, andhad a liver infection, still goingback to UCS Kenneth NorrisCancer Center everyday exceptSunday for treatment and surebeen a long haul, but Kenny willmake it, Bobbi and I pray forKenny every day.

Another legend in the SanGabriel Valley, my first timepartner of mine many years agoat Temple City Bowl or bothAlhambra houses in my opinionoutside of Earl Anthony, the bestleft handed bowler I ever knew,

Mr. Billy Myers Sr. Billy beatthem all, of the All Star Cham-pions that came to town. Nowdue to surgery, bowling righthanded at Del Rio Lanes onMonday nights in the baker 920Scratch, Billy will overcome hishandicap and master it.

I guess everybody has won-dered where I’ve been for thepast three weeks; in and out ofthe V.A. Hospital in West LosAngeles. Fluid in my lungs, bronchitis and a very bad coldand cough, in and out twice forfive days periods. I am okaynow, back playing golf andworking on the Legends ofBowling event to be staged inMay weekend after Mother’sDay, May 14th and 15th. To myexpectations, the event is shap-ing up rather well. Next week, the Pro-Am Event special—stayed tuned. God Bless You All.

In the first match of the stepladder, Kerker with 155 average didnot need his handicap as he won 188 to 161 over 174 ave. Audettewho had 3 splits. Audette will get $150.00 for 6th place. Kerkermoved up to face Abakumoff and was beaten 208 to 149 asAbakumoff bowled a clean game without handicap. Kerker paced5th for $175.00.

The 3rd match was between two Team USA members and inprevious match Abakumoff had beaten Ellison. Ellison got even bytreating the crowd with 10 straight strikes and left a 5 pin, andspared for a stepladder finals record 289 game. Abakumoff wholost with a 215 game placed fourth for $200.00.

Against 2nd seed Fuentz in 4th match. Ellison could not catchup with Fuentz’s 79 handicap and lost 190 to Fuentz’s 238 withhandicap. Ellison placed 3rd for $250.00 and Fuentz moved intothe championship finals against Navarro.

Against Fuentz’s 79 handicap, Navarro slowly chipped it downwhile bowling a clean game and Fuentz made 3 errors in fist 5frames. Both doubled in frames 6 and 7 but Fuentz failed to converta 3-10 split in 8th and blew the 9th. In 10th Fuentz struck and made9 to finish with 146/79/225 forcing Navarro to strike in his 10th.Instead Navarro left a 3-10 split which he must convert to win. Hedid that and struck on his fill ball for 203 plus his 25 handicap for228 for the $1,000 prize.

For his 12 games in this event Navarro averaged 221. Fuentzwho will get $500 for his runner-up experience, averaged way overhis 131 book with nearly 170 for 13 games. We are happy to announceour dates of June 26th to July4th for the summer High Roller. For 25 years we have had theadvantage of scheduling usingthe July 4th holiday and thisyear, that is where the bowlingfireworks will be once more!

The 16th annual Super BowlHigh Roller registered morethan 2,500 entries, up from1,600 the previous year. Thegrowth was remarkable due tothe fact that the TAT was alsoup dramatically from the previ-ous year. * 8 of the 24 qualifying squadswere totally filled. * 307 prizes of at least $1,000were distributed in the mainevent and more in the Sweep-ers. * 350 re-entries back into the1st round were awarded. Hun-dreds of players bowled manyre-entries for just $20 each. * over 500 Storm balls weredistributed. 4 different high per-formance balls were available, including the Ace and the newVertigo. * High Roller was able to addprize money to improve thepurse.

Although the event washugely successful, there areways of improving on the for-mat. The age 50 to 59 division, the age 60 & over division andthe 205 Average and Under di-vision will all be improved andwill have guaranteed spots in thefinals. Those divisions will alsobe able to win more of the re-entries that were awarded in theInsurance Program.

But we certainly won’t for-get the 39 & Under and the 40to 49 age Divisions either as theysupported the event tremen-dously. More for them is alsoon the way!

