PRINCIPAL’S WELCOMEM R S K I M W I C K H A M

Last year, we introduced a new event into the College Calendar. Entitled the ‘Ceremony of Excellence’, the event was inspired by Mother Gonzaga Barry’s maxim to “Aim at something excellent-our ideals often make our realities”. The third pillar of the College Strategic Plan, 2018-2021 incorporates the goal to “celebrate and value the contribution and achievements of each student”. While it is clear the College already does this across a variety of events, the aim was to ensure our community could acknowledge and celebrate the many achievements of our students across diverse domains.

We recognised excellence across a range of endeavours: sporting, cultural, academic and service. We also announced a number of Special Awards, named in honour of significant figures in the history of the College. Additionally, awards for academic improvement and for “all-rounders” were introduced. Through such awards, we sought to recognise the holistic nature of a Loreto education and to celebrate our students’ many talents.

Given the significance of this event in College history, a musical work was commissioned by local composer, Alexander Voltz. With lyrics by Anne Muirhead, Director of Mission, Loreto Ministries Limited, Beyond the Shores was performed by Concert Band One and the Senior Choir, augmented by some past pupils who gave generously of their time. Anne’s evocative lyrics provided a springboard for Alexander’s musical imagery.

The College also recognised, for the very first time, our inaugural Outstanding Loreto College Coorparoo Alumnus and Young Alumnus Award Winners. I thank all nominees for their submissions.

These awards recognise, acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of Loreto past pupils across areas such as professional careers, business, research, government, social justice, sporting and contributions to the community at either a local, state, national or international level. Each award winner will be acknowledged on an Honour Board, to be placed in the Mary Ward Centre. I thank the Loreto Past Pupils’ Association for their generous donation of the Board.

We commenced 2020 with two significant events, our Semester 1 Mass, where traditionally, we explore the virtue for the year. In 2020, we will explore the theme of verity, so relevant in an age where social media is dominated by photoshop, filters and fake news. Our Academic Awards Assembly was held in February this year. This event is now held bi-annually, with the purpose of acknowledging and celebrating both students’ academic achievement and/or academic growth over the previous semester. I congratulate all recipients of these awards.

We know, more than ever, the importance of positive role models for adolescent females. As we navigate current challenges such as the COVID-19 crisis and consider future challenges, it is vital that we acknowledge that it is our students who have the capacity to solve these. There is research which shows that when girls engage with strong female role models, their perception that they too can achieve in a particular area improves significantly. Award winners and photos of these special events can be found on pages 6-10.

The capacity of our students and staff in the face of current challenges is now being tested through the COVID-19 pandemic. While the start of 2020 has been a testing time, I

am so proud of the work that our teachers have undertaken in preparing a model of blended online learning. Our students are also rapidly adapting to a changed format. With the same innovative approach toward education modelled by Mary Ward, our teachers are developing new skills and digital pedagogies. We are calling our model ViT@L (Virtual Integrated Teaching at Loreto) which sees the integration of a number of platforms including the College LMS, Microsoft Teams, and OneNote. We have adapted ViT@L to also include other aspects of College life: the school assembly, music concerts and lessons, sports training, fitness challenges, the cross country and counselling services. Even the holiday hymn went ‘virtual’ at the end of Term 1.

Of course, the impact of COVID-19 across our community is deep and widespread. The College has set up LoC@L, (Linking our Community at Loreto). The purpose of this platform is to facilitate links between those in our community who need support and those who may be able to provide assistance. I encourage our parents to access this through our Parent Portal. We are aware of the significant impact the pandemic is having on many families who own small businesses and we are advertising these through our Parent Portal.

As the COVID-19 crisis continues and we make significant changes to the way we approach education and, more broadly, to how we interact as a community, I believe it is now that we are called to consider two things: how we live and what matters most. I draw your attention to Mary Ward’s words:

Act not out of fear, but solely from love.

