ICT WP 2011- 2012The context: trends influencing the WP

• ICT, the engine for growth in a low carbon economy– smarter energy grids, energy efficient buildings, greener cars &

transport systems, lighting & manufacturing

• Changing value chains & new market opportunities– Web and Internet-based services, open platforms for resource

sharing, Cloud computing

• Technology developments at a cross-roads– Future Internet: Medium and longer term developments – Components: nanoelectronics, photonics, new materials– Multi-core architectures, new programming paradigms– Smart environments: embedded, networked, learning capabilities– Digital media and new forms of content

Page 15: 1 VII Programma Quadro Tema ICT obiettivi e risultati Aldo Mascioli Delegazione italiana al Comitato di Programma ICT Pescara 26. 03.2010

ICT WP 2011- 2012

Proposed strategy: commitment to reinforce Europe's presence in basic ICTtechnologies

• Challenge 1: Pervasive and Trusted Network and Service Infrastructures (PPP on Future Internet included)

– Maintain and strengthen Europe’s leadership in networking and services

• Challenge 2: Cognitive Systems and Robotics– Seize opportunities arising in cognitive systems and robotics

• Challenge 3: Alternative Paths to Components and Systems – Master ICT components and systems for all the economy and capture new market developments

• Challenge 4: Technologies for Digital Content and Languages – Nurture the development of an EU content industry and make more sense out of content and information

Page 16: 1 VII Programma Quadro Tema ICT obiettivi e risultati Aldo Mascioli Delegazione italiana al Comitato di Programma ICT Pescara 26. 03.2010

ICT WP 2011- 2012

• Challenge 5: ICT for Health, Ageing Well, Inclusion and Governance– More efficient and effective health and inclusion systems in an ageing

society

• Challenge 6: ICT for a low carbon economy– Maximise ICT contribution to a lower carbon economy

• Challenge 7: ICT for the Enterprise and Manufacturing – Reinforce Europe’s manufacturing capacity and business developments

Main new features in WP 2011-12

• Future Internet PPP– a) strengthen and expand the competitive position of the European ICT

industry (telecommunication operators, mobile devices manufacturers, software and service industries, content providers and media;

– b) contribute to policy trend towards a more sustainable society

• SME initiative on Digital Content and Languages– Make it easier for SMEs and innovative players to exploit and contribute to

large digital resource pools

• New FET Features– At least one research intensive high-tech SME with established in-house

research capacity.– Projects led by young researchers

• Pre-commercial Public Procurement – Support national administrations to invest more in purchasing innovative

products and services that still require further research in the underlying ICT
