Symbols, designations and general drawing methodsOrientationThis version differs from version 6 through the following changes. Symbols and designations giving examples from and further references to the following standards have been transferred from STD 5023,503: STD 5026,1 Coordinate systems for heavy vehicles (section 6.1) STD 5032,2 Documentation requirements (section 11) STD 5061,1 ISO system of limits and fits (section 7.1) STD 5081,25 External taper metric screw threads (section 14) STD 5081,45 Asymmetrical trapezoidal screw threads of plastic material (section 14) Some symbols which previously were established by STD 5023,503 have also been transferred to section 16 of this standard where they now are presented and established. A symbol giving example from RT standard 00.10.4007 Marking on drawings for products, assemblies or parts subject to regulations, has been transferred from the RT standard 01.00.4527 and is now included in section 10. Through the above changes, this standard is now replacing STD 5023,503 and RT standard 01.00.4527 and accordingly all texts which previously were dealing with the use of either of these two standards in combination with this standard have now been deleted. In addition to the above changes, examples of symbols and designations from and a reference to STD 101-0008 Symbols and designations for moulded parts, has been added to the new section 15 and in section 13, the example of symbolic representation of weld has been supplemented with an example of a weld number. The previous reference to ISO 129:1985 has been replaced by a reference to ISO 129-1:2004.

1 Scope and field of applicationThis standard contains graphic symbols, designations of, e.g. tolerances, hardness and case depth as well as general examples of drawing methods used on drawings produced within the Volvo Group or at the request of some individual company within the Volvo Group. The standard refers also to those Volvo Group common standards and ISO standards that give a complete definition of the representations shown. In certain cases, the specific drawing methods are established by this standard only. In section 2 with sub-sections, a number of basic and general rules concerning the interpretation of drawings are stated. In addition, general requirements for toleranced properties are specified. By referring to this standard on drawings: the requirements specified in the standards that are indicated under the heading "Established by standard" in the following sections apply it is possible to interpret the indications that the standard gives examples of.

Vidare specificeras allmnna krav fr toleranssatta egenskaper. In those cases the drawing method used is not exemplified in this standard, reference to the standard applied shall always be given on the relevant drawing. If a drawing refers to a standard that conflicts with a standard within the body of STD 101-0005, then the standard noted on the drawing shall have priority. With the exception of those cases when this standard establishes a specific drawing method, the standard gives only a simplified explanation of the respective drawing indication. For a complete interpretation, the standards referred to in connection with the respective example always apply. In case of any discrepancy between the indications given in this standard and the standards referred to for full interpretation, the latter always apply.

2 General rules on drawing dataUnless otherwise stated on the drawing or in the associated document, dimensions are given in millimetres. Unless otherwise indicated, generally or for a single piece of information, the technical documentation represents the object in its finished condition. The only exception from this rule is surface coated M-threads where the tolerance applies before any surface coating. Scale Unless otherwise indicated generally on the drawing, main scale 1:1 has been applied. A locally indicated scale applies only to the view or section concerned.
