They would have nine children, only five daughters surviving past childhood, and all became nuns. Their marriage would end when Zélie died of breast cancer on 28 August 1877 leaving Louis with his five daughters aged 17 to 4. He moved his family to Lisieux to be closer to Zélie’s brother Isidore to provide a better future for his daughters. Louis was very content and happy with his life, and desiring to suffer somewhat for the Lord, he offered himself. The next year, Louis would suffer two strokes and cerebral arteriosclerosis. He would be cared for by his daughters Céline and Léonie until his death in 29 July 1894. Both Zélie and Louis were renowned among their family for their holiness. The publications of Saint Thérèse’s writings would make this reputation known through the world. Their willingness to examine and carry out the will of God in their lives and the love they gave to their children are examples of married life for peoples of all ages. While they had their struggles, Zélie and Louis never let them overcome their confidence in God’s goodness and His plan. And the dedication to their vocation to the married life was instrumental in fostering the wellbeing and religious vocations of their children. Christus vincit, Fr. Thomas

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 25, 2015 7:30 am – Pro-Populo, 9:00 am, 11:00 am

Scripture Readings for the Week: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

So the time is finally coming next Saturday morning, the transitional diaconate ordination of two seminarians who were formerly assigned to our parish: James Kulway, John Mulhollan (as well as Andrew Hoover, Kevin Klonowsky, and Patrick Schultz). Please keep them in prayer as they offer their lives for the sake of the Church. They will make their vows/promises to remain celibate, unceasingly pray the breviary, and (in the name of Jesus Christ) remain obedient to Bishop Lennon and his successors.

The parents of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Blessed Azélie-Marie “Zélie” (née Guérin) and Blessed Louis Joseph Aloys Stanislaus Martin are to be canonized this weekend during the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of the Bishops on the Family. They are the first married couple to be canonized, and I do not think it is an accident that they are to be declared saints as a couple as the bishops are wrestling with the pastoral application of the Church’s teaching on the family. Zélie and Louis are being held up as role models for all married couples and families.

Both of them wished to enter into the religious life, but both were turned away for various reasons. Both were very skilled in their respective trades (lacemaking for Zélie and watchmaking for Louis). They met by chance as they crossed a bridge and a voice told Zélie that this was “he whom I have prepared for you.” Their marriage (13 July 1858) was a total opening to God’s will, and it would be He whom they would always seek to serve first.

SOLEMN EXPOSITION OF

THE BLESSED EUCHARIST Friday, November 6th through

Sunday, November 8th It is time once again to join together as a parish family to devote ourselves to the adoration of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament – commonly known in our parish as Forty Hours. This year our Solemn Exposition will take place from Friday, November 6th with the opening Mass at 10:00 a.m., through closing Vespers with Benediction on Sunday, November 8th at 6:30 p.m. This devotion, dating back as early as the eleventh century, is to draw us into a closer relationship with Christ and increase our desire to participate in the Mass, the Eucharistic Liturgy. During Eucharistic Devotions, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar in the monstrance, a sacred vessel for showing (monstare) the consecrated host. “Could you not keep watch [with me] for one

hour?” –Mark 14:37

VOCATION CRUCIFIX

Have you ever taken the Vocation Crucifix into your home? Please prayerfully consider it. If you or your family would like to pray with the Crucifix for vocations to the priesthood, religious life, married or single life, please call the rectory. We will place your name on the list so the Crucifix can be presented to you during Mass on a given weekend or picked up at another convenient time in the sacristy or parish office. Helen and Gene DeShon received the Vocation Crucifix this weekend.

After being the third highest Acme Cash Back earner in the area last year, St. Francis de Sales Parish School is hoping to be first this year! Please help us achieve this goal by saving and sending in your receipts every time you shop at Acme. Ask your relatives, friends, and neighbors to do the same. Please put receipts in an envelope marked Acme Cash Back Program and send into the school or parish office. You may also place your envelope in the collection basket at Mass on the weekends. The receipts can be turned in now through January 6, 2016. We are also collecting Campbell’s Soup Labels and Box Tops for Education. They may be handled the same as the Acme register receipts. Thank you in advance for your support!

Each month the St. Francis de Sales Bereavement Ministry will gather for a Holy Hour of prayer to remember the deceased members of our families and of our parish. The upcoming Holy Hour is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th from 7-8:00 pm. Please join us!

