Third Sunday of Easter - 10th April 2016 ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead, he is not here, he has been raised to new life?’ The Gospel we hear today describes how an encounter with the risen Lord transforms these fishers of fish into fishers of people and so ‘re-founds’ the core community of the Church around the pastoral role of Peter. It is the large number of fish on the other side, where previously on the port side there had been none, which sparks off the faith of the disciples who come to recognise in the distant figure on the shore the presence of the risen Lord. Whilst the first reading today describes the leadership of the Church giving witness to the events that surround Jesus’ death and resurrection: ‘We are witnesses of these words, and so is the Holy Spirit’ and the second reading lifts the eyes of the persecuted, suffering Church to the heavenly triumph of Christ who is the impulse and guarantee of its mission: ‘The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy to be given power, wealth, glory, and blessing’. the account of the meal in the Gospel to which Jesus invites the disciples (us) takes on Eucharistic overtones in the phrase: he took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish’ and introduces the nucleus of this new Church, the community which, in the coming time of the physical absence of her Lord, will celebrate and experience in the Eucharist the on-going hospitality of God that the disciples have received from Jesus. This hospitality of God is extended beyond the meal on the beach on the shores of Galilee and those of us caught up in the net of God's love are heirs to the same promises of Jesus’ fidelity. But herein lies the crunch: Jesus continues to send us out to tell people of the place that has been prepared for us all at the banquet of life and he gives us strength to gird our loins for the times when life takes us to places we would rather not go. Third Sunday of Easter - 10th April 2016

‘Why do you look for the living among the dead, he is not here, he has

been raised to new life?’

The Gospel we hear today describes how an encounter with the risen Lord

transforms these fishers of fish into fishers of people and so ‘re-founds’ the

core community of the Church around the pastoral role of Peter. It is the large

number of fish on the other side, where previously on the port side there had

been none, which sparks off the faith of the disciples who come to recognise in

the distant figure on the shore the presence of the risen Lord.

Whilst the first reading today describes the leadership of the Church giving

witness to the events that surround Jesus’ death and resurrection:

‘We are witnesses of these words, and so is the Holy Spirit’

and the second reading lifts the eyes of the persecuted, suffering Church to

the heavenly triumph of Christ who is the impulse and guarantee of its

mission:

‘The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy to be given power, wealth,

glory, and blessing’.

the account of the meal in the Gospel to which Jesus invites the disciples (us)

takes on Eucharistic overtones in the phrase:

‘he took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish’

and introduces the nucleus of this new Church, the community which, in the

coming time of the physical absence of her Lord, will celebrate and experience

in the Eucharist the on-going hospitality of God that the disciples have

received from Jesus.

This hospitality of God is extended beyond the meal on the beach on the

shores of Galilee and those of us caught up in the net of God's love are heirs

to the same promises of Jesus’ fidelity.

But herein lies the crunch: Jesus continues to send us out to tell people of the

place that has been prepared for us all at the banquet of life and he gives us

strength to gird our loins for the times when life takes us to places we would

rather not go. Tricia Ryan, Parishioner.
