Solemnidad del Santisimio Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo

Lecturas para la Próxima Semana

Junio 10, 2018

2 Corintios 4:13-5:1 Marcos 3:20-35

As Fr. Robert mentions elsewhere in this bulletin, have you noticed a change in the way we conduct the Procession of the Gifts? Silly us, as sometimes happens in a large organization, we (the Pastoral Team) thought the symbolism would be obvious. By the questions and quizzical looks, this change is not as self-explanatory as we thought it was.

So, here’s the story. The procession of the bread and wine which will become for us our spiritual food and drink has always been solemn, reverent, and a focal point. Often, the third part of the procession seems an afterthought. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the stage directions for celebrating Mass, calls for the procession of the gifts to include at a minimum, the bread and wine, carried by members of the assembly, and at a maximum, bread, wine, and the monetary collection. No order for these elements is given or prescribed (GIRM 73). The symbolism here is that in the early days of the church, the bread and wine were literally provided by the people, often by the host of the home Mass. And we hear in Saint Paul’s letters and the Acts of the Apostles that the community supported each other financially by holding all property and possessions in common. Your monetary offering still provides the bread and wine as well as all the needs of the parish—lights, janitorial service, linens, salaries, etc. Your monetary offerings also support the community in your gifts to Saint Joseph Family Center. So, what’s old is new and what’s new has been our practice since the beginning. We have moved the monetary collection to first in the procession. As the priest receives it, he blesses it and the bearer. This is then placed in its usual spot on the sanctuary. Next come the bread and wine, the reception by the priest, and the blessing of the bearers. Thus, your financial gift is honored in similar fashion to the bread and wine which you provide. The whole procession is a solemn, reverent focal point. Rose Barry, Pastoral Associate

Another Change We offer three opportunities for Adoration of the Exposed Blessed Sacrament: First Fridays, every Tuesday, 7:00-8:00pm, and Sunday afternoons, 1:00-5:00pm. Of course, you may always offer adoration, though the Blessed Sacrament will be behind the veil of the tabernacle at other times. We even leave the inner chapel doors open so that you may gaze upon the tablernacle even when the chapel is closed. Due to waning interest in this medieval practice, our First Friday adoration will now run from 2:30-3:30pm, directed by our Divine Mercy/Divina Misercordia group.

Weekend Liturgy Questions/Comments — 6/3/18 1. The Body of Christ can take many forms and we experience it in

many ways. Why is the Sacrament of the Eucharist so central to our faith?

2. When we gather as the Church, we are the living Body. When we receive Communion, we participate in the Body, and when we live out our baptismal call, we are being the Body of Christ in the world.

3. In each of the ways that the Body of Christ takes shape, we consider the presence of Christ. When we share Christ with others, we should be mindful of our presence in that moment of sharing.

Saint Joseph Family Center and the

Compassion Center

These volunteer-supported, bare bones non-profit organizations work hard all year round to provide temporary or more permanent solutions to homelessness, one person at a time. SJFC provides a range of services including fresh produce on Mondays, weekly grocery bags, job counseling, housing help, and case management to help people continue on a sober path to full integration in our society. Gilroy Compassion Center (GCC) provides an indoor hang out and rest stop so folks don’t have to spend all day as well as all night out in the elements. They provide laundry and showers, hot coffee, and limited snacks. There’s a comfy TV lounge and phone for clients’ use. The spacious warehouse is full of neatly displayed, sorted, and sized clothing and shoes. They always accept pet food, too, for our furry, homeless friends. Thanks to all who work at these organizations and all who donate to the cause.