Aim at something excellent - our ideals often make our realities

OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS Margaret Little

Margaret graduated from the College in 1981 having attended Loreto for her whole schooling, commencing in 1969. She studied Medicine at the University of Queensland but soon moved to the UK where she worked as a Paediatric Oncologist undertaking clinical research in paediatric oncology. She was also appointed as a Senior Research Fellow with the Leukaemia Research Fund at the University of Newcastle. In 2002, she was awarded a PhD in Cellular Pharmacology.

Since that time, Margaret has worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital and at the Queensland Children’s Hospital as a senior staff specialist in paediatric haematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation. She also has significant expertise in bone marrow transplantation. She has published research in esteemed journals such as the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health. She has made a significant contribution in the philanthropic world through her position as a Director on the Board of the Make a Wish Foundation. This charity partners with sick children, their families and medical teams to grant wishes as unique as the children who imagine them. Since 1985, the foundation has delivered more than 10,000 life-changing wishes to sick children.

Additionally, she has also held a membership of the board of directors on the Jack and Madeline Little Research Fund. This fund is used to support medical research around women’s cancers in indigenous Australians. She continues to support the children’s hospital through her participation in events such as the Channel 9 Telethon.

FAREWELL TO THE CLASS OF 2020Good morning special guests, parents and our friends,

My name is Sarah Stockley, and together with Maddison Bell, as College Captains, we welcome you here today to mark this special occasion. We thank you for joining us to celebrate our graduation from Loreto College, the end of another year and an entire schooling era for our year 12 students. Every year Loreto schools dedicate one particular Mary Ward virtue to be the focus for the upcoming year, either Sincerity, Verity, Felicity, Freedom or Justice. At the beginning of this year, at our inaugural mass, we introduced Sincerity as the virtue of 2019.

We explained that Sincerity is the absence of pretence, deceit or hypocrisy. It is to delight in our own diversity, embrace our uniqueness and remain transparent in times of hardship. Being sincere with ourselves means living our lives in a manner that we know is right and being courageous enough to stand for our morals no matter what the world around us says.

However, through this year we have discovered that Sincerity is much more than this. Sincerity is to stand up for yourself, for who you are and your unique authenticity. It is to be who you are without fear of judgement. Embrace yourself in your true form, to love yourself and love who you want, to be passionate about what you believe in and to be authentic in every sense of the word. The extension of this is to be inclusive and accepting of others, offering them the same opportunity to live as their authentic selves too.

At the beginning of this year, we stood here, as we are today, and spoke of our one goal for our girls this year was to live by this virtue, acting in every moment in a manner they believed to be right and just. We encouraged girls to follow their passions, trust their heart, and stand for justice every day, and we are proud of the effort taken by students to put this value into action. We thank you girls for embracing the gift of sincerity and hope this continues into next year, the year of Verity, living as your true selves within our school community and beyond.

We would like to offer our thanks to those who have supported us throughout this journey. We give thanks to our Year-Coordinator, Mrs Kearney for your constant support, and to our teachers for recognising the potential in each of us and encouraging us to strive to achieve the best of our ability. We thank those who work behind the scenes in our Loreto community, who make up the fabric of our day to day lives, enhance our learning and our experience at the College. Your efforts are truly appreciated and we will miss you.

As we celebrate the graduating class of 2019, we celebrate all that they have stood for, and all that they are. Since Year 8 we have grown from shy, quiet girls to strong, brave, articulate Loreto women, shaped by the lessons of our school and the values of Mary Ward.

We now can ask ourselves what sort of Loreto women do we want to be as we leave these gates for the last time? We are women of curiosity. Of discernment in thought and in action. We are inclusive and kind, offering

our circle of friends to those in need, always. We now know that with privilege comes responsibility, that we have the power to speak for those without a voice, to fight for those who cannot act for themselves and to embrace the diversity of all. We will do this with felicity, a joyous nature and a passion to make change.

For our Loreto journey has not only been about our marks, it has not been about creating the perfect Maths, English or Geography assignment. These past five years have been the process of choosing to be part of a tradition that for centuries has encouraged the power and voice of women with passion and faith, who in time will come to do much. For each of you are “Seekers of truth and doers of justice” capable of changing this world however you deem fit. Each of you is a powerful, strong woman, brave and smart enough to see a problem and find a solution. As women we can lead with courage and humility, because when women come together, uplifting and encouraging each other, we hold the power to change the world.