AMATEUR BOWLERS TOUR (ABT) ORANGE 183 Entries @ $30.00 each $5,490 Added by ABT $0 Win, Place, Show $0 Total Paid Out $5,490

WESTMINSTER–Ben-

jamin Laney won his secondAmateur Bowlers Tour (ABT)Championship at WestminsterLanes last Saturday, February 6,2005. It was the conclusion ofa special 2 week tournamentwhere the Classic Division andthe Masters Division bowl to-gether with a special handicapsystem of 80% of 225 for thesetwo weeks with qualifying onSaturday, January 29th and twospecial entry squads on Satur-day, February 5, 2005 (with 1-in-5 entries added to the semi’sfrom each squad), then a 3 gameSemifinals followed by a top 5stepladder Finals. Benjaminwon $1,200 for 1st place and anew black ABT Championshipshirt for his second win.

Scoring was relatively low aswe saw a plus +61 make theSemi’s for the first Saturday andplus +68 make the Semi’s fromthe second Saturday morning’sspecial entry squad. But it tookmuch better scoring to make theTop 5 Finals. A plus +94 wasrequired to make the Top 5 Fi-nals. Our Finals started with atwo pin victory for JeanetteSmitson, 237 to 235, over ArnieSchroeder. In our next match,Jeanette defeated Roger Stites233 to 182 with handicap. Inour Semifinal match JeanetteSmitson couldn’t match thepowerful strike ball of WillieKuo, and she lost by a score of276 to 228 with handicap.Willie now got the opportunityto meet our top seed, BenjaminLaney, for a chance at his firstChampionship title. Willie’s hothand from the Semifinal matchhad definitely cooled off in thisgame though, and Willie fell toBenjamin with a score of 235 to222 with handicap.

Our newest Champion, Ben-jamin Laney, is 27 years old andsingle. He works forAmeriquest as a Mortgage FraudAnalyst. Benjamin has beenbowling for 23 years and sportsa high game of 300 and a 799high series. He currently doeshis league bowling atWestminster Lanes and was us-ing a new Ebonite ball drilled atJohn Ray’s Pro Shop insideWestminster Lanes. Benjaminwould like to thank John Ray fordrilling his new ball and help-ing him with his game. Hewould also like to thank MikeJacoby of Westminster Lanes. In closing, he wanted to say hewas sorry to Michael Garcia, be-cause he had no Pepsi bottle inthe photo. Must be an insidejoke.

During our Semifinal meet-ing Ron Chandler drew the firstchance at the Mystery Pot ofGold score-possibly good forone thousand dollars. Withinmoments we had two bowlersthat were in the optional mys-tery Pot of Gold Pot and shot a219 in Game #3. Fred Ringorand birthday boy-SamCastrovinci split the $1000 andwere very happy with takinghome $500 each. We had oneother bowler that shot a 219 withhandicap in game #3, but he wasnot in the Mystery Pot. Remem-ber, the Mystery Pot of Gold isavailable to all members (Clas-sic and Masters) and only costs$5 for a chance at $1000.

Remember, you still have 4more tournaments left to get inthe required 10 entries for theABT/Storm Spring NationalTournament at Sam’sTown inLas Vegas. The Classic Divisionis paying $40,000 for first place(plus a Progressive Pot) and the

by Randy MyersWeek 7 of Round 3 provided us with a lot of big scores, and

two tight races going into the final week. As mentioned previ-ously in this column, every week is position week so every pincounts. Heading into Week 8, there are six teams with a chanceto capture the Round on side “A”, and side “B” has four teamsstill in the hunt.

On the “A” side, Threadworks used a solid team effort toplug up Reback’s Plumbing 3 games to 1. James “Strike” Makerled Threadworks with his season high set of 730, followed byAnthony Carlton Jr. with 707, Tony “I don’t write when wewin” Rodriguez 661, and Larry Hanken 629. Threadworksbowled well, with Larry’s 198 the only game under deuce.Reback’s were led by the league’s hottest bowler, Jason“Magilla” Carrillo with 720 (his fourth 7 in a row I believe!),Levi Slocum 657, and his brother Scott’s 645. These two teamsbattle it out next week for the round. Team STORM thunderedtheir way to a sweep of ETONIC to move into third place.STORM was led by Herbert Jones 715 and Arnold Cheesmanwith 701. Not to be outdone, Jon Brandon “IRON” left a markon Western Pacific by leading his team to the night’s highesttotal of 2762. Jon and his 2nd best 746 were teamed with HarryWong Jr. 716, Jamie Rovner 672, and David Yamauchi 628.

