are now accepting new patients at

(Just off Holland Sylvania Road Between Sylvania Avenue and Brint Road)

At Sylvania Family Physicians, Drs. Marilyngee and Bina Laungani strive to teach and

show their patients the bene ts of a healthylifestyle. They would like to see their patientsinvesting in healthy food and exercise insteadof prescription drugs to manage and preventdisease processes. They believe that the choicesone makes can provide for a healthy, longerlife.

Dr. Laungani has a strong interest in prepar-ing and eating healthy foods. She advises herpatients to choose whole foods including morefruits, vegetables and grains instead of high fat, processed foods. Although she chooses to bevegetarian herself, she respects her patientschoices and encourages low fat versions of meat such as sh, turkey and chicken. Otherprotein alternatives are beans, legumes, nutsand soy which are plant based instead of ani-mal products. Having grown up in India, shetakes advantage of her native countrys spicesto avor foods. Curry, pepper, tarragon andturmeric are some of her favorites which caneasily replace salt, sugar and fat to enhancenatural food avors. Research has shown timeand again that a diet such as Dr. Launganiadvocates can reduce blood pressure, bloodsugar, cholesterol and weight.

As for Dr. Marilyn (Lindy) Agee, she endors-es a lifestyle of a daily activity that includesrunning, swimming, biking and weight train-ing. She started running by signing up for Racefor the Cure. This is a great way to get and stay

motivated by having a goal and bene ting a

charity. Belonging to a group that has the samegoals, such as Team Toledo Triathlon Club, inspires her to stay active. She loves seeinglots of other women and many of her patientsinvolved in these sports. She has heard everyexcuse there is from patients not to exerciseand she promises she can counter each one witha reason to exercise and a way to overcomeobstacles. As a role model, she can point outthat she works full-time and has a family butstill manages to make time to exercise. Evenin northwest Ohio, one can get outside all yearround. The Metro Parks are a wonderful placeto walk or run, even in February.

Both of them agree that they would loveto see their patients taking fewer medica-tions and managing chronic diseases such ashypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, obesity and chronic pain bymaking healthy lifestyle changes. It is possibleto prevent and treat many conditions with diet, exercise, stress reduction and good sleep.

When they see a patient over 90 years oldthey always ask about their lifestyle over theyears. They have let them in on the secret of longevity. The answer, according to their poll,is: daily activity, healthy diet, no smoking andlots of friends.

They hope you can accomplish these goalstoo. As they like to point out, they only get onechance at this life. Why not live a healthier andlonger one?

Heres hoping to see you in the produce

    aisle and at the park!

When I meet with a business owner, whether they are new to processing or haveyears of experience, I make sure I learnall the facets of their business. By askingthe right questions I can provide themwith appropriate solutions. Drs. Simon, Haerian and Ludwig specializein creating beautiful, healthy smiles for chil-dren, teens, and adults. Providing high tech,state-of-the art care in a low stress, friendlyatmosphere sets this orthodontic practice apartfrom the rest. Separated treatment areas fea-turing a television for the patient and a seatfor mom or dad REALLY set it apart. Many orthodontic of ces utilize an open baywith dental chairs lined up in a row becauseits more ef cient for the doctor. Some evenspecify that only the patient be allowed in theclinic area.

Dr. Simon, however, has always felt strong-ly that patients deserve some privacy and par-ents should always be welcome. He designedthe Sylvania of ce at 6711 Monroe St. withthat in mind.

In 2003, Drs. Simon and Haerian incor-porated the same treatment area concept inthe Lambertville of ce at 7928 Secor Rd.Comfortable waiting rooms, great magazines, and a video game area are also provided tomake appointment times enjoyable for allmembers of the family. The same pleasantenvironment will be available at MaumeeOrthodontics, 4359 Keystone Dr., in the fallof 2010.

Innovative orthodontic techniques andof ce design arent the only things setting thispractice apart from the rest. For the past fewyears, Drs. Simon, Haerian and Ludwig have

held a Perfect Smile Contest to nd winningsmiles to be featured in print ads and on theirwebsite at www.perfectbraces.com www.perfectbraces.com. The contests are fun andpatients love to have their pictures on bro-chures and displayed in newspaper and maga-zine ads. The latest winners will be appearingsoon on the updated website. The winningsmile of former patient, Becky Minger, willalso be showcased. Becky recently won theMiss Ohio pageant and in January will com-pete for the title of Miss USA.

    By Tyler HowardHerald Publisher

Every time somebody asks me how my job is going, they do it a certain way. Theylook at me with paternal understanding andsympathy, usually tilt their head to oneside, and reduce their voice to a low, gentletone.

Hows the job going, theyll say. Whatwith the state of newspapers and all

They then trail off and wait patently forme to burst into tears and lament the destruc-tion of American journalism and my chosencareer-path. Thats when I disappoint them.

