Sister M. Adele Francis Gorman, O.S.F., historian for the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, examined the arguments. Alava argued there was not enough food for both French and Spanish in Florida; the French were not regular soldiers, therefore they met pirates’ deaths; they were preaching evil doctrines to the natives; they outnumbered the Spanish, therefore, it was a matter of survival, and, there were not enough ships to send them home. Sister Gorman’s research found there was food suf- ficient to last, with rationing, until January 1566, and Menendez had already sent to Spain for more supplies. In addition, supplies brought to Fort Caroline were still in the fort until Menendez ordered its burning. The piracy argument could be valid, as well as the intruders preaching evil doctrines. Prime goals of Menendez’ mission were to drive the protestant French from land claimed by Spain, and instruct the natives in Catholicism. There were 500 French survivors, including about 440 men. Menendez had approximately 200 men to care for twice as many French captives. Menendez claimed that he had not enough ships to send all the French prisoners back to their country. But placing a full load of French on one captured French ship would have diminished the unevenness in ratio. It is almost impossible to find an unbiased recount- ing by eyewitnesses, Sister Gorman concludes. Was Matanzas Massacre Justified? One in a series of historic features as St. Augustine prepares for

its 450th Anniversary in 2015.Spanish Ambassador Francisco de Alava listed five

reasons why St. Augustine Founder Pedro Menendezwas justified in putting hundreds of French soldiers todeath at Matanzas Inlet after capturing the French FortCaroline in September, 1565. Sister M. Adele FrancisGorman, O.S.F., historian for the Sisters of St. Francisof Philadelphia, examined the arguments.

Alava argued there was not enough food for bothFrench and Spanish in Florida; the French were notregular soldiers, therefore they met pirates’ deaths;they were preaching evil doctrines to the natives; theyoutnumbered the Spanish, therefore, it was a matter ofsurvival, and, there were not enough ships to sendthem home.

Sister Gorman’s research found there was food suf-ficient to last, with rationing, until January 1566, andMenendez had already sent to Spain for more supplies. In addition, supplies brought to Fort Caroline were stillin the fort until Menendez ordered its burning.

The piracy argument could be valid, as well as theintruders preaching evil doctrines. Prime goals ofMenendez’ mission were to drive the protestant Frenchfrom land claimed by Spain, and instruct the natives inCatholicism.

There were 500 French survivors, including about440 men. Menendez had approximately 200 men tocare for twice as many French captives. Menendezclaimed that he had not enough ships to send all theFrench prisoners back to their country. But placing afull load of French on one captured French ship wouldhave diminished the unevenness in ratio.

It is almost impossible to find an unbiased recount-

ing by eyewitnesses, Sister Gorman concludes. Herresearch found “a number of discrepancies whichmight easily alter what appear to be valid conclu-sions.”

New Apartment A property manager of single-family residence was

showing a unit to prospective tenants and asking the usualquestions.

“Professionally employed?” he asked. “We’re a military family,” the wife answered. “Children?” “Oh, yes, ages nine and twelve,” she answered proudly. “Animals?” “Oh, no,” she said earnestly. “They’re very well

behaved.”

Colonial Weapon Found AmongShipwreck ArtifactsContributed by Beau Phillips

Excitement filled the room at the Flagler HospitalImaging Center when the Lighthouse ArchaeologicalMaritime Program visited after hours for a sneak peakat items they excavated from a recently discovered18th century shipwreck. The celebration was palpablewhen the center’s CAT scanner revealed a flintlockpistol.

Twenty-five items were scanned with the hospitalsGE Lightspeed 16-slice CAT scanner, including thestony concretion that revealed the pistol.

Chuck Meide, Lighthouse Archaeological Directorexplains, “underthe sea, a concre-tion is most oftena concrete-likemass that formsaround metal arti-facts as they beginto rust.” By peer-ing inside the con-cretion and virtually extracting an artifact from itsaccumulated exoskeleton, conservators can determinethe best approach to avoid damaging the piece and theinformation it holds.

According to Meide, imaging the artifacts is a nec-essary part of the process. “Flagler Hospital’s help isvital,” Meide explained; “we know they can’t do thisvery often or for everyone but we are very thankful. Itis incredibly important that we are able to formulate aplan before removing these pieces from their stonyconcretions.” Kathy Fleming, the First Light MaritimeSociety’s Executive Director echoed that appreciation,“the Board of Trustees and the senior staff at the muse-um and archaeology program are eternally grateful toFlagler Hospital for their spirit of community. Thesesmall, hidden artifacts tell our area’s story and histo-ry.”