Bowlers Depot – Lake Forest moved back into contentionby taking 3 from Pro Approach - Downey. All four bowlers man-aged a six for the Depot in a very consistent effort. Steve Salsman654, Don “Miami Vice” Johnson 645, Chris Oakes 644, and PatDanforth 618. Anthony “Droopy” Drapeau paced Pro Approachwith a 652. These two will also square off next week, both need-ing a sweep to have a shot at winning the round. The rest of theaction saw Linder’s Insurance sweep Exacticator Vise despiteChauney Merritt’s fine 717 set. Linder’s were paced by NickSmith and Walter Vasquez with 659 and 645 respectively. Onlyone six was managed by Royal Alliance, a 623 set by RamiroGarcia, but it was enough to take 3 ½ games from America’sLending. Family Amusement didn’t waste time playing gameswith Circle Athletics, sweeping them 4-0 behind the efforts ofArt Ouzenian 663 & Danny Ly 623.

The “B” side is still paced by Transcon Logistics with 23wins as they took 3 from STRIKE CONNECTION. Larry Graywas in the black all night with his fine 731, and Steve Brodefired a nearly perfect 279 3rd game to finish with 665 to pacethe leaders. Frank Barefoot Jr. shot a huge 268 first game tolead his team to its lone win. Frank finished with 674, followedby David Cogswell’s 647. These two round winners will bowlagain next week. Al’s Bar Supply stepped on Boulevard’s Brakes3 games to 1 as Spanky Rosales 673 and Ramon Torres 647 led

Al’s. Jason Hoppe “Go Lucky” tried to stop the skid for the Brakesby shooting 695. The other Round winner, Bowlers Depot – WestCovina swept FREEK RACING with a tremendous team effort, despite a 681 by Kevin “not Randy” Travis. Leonard “Revs” RuizJr. led his team and the league with 245, 289, and 214 for 748. Hewas followed by Rick Hunter 667, Alonzo Lemons 648, and SteveGurrieri 628. They will pair up with Al’s Bar Supply next weeklooking to improve their seeding.

In the real action that will decide this round, T.D. Rowe nearlyswept Pro Approach – Lakewood by firing a real consistent 907,906, and 925 for the night’s second high total. T.D. Rowe goes intothe final night needing only 1 win to lock up a tie for the round. JeffHickenbottom paced the winners with 734, followed by Derek Lee692, Julio Vasquez Jr. 678 and Carlos Castillo 634. Pro Approachblasted a 981 3rd game to avoid the sweep with Billy Myers Jr.leading the way with 278. Everyone bowled well for the Myers Jr.team as Vernon Adams rolled 694, David Fairow Jr. 668, Billy MyersJr. 658, and Paul Smith finished strong for 622. Driver Insuranceput a dent in J.C. Spa’s hopes for the round by winning games 2 and3 on its way to a split. Paul Varela caused the most damage with his693, and was helped by Andy Moran, 622. David Van Gaston shot641 to lead the Spa, who all shot 600, just not big enough. J.C. Spaswill match up with Boulevard Brakes the last night with both teamsneeding a sweep to have a chance.

The rest of the “B” side had Overboost.com turbo blasting TheImmel Team all four despite the efforts of the Bellinder father/daugh-ter combo of Frank and Missy. Frank shot 679 and daughter Missyfollowed with 639. Overboost just had too much power as LawrencePena fired 273/685, Toney Velasco 672, Stanley Taca 638, and DelGuyer 607. In a battle of veteran keglers, Parke Industries knockedoff Prudential-Picarelli 3 games to 1 with Mike Ashby leading theway with 629. Everett Nishikawa managed the only six for Pruden-tial by rolling 646.

