Logos = Reason •Logos: Persuade by demonstrating logical proof•Two types: inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning• Inductive reasoning: takes a specific representative case or facts and then draws generalizations or conclusions from them. Deductive reasoning: Deductive reasoning begins with a generalization and then applies it to a specific case.

Ethos = Ethics•Ethos: Ethical argument based on the character of the speaker. •Make yourself believable!•Any elements of an essay that reveal the author as intelligent, caring, and knowledgeable about the topic will help persuade a reader that the argument is valid.•Example: You all make yourself believable by including evidence and supports in your essays.

Pathos = Emotion•Pathos: Emotional appeal. •Appeals to an audience's needs, values, and emotional sensibilities.•Use interviews or individual stories to paint a more legitimate and moving picture of reality or illuminate the truth. •Example: telling the story of a single child who has been abused may make for a more persuasive argument than simply the number of children abused each year because it would give a human face to the numbers.

Thursday: Peer RevisionsSwitch papers and peer revisers (at least 3):1. Put a smiley face next to a STRONG thesis and a good

transition and interesting hook, a frowny face next to a weak thesis or a boring/confusing hook, or a question mark in the intro paragraph if you can’t find them.

2. Underline each topic sentence and put a plus sign (+) if its a good one or a minus sign (-) if its weak.

3. Number each NEW supporting detail for each paragraph.4. Put brackets [ ] around sentences that are unclear or sound

“weird.”5. In the margins, make suggestions for additions using

Logos, Ethos or Pathos (at least one suggestion per paragraph)

6. Write two comments on the back: one comment about what you liked about the paper, and one thing they should work on.

7. Sign your name as 1st reviser, 2nd reviser, or 3rd reviser. I will be giving you a grade for revising! Don’t use the same color pen/pencil.