My answer is not what they expect. The job is going great, I tell them.Yes, big papers are having their problems. But community papers are thriving. AndThe Sylvania Herald is one of them.

The truth about the fall of newspapers isthat not all newspapers are falling. Whilethe big metro dailies struggle, hometownnewspapers continue to thrive. Becausenewspapers arent dying, theyre localiz-ing.

The Sylvania Herald provides our read-ers with weekly community news, coveringthe latest local events, sports, school hap-penings and more. We could not do thiswithout you -- the community. To thosewho send in story ideas and photos, wethank you and ask you to continue to do so.A community newspaper works best whenit is written largely by the community andwe would not be able to put out great localcontent without our reader submissions.

Going forward, The Sylvania Heraldplans to continue to provide Sylvania and thesurrounding communities with quality localnews, unmatched local sports reporting,consumer-friendly advertising, and insight-ful, thoughtful and entertaining features onthe people and business that make Sylvaniaone of Ohios Best Hometowns.

If George J. (Joe) Gross had simplydone his job, there would be no GrossElectric today. Gross was sent toToledo in 1910 to close a store for thePeerless Light Company, a Chicago-based manufacturer of gas mantles. But instead of closing the downtownToledo store, he ran it for six monthsin exchange for a percentage of thepro ts. He later bought the store andestablished the Gross Electric FixtureCompany. In doing so, he began GrossElectrics long-standing history in theToledo business community.

This vision of a bright future in

Toledo has been passed down fromone generation to the next. RichardGross took over the business fromhis father in the 1960s. Under hisleadership, Gross Electric expandedits showroom lighting business, anddiversi ed its product mix from pri -marily residential to include prod-ucts for the commercial and industrialmarkets.

    The company is currently operated

by Richards daughter, Laurie, andson, Joe. Laurie became presidentof Gross Electric in 1992, and Joeassumed the position of vice presidentin 1997. While continuing to offerquality lighting and electrical sup-plies, Gross Electric has expandedits services to include lighting energyaudits, lighting design services, bulbrecycling, and lighting xture repairand restoration.

Customer service has always beenat the forefront of our business, saidLaurie Gross. Thats as true todayas it was when my grandfather startedthe company 100 years ago.

As the oldest independent, locallyowned electrical distributor in thearea, Gross Electric provides lightingand electrical products to the com-mercial, institutional, and residentialmarkets. Gross Electric has the larg-est and most complete lighting show-rooms in northwest Ohio and south-east Michigan.

her back as she enters the pool. Itsobvious by the look on her face andthe way that she is clenching the railsthat she is in extreme pain. As shelowers herself into the water, her facebegins to relax, her arms are at hersides and she begins to smile. Thewarmth of the water and encourage-ment of the physical therapist assis-tant at her side helps to ease her painand frustration from low back pain.

Aquatic therapy saw a big boostabout ten years ago for many diagno-ses to include low back pain, arthritis, and balance problems. The differenceaquatic therapy can make in the dailylives of those suffering from low backpain is remarkable. Many people are

unable to walk or perform exerciseon land because they are afraid tomove. When theyre in the warmthand support of the water, they are muchmore relaxed and their movements arenot as guarded. Once they improve,

they can start a gentle exercise pro-gram on land and make a successfulreturn to more normal daily activities.

CPW Rehab was founded in 1987and was one of only two facilitiesoffering on-site aquatic therapy inconjunction with traditional physicaltherapy. Today, the model is common, but CPW Rehab retains its initial suc-cess. The rehabilitative pool is heatedto 94 degrees and is equipped withboth a ramp and hydraulic chair lift.We are handicapped accessible, withconvenient well lit parking. "Fast delivery of cabinets! Great team work approach. Felt very comfortable not being forced beyond ourbudget. We were given various options to meet our family and financial needs."-Bob and Cindy, Waterville"Matt Orns was wonderful! We kept him busy figuring, re-figuring and figuring again! He always said 'That's my job,' or'That's what we do.' He was very patient with me as I wavered, questioned my choices, and changed my mind. He was un-

believably prompt getting prices, re-ordering things, etc. I can't say enough about Matt. He made the experience fun and morepersonal, rather than cold and business-like. My kitchen is beautiful and I am very happy!" - Kermit and Maggie, Lambertville

It should be. Just ask your neighbors..."When we started getting quotes for our kitchen, we found the process to be very frustrating. We went tosome of the "bigger" stores, and found it hard to find a worker to help us or listen to what we wanted. Wehad driven by KSI several times, but assumed the "bigger stores" would be cheaper. We were wrong!! We went

to KSI and we were sold on KSI the minute we walked out the door. Chris was so easy to work with. Hissuggestions on the design of the kitchen were great! I also liked when we called or stopped into the store thathe remembered us and everything we had talked about. The service was awesome!" - Bob and Lauren, Toledo
