Sermon Title: I Am Second

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 9:1-13

Small Group Text: 2 Samuel 9:1-13 & Matt. 25:31-46

As Christ-followers, we are required to love God and to love others.

Loving “others” who are in our immediate social context is our

common response to this challenge. But what about “others” with

whom we have little or no social contact? Who are some “others” you

don’t even think about and never have the occasion to love? Today’s

story will teach us to move outside of our immediate social context

and reminds us of our commitment to help people most destitute and

without hope. What a novel idea: that we would move outside our

social context and make a difference in the life of someone we would

otherwise never meet.

Read 2 Samuel 9:1-13

1. What commitment did David remember when he was established in

the kingship of Israel? (9:1)

2. Where did David find Jonathan’s son living? (9:4-5)

3. What attitude did Mephibosheth assume toward David when they

met? How did he expect to be treated by David? (9:6,8)

4. What promises did David make to Mephibosheth? (9:7)

5. What commands did David give to Ziba concerning Mephibosheth?

(9:9-10)

6. What kind of treatment did Mephibosheth receive in David’s house?

(9:11)

1. Why is it a greater honor to ask someone to eat with you than to

simply give him or her a meal? (9:10)

2. What would you say to someone who claims to love Christ and yet

neglects the marginalized members of our society?

3. David inquired. (9:1) But what can you do to discover your

“Mephibosheth,” i.e., a person you’ve yet to meet but who is in

desperate need of your love and assistance?

4. The circumstances of life can take a toll on a person’s self esteem.

Our response to them can either build them up, or confirm their

low-esteem. This week, what will you do to help someone realize

they are not a “dead dog” but a valued person loved by God?

5. Would you like to follow David’s example and inquire about ways to

help? Here’s a suggestion:

Touching Miami with Love is starting a Saturday morning

tutoring program to help kids excel in school. Tutoring will take

place at TML on Saturdays from 10:00am - 11:30am for about 10

to 15 students. If you, or someone in your group - or maybe your

whole group - would like to make a difference in the life of a

child, join "Tutoring Time."