Side pot winners were as follows: 1st game: 3 way tie with 248Brandon, Barefoot Jr., & Hickenbottom. 2nd game went to LeonardRuiz Jr. and his 289 with Anthony “Droopy” Drapeau 240 for placemoney. The last game went to Lawrence Pena with 273 thanks toSteve Brode 279 & Billy Myers Jr. with 278 passing on the sidepot. Lawrence may owe them a drink next week after collecting his$485 winnings of both the third game and SUPER pot. LeonardRuiz Jr. held off Jon Brandon “Iron” 748 to 746 to gather in theseries pot. Congratulations to all the winners!

With so many teams vying for the round, next week should beaction packed and exciting. We invite you out to Del Rio Lanes tosee it all in person next Monday night with the action starting at 9pm. Thanks for checking in!

I always enjoy making myvisits to the various leagues topresent our CWBA honor scoresbut this past assignment waspretty special. I was going to co-host the presentation with JohnMiller, the Executive Director ofthe Los Angeles B.A. and wewere honoring a “pretty special”lady, Lori Yamasaki, a memberof the Japan League at AMF ElDorado Bowl, Westchester. Be-ing a married woman, mother ofa boy 5 and a girl 7, who worksaway from home; is involved inthe children’s school and sports;as well as the bowling arena, thisis the only league Lori finds timeto bowl in. However, it does of-fer Lori time to share theevening with husband Ken, whois the League Secretary.

Lori bowled her most recent“300” game during tournamentplay of the Tozai Nikkel atFountain Bowl and receivedfrom John the ABC “300” honorring. I had the pleasure of pre-senting Lori the WIBC “300"Ring of her choice, set with aRuby and six Diamonds and ourCWBA Sterling Silver Neck-lace, set with a Black Pearl andthree Diamonds.

Lori Ann (Morihiro)Yamasaki is not a stranger to thebowling arena here in Califor-nia and has been in the spotlightsince 1976 when she joined theyouth bowling program at Holi-day Bowl, Los Angeles. In thatsame year, she was awarded theEd Hough Memorial Award forthe most improved junior aver-age. She became a Youth Leaderand was recruited to the JuniorAmateur Tour Farm Club andeventually qualified for the JATsquad. She received numeroustitles including her first “300”game. While attending Califor-nia State University LongBeach, Lori was received withopen arms to the Campus bowl-ing team and elected Team Cap-tain and later under her tutoringas their “Coach”, the team wonthe league championship. Sheholds fond memories of 1986-1987 when she traveled to Ja-pan to represent her universityin competition and captured theoverall women’s champion title.

Lori has been a member ofthe Los Angeles WBA sincejoining her first adult leagues, competing in all their AnnualChampionship Tournaments.Among her many titles, she wasa member of the Classic Divi-sion Championship Team inyears 2002,2003,2004..

Lori has been a member ofthe Western Women Profes-sional Bowlers (WWPB) since1995. In that same year, she

earned the “Rookies of the Year”title with five finals in seventournaments, with two top fivefinishes. The following year,Lori was elected to their Boardof Directors. Because of her evi-dent leadership skills, Lori cur-rently holds the office of Presi-dent, a position she was electedto in 1998. She is responsible forwriting all WWPB Press Re-leases to statewide bowling pub-lications, advertisement of theirtournament schedule, and tour-nament related human intereststories.

While participating in the1995 California WBA AnnualQueens Tournament, Loriscored the tournament highgame of “300” and reached herpersonal 3-game high series tothat date, a 791.

Lori holds numerous titlesfrom Nikkei Games; TozaiNikkei Tournament; and Japa-nese American National Bowl-ing Association (JANBA) Tour-nament, the latter which holdsvery special memories fromyear 2003, when her team re-ceived the WIBC NationalAward for the highest game(1251) and the highest series(3428) for a 5-woman team inthe nation.

