SETTING: The musical setting for today is William Mathias. Copies of the setting are available at the entrance to the Church. PRELUDE: Nun bitten wir den heiligen Geist, BuxWV 209, Diderik Buxtehude (1637-1707) INTROIT HYMN: TiS 387 ʻChrist is alive!ʼ

SENTENCE: ʻThere is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for Jesusʼ sake, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal lifeʼ. Mark 10.29-30 The service continues on Page 119 & 120 with the Greeting, Prayer of Preparation, Confession, Absolution & Gloria. COLLECT: Merciful God, in your Son you call not the righteous but sinners to repentance: draw us away from the easy road that leads to destruction, and guide us into paths that lead to life abundant, that in seeking your truth, and obeying your will, we may know the joy of being a disciple of Jesus our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen FIRST READING: Job 23.1-9, 16-17 Then Job answered: ʻToday also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning. O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling! I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. I would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would give heed to me. There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted for ever by my judge. ʻIf I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him; on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him. God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me; If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my face!

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM: 22 (1-15) (APBA pp.241,242) SECOND READING: Hebrews 4.12-16 Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high

priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN: TiS 590 ʻWhat a friend we have in Jesusʼ GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Cantor/All: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Cantor: Happy the poor in spirit; The kingdom of heaven is theirs! Cantor/All: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Minister: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark 10.17-31 All: Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, ʻGood Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?ʼ Jesus said to him, ʻWhy do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.” ʼ He said to him, ʻTeacher, I have kept all these since my youth.ʼ Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ʻYou lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.ʼ When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ʻHow hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!ʼ And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, ʻChildren, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.ʼ They were greatly astounded and said to one another, ʻThen who can be saved?ʼ Jesus looked at them and said, ʻFor mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.ʼ Peter began to say to him, ʻLook, we have left everything and followed you.ʼ Jesus said, ʻTruly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.ʼ

~~ RAFFLE TICKETS IN THE STORY BRIDGE PHOTO: These are selling for $5 a ticket. Are you able to take a book of 5 tickets and seel them? Please return butts and money as soon as possible.

~~ NAME BADGES: One way that this parish can be more welcoming is to wear a name badge. You might know someone else’s name, but do they know yours and can they remember it next week? St Mary’s is going to put an order in for name badges. Depending on how many the parish orders, the cost will be between $10 and $12 dollars. The name badge will be 76mm x 25 mm (3” x 1”) with either a pin or magnet attachment. The design will be the cross shaped Anglican Church logo and space for your Christian name and surname. PLEASE PRINT THE NAME YOU WANT ON THE ORDER FORM AND MARK WHETHER YOU WANT A PIN OR A MAGNET. The bulk order will go in shortly.

~~ National Trust Contributions: If you would like to make a regular contribution to the St Maryʼs National Trust appeal, giving envelopes are now available. Please see Fr. Gary if you would like a set of envelopes.

~~ SIDEPERSONS' ROSTER: Our next sidepersons' roster is out - many thanks to our wonderful team for helping out again. However, we would love to welcome some more volunteers - the more people available, the less everyone has to do! The duties for either welcoming worshippers, and giving out, and putting away books, or for the morning tea roster are quite straightforward, and for anyone new to our church, is a great way to meet other church members. Anyone who might be interested please contact Alex Daunt on 0416152313, [email protected], or see me in church.

~~ CARE FOR OUR GROUNDS: Our grounds are looking good and to keep them that way some extra help is needed. Please let one of the wardens know:

1. Is anyone able to help paint the benches in the morning tea area? 2. Is anyone able to assist with watering for approx an hour a week? Thanks to those who came on Friday to help clear some of the vegetation around the grounds.

~~ LA TRAINING UPDATE DAY A training update for all LAʼs will be held on Saturday, 24 October commencing at 10am. Please note this date in your diaries.

Page 7: 10 11 - 20th after Pentecost - Saint Mary's Church 11 - 20th after pentecost.pdf · followed you.ʼ Jesus said, ʻTruly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers

~~ PEOPLE UPDATE: Kay Brock-Ridgway is continuing to improve and is walking around the ward. You can send cards to room 10-34 Mater Private. Angela Zivkovich is also recovering well from her most recent surgery. Frank Risch is in Hospital.

ORDERS FOR 2016 ANGLICAN CHURCH CALENDARS Itʼs that time of the year again. It is the 24th year of Anglican Churches. Cost per calendar is $12.00. Print your name, phone number and quantity on the sheet provided. You can pay when they arrive. The more we sell, the more profit for Anglican Overseas Aid. CHRISTMAS CARDS will also be available, but Fr. Colin Cussen will need some help. Please see him if you are able to assist.

The Jacarandas have started to bloom in our grounds. I think they provide a lovely carpet to the grounds; (and sometimes add to the carpet inside!)

Judy Noble is organising a proposal for new plantings in the grounds around the memorial gardens. We should be able to provide a sketch next week for your comment.

Marie-Claire and I appreciate the connections that we make in many parts of church life. In Roma last week we were reminded that Archdeacon Arthur Richard Rivers dedicated the new church in Roma on the 14th November 1915. At that time Archdeacon Rivers was the Archdeacon of Toowoomba acting as the Locum Tenens while Alfred Davies, (Rector of St Jamesʼ Toowoomba), was absent serving as Chaplain to the A.I.F. Archdeacon Arthur Rivers was the brother of Godfrey Rivers who painted the sanctuary ceiling here at St Maryʼs. So we were re-tracing the very journey taken 100 years ago, with connections at St Maryʼs, Toowoomba and Roma. The celebrations last weekend at Roma included: the official launch of the book on the windows, “Building with Light”, a concert, historical displays, a banquet in the church on the Saturday night and a wonderful service on Sunday morning. We also met grandchildren of a previous rector whom we had heard about and never met and they will visit St Maryʼs sometime in the future.

St Paulʼs also has a very similar window to the Dorcas window, crafted by Martin Moroney, here in the western wall at St Maryʼs. The explanation of history is often helped by people going to different places and noting the similarities and differences in the various churches.
