    Guatemala City is the economic, governmental and cultural capital of the Republic,and it functions as the main port of entry into the country, with the country's largestinternational airport. Guatemala City became the capital after Antigua Guatemalahad been destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. With a population of around 3 millionpeople, Guatemala City is the largest and most modern city in Guatemala and thecountry's centre for finance and politics. It can be interesting to visit "Guate" - as itis also called by the locals. Guatemala City has attractions and restaurants, often

    with few tourists. Attending a Sunday evening gathering of hundreds of locals at the

    main plaza is certainly an unforgettable experience.

    The city is divided into 21 zones (zonas). Zona 1 is the old historic centre. Hereyou'll find the national palace, the presidential palace, the cathedral, the main plazaand the Central Market. South of Zona 1 is Zona 4 where many of the official

    buildings are situated, like the national bank, the national theatre, the tourist board(INGUAT). Further south is Zona 10 and Zona 9, divided by Avenida La Reforma.Zona 10 hosts most of the high class hotels, restaurants, bars,shopping facilities. A small part of Zona 10 is called Zona Viva(the lively zone) because of its nightlife.

    Info and tips:How to get in

    Guatemala City has one big airport, La Aurora. There are daily arrivals from the US,

    Mxico, El Salvador, Honduras (San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa), Costa Rica (SanJos), Nicaragua (Managua), Panama.

    MoneyThe Guatemalan currency is Quetzal (GTQ) named after the national bird.The rate of exchange is approximately 1 USD = 7.46 GTQUSD is commonly accepted in most of shops. On the contrary, Euro is notcommonly accepted, and its rate of exchange is very low.

    You don't really need to exchange Quetzales in advance outside the country andsuffer the low exchange rate; bring a few $1 bills to pay for taxis and change at theairport bank. Be careful to bring only neat US bills since old or broken ones are

    often not accepted.AMEX travellers checks are the only ones accepted in the country mostly at banksand at very few hotels. The best exchange rate is usually found in Guatemala City

    AMEX office.

    Electricity, water, telephone and postal serviceThe electricity, which you will usually find, is 110 volts AC and 60 Hz. The mostused power outlets are the two rectangular prong type. If your equipment has threeor round prongs, an adapter must be used; some of the hotels will let you borrowone but will be better to bring your own. The water you will find in hotels, in generalin the Capital and departmental capital, is safe to wash your tooth but not to drink;

    we strongly recommend you to drink bottled water only.Both telephone and postal services can be found in larger towns in the interior. Thepostal service requires postage stamps both for local and international mail. Localpre-paid international telephone cards are available in many stores and phonecompanies in Guatemala.Electrical plugs: 115V-125V 60Hz

    Weather and clothesThe Iberoamerican Leadership Conference will take place in March, during thesummer, the dry season, but it never gets too hot. It means comfortably warm daysin the highlands. While in Guatemala City and the highlands area wear spring

    clothing and a sweater or warm clothes for cold highland nights.