As we leave today, we know that we will face new adventures and new challenges, in a world of inequality and injustice. As Loreto women of sincerity, justice and truth, we have the duty to continue the 400 year old tradition of Mary Ward women. One that needs us to stand together as women, to work to improve the lives of all. The world is in need of the power that I know is contained within this hall. Each of you is a future leader and a world changer. Speak. Act for what you believe in. Our school has equipped you with the necessary values and tools you need to take this world head on. So do not be afraid, know that you stand on the sacrifices of millions of women before you, women who had dreams of a better future, with equal rights for women and children and shared opportunity for all. As you leave and embark on the next chapter of your life, ask yourself, what can I do to make this mountain taller so the women after me can see further.

Each year the graduating class offers the school a gift. This year we have given a mirror with mosaic art surrounding the boarders, created by the same talented artist who designed the artwork near Babylon and our chapel. This artwork will be placed next to the exit door of student reception, so as each girl leaves, you can look at your reflection in the mirror and remind yourself to always be “such as you appear and appear such as you are.” As you enter the year of Verity, the year of truth, remember that Sincerity remains in every aspect of your Loreto life. When you pass this mirror and see your reflection, let it serve as a constant reminder to always live as your true selves.

Dina (Lourdes) Bassile (2014) is an Access Consultant and started her own business, Tibi, almost two years ago. Tibi was created to open up live music gigs and events of all sizes to everyone and to improve the recognition and removal of barriers faced by people with disabilities. Dina moved to Melbourne early in 2019 and has created workshops to inform and educate creative industry workers on how to make their spaces, events and

shows more accessible. Dina says, “Overall, I’ve had great feedback from industry people as well as the disabled community. I want to get the message out there that we, too, like to go out and have fun.”

Hannah Radvan (2014) and Riley Nibbs (2013) have recently graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science with Honours.

Felicity Kleinschmidt (Bruce 2015) has launched her art website, Felicity Celeste Art, with Etsy. Felicity studied art at Loreto for five years and recently completed her tertiary studies. Felicity says, “All art is unique, as are you and as am I, as is every spec of colour, inanimate object and breathing creation on this earth. Even the mass-produced product receives its own scars and travels eventually on a different path to its clone. This is what I hope to capture in my art - to reveal

creation and its scars as I walk the narrow road and pray others find it as well.” You can find her website on Facebook at Felicity Celeste Art and on Instagram @felicityceleste.art.

Madeleine Little (2012) was honoured at the National Arts and Disability Awards held on 3 December in Canberra. Arts Access Australia presented Madeleine with its inaugural Arts Access Australia National Leadership Award ($10,000) to recognise and support new and emerging leaders in the arts who identify as being deaf or disabled. (Creative Arts) through University of Southern Queensland, researching accessible theatre practice. In 2018, Madeleine received an Arts Access Australia Meeting Place travel grant, and she was also the inaugural recipient of Arts Access Victoria’s Stella Young Award. She is dedicated to a disability-led future, with a mission to pursue greater opportunities, resources, advocacy and recognition for all Deaf and disabled artists and arts workers in Australia.

Frances Williams (1987) recently appointed as new Justice to the Supreme Court Trial Division.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath announced the appointment and said Frances has built a highly successful legal career spanning almost three decades. PAST PUPILS’ REUNIONClass of 2009 - 10yrs Class of 1989 - 30yrs

The Class of 1989 celebrated their 30 Year Reunion on Saturday 12 October.

The event was held at Mrs Brown’s Bar and Kitchen at Newstead. 48 women from the Class of ’89 attended and it was a fantastic and happy occasion. We have vowed to catch up more often!

Ladies flew in from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the beautiful Antonia McCahon deserves a special mention as she came all the way from Paris! Meg Ferrett (Hickey)
