Introduction
If you frequently find words like "awkward," "vague,“or "wordy" in between the lines and on the marginsof your graded papers, this is the handout for you.
Keep in mind that this handout is intended for use during therevision process. Finding the right words is fundamentally anissue of choice, which means first locating what’s not quiteright with original choices.
Revising for word choice is not about prettifying your writingor sounding sophisticated; it is about expressing your ideasclearly and effectively.

Clichés: Why to avoid them and how
Clichés are catchy little phrases so frequently used
that they’ve become trite, corny, or annoying. They
are problematic in our writing because theiroveruse has diminished their impact and becausethey require several words where just one woulddo. Example:Agree to disagree = DisagreeLast but not least = LastUp in the air = Unknown/undecided
