Gas Analysis
Why Monitor Gases?
• Standards• Equipment status monitor• Patient status monitor
What gases are monitored?
• Oxygen• Carbon dioxide• Nitrous oxide• Nitrogen• Anesthetic agent• Inspired Concentration• Expired Concentration
Oxygen Analyzer
What other O2 monitors are used?
Agent Analyzers
End-tidal CO2
•Production•Mobilization•Elimination
Capnometer
• ventilation must be sufficient to carry oxygen into the lungs • oxygen is being transported to the mitochondria (CV function) • aerobic metabolism is consuming this oxygen and producing CO2 • CO2 is being transported to the lungs (CV function) • CO2 in the expired air gives an indication of adequate ventilation
What it tells you
What it doesn’t tell you
Does not tell about regional blood flow, cerebral or cardiac ischemia can occur with normal ET CO2.
