Part I: Want to 'neutralise' our accent?

Man deserving candidates lose out on job opportunities because of their

vernacular accent.

Can I 'neutralise' m accent?

Yes, ou can. All ou need to do is train ourself to speak English as comfortabl

and perfectl as ou speak our mother tongue.

How do ou train ourself? B inculcating

certain practices in our dail lifestle.

These will get ou closer to sounding like a

native English speaker and equip ou with a

global accent -- and ou will speak not

American or British English, but correct

English.

This is the first step to learn an other accent,

be it American or British or Australian.

Lisa Mojsin, head trainer, director and founder of the Accurate English Training Compan in

Los Angeles, offers these tips to help 'neutralise' our accent or rather do awa with the local twang, as ou speak.

i. Observe the mouth movements of those who speak English well and tr to imitate them.

When ou are watching television, observe the mouth movements of the speakers. Repeat what the are saing,

while imitating the intonation and rhthm of their speech.

ii. Until ou learn the correct intonation and rhthm of English, slow our speech down.

If ou speak too quickl, and with the wrong intonation and rhthm, native speakers will have a hard time

understanding ou.

Don't worr about our listener getting impatient with our slow speech -- it is more important that everthing ou

sa be understood.

iii. Listen to the 'music' of English.

Do not use the 'music' of our native language when ou speak English. Each language has its own wa of

'singing'.

iv. Use the dictionar.

Tr and familiarise ourself with the phonetic smbols of our dictionar. Look up the correct pronunciation of words

that are hard for ou to sa.

. Make a list of frequentl used words that ou find difficult to pronounce and ask someone who speaks

he language we ll to pronounce them for ou.

Record these words, listen to them and practice saing them. Listen and read at the same time.

i. Bu books on tape.

Record ourself reading some sections of the book. Compare the sound of our English with that of the person
