Any company with over 20 employees is required by law to register with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation. In the Union Budget 2016-17, the finance minister had proposed to impose tax on 60% of accumulations in the EPF after April 1, 2016 while remaining 40 percent would be tax free . This decision was criticised by Opposition parties and by employee unions. Government has decided to take back its decision.