In 2001 Lori volunteeredprofessional bowling instruc-tions for Palos Verdes Bowl2001 Bowling Expo, all ofwhich led her to the develop-ment and coordination of theWWPB/Palos Verdes Bowl In-structional Bowling Clinic andPro-Am in 2002 and 2003. In2004, Lori organized the inclu-sion of Yorba Linda Bowl in thisschedule.

In 2002 Lori was named tochair the advisory committee forSt. John’s Hospital JimmyStewart Relay Marathon Profes-sional Bowling Fundraiser, tobenefit the St. John’s HospitalChild Development Center. In2003, she again was named asan advisor on the St. John’sHealth Center’s Annual Celeb-rity Golf Classic to representprofessional bowling.

Well, this is just a little bit ofwhat Lori does for the bowlingarena, and along the way picksup another notch on the totempole for herself. But, what-ever Lori takes on, you can al-ways see her “support team” ather side; her wonderful husbandKen, and two children, Stefaniand Jayson. The children will berewarded for all their patienceand good behavior, however.Lori will eventually gift, Jaysonwith the ABC Ring and Stefanithe one from WIBC. Ken? He’salways ready with the camera.

Girls Jr.All Stars

by David GordonCOVINA - The Girls Jr. All-

Stars held their most recent ses-sion at Brunswick Covina Lanesthis past Sunday. As well as thenormal bowling session, we in-troduced an Adult/Jr Doublestournament - an Adult “Wipe-Out” tournament - and an Adult4-game Scratch tournament.

These tournament(s) wereintended as a fund-raiser andlike many things for the firsttime, some very important les-sons were learned. We thank themanagement of Covina Lanesfor your accommodations. All ofthe above was based solely onthe four games the ladies andadults threw.

We were able to spread outthe six teams of young ladiesover 12 lanes and assign oneadult to each girl. The adultsseem to really enjoy themselvestrying to keep up with the girlsand from the adult viewpoint thetournament(s) was a big success.I’m not so sure when it comesto the ladies as the scoring wasa little down than normal. It mayhave been because of the distrac-tion in watching the adults orthat they did not have the oneon one competition against otherleague members. I’ll try to gettheir opinion when we return toleague play. And to top it all offthe Girls Jr. All-Stars held aValentine’s Day Basket Rafflewith 12 gorgeous baskets for thetaking.

We want to congratulate allthe winners and a very big thankyou to all of our girls and par-ents for the make-up of thesebaskets and overall support to allof our fund-raising effortsthroughout the season. Thankyou!

In the league session wefound Katie McClelland leadingthe way for the third straightsession. Katie posted up a 228/754. Nice bowling. Followingwas substitute and alumniTheresa Rusas with 256-200/742. Other highs on the daywere from Melissa Pena 201/721, Tabetha Reynolds 213/707,Jilian Zlateff 702, Arisha Piper212, Darylynn Davis 207,Deanna Carrillo 205 andAmanda Daniels 204.

In the team standings, JustChill Entertainment padded theirlead by taking 19 of 25 pointsover ThreadWorks Embroidery.Bowling News andBowlCheap.com both captured17 points and that was enoughto push Bowling News into thesecond place spot with only foursessions to go.

As for the tournaments. Inthe Adult/Jr Hdcp Doubles“WipeOut” a surprise as AngelaMorales teamed up with leagueassistant Chris Gordon to cap-ture first place with 1274 pins.Second place went to sub DeeDee Ho and Philip Lebaquinwith 1239 and third was KatieMcClelland and Carla Moon at1223. For the Adult Hdcp“WipeOut”, Chris Gordonclaimed first place here as wellwith 691, taking advantage ofthrowing out a 109 game.

Lebaquin took second with684 and Mark Divis capturethird at 630. And for the bigadult averages in the Adult 4-game scratch, we have Lebaquinposting a 790 series, while LarryDaniels 769 and Mike McDow768, to claim their honors.Awards are waiting for the firstplace in each tournament andrecognition certificates will behanded out to the 2nd and 3rdplaces. All in all a big success!