AVILA HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS

God has blessed our Diocese with 80 young men in our seminary, the largest number we’ve seen in several years. They, along with all of our Priests, Deacons and Sisters, really appreciate your prayers. We invite all of you to join us in prayer on the second Monday of every month after the 8:15 morning Mass.

Great news from Christ the Bridegroom Monastery! Sr. Cecilia and Sr. Gabriella (of St. Francis de Sales Parish) will make their life profession on Sunday, November 8, at 2:00 p.m., at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Parma. All are invited to the profession service and the Divine Liturgy that will follow. Here is some information about this step in the monastic life and what you will experience at the profession: After several years of discernment and experience in living the monastic life as a dokimos (postulant) and then as a rasophore (“robe-bearer”) nun after her tonsure, a nun may request to make her life profession and commit her whole life to Christ as His bride. If she is determined to be ready to make this commitment, she is received as a stavrophore (“cross-bearer”) nun during the monastic profession service. At the beginning of the service, she is led up through the center of the church in a white robe (symbolic of her baptismal garment), barefoot, with her head uncovered and long hair flowing. She makes three prostrations as she walks up through the church, symbolizing the three immersions in the baptismal font. As she walks and approaches the bishop standing before the Royal Doors, the people sing a troparion (hymn) about the return of the prodigal son to his father. After the final prostration, the bishop helps her up. He then asks a series of questions to determine her free will, her intentions, her willingness to renounce the things of the world, and her willingness to embrace poverty, chastity, obedience and all the “sorrows and restraints of the monastic life for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven.” She answers, “Yes, Master, with God’s help.” The bishop then recites a powerful catechesis (instruction) about the monastic life and beautiful words of encouragement, such as, “May He be with you when you fall and when you rise up again, consoling and cheering your heart with the comfort of His Holy Spirit.” The bishop then prays to God that He may accept her and help her. The bishop then asks her to give him the scissors that he will use to cut her hair. She must hand them to him three times to demonstrate her free will. Then he tonsures her (cuts her hair) “as a sign that she has renounced the world, and everything that is in the world, and for the restraining of her will and of all fleshly desires.” The bishop then blesses each piece of the habit one by one with prayers that explain the significance of that piece of clothing, and she is clothed in each piece. In addition to the habit she has been wearing since her tonsure as a rasophore nun, she also receives the klobuk (hat with veil), the paramandyas (a square of black wool embroidered with a red cross and the instruments of the Passion), the mandyas (cape), a hand cross, a 300-knot chotki (prayer rope), and a lighted candle. In Christ the Bridegroom Monastery the nuns also receive a wedding ring to symbolize their union with Christ as their Spouse. The nun is now led in front of the icon of Christ where she will stand holding her hand cross and lighted candle for the duration of the Divine Liturgy that follows, just as the newly baptized would do. A stavrophore nun experiences the fullness of monastic life, sharing in the passion, death and resurrection of her Bridegroom. She is given the title of “Mother” to express the fruitfulness of her union with Christ. Before the nun is tonsured as a stavrophore she relinquishes all monies, possessions and property. At this point, the nun is committed to remain for her lifetime in Christ the Bridegroom Monastery. Many people ask, “Is the life profession the same thing is ‘final vows?’” Yes, but Eastern monastics do not make “temporary vows” as other types of religious communities do, so there is no need to specify that these are the “final” vows. To read more about the stages of monastic life, visit the “Discerning?” tab at www.christthebridegroom.org. Please pray for Sr. Cecilia and Sr. Gabriella, especially during our upcoming Eucharistic Devotions weekend, as they prepare for this exciting and joyful day, as well as entering into this new life of deeper union and consecration to Jesus! Also, everyone is welcome to come pray and give thanks to God with Sr. Gabriella, her community and her family for her vocation by celebrating a Mass of Thanksgiving at the parish, one week later, on Sunday, November 15 at the 11 o’clock Mass.

Autumn Prayer

O God of Creation, You have blessed us with the changing of the seasons.

As we embrace these autumn months,

May the earlier setting of the sun remind us to take time to rest.

May the crunch of the leaves beneath our feet remind us of the brevity of

this earthly life. May the steam of our breath in the

cool air remind us that it is You who give us Your breath of life.

May the scurrying of the squirrels and the migration of the birds remind us that You call us to follow Your will.

We praise You for Your goodness

forever and ever.

Amen.