The ladies are taking a mini-vacation for the rest of Febru-ary for city tournament and theCSC in Fresno. We will be meet-ing up on March 6th atBrunswick West Covina Lanes, ready for the home stretch. La-dies, enjoy your time off to restpractice and Oh Yeah, party alittle. Those of you bowling SFVCity tournament, I’ll see you atJewel City Bowl this comingSunday morning (8:15 am). MOUNTAIN TIMEBy DICK STOEFFLER

LAS VEGAS, NV - Checkin’ on notes from the stack of stuff: *Like several others on Super Bowl Sunday, I was glued to the TVbefore, during and after the game. Superb battle, even if we lost ourparlay of New England (-7 to the “overs” (48). Lost a bet! Whatelse is new? While Deion Branch was awarded the MVP title, itcould have easily gone to a defensive guy this year: Mike Vrabel orRodney Harrison, or, to my favorite ...Tedy Bruschi.

* Wouldn’t you think some beer company would be all overBruschi for an endorsement? Like: “Bruschi’s brew-ski is ... Miller!”It’s perfect. Of course, the NFL ... No Fun League ... would prob-ably quash the deal. They won’t even take an ad from Las Vegas fora hotel room ... someone might become a gambling addict orsome-thing. Like NOBODY bets on their product? Who doesn’t?

* If you want to bowl HIGH scores ... move to Pennsylvania.Remember the recent phantom 900? IT was a Pennsylvania prod-uct.Now comes Shane Tetterton from a high school in that state. He’s ajunior. According to Sports Illustrated (2/14/05), “Shane bowledSIX honor scores (games of 298, 299 or 300) in as mamy highschool matches and had back-to-back 800-plus series, which is aU.S.high school first. During that run, he had FOUR PER-FECTGAMES!!”

* Nice. I guess. Frankly, I’d call it a “crock.” Apparently thisperformance was observed by other bowlers and spectators ... nottaking place in a dark back alley someplace between 3:15 and 3:33a.m.... as did the “unusual” 900. But, I do not see a shred of good infiascos such as this. It only harms bowling, even if it did get him amention in SI. One must assume the achievement was phoned intothe USBC, which, sight unseen, I’m certain, approved the thing.

other dynamic moment for bowling and the brain-dead govern-ing bodies that “lead” us! Ditto for the conniving proprietor whowould “wall-up” such a condition to make “my center score evenMORE than the 900 joint!”

* I get so trickled-off by stuff like that ...I forgot my next item!* Oh, yeah! Why doesn’t the ABC II ...er...USBC approve ste-roids?Think of the magic scores we could get then!!!

* Comes “Oscar” night, Jamie Foxx for best actor; “Ray” forbest movie. Maybe it was the music, but THAT had to be as good asany flick I’ve ever seen.

* Life for the top notch senior bowlers could be getting muchbetter in the next few months. Steve Sanders, he of Megabuck fame,is readying a heavy duty tour for the Seniors that appears to haveall the makings of a winner.

* Chinese New Year has arrived. This year is now called “theYear of the Rooster!” It used to have a different name ‘til thepoliti-cally correct nutcups got hold of it. Hmmm. “Rooster-doodle-do, Rooster-doodle-do!” just doesn’t get the job done.

* The PBA TV show has been abysmal this year. The first coupleof weeks it sounded like an infomercial. Since then it has gonewhacko with “trick shots.” Wait until o e of the stars hurts his bowl-ing hand or arm while trying to toss 3 or 4 balls at once. Who’segonna pay THAT bill, Mr. (Steve) Miller? Hey! Let the greatestbowlers of the PBA play the real game ... that is the only decentpart of the program ... and figure out how to get the equivalent offour matches, as it used to be. (The finale should be a two-gameaffair, total pins, if you want the solution.) We don’t tune in to hearthe blather of a Q & A with the bowlers, nor do we watch screwballtricks. I have never heard so many long-time viewers saying thatthey have quit tuning in at all, or turn off the show after ten orfifteen minutes because the show’s become a gabfest. “Change”can be fine, Mr. Miller, but not when it is ruining your product ...and bowling along with it.
